Now, the issue I noticed with this establishment is that they seem to get overwhelmed with the number of food orders coming in. There was only ONE person working in the back trying to handle all of those orders! The staff was personable, and they were pushing the drinks out pretty quickly, so I definitely don't blame them. I honestly feel like they need 3-4 people working in the back to keep up with the demand for food. I waited a total of 45 minutes for a club sandwich, which is a pretty long wait. I really hope they're able to get more help soon because the food and drinks are good, but the long wait times could definitely lead to more negative reviews, which would be a shame. read more

Orders are placed through an iPad, and there's only one table that seats about six people, so it's not really a spot to settle in and enjoy the coffee shop atmosphere. The menu is packed with fun and creative flavors that sound amazing on paper. I decided to try the Cookie Butter Latte, but it ended up tasting more like a cup of whole milk with cookie butter smeared around the inside of the cup than an actual latte. The cookie butter flavor was there, but the coffee itself was almost nonexistent. Overall, the drinks seem designed for people who enjoy sweet, dessert-like beverages with unique flavor combinations and cold foams. Have been excited to try this place out, saw it on social media a month or two ago. Went in on what I expected (and appeared) to be a slow period, 11am on a Sunday. And no other customers were in the store when I entered. Clean store inside, but small. Doesn't seem to incentivize sit-ins with only one semi-large island table. Anyways now to my negative experience. I placed my order on the kiosk. And waited. And waited. And waited. One by one, Door Dash orders kept getting fulfilled before mine. Eventually even other orders in store after mine kept getting fulfilled. After 20 minutes I finally went up to the counter and asked if my order had been skipped and they admitted it had. For the drink itself, I got a fresa con crema matcha lightly sweetened and I will say it was really really good! The strawberry foam gave the nostalgic taste of a strawberry nesquik. For the drink itself I will give 5 stars. Honestly, it all sounded phenomenal and had me genuinely excited to try it. I ordered a Cinnamon Toast Crunch Matcha, my partner chose the Cheerios Latte, and we decided to split a Chipotle Chicken Panini. Ordering itself was simple, but unfortunately, that's where things started going downhill. For three items, our total came out to over $40 before tip, which immediately felt steep. The payment process was frustrating -- both card scanners were malfunctioning, and the line quickly started backing up as multiple customers struggled to pay. The staff seemed overwhelmed and busy, so we had to keep trying repeatedly until the scanner finally worked. The café itself is also very small, making it difficult to comfortably wait inside or even hear when orders are called. Waiting outside almost feels necessary due to limited space. While waiting, I noticed several customers being told that items they ordered were no longer available or ingredients had already run out. Unfortunately, I ended up in the same situation. I was informed they had run out of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, so my only options were a regular matcha or a different topping. Considering the drink was nearly $10 and clearly marketed for its presentation, this was disappointing -- especially since the shop had only been open for about two hours that day. I was so excited to try this new spot because I had heard so many people mention it. They have self order stations and they made the drinks super quickly-- less than 10 minutes. I ordered Vietnamese coffee, vanilla matcha and the fresa con crema matcha. All of our drinks were disappointing. We live really close to this place, so my husband walked over a few days after the grand opening to get us some drinks and food to try and he said not only were they out of cold brew (and thus couldn't make *any* cold brew-based drinks), the crowd was insane. On our second visit, the cold brew was in stock but the crowd was still a mess. A good problem to have for the business owners in that it means a lot of business, but it doesn't make for the best experience for customers. In the weeks since, the crowds have thinned and now you can get a drink pretty quickly here. So far I've tried: - Mexican Mocha: Delicious. The spiced chocolate and cinnamon are such a nice combo. - Oat Horchata Cold Brew: A little less successful. Hardly any horchata flavor in this one, just tasted mostly of coffee with a dusting of cinnamon on top of the drink. - Banana Cream Iced Coffee: While it was good, it was borderline too sweet, which was disappointing because I'll jump to order *any* banana drink or flavored whatever on a menu. The banana latte at Kittea a couple blocks down is better. As for food, we've tried: - Bagel with cream cheese: Nothing fancy, just a good, chewy bagel with cream cheese, which they're pretty generous with. A few different bagel options. - Lox bagel: My husband's go-to. While he really liked it and said it was "a solid version of what it is," he did think it was a bit pricey. - Ciabatta bacon, egg, and spinach breakfast sandwich: Really good. The bacon was cooked perfectly, the scrambled egg was fluffy, the spinach wasn't all wilted and sad, and the house spicy sauce added a nice kick. So far, Gold Bean has been a bit of a mixed bag with mostly positive results, so I feel good giving it four stars instead of 3.5. There are a few other drinks on the menu I haven't been able to try yet, and the stuff I did like was good enough that I'd actually want to return to get them again (and in the case of the food items, I already have). I love gold bean's location in Berkeley so I was excited to check out their second location in San Leandro. Walking in. I immediately noticed that it was a lot smaller than the Berkeley location. They had one giant table with eight chairs and self-service kiosks where you can order. (If you order on snack pass, your first drink is 15% off) I ordered the Lucky charms latte and the peanut butter and jelly matcha. Both drinks came out super fast and I was excited to them. The lucky charms latte was really good. I was kind of scared that it was going to be too sweet since the snack pass app didn't give me an option to adjust the sweetness. It didn't really taste like Lucky charms. It kind of just tasted like a vanilla latte with Lucky charms cereal on top. I've been seeing this cafe online and had to try! Came in on a Thursday morning and used the self service kiosk to order matchas and a lox bagel. It took about 10 minutes to get my order. Loved the lox bagel and my drink was the matcha with cream was delicious! My friend enjoyed her matcha which was topped with cream and strawberry. Walking into this new cafe I was surprised just how busy there were on a Sunday evening. There's a small seating area with about 6 seats to wait after you order on the kiosk.
