I was just here on the 4th to grab some goodies for my husband. They had a fritter of the day Saturday and it was cherry. Now that it's Monday, I decided to head into Guru to grab an a fritter of the day. New week new flavor of fritter. The gentleman that helped me today was super nice! I asked him what the fruit flavor of the fritter was and I was told it's cherry again. I told him that I wanted to grab the fritter on Saturday till I found out it was cherry as well. That's when I was told it's more like flavor of the month vs. week. I'm determined to grab a fritter that my husband will like so we will just have to wait till August. We have tried fritters from every shop imaginable so I'm determined to try one from here. But today I grabbed another Hipsterberry, a seasalt chocolate glazed bar and a cereal of the day. I didn't get a chance to eat the Hipsterberry on Saturday so I will have some today! You can't go wrong with a classic chocolate bar with seasalt and a cinnamon toast crunch topped donut. All 3 donuts were killer good today! Fresh, soft and so flavorful! It's hard not to get one of every donut from this joint. They all look so good! My husband and I got to start our week off with some great treats from Guru. Looking forward to coming back and trying a different round of donuts. Decent place in downtown Boise. Love the vibe! I don't really eat doughnuts very often, but when I do, it's almost always an Old-fashioned doughnut. This is what I use as a comparison to other doughnuts. It's my baseline. This one was good, but not at the top. The outer crust was good, and the icing was the perfect amount of sweetness. The interior was just right. We also grabbed a cup of doughnut holes, which is where we struggled. They were overly sweet and fairly dry on the inside. We ended up throwing the rest out, unfortunately. My other baseline is an Apple Fritter, so if I give them a second chance, that will be my next choice! read more

Seriously good donuts located in the historic Ivanha Hotel building. Lots and lots on options for donuts, and if you are vegan, no problem. There are lots of vegan choices thanks to the potato flour used for the donuts. We got the Hipsterberry. It was huge and perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The best way to go for breakfast is the Guru box. You get to choose a breakfast item, any donuts and a coffee for $11. The coffe is house drip but awesome and you can get a refill for a buck. We got the Southwest Breakfast Burrito and it was delicious. I love the chill vibe here and the relaxing music in the background not being blasted so that you can have a conversation. I love the artwork on the walks and the friendly staff. I even recommended them to my friends and they showed up an hour later. Guru has different donut styles and flavors with vegan, GF, and "regular" options (no vegan AND GF though). I thought it was cool that they make fried GF donuts (not from Boise so I don't know what the situation is here, but every donut shop I've visited elsewhere with GF options only had baked). I tried a GF hipsterberry donut (fried donut with lavender huckleberry glaze). I really liked the texture - maybe fluffy isn't the right word exactly, but it had a consistency very similar to non-GF cake donuts with just a slightly different feel. Not dense but not too airy either. The name is kind of silly but the glaze was really delicious! Great atmosphere in an interesting building with lots of seating and good music. Visiting some family in town and they brought us to Guru Donuts because it's one of their favorite spots and I can definitely see why! I love all the vegan and gluten free options and they seem to be very allergen-friendly. The donuts were all delicious, I tried bites of the old fashioned and the coffee cake crumble and they were both amazing. I ordered the avocado toast, and it may look simple but the flavors were surprisingly complex. The addition of the garlic oil with the shaved Parmesan made the toast so flavorful and I know this is going to have me craving this all the time! Yum! Guru is a downtown Boise staple! I've been going since they were located on Capitol Street. Their new location in the Idanha bon Main Street is more spacious. My go to is the hipsterberry. My husband loves the Boston cream pie. The donuts always have incredible texture and flavor! Of note, they avoid artificial ingredients. Really wish I could give 2.5 stars, because I have some Jekyll and Hyde feeling on Guru. The good. If you have allergies. There is no better place for donuts. I appreciate their efforts here and I suspect it's a top reason many choose to come here. Additionally, the staff is willing to ensure cross contamination is not an issue via new gloves, new sheet, clean boxes, etc. And the donuts themselves are very good. This place is really good for those that want a donut without risking anaphylactic issues. The bad. Starting with "to go" donuts, they stack the donuts. I acknowledge there is no way to ensure donuts don't touch (and this is not about the allergies, they will definitely put those in separate boxes), but some of their donuts have juicy or otherwise easily transferred toppings. Although delicious, especially if you like that flavor, they become inedible if you don't. Another inconvenience is the bathroom. It's not in the restaurant, rather, it is down some stairs, down a hall, and you must remember to get the key (not the most welcoming walk). Finally, parking. It's not great. There's paid parking in a few areas, but not always convenient. In the end, Guru is solid, and I would recommend it. But I'd also recommend targeting your visit when you are on foot in town, when you have time to eat there, and preferably find a restroom in advance. read more

