What's unique about this place is that they use a champagne vinaigrette, which is sooooo refreshing and light compared to a blue cheese dressing. It's truly the best Cobb salad that I've ever had. Parking in this business park area is easy and the restaurant has counter ordering with both indoor and outdoor seating options. They let me pick from two other prepackaged salad options, marked with $10.50 as the price. I was in a hurry so I didn't ask for a refund of the difference, but the server said these options were more expensive than what I ordered so I was getting a good deal....maybe the marked price was their purchase price. The replacement salad I chose was an apple crunch, and wasn't on their menu. It was amazing. Diced apples, cheese, raisens, and some sweet crunchy type of granola. I also ordered a lemon lavender shortbread cookie. It was huge! Amd had a wonderful lemon flavor, and a very very slight lavender fragrance. I think I'll try them again, but I won't order online. Tried the praised and famous latka and the chocolate strawberry blintz. The latka was good, I wish that it had more than one egg for the price of $20 since the rest was just vegetables. Gold Finch is now my top 5 favorite breakfast houses in San Diego. It is a hidden gem tucked inside the business district at Torrey Pines and I absolutely love the ambiance of the restaurant. It is tastefully minimalistic and reminds me of the modern minimal Japanese interior designs in Japan. The owner put a lot of heart into every piece of the furniture and platings. This is a perfect place to go for dates, business meetups, etc. Food wise, it was amazing. The sandwiches were HUGE. They are super generous with the food and you will not walk away hungry. My favorite was the French dip brisket sandwich. The bread was so fluffy and soft and the au jus dipping sauce was perfect. The meat was also cooked to a delightful medium rare. Jewish delicatessens have been popping up more frequently across the area this year. Two weeks ago, the Urban Kitchen Group opened Gold Finch in the middle of The Scripps Research Institute, North Campus. It's not where I would expect to find a modern Jewish deli, but the nearby workers have a pleasant new option for breakfast and lunch. You can park in the lot behind the MUSE Torrey Pines building. The corner space was brightly lit from the sunlight coming in through the floor to ceiling windows. There was a small front patio outside the entrance if you wanted to dine al fresco under the shade of some canopies. You pick up a menu sheet at the door and then place an order at the service counter which had lots of freshly baked pastries on display. The seating area was to the left that also featured a large set of shelves containing dry goods for sale. In addition to the list of beverages, I liked how the back page of the menu contained a glossary of culinary terms. Not every customer will be familiar with the ingredients and items that were prepared by this kitchen so the cheat sheet is helpful. The front side of the menu had a healthy variety of baked goods, salads, entrees, and desserts. The 'modern' adjective described the chef's interpretation of some classic deli dishes. I chose the first item on the top left corner which was the Shakshuka. Three poached eggs, tomatillo, spinach, and za'atar were the components. Four pieces of nine-grain toast came on the side. The green sauce from the Mexican husk tomato made a savory base. If the toast had been buttered, that would have been a nice touch. I also picked a couple of baked goods to go... a slice of honey cake and a bialy. The cake had an orange blossom glaze which provided a citrusy flavor. The bialy had a filling of fig and goat cheese, the latter of which made the combination creamy. The setting, service, and food quality were more than acceptable. I see the biggest drawback of Gold Finch is the location which is isolated from where the general public can easily access the facility. If you are not an employee of a neighboring company, then most people who head to Torrey Pines will likely be golfing at the municipal course or hiking at the State Reserve. read more

