Came here for a quick coffee run and decided to try this place out. Since the last place had closed down sadly but this coffee sop is true coffee shop! I love it here to the customer service to the coffee itself! When I walked in I was greeted right away and had plenty of options to choose from. I decided to get the Mexican mocha which was a miss for me it had a weird spice aftertaste. I mean I know us Latinas are spice but we sweet too lol! My man got the crème brûlée latte which was sooo delicious!! I for once chose a bad option usually I am the one who always picks the best option! I got a double espresso. They roast their own beans, this one seemed like a medium roast. Had good crema and a creamy texture. I got more volume than I expected (maybe two double shots) and the shot was a bit bitter-- but more dark chocolate than burnt. 2.5 / 5.   I'd come again if I was at the library and try buying the beans for home as well. read more

I give this place a solid 3, it's pretty good, I did have to ask for an extra shot of expresso because it wasn't as strong as I like it but it was pretty good I would go back again. Just a heads up no seating and I think they don't open until about 8. Which for a coffee place seems pretty late. Right next to the library so that's pretty cool too. I'm definitely a fan of Zocalo Coffee and had my first avocado toast at their Bancroft location in San Leandro about 8 years ago. I remember how nicely prepared, fresh and delicious along with their other breakfast items and latte. Zocalo Coffee is now located in Downtown Hayward at the Main Library. Smallish cafe with about 4 outdoor bistro tables offering: house-made pastries, quiche, grab-and-go breakfast wraps, herbed chicken salad,and turkey wraps with the usual coffees, lattes, teas and fresh-roasted Zocalo coffee beans. I've visited twice and ordered a latte and creme brulee latte adjusted for less sweetness. I was hoping to get their fresh made biscuits and caneles but sadly (for me) sell out early...not that many spots offer caneles in the East Bay so I'm always in search of... :) Both times Mimi working the counter and always friendly and helpful. ordered an iced americano and a pastry, recommended by the staff on shift. it was a delicious experience; would highly recommend taking the time to stop by to try their beautifully made coffee and pastries on display. Not sure if the pastries are made in-house and/or delivered by a third party. but the pastry I had was soft as mochi and tasteful like a chocolate cupcake; combine them together and you get the cannelle de bordeaux. it was a nice pairing -- iced americano and a cannelle pastry? must get and try. the staff was super helpful in helping me decide on what pastries to get. went with the canelle pastry. glad I had gone with her decision; it was delicious. read more

Eh.. this coffee shop is just whatever. Same layout and feel of the old Hippies Brew except the drinks are different. I had their Mexican spicy mocha which was way too milky and light tasting. It doesn't compare to the other Mexican spicy latte/mochas I've had at other places. Theirs lacks that cayenne spice that burns the throat, the thick rich chocolate mocha taste and texture, and that cinnamon taste. There's not much to choose from. I will say, this is a great addition to the library next door though; people can sip while watching their kids play in the children's sections of the library. I won't be coming back. read more

Service was astonishingly rude. Poor child should not be interacting with people. I came to this establishment asking for a very specific item, and I think she was more concerned with something else (e.g. her phone, playlist, etc) that she clearly didn't grasp or want to grasp my order. Not sure of her barista training, but I asked for something simple. Then when she made me something else wanted to argue and tell about what I would get vs what I ordered. Smh. I placed an online order for an 825 AM pickup. We arrived at 830 and the store was still not open. Their Instagram says they open at 7 on weekdays and their yelp says 8. I left at 9 with no coffee. I tried to call for a refund but no one has gotten back to me. Do not place an online order. Every time we have picked up the online order, the barista makes it when we check in instead of having it ready at the estimated pick up time. Now they took our money. read more

Really happy there is a local cafe in the heart of downtown Hayward again. Zocalo Coffee is delicious & the staff are very kind and helpful in answering questions about their specialty latte. Such a cute local coffee shop. This may be a new coffee shop at this location, but it has been a different coffee shop in the past. It had been hard going to the library with no caffeine and I am glad that this place opened up. I got the Creme Brulee Latte and it was DELICIOUS. I got there right when they opened at 7am. I was chatting with the barista and told her that I worked at a school and I loved that she got to know me more as she was making my coffee. I told her that I used to work with Kindergarteners and now I deal with Middle Schoolers a lot more now. She was like, WOW you must have a lot of patients because you have to deal with them everyday. At least with difficult customers, sometimes I see them again and sometimes I don't. She was really friendly and I loved that she wasn't there to just make coffee but made sure that she really connects with the community. I told her that this was my first time and she asked for me to taste my drink and it was DELICOUS. I wish I had gotten her name, but I will definitely be coming back and supporting a small business. read more

