So many goodies, so little time! I bought two loaves of rustic sourdough bread for a dinner party, and they were terrific. Crusty and chewy with a great flavor. Service was speedy and pleasant. They also had several enticing looking pastries (especially the quign aman and monkey bread), but alas, there was no time to try them. I stopped by Lucky Bolt Bakery while picking up some Zumbar coffee beans, and I'm glad I did. The beautiful sourdough on display immediately caught my attention, so I had to give it a try. The sourdough was perfectly baked with a hearty, wheat-like flavor, a wonderful crust, and that fresh artisan quality that's hard to find. I also picked up a croissant, which was buttery, flaky, and pleasantly layered without being overly airy. It was satisfying and filling. One suggestion: I regularly use Kerrygold butter from Ireland with my sourdough at home, and the rich, creamy flavor is incredible. I highly recommend trying it with Lucky Bolt's sourdough--it makes an already excellent loaf taste even more amazing. There were so many other pastries that looked delicious, so I'll definitely be coming back--probably early in the morning--to get the best selection. If the rest of their baked goods are as good as what I tried, this place is going to become a regular stop for me. read more

I was excited to try good wholesome bakery place this am but was kinda disappointed. I came here around 910am and the parking lot was packed. It seems like the coffee shop next to bakery is popular. Around 940am the parking lot emptied. I thofhth the service was just ok. The cashier lady seems annoyed when I asked for salsa for my burrito and she just wasn't that friendly. Also the pastry and burrito were just ok nothing outstanding. There were barely any avocado in the burrito and barely any mushrooms. We visited right after a morning hike for some breakfast, and there was a great breakfast selection! We tried the breakfast danish, ham and cheese croissant, and zucchini muffin while also picking up their sourdough. Everyone absolutely loved the breakfast items. The zucchini muffin was delicious and not too sweet and the ham and cheese croissant was crispy and flaky and well balanced in flavor. We were especially pleasantly surprised by the breakfast danish which had potatoes and a whole egg and something akin to a tomato salsa in danish form! Lucky bolt used to be my go to when stopping by to grab a coffee and pick up lunch. Today I was blown away when I went to get a breakfast burrito. $13 for a breakfast burrito that is closer to $16 after tax and tip - I expect a good sized burrito that is fresh and tasty. We are in San Diego. The burritos are now no longer made to order, and they are tiny. The one I had this morning was a little bigger than a pack of cards. It tasted fine but the shrink flation is real. I also used to get the chicken soup because it was fresh and tasty but they are charging $25 for a takeaway container. This isn't Erehwon. We ate at the recently opened Lounge on a Saturday night. We had the mezze platter consisting of hummus, baba ganouche, an amazing salad with exotic local greens, lettuce wraps (calling it that doesn't do it justice) and a wonderful fresh pita bread roll. There was sourdough bread, focaccia, lots of olives and some pickled veggies to nibble on before the mezze came out. Our mains were spicy lamb "meatballs" with marrow as a topper and boneless chicken with yummy crispy skin. Thanks for offering Athletic Zero beer! That's my go to beverage nowadays. I went with cracked whole wheat for $13.50. They put a great toast on the bread. It was crunchy and very tasty. I thought the scrambled eggs were okay. They were not made to order but were of the pre-made variety in trays and cut into rectangular portions. The sandwich would be better served with made to order eggs. The caramelized onions were delicious, and so was the aioli. It was a good breakfast sandwich. I also had some black iced tea, which was very good. Came here as part of a set of bakery reviews I was planning on doing. Shop is small and unassuming, at a good juncture right off of a very popular bike trail and the highway. The place wasn't very busy on this very random, early weekend morning. Ham & Cheese Croissant - good initial flake. Layers are acceptably separated. Good flavor. Well filled with contents and spices. Savory and hearty. Chocolate Croissant - clear traditional construction with good, distinct layers. Clearly based on standard croissant dough as flavor leans more towards buttery. Chocolate is just a tad strong, causing a difficult juxtaposition to the dough. Monkey Bread - needs a bit more flavor per cluster but remains consumable. Few raisins - could use many more per serving. Good flavor and construction overall, but otherwise standard. Cinnamon Roll - flavor profile is far too light and often feels absent. Tastes just like coiled, laminated dough with a sprinkling of sugar. Not satisfying for a French cinnamon roll. read more

Luckybolt has been offering baked goods for the last year or two, to my knowledge, and this is some of the best bread in the county... If not the best. I believe the baker has some kind of ties to Wayfarer bread in Birdrock - as in worked there once - and this bread is crusty, dark brown, sourdough levain, and quite similar to wonderful Wayfarer but still unique to Luckybolt. Unbelievably good toasted or for sandwiches, the crumb is not too fine or cakey, but not too airy either. Only available in sourdough white. Eat it fresh the first day or so and be sure to slice up and freeze the rest in a ziploc for sandwiches and toast anytime you want. ...but wait - let me tell you about the BAGELS. Available only on Sunday morning from 8 AM on, these are the best bagels in San Diego county. Honestly, nothing even comes close and I've had them all. (Some of my bagel credentials trace back to making my own -- the full-on water-boil and malt etc tradition -- and visits to NYC, Jersey, and Montreal, where of course, they consider their bagels the best. LuckyBolt bagels are very crusty, chewy, absolutely perfect when toasted and then schmeared with some of their house mix chive cream cheese. At four dollars per bagel they'd better be good!!! But I gladly pay it and it sure as hell hurts to flip out a $20 bill for five bagels but... I gladly pay it. Don't buy all the jalapeño cheddar variety before I get there each Sunday or there will be trouble. I hate to even post this review because they only seem to make a few dozen TOTAL includIng plain and "Everything" so demand is growing week by week. read more
