I love GF salon in general (and Godfrey) but Colleen is really an amazing colorist/stylist -- she listened to all my specifications and needs and then made sure she understood me exactly by asking questions and telling me how she would approach it. Many hair cutters/colorists do not give you specific information about what they will be doing and don't listen very well, but Colleen is extremely attentive and detail oriented. The results were pretty amazing, exactly what I had wanted -- we were both super excited! And she is a peach; I've always loved the vibe of the salon and the people who work there. I was 23 years old and I'd just moved to Princeton for grad school. I was lonely, black and stressed. And my hair was a mess. So I saved up a few hundred dollars and headed down to the Godfrey Fitzgerald Salon. A few (white) girls in town had informed me that there was, indeed, a gorgeous black man in town who had long, stunning dreadlocks -- just like me. I was excited and happy to know that there was someone in Princeton NJ who not only looked like me, but would also be able to help me. It was a sweltering hot afternoon, but I dashed from the Firestone Library as soon as my writing group had met for the day. I was headed to Godfrey's! This was going to be amazing! I walked into the salon, and... ...you could hear a pin drop. Every single woman in that salon was white, and there stood Godfrey, his gorgeous dreads swept back away from his neck as he worked... ...until he looked up from his task and saw me. He gave me a look of disdain that I cannot put into words and I have never quite been able to describe since. Meekly, I asked, "Hi...do you do dreadlocks?" He looked me up and down with a disgust and scorn that I had never before witnessed and I have not experienced since, and spat, "No, I do not." He was almost seething with embarrassment that my despicable black self had dared to enter his pristine salon, intended to be a safe space for white women, with my horrifically too-black request. Every white woman in that place looked up from their magazines and cell phones and tablets to see who had inspired such a vomit-inducing "No" from their precious Godfrey. I hung my head and slipped out of the salon, hoping the earth would open up and swallow me whole. Eventually, I found a salon 2 hours away from Princeton, and it was worth the drive. I was welcomed and treated with love. I remember recounting my experiences to the Princeton University Black Graduate Caucus. The women members of the BGC that had been at Princeton longer than I laughed heartily. "Godfrey?" One of them said, "Are you kidding me? You thought GODFREY would touch your nappy black hair? Oh no ma'am. The closest he is coming to black hair is throwing a weave on the Beyonce's of the world. He probably tells people he does natural hair but the only natural hair he does is celebrities. Like, if Rihanna puts a protective style in, he'll maintain what's underneath because she's Rihanna. Otherwise, trust me, your regular black self is not welcome at Godfrey's. We are just PhD students at Princeton. We ain't nobody." Another girl said, "Honestly girl, I am light-skinned and people tell me I have 'good hair' all the time, and even I would rather go to the Macy's Salon at Quaker Bridge than have mean ass Godfrey touch my hair. He is rude as hell and he doesn't even know my black ass mother is Vice President of State Farm." In life, you don't always remember what someone did or said, but you remember how they made you feel. Sometimes, when someone makes you feel so low and hurts you so deeply, in public no less, you remember every detail. Especially if you are black. Especially if the person who made you feel awful is also black. Especially if that person knowingly made you feel that way in front of white people, who often regard our curl patterns with disgust. Godfrey Fitzgerald hurt my feelings so badly that I cried the entire way back to the Hibben-Magie apartments, wondering if I was so wretched and horrid-looking that I had been exorcised from my own community. Thankfully there were other black women around Princeton who had had similar experiences with Godfrey to disabuse me of that notion, but still. I found this salon on yelp and booked an appointment on a recent trip to NJ. The online booking process was very easy and I loved that the prices and services were listed. Many salons are not transparent with pricing. My appointment started promptly at 3 pm, and I was finished by 4:05! I have sat in salons for 2-3 hrs for similar services. Five stars for time management. Godfrey really took his time with my wash, condition, blow dry, haircut and flat iron. I was extremely happy with my haircut and style. The salon was clean, comfortable and relaxing. I also enjoyed chatting with Godfrey during my service. If I lived closer this would be my go to salon. Excellent service and experience. The staff here is very friendly and it's a beautiful salon but my scalp was flaky after shampooing :( and my hair was not straighten all the way. I have coarse hair and a barber in south Jersey knows how to tame it sooo nicely so I know it's possible. I was a little sad with my results. I would still suggest trying this place if you are in the area. I don't think it's the best place for me though :( I learned today that my favorite stylist Brittani recently joined this salon so I may have to give them another try. I went to Godfrey's salon in Dec