Very dill forward also, but we really enjoyed this. Another healthy helping and accompanied by another side salad -The Giant Loaded Latkes: For $20, this giant Latke was worth every penny. The edges are perfectly crisp, with the center soft, hearty, and topped with mushrooms, broccoli rabe, horseradish labneh, and eggs cooked to your Iiking (we opted for a runny poached egg). You really cannot go wrong with this one. Literally a last-minute decision we made and so glad we did. Finally, the Arborio rice pudding. A great little ending to lunch. Great texture from the plump arborio rice and crunchy pistachio, great flavor, refreshing, and topped with mango and candied lemon. This is a great place to stop in for lunch for those who work in the area. My friend and I are both Jewish and were looking forward to some good food. I can't pass up latkes and a good pastrami sandwich. She had to have the chicken schnitzel because it brought back lots of memories for her. We decided to split everything. We ordered the half and half Reuben, pastrami and corned beef with gruyere, thousand island and sauerkraut on rye. We also ordered the chicken schnitzel that was served with an artichoke, tomato and arugula salad. We wanted to try the latkes, but didn't really think we could eat three entrees. One of the employees suggested that we ordered the children's portion of latkes, describing it as one large latke, big enough to split. We ordered it! Perfect solution! The latke was served 1st..... one maybe 3" in diameter latke, not what I would consider plenty to split. It was $8...... really? Anyway, later at home I noticed that the kids order of latkes was supposed to be 3 latkes for $8. Not sure what happened here. The sandwich was tasty. I thought that the meat could have been sliced a little thinner, but besides that, it was tasty. The chicken schnitzel was the problem. It was $24 and was a fairly skimpy piece of chicken and quite dry. The arugula salad was delicious. Just disappointing. Reminiscent of small time Jewish delis back in New York. Located in a convenient location for people that work in the area. Parking can be a bit challenging. Lots of outdoor seating, only some is completely covered with umbrellas. Others is partial coverage from pergolas. Note, the umbrellas heavily sway in the wind... We tried the kale and shaved brussels salad, the corned beef hash wrap, and the rice pudding. Salad had fried shallots on it, nice touch. Wrap had lots of bread, ended up opening and eating the inside only...but a yummy and dill-forward horseradish made up for it. After you place your order at the front desk, you are given a number for the table and the beverages and food are brought to you. The servers were friendly and accommodating. They were able to bring you what you needed and asked if they could clear the table when it appeared that you were finished. It is definitely worth the trip and the whole experience. Our GPS told us there was parking but we couldn't tell on our first visit if it was free or not so we parked out front, once we realized where the place was. Gluten Free items are marked and if you have questions they are answered without the blank deer in headlights stare. On our first visit we ordered Loaded Latke, Spinach Feta Croissant, Lavash Wrap and hot Teas from Paru. My latke was delicious, even more so because I didn't have to grate the potatoes. I loved the horseradish sauce and mushrooms on top. I'm not the biggest fan of broccoli rabe but my kid likes it more than arugula so we traded. We also bought a chocolate brioche. The teens enjoyed themselves, especially my kid since I don't really cook or bake much Jewish food at home. It gets complicated being gluten free however I still want my kid to experience some of the things I grew up on. When we left, we bought a gluten free cashew brownie (it was SO good and big) that we shared it and some rugelach in apricot and Nutella. The teens liked them both but preferred the Nutella. When we left, my kid asked if we were going to go back again tomorrow because he wanted to try more on the menu. We did go back the next day and ordered different items at lunch. Loved this new spot tucked away up north in Torrey pines. This modern Jewish deli felt authentic and the food was great. I tried the shakshuka and challah French toast and loved both! The shakshuka was a bit different than any I've tried before - it was green based and had lots of veggies, but the flavor was really great and I didn't even have to add my normal hot sauce. The French toast was super fluffy and the inside was almost creamy. The lemon cream sauce that comes with it was a great touch - really loved this dish! I also got a honey cinnamon oat milk latte which was delightful, although pretty sweet so something to keep in mind if you don't like sweet coffee. Would also love to see them offer almond milk as an option. Finally we tried the gluten free brownie and rumulsch - both of which were delicious. The gf brownie was super rich and dense but a great choice for the gf peeps out there! The restaurant itself is tucked away next to some office buildings with plenty of street parking on a Sunday. The inside is super modern and sheek and they even have an area where they sell some cooking / Jewish inspired staples.