Whenever I order donuts, I usually get them from My Donuts in Eagle because it's right down the street. Well this week my husband and I were doing a vegan diet just to give our bodies a little reset. With it being Valentines Day I wanted to get us a sweet treat but knew we'd have limited options. Did a quick search for "vegan donuts" and was pleasantly surprised when this place came up; have driven by it a hundred times in downtown but never really thought to look it up or try it. Come to find out they have an entire dedicated vegan donut menu! I ordered us the maple bar, the blueberry fritter, and the hipsterberry. I had the fritter and my husband had the maple bar- we've both taken a bite of the hipsterberry but at the time of writing this haven't finished it. The maple and fritter we both really enjoyed! A good mix of fluffy and denseness with a really nice flavor. The berry one is right up my alley with what I think might be lavender in it? (I have an unhealthy obsession with lavender foods). Regardless, lucky me , my fav Boston Crème were still available. This donut was ooey gooey and had the perfect chocolate topping. The filling is the best Boston Creme filling I have had anywhere! We also tried the cup of donut holes that are the essential and tasty on the go treat. So good, light & fluffy. Another good one is the High Priest. A bacon topped glazed donut that not only looks good but is tasty. That bacon trend was from years back but the salty and sweet still works so well. Of course there is coffee. Full five stars for the donuts. I mean, you're not going to get a better donut anywhere, I guarantee it. Great taste, great texture, great variety, and both vegan and gluten-free options. Five stars for both service and ambiance, too. If you're used to going to a chain place, where the seating is sterile at best, you're gonna love being able to sit down with your donuts and coffee and just enjoy the goodness. Marks off for the fact that, today at least, they served the drinks in to-go cups even if you made it clear that you wanted an actual mug. It's just doughnuts, how good can they be? They are really good! I am a sucker for maple and I loved their maple and bacon burger. We had a few people with us who were new in town and wanting something GF. They had all that plus vegan options too. We got a box of doughnuts, and listen, they will set you back about $34 but (thats the only downfall), but they are handcrafted and really delicious. They even made their way back to CA with us. Only bummer was that other breakfast options were premade like sandwiches and burritos for our non-doughnut eaters. But our coffees were great and the service was exceptional. I have very recently been hired to be a tour guide for a walking ghost tour in downtown Boise and I was just walking my route before I actually begin taking groups of people to the locations on my tour... the Idanha apartment building is one of the stops and located inside the building is Guru donuts. I had never tried them before and wanted to give them a try after seeing an appealing menu. Service was great - and fast! I had the hipsterberry donut which has a glaze made with blackberries, blueberries and lavender- OMG so freakin' tasty! I also got a small Italian soda with coconut and lavender flavors which was also pretty good! I noticed on their menu board that they also have avocado toasts and I think I'll need to try that, one of their coffee drinks and a vanilla coconut mini donut next ! YIKES! Easily some of the worst customer service I've ever received. Never met a more rude team. The girl at the register sat and glared at everyone like we were unbelievably inconveniencing her by being here. There was zero notification or indication my way that my donuts were boxed and ready, the cashier snapped at me after I "checked in" for rewards, and there was no instruction about where to grab our food once it was done. After a group of people stepped out of the way I asked the guy behind the donut cases if the box sitting there was mine the guy deadpan says "it's been here for awhile" and just stared at me. Our breakfast items then took forever to come out and there was barely an announcement it was ready. Some of the worst donuts I have ever had, full stop. Guru Donuts is a modern donut shop offering vegan and gluten free options, and inventive flavors along with the classics. The donuts are a brioche style, but so overproofed that their texture is similar to a dry dinner roll. 7 donuts and a latte with oat milk set me back just under $30. Unfortunately, the only donut that was even edible was the Old Fashioned, which was tiny and overly oily. The others were dense and bready, and their icings fully crumbled off upon biting into. The ingredients seem to be good quality, but Guru desperately needs to work on their recipes. Two stars because my latte was excellent. Come here for coffee only. read more

Trendy place. I was REALLY excited when I randomly found this shop while walking around looking for breakfast places. The donuts are on the larger side of the scale. I bought a chocolate cake donut (Guru Chocolate) and a glazed donut (aka The O.G.). I was a little disappointed with the chocolate cake donut, but wonderfully surprised at how great the glazed donut tasted! I believe the glazed donut has flaxseeds in it and they are yeast-raised, vegan!!! How awesome is that! They also offer other fun and seasonal flavors. We visited Guru donuts based on a recommendation from my sister who takes her grandson here bc he has a lot of food allergies and they have a lot of vegan donut options which is great. I'm originally from California and premium donuts are on every corner so my expectations may have been a little high when comparing to places like Sidecar and JD Flannel etc. Although these were much better than the grocery store donuts we had picked up the week before and some of the flavors were unique (like their Alice in Wonderland donuts which was super yummy) I still felt a little underwhelmed when thinking about how much I paid for each one.