after Christmas with my sister in law for a haircut. I normally get my hair cut for $20 at Astor Place Hair Cutters in NYC. Godfrey was amazing...he was so attentive and really made me feel like I was the most important person in the room! When I went back to work..I could not believe how many people...at least 6 different people complimented me on my hair cut and told me how I looked amazing. It's something subtle...but they noticed it. They were saying exactly what he envisioned it to be..."classy" " beautiful" "sexy"! Now I care about my hair. My daughter wanted a blowout and cut so I made an appointment online with Zach. My appointment was for 5:15pm, I arrive at the salon (on the day of the appointment) at around 4:45-4:50pm and the salOn was closed.....lights off, door locked....closed. Standing outside and confused, we decided to give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he stepped out for a min or was running late. We waited outside (in the snow)for about 15 mins and still no sign of anyone. I even called the salon three separate times thinking maybe the phone was linked to a call center or cell phone. Finally at around 5:10, I left a voicemail explaining how my appointment was for 5:15 and there was no one there to do my daughter's hair. I never received a call or email beforehand telling me that they were closing early. I received numerous emails prior reminding me of the appointment and I confirmed the appointment but yet I was still met with a closed salon. The botched appointment was on Saturday; Monday I sent an email explaining what happened and wondering why no one reached out with and apology and/or explanation. It is now Wednesday evening and no one has called me back regarding this situation. I am shocked at how unprofessional this whole situation has been. Why would you have an online booking if you don't honor those appointments? I left a voicemail, so I could only assume someone had to have listened but didn't think it was important to reach out to a unhappy customer. I would never attempt to give this establishment business ever again and if I was asked, I could not in good faith give a positive recommendation. read more

I really wish I didn't have to leave a bad review. While the staff is outwardly courteous and I did enjoy my experience, they are super shady about pricing. I got a color and cut and before I went in, I asked for a price quote. Once everything was done, however, my bill was more than twice than what they originally quoted, even with the student discount. They chocked this up to my "hair needing more tubes of dye" which they conveniently forgot to tell me about until the damage was done, despite the fact that when I got the price quote I was very clear about my hair length, texture, and thickness. While the cut and color looked great, the color didn't even last more than a month despite my care in preserving it. I didn't even need to get a root touch up, that's how much it faded! I moved to this area 5 years ago and I have struggled finding a salon that would deliver the high quality results I wanted in both a cut and color. I have tried several salons in Philadelphia and New Jersey including "top notch" salons in the Rittenhouse area and I was never 100% satisfied with the result. I went to the Godfrey Fitzgerald salon for the first time in September 2012 and knew immediately that my search was over. Godfrey is a true artist who is able to customize modern, edgy cuts to suit the individual person. I am a person who likes to change my hair color and cut frequently. Godfrey has changed my look in variety of ways since September and each cut and color change has been amazing. My mother has been going to Godfrey faithfully for years, and I never quite understood how special this salon is until I began driving her for her appointments recently. The service is excellent, and Godfrey and Zach are warm to every customer who walks in the door. Godfrey's salon is truly a melting pot and the services offered are diverse. My mom and I are both black women; my mother has natural hair which she straightens and I wear a hair weave. We both walked out last Saturday looking fabulous. Went here twice. First time for a cut and balayage with Godfrey. As I had my hair damaged at another salon and needed a fix, I made sure to go to someone who really knows how to work with hair and handle it with care. I can say Godrey did a good job with my asymmetrical bob. It was shorter than I'm used to but I got a lot of compliments for it from people I know and even random people I don't know. I have been at Godfrey Fitzgerald Salon & Beauty for many years. And during Covid, I have extremely comfortable to receive services and it's the same professional services and care before Covid. I appreciate all he has invested to keep himself and his clients. I have experienced outdoor and indoor services during this time. I was amazed with the outdoor heaters outside on a Sunny nice day in November to get my hair replaxed, colored and cut. I hope I can capture one of those specials. But Godfrey is worth every penny. He also gives back to the community and even his roots in Jamaica; teaching inspiring young women to do Black hair through work shops. He has worked with celebrities and common folk like me. A friend was raving about Godfrey and his salon - not only for his skills but his ability to really connect to his clients. I was perhaps a little too excited when I