I got a gift card from restaurant.com to try American Steamed Cheeseburger. It's located on a side street in Wallingford with a public parking lot across the street. There is no AC that I could tell, and had a TV playing baseball. The waitress cooked my food to order, which was the most epic cheese I have ever had! There was more cheese then meat, and it was so good! They also sold brownies, crochet, coke beverages, and chips. The ketchup was at both of the two tables. The bathroom looked a little added on, but did work. Definitely recommend though for the cheese awesomeness. read more

I was exploring town and had this place on my list to try since reading good reviews. I've never heard of steamed burgers so I was excited. Apparently, steamed burgers were invented in Connecticut! The place was a little hole in the wall with a couple of tables. It reminded me of someone's living room and the person who helped us was friendly; it felt like a friend cooking us lunch in his kitchen. I got almost like a dive bar vibe even though it's not a bar. The service was great, quick and cordial. I had a coupon on Yelp for 10% off for checking in; he said he didn't know about it but honored it. I had the single steamed cheeseburger on a poppy seed roll; with lettuce, tomato, cheese, ketchup, mustard, and pickles. The burger was actually really good and moist. I think the cheese made it a little bit too salty but all in all, it's not bad. I housed the whole burger and was super full. I also had the tuna macaroni salad as a side which was delicious also. They had Foxon Park soda; I had the root beer. My son had chips and a hot dog and my husband had the double burger; they seemed to enjoy their meals. Wow, what a great little hole in the wall. Did a show at the nearby concert hall and my tourmate and I were hungry but it was after midnight and options were pretty slim. But we found this place and wow... The ambience is great. It has the feel of a place that's been there forever but has only been there 11 years or so. The decor was very retro and homey. The woman (the owner's mother) working was quite friendly. Now the food. The sides are all homemade and the potato salad and brownie were tasty. Bonus points for having Vernor's ginger ale, hard to find outside of the Detroit area. And the burgers--- wow. DO NOT-- I repeat-- DO NOT order the double unless you haven't eaten in a week. I got the double cheeseburger loaded and OMG... I finished maybe 3/4 of it and hadn't eaten since breakfast and had been working hard all day. But it was delicious. Steamed hamburgers? How could that possibly be good? And yet! I was in Wallingford after a Jethro Tull concert and my wife and I were a bit hungry. We found this place on Yelp! and thought "Well, that's a thing we've never heard of, let's give it a shot!" We both ordered a double cheeseburger. You can choose from a handful of standard free toppings, and there's a list of specialty burgers as well, but we figured start with the basic. And boy were they good. Just the right amount of saltiness, and dripping in melty sharp white cheddar. What the burger might lack in juiciness, and it really doesn't lack much, is more than made up for by all that delicious melty cheese. I didn't know before I went if it was an eat-in place or just take-out and delivery. Turns out there are three tables inside so you can plop yourself down and munch. I didn't notice any side dishes. I wasn't looking, either. The burger is all you need. My wife couldn't finish hers, says she won't get the double next time. I couldn't NOT finish mine. And part of hers. Visiting the area from New York and decided that I had to have a famous steamed CT cheeseburger. Came here based on the yelp reviews and wasn't disappointed. It's a tiny shop with one table and two chairs and one high chair...also 2 or 3 barstools at the counter. Burger was juicy and flavorful but the cheese really makes the burger...gooey and salty. A great topping to the burger. You get a choice of a plain or poppy seed bun (more like a roll that you get with an egg breakfast sandwich at the deli here). My only complaint is that the bun to burger ratio is off...the bun is too big for the size of the burger. Either more meat is needed or a smaller bun. Definitely get the onion rings. So good.....fries were good but pretty run of the mill. But they were fried nicely and crispy. read more

We finally used our Groupon for here today and were pleasantly surprised! It's a little hole in the wall kind of place that we drove by the first time. Not a ton of seating, but we didn't mind at all as a lot of steamed burger places are grab and go. The guy working there was super nice, we noted him washing his hands and wiping down counters between orders (EXTREMELY appreciated). The fries were okay but I'm more of a rings girl and they were seriously some of the best I've had. The burger was great. Onions, tomato, lettuce and extra cheese is the way to go. An old-timey looking, family owned burger spot. Very casual (food comes on paper plates). The owner is friendly and will greet you on your way in and out. The cheeseburgers here are great, and for a very reasonable price ($6.25)! I especially love that they don't skimp on any of the cheese; the sharp cheddar taste goes especially well with the burger. The hot dog, however, was overpriced ($4.25) for a pretty standard hot dog. I regretted not paying an extra $2 for another cheeseburger instead. read more

