Looking for a good breakfast spot on the upper west side? Viand has you covered. We stopped in on a rainy summer morning and quickly found ourselves seated at an old wooden table with hot black coffee. Watching regulars mosey in and out, we ordered plate after plate of eggs, has browns, bacon, toast, fruit cups, orange juice, tea, and numerous refills of coffee. Excellent local establishments in the UWS. Great service and food. All the locals in the area meet there and that's why I decided to try it.

Food quality has gone down considerably the past year. For example, if you order the Turkey Burger, you get a small meat patty on an oversized bun, with a bad cut of tomatoe and the inner white crunch part of a lettuce head. My students from the west side rave about this place, so we stopped in for lunch on a school trip to AMNH. Everyone enjoyed a huge plate of food, and the staff masterfully managed orders from the 9 of us. The booths were clean, tables wiped, and I enjoyed a delicious root beer float with a generous scoop of ice cream, as a float should be. I love how Viand feels like a upscale diner, but the food is still pretty affordable despite the pretty vibes. Was able to walk in before noon without a seating issue although if you came after noon there would be more of a wait. - Lox Benedict - I thought this was a pretty solid benedict. The lox was half cooked, probably from the heat emitted by the egg, which made it an interesting texture to eat. I really appreciate the hash browns as they are slightly charred and were crispy at the same time. - Chicken Souvlaki - I was not the biggest fan of the chicken as there were some more tendon-y parts of the chicken. I would much rather get chicken schwarama from the streets. The fries were yummy though, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. - Huevos Rancheros - I was not the biggest fan of this, in a way I felt like this wasn't super worth my money as there were not a lot of ingredients on the dish. Size matters. Portions here are huge. Nice diner set up with hard working super friendly servers and staff. Easy to go here with kids, and they have lollipop treats. We arrived around 11:30 and got a table in 5 minutes, 4 adults and 3 kids. Within 10 minutes, the line was out the door. Great kids' menu; ours shared grilled cheese, big fluffy French toast, and nice pasta in butter. I failed to get a photo of Croque Monsieur special with tomato salad. Their egg options are good. Gyro and Cuban sandwich platters are huge and so flavorful, as is triple decker club. Fast paced, and they turn tables fast as they can. Clean and lively setting. This spot is perfect for families who want as nice as possible of a night out. There's a decent kid menu, a nice alcohol menu, and lots of other food menus. Our waitress knew that we'd want to order kid food right away, which was right on, and she also kept asking if we wanted another drink (but not in a pushy way). The outdoor seating is a nice option, and there's some plant coverage if you don't want to feel like you're right on the street. I wish the kid mac and cheese didn't come out so hot. Yes, it was tasty, but maybe there's another way to make it for the kids. French fries were perfect. I didn't think the hot chicken sandwich special was so great; good idea, but the pieces didn't really mesh well together, and it was very hard to eat. I'll definitely be back! Second time here on the weekend for lunch/brunch and had to stop to write a review. The location is perfect! Very close to Central Park & really nice to sit outside and people watch. The menu is huge but everything I've ordered has been really good so the big menu doesn't scare me here. I've gotten the Cuban sandwich, the breakfast burrito, BLT & the chocolate chip pancake & all of them have been really good. My favorite was the Cuban. Their pancakes are really filling because they're thick and fluffy. Very consistently made too from what I've seen. I always enjoy their pancakes (jumbo or silver dollars version). Their batter is like the perfect pancake batter. - Challah French Toast: Like their jumbo pancakes, the french toast was also soft, thick, and fluffy. I like that the french toast is just french toast -- it's not too sweet because they don't douse it in syrup or sweetener for you, it's not too eggy, and it's not too soggy (the edges are a bit toasted). The nutella and dulce de leche french toasts I think would've been too sweet, but this regular French Toast is a great textbook, no frills french toast. Service is great as always. I've come during both busier and quieter hours (weekend and weekday brunch), and service has always been amiable and quick. Disappointing diner. Ordered gluten free pancakes - they were terrible. They were soggy inside and had a strange metallic flavor. Perhaps the baking powder wasn't mixed in? GF pancakes have to be thin