walked in and he had to tell me to chill out a bit (to better enjoy the fabulous head massage and chair) but he put all that crazy energy back into my hair and I can say he is the first stylist to truly get the look I was going for. Bigger, better was what I was after- and he gave it to me. The weird thing was - I left and my hair was a bit of a frizz ball (curly hair styling product science and humid day) but when I got home I styled myself and it was fabulous - then I slept on it and it was even MORE fabulous. First, I booked an appointment for a simple hair color and the salon cancelled my appointment at 10pm the night before. Then, I was told I could come back for a complimentary service a week later. So, I went back and they were trying to charge me $500 to do a service I didn't even want. When I asked for just the color, he refused to do my hair at all and would only do it if I paid for the complete color correction which I didn't even want! Godfrey did a beautiful balayage and cut my fine thin hair so it looked voluminous. I felt like a million bucks afterwards. What I like about Godfrey is that he really is the shit! He has done so much in his career but doesn't brag. The salon owner is a very good woman and everybody is very nice and welcoming in here. Zach duplicated exactly what I wanted and did such a great job!! He is just excellent with color selection/balayage and did such a perfect job cutting my hair so that it better shaped my face. The staff are extremely personable, genuine and friendly, so this was a very different experience than many salons I have been in across the U.S. I travel a lot so it is an extra challenge to find a great place with great people. I had a not-so-great experience coloring my black hair at the last place I went to. Zach did the best job fixing it and re-cutting it. Honestly the best coloring job I've ever had done. He was really informative about how to tame it down without loosing the built up highlights and how to maintain the look. The only problem was this was also the most expensive color and cut I've ever gotten by far. I went into the cut thinking it would be a certain number (as cited online) but ended up getting charge much more. And since I was too embarrassed to sound broke I didn't bother asking where the extra charges came from and just paid. With the color, cut, blow dry, and tip it was just under $300. Absolutely love the stylists here but unfortunately don't think I can afford to come back. read more

I've been nothing but delighted by Godfrey Fitzgerald's salon. I became a client soon after I moved to Princeton in 2006, and I've been loyal to the salon over three different stylists (Princessa, Godfrey, and Kim). As a full-time student, freelance researcher/writer, and now full-time non-profit fellow, I've found the salon's rates to be just within my "indulgent treat once-every-eight-to-ten-weeks" price point. (Just remember to tip in cash!) My boyfriend has been a client at Godfrey's salon for about a year, and he's always happy with his men's cut. I'm picky about his hair(!), and even I was impressed by his most recent visit. (He has complicated, semi-curly hair.) Making my guy look cute leaves me happy! Kim is my current stylist, and she's a great one. She's friendly, approachable, and makes me feel gorgeous. She's very competent and I'm often impressed by her techniques and patient approach. Kim's always responsive to my nice-but-at-times-critical feedback, and she's even redone/adjusted parts of a cut that I didn't like at first. We often spend a ton of time on my bangs -- inspired by Zooey Deschanel, but light enough for the summer. Kim's very thorough. She indulges all of my little requests, and she makes me feel well taken-care-of! I recently stopped in the salon for a complimentary walk-in bang trim, and Zach was just as patient and sweet as Kim. He spontaneously walked me through what products would work well with my hair type. (I've used the fabulous Godfrey products, too -- the Lava is my favorite.) I tried the product Zach recommended in one of the salon's oh-so-flattering mirrors, and it was magic. Magic! I've known the salon team for years, and I've always found them to be kind, competent, quite helpful, even hilarious. The girls up front (especially Frances!) always make me feel cute, too. I feel comfortable at Godfrey's salon, and that's important. As always, I'm looking forward to my next appointment. I went in for a layered mid-length haircut with Godfrey as i had read the reviews online that he had even worked on celebrity clients and so I assumed he would do a good job. Boy! was i wrong! I typically get my hair cut in NYC as i work in the city but since I live in Princeton, I wanted to find a stylist closer to home. I brought along pictures from my past of when I had my hair cut the way I liked and I particularly stressed the fact that i hated short hair and all i wanted was a more layered look. I did read good reviews on Zach before i made the appointment but I wanted Godfrey to cut my hair because he owns the place and i wanted my hair to be cut only by the "best". Don't get me wrong, Godfrey is a great guy, we had a great conversation going but i ended up with a disaster of a haircut. He gave me precisely what I feared short blunt-cut hair. He took several inches off and his first cut with his scissors was on my dry hair - a straight zip! That was completely unexpected! I had stressed several times that i had a round face and short hair makes me look more rounded and that it was important to keep most of the length and to give more layers. But with that blunt sweep, there was no opportunity to give any layers. now my hair is short, above my shoulders, with no hint of any layers! I have been crying ever since the cut and am now looking at extensions as that's how bad the hair cut is. I read in the reviews of this salon that this is not the first time that a customer has been given the exact opposite of what was requested! Why do they do the exact opposite of what's requested is beyond me?! Oh and they are not cheap. My horrid cut and root color to hide grays with Godfrey cost me USD 235!! read more