The drinks were impeccable! Normally Starbucks puts too much ice to the point were I have two sips of drink, but here the ratio was perfect. Staff were super kind and patient while I was looking at the menu and I didn't at all feel rushed. Though the place is tiny it's very cute! this place is cute and conveniently inside the library. nice decor and cool brand! seems like they sell their own beans. three stars for the matcha, two stars off for dirty equipment. the matcha was pretty good, a bit on the powdery side but the flavor was strong. i have not tried the coffees yet but am looking forward to that ! the espresso machine was kinda dirty though. i was a barista and was slightly appalled at the lack of cleanliness. the portafilters had very large espresso stains and the drip counter was very stained. please clean your portafilters after at least 2-3 uses, best if after each use. also the steam wand was not cleared or wiped down before and after use. this will affect the strength of the steamer as older milk is still stuck in the wand. anyway if this place was cleaner i would definitely be a regular. i can imagine myself getting a cortado here and then reading one of those extremely straight alpha hockey white wattpad height difference books in the library read more

So happy to see Hayward has a new coffee shop in the downtown area! First time coming today and ordered a creme brulee latte with oat milk. Personally it was not my favorite drink but it wasn't terrible. I would still come back to try something else. Service was also great. I would come here a lot to hippies brew and was sad to see it closed, saw this place opened and was like... eh why not try it. pretty small but straight forward menu. I like sweet coffee so I got their crème brûlée which was alright. pretty artificial tasting. got the breakfast burrito which I guess I spaced out on thinking it would be made there, but their food layout was giving airport vibes just a grab and go situation which I didn't like very much. but considering the space is limited there's nothing really you can do, but the service was good and friendly! overall I feel bad but this place is pretty much eh. the prices were honestly more expensive than Starbucks or Dunkin. And you can get better food at those places for the fraction of the price. nice place to try once, wouldn't come here again. Maybe if I were to study in the library all day. read more

edit: To provide details as requested by the owner, this was Saturday 3/29 around 2:50-2:55 pm at the Hayward library location. The people working were the one on the left in the photo of 2 baristas, and the single one w/ arm tattoos in the other photo posted to this page. After I paid for my latte, I heard the tattooed barista ask the other where a clean container was. They both looked at the sink and the other giggled and said "I'll wash them," but just stood there chatting as the first one made my drink. I even heard them questioning which things were clean/used. All of this led me to doubt the cleanliness of this place and their knowledge of food safety and I regret not just throwing the drink away. I was looking out the window when they poured the milk so it could've been dairy, or dirty equipment, or both that made me sick. The only other thing I consumed yesterday was breakfast that I shared with someone who didn't get sick later in the day, so I'm certain it was the latte. I understand accidents with mixing up milk happen but this situation as a whole was totally unacceptable. Original review: The $7 coffee was suspiciously lukewarm and the dishes in the sink were piled to the top so I wasn't sure about the cleanliness of the equipment (the 2 baristas were joking to each other about this as they figured out how to make my drink), but I drank it anyway. I had asked for non-dairy milk because I'm allergic to dairy. They either gave me cow's milk or food poisoning because I got a stomach ache within an hour and was horribly sick through the entire night. read more

I was SO happy to see that Zocalo Coffee had opened up at the Hayward Library to replace Hippie Brew, which had closed some time ago and prior to that had terribly erratic hours. I love the Zocalo in San Leandro so them opening a branch here in my hometown was just a delight. The coffee, food and service were all top notch. The library cafe is small with no indoor seating, but plenty of outside seats (and Spring is ALMOST here), and you can eat/drink in the seating area in the library right nearby. You can bring your own cup if you've got a travel mug, always saves on throwaways. read more

I was very excited the library finally opened a new coffee shop. The place is adorable. The staff were really welcoming. I got the crème brûlée ice coffee because I seen it pictured on Yelp (very yummy). I wish they did have a full menu of specialty drink displayed. My daughter and I shared the bacon breakfast burrito and it was delicious. My other daughter got a muffin that I believe was almond and chocolate, I'm not a huge fan of muffins typically but it was very light and I enjoyed the flavor. I will be returning read more