to be fully cooked - these were the diner hubcap sized one, so never going to happen. The "carmelized bananas" dish was chopped banana swimming in a super sweet corn syrup sauce. Yuck. The bacon was okay. The corned beef hash was homemade and the fried egg on top was perfectly cooked. But my enthusiasim dropped when I contended with all the gristle, they used the end pieces of the corned beef. Finally, when we needed service we had to go inside to get a waitress. Came here for lunch on a Sunday and got seated right away. The food selection is your basic American brunch & lunch and the prices are around $20-30 per entree. I got the pesto chicken sandwich and while the portion size was huge, the sandwich was very bleh. The breading was super super greasy and the chicken was reallllly dry. I know it's one of their most popular dishes, but I'm not sure why? It didn't taste great to me and the seasoning wasn't good either. It was also really hard to eat and pick up bc the bread was soo greasy, it was falling apart when I tried eating it. It came with a side of fries tho which were decent/average. My friends got the huevos rancheros which comes with no meat, eggs & hash, and tuna salad sandwich. Again, nothing we ate was anything to rave about and what you would expect it to be. My family and I have gone to the Viand regularly for the past 10 years or so but about 6 months ago we noticed a decline in service and after brunch yesterday where our omelets were dry and tasteless and charred inedible toast was served late and the service was rude including a waitress who argued with me when I tried to correct a messed up drink order and just an overall stressful and unpleasant dining experience my husband and I have vowed to never return. Very disappointing experience from the moment we put our names in (walk-in's only, FYI) to the moment we were eating. Put our names in to the hostess outside - it appeared that she calls your name just once and crosses it off the list.. even though we were standing right there just a few feet away near the outdoor dining tent.. good thing we asked if our names had been called and then luckily we got seated. I got chocolate chip pancakes and they were clearly burnt / overcooked, within each of the 3 pancakes in the stack. As comparison, another guest at another table right next to us had her plate of pancakes not overly overdone. I ask the waitress nicely - Can I please get a different order of the chocolate chip pancakes as these are very overdone/overcooked? Is that okay to get a new order? ... And you can get all dark or all white meat or mixed. I also ordered the potato leek soup on a lark. Wow. Might be the best I've ever had. Remember to ask for the croutons on the side if you order it. *Tourist Opinion* Im here on vacation from San Francisco with my best friend. We both had overnight flights and were running on about 2 hours of sleep combined. I appreciated that the bagel came with the cream cheese on the side, it allows u to control how much or little. The berry sauce was also the perfect amount of sweet to add on top. The berry bowl was good, typical berries not much to say here. But the bowl they served them in was a very nice blue cracked glaze design and I enjoyed that. SERIOUSLY GET THE LEMONADE PLEASE. Since I still have friends that live nearby I sometimes find myself having a meal now and then. I wouldn't say it's in my top choice of diners in the neighborhood. It is just convenient at times. Solid spot to dine at during Covid times with some nice tented outside seating on the street, and overhead lamps helping keep us warm. Plexiglass partitions, and healthy ventilation. They do a nice job of it here. As a diner goes this Viand is a step above most. Think hearty portions of better than most diner offerings you have experienced. My friend had the Short Rib Gnocchi which she really enjoyed, but was full after eating half and took the rest home for dinner the next day and said it was still delicious. I was more than happy to see an Impossible Burger on the menu which I got with cheese, caramelized onions, and sweet potato fries. Good choice if you're not into eating meats and it tastes almost the same. Tasty meal. Service was terrific, with more than enough water and coffee refills. They never rushed us to leave and kelp filling our cups over spirited conversation. I think we pretty much closed the place. Having the Impossible burger and chili on the menu makes this a good hearty choice for anyone staying away from animal protein. The service was quick and friendly. While his staff was struggling to get to tables in a timely manner (we waited 20+ minutes before I had to flag someone down to wait on our table), he spent 5+ minutes at a time waiting on one regulars table while completely ignoring anyone else in the restaurant including his staff who seemed annoyed and frustrated.
