Though I've been to Lexington a handful of times, just yesterday was my very first visit to Gold Star Chili. They have a Cincinnati-style vegetarian chili made with Beyond Meat. The Chili Salad sounded strange to me since I've never had chili on top of salad before. But I figured, why not? It comes with salad greens, tomatoes, and fritos corn chips. I ordered it sans cheese, sans sour cream, and sans chipotle ranch dressing to keep this meal plant-based. I liked it! I moved away from my home town near Cincy decades ago and there is nothing so damn good as a wonderful dose of Gold Star, I honestly wish there was one in Charlotte, NC. The service was friendly and attentive. The food was was good. I had a 5 way because that is what I always get at these places. It was the appropriate flavor for this type of chili and the mound of cheese makes me happy. It is a cool location with round glass front. We recently stopped at Gold Star while driving from Louisville back to home. We have always enjoyed the Cincinnati Chili recipes, and so we're happy to find this location right off the Interstate on Man-O-War in Lexington. First, I have to give accolades to our waitress, Janice! She was amazing. We seated ourselves after Janice greeted us as we entered. Janice was outgoing, friendly and super helpful. We placed our order that was served very fast, made fresh and brought to our table immediately. I ordered two cheese coney dogs, piled high with shredded cheddar cheese on a soft fresh hot dog bun. Mouthwatering, if I had any complaint, it could only be that we don't have one of these restaurants nearby home. My wife ordered the two-way chili, and she loved every bite. The restaurant including the restrooms was clean, bright and welcoming. Our food was great while our service was over the top and exceeded five stars. We cannot but to recommend a stop at this Gold Star Chili when you are in the area. If you are traveling this location offers easy on and off access to Interstate 75 with plenty of parking. read more

Since I have moved to the area, I have became mildly addicted to this new style [for me] to eat chili. I never thought I would enjoy chili over spaghetti noodles, but I do. I remember the first time I ate at one of these locations like it was yesterday. I always compare my chili experience to that first bite then...and so far, they have not failed me. I like mine 5 way. I enjoy that cinnamon taste as I enjoy my cheesey mounds of goodness. Gold Star is one of my favorite lunch spots. You can get a chili cheese coney combo for less than $8 and who doesn't love a good hotdog?!?! This particular location is one of my favorites and the last time I was there the services was A1!!! I got hot fries!!!! And those of you who follow me, hot fries are what life is all about, well that and hot wings... oh and tacos, but I am getting off track here. I am supposed to be talking about hot dogs, whew. So the hot dogs are amazing and they pile on the cheese. Now, I am not huge for tons of cheese, but I am free to adjust to my liking, but that is not any type of complaint. Service is huge and our server was one of the best I've ever had. She was very attentive to our needs and I also noticed that she didn't slow down the whole time we were there. She was always finding something to do with very few customers inside. The food was excellent. My husband and I tried the dip, it was delicious. Stopped in to satisfy my husbands craving for "Cincinnati Chili" on our unexpected trek north by car after the holidays. All I can say is staff was WONDERFUL, Welcoming, and warm, the Food was great-husband was happy with the 4-way and the rest of us LOVED THE FRIES-the dill and ranch on the bottom of the container won you a fan for life. These days finding good takeout fries is very challenging-and these guys have cracked the code-crispy outside, steamy soft inside... these are GREAT fries! FOR THE LIMITED TIME METTS Being from Cincinnati, I grew up on Gold Star and the like. I often get a hankering for the taste of home with the chilli or coney dogs.. Today, I saw the sign saying "We got Metts" had to stop. Got two at $2.49 each. First off, expected an actual mett... not just the regular coney dog with alot of seasoning. Secondly, the seasoning was just cheyenne pepper and a ton of salt... Actually tasted like just Tony Chachere's seasoning dumped on a coney dog. My father and I went here a couple weeks ago and it was my first time ever going inside! Everyone had masks on and placed us 6 feet away from other customers so that was nice. The food....... the food was absolutely amazing and for the $7.00 it cost me was a HUGE amount. I took at least 80% home and was stuffed when I left lol. I am liking this place less and less with each visit. I usually make a stop here for food when heading to and from my parent's house in TN. Usually, road trips entail slim pickings for vegetarian food, and I'm stuck eating french fries the whole way, but Gold Star left a positive impression in my mind at first - they have vegetarian chili which you can even get Cincinatti-style in the form of a 5-way - what a novelty for a traveler! But as the novelty wore off, I realized that the vegetarian "chili" is but peas and carrots and other canned vegetables drowned in a chili-like sauce and can't possibly afford you the illusion of indulging in Cincinatti-style chili. Hope is not lost, however - you can still get your hands on some good vegetarian Cincinatti-style chili. Go down the street to the Meijer and buy the Gold Star Chili seasoning packet and a pack of Smart Grounds. Okay, so you won't be able to have it on the road, but I made this later at home, and it turned out spectacular. read more

For those of you not familiar with this style of hot dog, the coneys are smaller sized, and come with mustard, runny and slightly sweet chili, and a ton of finely shredded cheddar cheese. The past couple times I've been here I've had to repeat myself 3 or more times when they are taking my order at the drive thru. And both times when I've gotten up to the window my order has been missing something. However, the staff is always polite and apologetic when it happens and it hasn't always been an issue as I've been to this location countless times. The food is always delicious.
