Our favorite doughnut spot! We get our favorite bars every Saturday like clock work! The staff is so friendly and helpful! The bread is the softest and fluffiest, exactly how a doughnut should be! There's not a doughnut here I've tried that I didn't like. Everything has great flavor and not overwhelming with sugar. It's a cute little spot and well taken care of. As someone with severe food allergies, I asked the employee about what the ingredients in their donuts were and if I could read them, but they proceeded to tell me that they didn't know and wouldn't check to see if it had anything that I couldn't have. If you are going to be doing food like that, I'd imagine they would be prepared to answer and help someone out when it comes to something so deadly like a food allergy. read more

I was hesitant to come here based off the negative reviews on customer service - but it's the closest donut spot to me and I decided to give it a go. We went around 10 am, they had a good variety still left. Their pricing was clear and fair. We ended up going with a variety of priced 1/2 dozen (different colored tags) and it came out to $9. The donut flavors were really good and they had a lot of options. We were served super fast and contrary to the other reviews, both ladies serving were friendly and kind - which was great to see. read more

Drove by and on a whim, I went in. I ordered 3 dozen donuts. I believe I ordered the "red label." I work in healthcare, and this was a treat for an assisted living for their staff. The gal asked me if I wanted to pick the donuts, and I told her she could choose. She was very pleasant. I was in and out, and yes the staff were very thankful and happy for a delicious treat! A friend sent these to my doorsteps as a granted wish. Lol!! And I absolutely was in awe. The Maple was so fresh and soft!! Although my husband did not enjoy the filled jelly donut because he said it taste like they had just used ones from the jar and stuffed it in there. Only place open Sunday morning, so that's a plus. I'm not sure if they reuse the previous days' doughnuts,but the ones I've bought early in the morning can be dry. The store is clean and overall, they get the job done. I do recommend them for feeding hungry humans. read more

You know this place would be okay if it wasn't for the girls poor attitude behind the counter and her not ever being able to get our order right, on not one, but two separate occasions. First time we went in there she was rude and short, and got our daughters order wrong and I had to drive back to get the donut she missed, when I let her know it looked like a donut we ordered was missing there was no apology or anything, just sold us the donut and walked away. Just like other reviewers who talk about her poor attitude, I thought maybe it was just an off day for her, we all have them, right? Nope not the case for her...went back in a second time and she missed a donut AGAIN...but learning from my mistake I checked the bag before we left and nicely mentioned that a donut was forgotten...again no apology, sold us the missing donut and walked away. I have had a good experience with the other employees...but she's usually the front girl and she's just rude and unpleasant. Were you to read Goatstar Donuts reviews for this Caldwell location on Google you'd find a 4.9 of 5.0 summary with positive comments for the eats and shop. Much like those of my Yelp friend Joseph N, who I thank at the start of my tome for writing his review that told me about Goatstar. And I share the Google rating for context because when popping in to buy two donuts and waiting for the nice guy owner to put my selections in a bag we had a chance to talk about his business. (It may be a franchise but this shop is family owned and run.) I posited it must be a tiring challenge given they are open 13 hours a day on six days of the week (5a to 6p Mon - Sat) and ten hours on Sunday (6a - 4p). This led the young owner to share how some days, after getting home late after closing up and putting all in order, he gets up at 2:30a to be back in the store in time to have donuts made and ready for the 5a opening. So. That shared for context I'll ask folks to note that one of the reasons this Yelp score is not as robust as the 4.9 on Google is some here were unhappy to the point of 1 star review to have their toddler child disappointed the donut shop wasn't open when advertised to provide a promised donut treat. This was perceived by parent as not just an 'aw shucks' disappointment but a "...horrible business practice." OK then. So. Now I'll share this is operated by a hard working immigrant family who may have had a family emergency to not be open on a Friday morning when expected. But at the least I would wager this family has had more challenges to overcome as immigrants than having a promised child treat be postponed. Yes. I am feeling discouraged by foot stomping that I perceive to drive, well, entitlement. But that's just me stomping my 'put it in perspective' booties myself. EATS: On to the donuts and first to establish I am no expert because I can count on the fingers of one hand with several digits leftover how many I eat in a year. But on occasion I'll have a hankering for a good cake donut - preferably plain ol' with no add ons. And given this is my birthday week, when in theory calories to not apply, and given I had just enjoyed the most splendid early birthday leisurely lunch at Amano in Caldwell (highly recommended) sans dessert, I decided a donut with coffee would hit the spot as delayed treat at home. It was late afternoon when I walked in the door of Goatstar's sparkling new-ish space (open only a month I think) and late enough in the day for them to be out of plain ol' cake donuts. So I chose a cinnamon sugar dusted cake donut that was an even better extension of Mexican food theme from the Amano lunch. (As churro like, no?...see how that works?) The donut was delicious with coffee later at home. But not to stop there, I bought a pumpkin cake donut, 'tis the Fall season and all, and I will disclose that it was the perfect 'donut as dinner' later that night paired with a German Octoberfest Marzen beer. (See how that works as Fall theme thanks to the Boise CoOp's beer guru who helped me select the brew.) I shared both donuts - and the beer - with my husband. And we two reflected on how this "international cooperation" is such a lovely thing for taste buds. An Asian heritage immigrant family serving up what is perceived to be an All American food of donuts (although originated with Dutch immigrants coming into NY which was at the time New Amsterdam way back when) to enjoy with coffee brewed at home with beans from Latin America and also beer from Germany. All after a splendid lunch in a "mom and pop" eatery owned by a young man who was born in Mexico who learned to cook his great food because he spent time in his mom's kitchen. We are fortunate people who live where we do with access to all these things. Which we might teach our children to keep in mind too if faced with itty bitty disappointments. Like, say, a delayed donut treat. SELECTION: Goatstar's case includes raised and cake - frosted, glazed, sprinkled, mapled, chocolated, cinnamoned, baconed, pumpkined and more. Good ol 'plain ol too. And things like bear claws. Donut holes too. There were also savory rolled kolaches with cheese and another filling. I enjoyed our choices and were I in a donut frame of mind in this area again, I'd go in again. COFFEE: They sell it. But it might be best if you're a serious coffee drinker to source it elsewhere. No criticism, just observation that the coffee service isn't the focus. EAT IN?: Yep, a few tables and chairs. PARKING: Newish strip mall has private lot. ACCESSIBILITY: Accessible (aka ADA) parking near door and correct design for access aisle to sidewalk. Level in and all on one floor. Table seating is standard height. LOO: Didn't see a public loo - not required if a business is majority take out. Plan accordingly. read more