I like new places and would rather support these types of places over chain restaurants. The services was great and the place ,although small, was very clean. The staff behind the counter were pleasant and service was quick. I just ordered a cheese burger with lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup and mayo. I ordered it to go. The burger itself.... the meat....was very good. No weird aftertaste. I felt I was eating quality meat. The bread was fresh... a choice between a regular or poppy seed roll. The veggies were fresh. The cheese was not what I was expecting. It was good....different...but didn't satisfy my desire for a big juicy cheeseburger. When the order is placed to go, the burger is wrapped in foil. Unfortunately, the bottom bread was soggy from all the steam building up inside. It had only been wrapped for no more than 10 minutes. Given that this place is small and most orders will be to go, if the owner is reading this... consider a container/ packaging that can let out some steam and reconsider adding a selection of cheese. I ordered the steamed cheeseburger with onions and mayor and my husband insisted he ordered extra cheese because a lot of places are skimpy on the cheese, however Burg'r Tend'r is not skimpy! My burger had just enough cheese and he was shocked that he didn't need to order extra, although who would complain with too much cheese? Burg'r Tend'r makes a great steamed cheeseburger. When it comes to a steamed cheeseburger (one of my favorite foods in the world), I want quality ground beef steamed to juicy perfection, topped with melty, gooey steamed cheese, on a nice soft bun with fresh, quality toppings - and that's what I got here. On top of that, I had the most pleasant experience ordering from and chatting with the friendly and helpful staff in this cute little one-counter, one-table place. I stopped in today with a Groupon that got me two steamed cheeseburgers, two orders of fries (I was able to substitute one order for onion rings), and two cans of soda. Everything was delicious. My burger was satisfying and put together very well (not too messy), and the fries and onion rings were both nice and crispy, even when I took the orders to go. Prices were reasonable all around, and the Groupon deals and coupons they have on their website and in various mailers are great deals. This place has it all, the atmosphere, the staff, and the food. The cheeseburger was really good, it was big and juicy, with great cheese. There were hundreds of sodas to choose from, with interesting and new flavors, brands I'd never heard of. The place was covered in old pictures and newspaper articles, and those along with a friendly and talkative cook showed me some cool CT history. There were lots of interesting sports memorabilia, and plenty other pictures to look at. The cook himself was a very nice guy, showing us a lot of the stuff he had, and overall having quality conversation with us. Wasn't sure what is was walking into when I entered the restaurant.It was more of a store about to close. There was no real kitchen to speak of just a counter with a steamer on it. The owner was very nice and chatty. I have a steamed burger before at Teds and by comparison Teds is much better. I would have preferred a better quality meat mix. I felt sick for the rest of the day after eating half of the burger. No prices posted except for the burger prices. We were charged $5 for a bag of chips that the owner said he imports from Canada. A quaint little hole in the wall burger joint with excellent, friendly service and a unique product that sets it apart from the competition. My mom decided to give me and my gf a groupon for two free steamed cheeseburgers and we were both blown away. The burgers were to die for and the service was fast and very friendly. The prices are dirt cheap, like 5 bucks for a burger and they also had Foxon Park sodas, which is a nice touch. We also tried their onion rings and French fries--both fire. I seriously recommend this place to anyone looking to get a reasonably priced, good quality burger with a slightly different taste than the standard 5 Guys, Shake Shack, Wayback etc. This was my first time trying a steamed cheeseburger and I'm certainly hooked. Not a knock, just nothing that really stands out from fries elsewhere. For drinks they have Avery's soda and Foxon Park both with a decent assortment of flavors. As well as regular soda and water. The owner was very friendly and eager to hear feedback, including a survey form with our food. I thought that was a good sign. Most people are more content with getting your money rather than how they can make sure it's better spent on their product. I went to this place when it first opened and wanted to try there steamed cheeseburgers. The burger was good but i did not like only have one kind of cheese to put on my burger. The cheddar was bitter and took away from my enjoyment of the burger. I came away feeling they need to expand the cheese choices for the burger. I would like to see American,Mozzarella,Munster,Provolone and Swiss as cheese options when ordering a cheeseburger from this place.
