So my biggest complaint about my neighborhood was the lack of a solid bodega. There is truly nothing better than that local store who knows exactly what you want when you pop in at 2 pm or 2am. By now I was thoroughly convinced that there was nothing like this by me though, it has been a while after all. Well it turns out that I take the same way home from the subway every time, and if I had only turned in one block sooner I would have been in blissful sandwich land from day one (as opposed to day 751). That mistake was rectified on the 4th of July thanks to some kids with some loud fireworks. I mean, who doesn't want to see teenagers blow themselves up..er I mean, wow us with pyrotechnics? Walking towards what I assumed to be a kids last day on earth, I was stunned to find what appeared to be a shiny, clean bodega. Even in my semi (ok very) buzzed state, I made a mental note to come back here, if only to see if I were hallucinating. I was not, turns out there was an amazingly normal bodega not that far from my place the whole time. The staff is super nice, the sandwich on point both in preparation and in price. Seriously, so happy I found this place it absolutely makes me feel more at home to have a local bodega. If you live in the area (especially if you're over by the park like us, aka "no food land"), check this spot out, I'm guessing you'll be as happy as I was to find it*. ________________________ *Assuming that a friendly bodega owners and greasy sandwiches make you happy, but to be honest, if they don't we can't be friends.

The food was great but the service was the real highlight. We were waited on by a nice young man who happens to go to the same college I did! The service was great and the staff were attentive. We will be back!

The salads we ordered were underseasoned and lacked even basic salt. The farro salad, which was described as containing mint and watercress, was missing both ingredients. When I mentioned this to our waitress, she replied, "The watercress is in there--it's just chopped up really small." As someone with a discerning palate, I can say with confidence that those ingredients were simply absent. They were the very reason I ordered the dish, so this was particularly frustrating. My steak frites, ordered medium-rare, arrived well done. I would have mentioned it had our waitress returned to check on our meal or asked whether we needed another round of drinks--but she never did. To add to the disappointment, focaccia was delivered to nearly every other table. It wasn't listed on the menu, but we were never offered any. A disappointing evening overall.

The arroz con gandules was a solid, well-seasoned base for the meal and came in a generous portion. We also grabbed a couple of pastelillos. The pastelillos con carne and the pastelillo con queso both had a great crunch and were packed with filling. The alcapurria was fried well with a solid exterior, and the inside was full of seasoned meat. To finish it off, we had the bacalaitos, which were huge, savory codfish fritters with crispy edges. It gets hot inside and you will have to wait, but the efficient service and excellent food make it a strong 4 star spot.

I'm not even sure what kind of meat they used, but it definitely wasn't cubed steak. The pork chops were fried far too hard, the rice started off promising but quickly fell flat, and the beans were just okay--they serve white beans, and I'm used to pink. The alcapurria was passable, but the masa was mediocre and the filling wasn't beef; it tasted more like chicken or turkey. Honestly, disregard this entire review and save yourself the trouble--don't even bother coming to the 116th St. cuchifritos.