I feel bad writing this negative review because Godfrey is a lovely person with a great energy and wonderful personality. I just didn't like my hair cut. This was the first salon I went to after moving to central NJ. I think part of the problem might have been that I was spoiled by my previous stylist, who I had a long standing relationship with and who really understood my fashion sense and my hair. It was probably very naive of me to do this, but I went to Godfrey with just some general ideas (no pictures or concrete images to show him). Though this had worked for me in the past, it didn't work in this situation. I originally told him that I wanted to just shape my hair into an A-line bob, with the front longer and the back shorter. Though I have fine curly hair naturally, I usually wear it blowdried so it's straighter. I was hoping that this cut would allow me to sometimes wear my hair curly. I think that there was a lapse in communication, because Godfrey cut my hair for it to *always* be worn curly. He cut some very very short layers into the bangs which (coupled with the NJ humidity in the summer) make it virtually impossible to wear my hair straight... Every morning I wake up and it has kinked up right in the most visible place! This is very very frustrating for someone who wants to wear her hair straight maybe 75-80% of the time. Additionally, in the middle of the haircut, he came up with some ideas to change up the look and make it asymmetrical. I don't know why I said yes. I think it's because I've never really had a negative experience with a hair cut and have always had visionary stylists who came up with looks I wouldn't have thought of myself. And, I'm not going to lie, I felt a little pressured, since he kept saying that someone like me "needed" a funkier haircut than an A-line bob. Unfortunately, I didn't have a positive experience this time. He cut one side of my hair extremely short, and left a big clump of full hair on the other side. This coupled with the short layers in the bangs made for a horrific haircut that made me feel ugly every day until I went to another stylist to get it fixed. Obviously, I'm still dealing with the bangs (since that's only going to go away with hair growth), but I was at least able to get my hair symmetrical again. I want to reiterate that Godfrey is a very nice person and his staff are all friendly and wonderful. I think we just had some miscommunication and didn't share the same vision for my hair. If you're going to get a haircut with him, I recommend bringing pictures and making sure you have a thorough consultation beforehand. read more

I made an appointment for color and cut and was quoted a price by the part-time manager. At the session, Godfrey and I decided on a higher priced color technique. While he was applying the color, I confirmed the price with Godfrey and was told that it was $40 dollars more. However, I was surprised when I went to the desk to pay and found out that the total was now $90 dollars more than what Godfrey had quoted. The salon does not post their prices. Subjective pricing? Doesn't seem fair. I called the salon a week later since Godfrey had not colored my roots. Didn't this technique include a touch-up? Two weeks later I still have not heard back and left another phone message. It is now three weeks later and no call back. Poor customer service is never a good way to get repeat customers! This was my first visit to the GF Salon and it was quite an experience! You are greeted as soon as you walk in and offered refreshments. They will take your purse if your willing to part with it. Lol! Godfrey really listened during my consultation to issues of why I wanted a new hairstylist and he explained how he could correct things with my hair and even got me to switch from wearing my "normal" everyday style. Since, my appt was in the evening I was a bit bummed I didn't have anywhere to go to show how FABULOUS he made me look but we took pics and I made up some errands to run just to be in 2 stores that evening, Lol! So many compliments! The next days my coworkers loved it and 2 of them have already booked appts already to see him. I have found my new hairstylist or rather hair artist! read more

I tried a couple different hair salons in Princeton, and this is my absolute favorite. Everyone at GF is so incredibly nice, and Zach gives me the best haircuts I've ever had. I love that he's willing to accept the fact that I simply am not going to style my hair every day (or really, ever), and want a cut that looks great after a natural air-dry. Fantastic salon! Today was my second haircut with Zach. I have very curly hair but he knows exactly how to manage it. I drive all the way from Bayonne to get my hair cut by him.
