So, this is something I have wanted to do for years and years now. Skyline vs. Gold Star; who is better. I am from Dallas and had Skyline 10 times or so over the years, but never had the chance to try Gold Star. I had Skyline last night (they have a location right next to my hotel). It was ok, fresh & hot, but just didn't hit that hard. Tonight, I found a Gold Star on Yelp, drove across town and ordered a Cheese Coney, a Cheese Burger (lettuce, extra pickles and mayo only), fries and a drink. I told the gentleman at the window that it was my first time trying a Gold Star, and I was excited. He said I'm really gonna enjoy the burger. He was right, It was klutch. Hot, fresh, cooked well and delivered perfectly as I had ordered. Love the crinkle fries, they are a huge PLUS. The Cheese Coney was soft, tender, great chili taste, plenty of cheese and a soft (steamed?) bun. This was not a production line meal; it was culinary excellence in my opinion - they cared about the food they were making and serving. They delivered above my expectations. I am sure the person working the window thought I was nuts, but it's the little things for me. After I ate, I called and spoke with a nice lady to thank them for the quality and experience. I am sure that she thought I was crazy too, but I like to call out good/positive behavior. It's important for me, especially in a world where people are so quick to criticize. The gentleman who served me has a great future ahead of him, especially if he treats everyone the way he treated me tonight. Grew up loving Skyline, which means you don't usually like Gold Star. With it being chili week, I stopped in for the 2 coney $5 deal. They were alright, but not amazing. Even the crackers aren't as good. I wasn't hungry enough for the special chili burger, but have heard good things about it and watched one being prepared. I'd hold off on the onion and mustard, but would like to try one another time. Server and staff were very friendly and the place was Spick-and-Span on the inside. read more

I've only been to this location a couple of times but have enjoyed every time I've eaten here! They are quick and accurate with orders. I appreciate how timely they are with their drive thru specifically! As for the food, it is everything you'd want from a sit down attendance but in the drive thru! Only complaint is that turning into the road to get to Gold Star is kind of weird. Other than that, I'd recommend this location to anyone who wants Gold Star! read more

One of the slowest locations in the city. Omg. I've been sitting here for 15 minutes and still don't have my food. There are three tables in the restaurant including me. my server is more interested in silly small talk than actually doing her job. The kitchen staff seems slow and lethargic. I've heard my server ask for things several times. The place is dirty and nearly every other table is covered in dirty dishes. A trash can right next to me.... Also, this location is notoriously stingy with the cheese. If the cheese is one of your favorite parts of dinner Just realize you won't receive the same amount here that you do at other locations or skyline. Y'all please get your s**t together. So, it was time for something tasty, and I remembered this Gold Star location just west of where I was. It's across (catercorner, gegenuber?) from Cincinnati Asia Market, which might be a bonus, but I think that most people shopping there won't be going for Chili. I'm complicated. In any case, a burrito bowl sounded really good. I like Gold Star much better than Chipotle (or is that Chipukely?) or Hot Head Burritos. I had them dress it up with jalapeños and black olives and Tex-Mex chili and the Firehouse Spice Mix, but I'm not sure that was added. It was good, but it just didn't seem quite right. The firehouse spice mix didn't seem to be there and there was some pink-ish liquid. It all tasted okay, but it left doubts in my mind. Man I have tried not to blast you guys because working right around the corner I have been coming there for years! But enough is enough, before it would be here and there that the chili cheese sandwiches would be mostly mustard and onion sandwich with a splash of chili and cheese! I have been to this location several times / when the weekday crew is on - the service is much better than on the weekends. Employees should monitor their conversations - especially if they are about gross topics while people are trying to eat. read more

My husband and I went to this Gold Star Chili the other night on the way to the airport. I had been wanting to try Gold Star lately because they have been advertising their new veggie chili. As a vegetarian, this excites me very much, and as I have had Skyline many many times, I also thought it was time to give the Burger King of Cincinnati chili a chance. (Side note: As much as I'd like to think that the new veggie chili is targeting vegetarians, it's probably more geared at the "healthy eating" segment of the population. Either way, I applaud them.) The meal was overall, very good, and I'm excited about it for a couple of reasons. 1) Skyline's beans and rice (their idea of a good vegetarian chili substitute), while tasty, is flawed. Who wants beans and rice on top of spaghetti noodles? Beans, yes. But, rice, on noodles? No. A veggie chili makes so much more sense. 2) The Gold Star 2 way (I went healthy(ish) and skipped the cheese) is not just tasty, but different than Skyline. Although I like the cinnamon-y cocoa-y flavor of Skyline, Gold Star's veggie chili is much more tomato-y and more like traditional chili. I can be in the mood for that sometimes. So, trying out Gold Star was a good experience and I'll definitely be back here rather than Skyline when I'm in the mood for a Cincinnati chili fix. Also, my omnivorous husband had the veggie 3-way (and a coney dog... go figure) and was very satisfied with the meal. I also ordered a side salad and the lettuce was WEAK. I really don't understand the hoopla over this fast food icon. The fare is simply not that good. The chili is thin and barely has any meat to it. The chili coney is three inches of blah. One last thing about the spaghetti...why do you serve oyster crackers with spaghetti? Probably to soak up the grease from the chili. I'll pay a little more and get much better quality. read more