The donuts here are overall pretty good but my favorite are the cream puffs BUT they never seem to have them anymore.. we've tried coming the minute this place opens to get them and they didn't have any so I'm not sure about their consistency of making each flavor donut. I might have to find a different donut place that has cream puffs though such a bummer ! Also pay attention to what donuts you ask for and what they grab because multiple times now we have received the wrong donuts that we didn't ask for.. read more

We went to the Goatstar in Meridian, but I couldn't get Yelp to pull it up - it just kept going to the site in Caldwell. The Meridian place was great. We ended up there after being frustrated with trying to eat breakfast at the Griddle in Eagle because it was so crowded and we couldn't even find a parking spot. Of course as soon as we found one, this total jerk in a Maserati completely stole our spot-just swooped in even though he saw us trying to pull in. These are the people who have moved to Boise in droves. Anyway, this place is awesome. The donuts are delicious and fresh. The cake donuts are the perfect combination of crispy outside and soft on the inside. The customer service was great too. We don't go to this area much, but would definitely recommend it and would go back if in the area again. Reasonably priced too. read more

Since it was so close to closing the donuts would probably had been better 6-8 hours before when they were fresh. There was nothing about the donuts that were great or bad. My family and I come here often. We get two Kolache's, 1 dozen donut holes, and two assorted varieties (depending on what we crave that day) plus some morning beverages to wash it down. They are so nice and friendly plus fast too! I was born and raised in Texas and when we first moved here years ago I was bummed out because I couldn't find Kolache's and soft warm yeasty donuts for a breakfast treat. When they opened we all rushed over and couldn't be happier. 5 out of 5 stars all the way. I tell all of my friends and family back home about it and they want to try it when they come visit next time. I have never had a bad experience here and I'm sure I never will. I understand running out of donuts and closing early but to leave open sign on door open and have plenty of donuts in case and to be rude to my 5 year old asking for a donut and saying sorry no closed was just unacceptable. This isn't the place for me. Bought 3 apple fritters . 1 for each of us. 6.01 for 3 apple fritters. I liked the size as well as the crunch. The crunch was the crust of the fritter. Never had a easier time giving a 5 star review. This place is great!! The location is brand new so cleanliness is expected but seriously this place is like white glove clean.. really clean! The display case is immense and the large selection of donuts is quite impressive. They have all the fan favorites (talking to you bacon maple bar!) and all the old school tried and trues (old fashions, buttermilk's and apple fritters) and just about any other donut you can think of or desire. I love this place for so many reasons but the biggest reason I'm gonna continue my patronage is that I no longer need to drive to Meridian for a decent donut! Decidedly average donut shop. The donuts are okay, not great. They seemed to be out of a lot of stuff, and we were there during the early afternoon. We were told they only really have a decent selection in the morning and that the owners had been out recently. The coffee was also just okay. The prices were fair. Donuts are my kryptonite, so I'm fairly picky, so if you feel the need to stop for a donut you can do so confidently, but don't get your hopes up. read more

Hours were wrong on Yelp- this place doesn't open until 5:30 AM (6 on Sundays). They had very few options first thing in the morning. None of their specialty donuts were ready yet, just some of the basic ones. I tried the maple bar and glazed which were fresh and had a good flavor, but not amazing, which for a hot donut it should be pretty good, right? Second time here, the first time was treated poorly by the woman behind the counter. She was very short with customers and not at all friendly. I asked for a refill on my coffee nicely and she seemed very annoyed and after filling the cup slammed it on the counter. Figured the lady was either having a bad day or just a cranky person, so I figured I would give them another shot. Wrong move! Went here on Mother's Day and got 6 donuts. Was charged and paid without thinking then walked out because there was a long line. Shortly after starting to drive away I realized I was charge $17 for SIX donuts. I have no clue how that was even worked out and have run the math with their prices and can't come up with anything. This is by far the best donut shop in the valley. I'm talking about the Caldwel location. They are friendly, reasonably priced, and have early morning hours. A lot of bakeries in the Caldwell area don't open until 8 AM. They are missing the boat with the early morning crowd. The place is clean and the service is friendly. read more
