I wish I was still in Houston, regarding my violin. Gold violin shop was a pleasure to visit. My kids took classes and they told the parents to learn, which I did. We were always so well taken care of there. read more

During late elementary and junior high, Gold Violin Shop was the place to get my cello fixed. How neat when I see this shop. Repair you would think you needed or accessories aside from rosin. Mr. Gold, hi. Kim @cello, read more

I went here to get my E string replaced, but ended up with all strings replaced, soundpost moved back to its correct position, and a fixed shoulder rest plus the lock on my case. Not even expensive and it's a great place with a nice guy, thank you! read more

A pleasant little shop which has stood up against the tide of modern music and even violin trends. The Suzuki mass teaching and that invention by Larry Fine(the electric violin) changed the music world. Gone from the public mind is the greatest of violinists: Jascha Heifitz. read more

Philip Wright Gold, my long lost youngest brother, is 60 years old today. When our Father was alive, the store, in a previous reincarnation, was a truly wonderful place. Philip's greatest success is his oldest son, Ira Joshua Gold, who since September 2005 has been a member of the National Symphony Orchestra. read more

Gold Violin Shop - Philip loves working in his shop. - Musical Instruments & Teachers Near Me - Houston, Texas

Philip Gold moved his shop a few years ago to its present location. He was recommended to me by the music teacher at the elementary school and furnished the rental "starter" violin for my son. While there, I left my bow for him to rehair and purchased a new set of strings. I also looked at the repairs on which he was working. The gentleman knows his craft. In addition, he has a good collection of instruments for sale. Mr. Gold also gave me the best music CD recommendation I've had in years: Rachel Podger's recording of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin (on the Channel label). Playing these well is a bit like an outdoorsman conquering Mt. Everest. This is an absolutely marvelous recording. Philip Gold will take care of your violin needs and, if you're lucky, you'll get good advice on how to improve your musical library. read more

Looking to rekindle my interest in music (I used to play up through high school), Yelp led me here! I was greeted by a gentleman who helped me pick out a new instrument--he suggested that while I do have prior experience, a beginner violin would be a good way to ease back in. He went over their procedures and policies, had me work on some forms, and eventually called Mr. Gold to inform him of his next project (it was an unfinished violin that needed the pegs, strings, bridge, tailpiece, among others). When I came back to pick it up, Mr. Gold helped me find private lesson teachers in my part of town (he has quite the list of teachers from all parts of Houston), and was a pleasure to talk with; he's like one of those people who have experienced so much in life that have the best stories to tell. Remember to be patient, as Mr. Gold is the only one working on the instruments, and he does so with great detail and care. (I believe the other gentleman is there as a part-timer, to help with getting people in and out of the shop so Mr. Gold can focus on the repairs) While I'm still a novice with my violin, I certainly recommend coming here for all your stringed instrument needs. Eventually, I wish relearn the cello, which I also plan to receive from here. read more

Houston is widely regarded as a melting pot of many different cultures, but in my personal experience, one of the biggest staples of this city is music. When beginning your musical journey there is a plethora of many different places to begin, especially for the people who enter the world of classical music. Violin shops can be found in many different places in Houston and there are even some bigger brands such as Lisle or Fishburn, but none of them compare to Gold Violin shop. Though this shop is unassuming at first with its small size and only having one permanent employee, that being the owner himself, this shop is by far one of the best experiences this city can offer. I myself a musician and have been for many years, and I always felt a bit distanced from other violin shops, though their quality is nothing to scoff at, I never felt the urge to go back to those shops and avidly avoided it. But once I found Gold Violin Shop, that part changed in me. This shop introduced me to a whole new world, and a whole new experience. Run by Mr. Gold, this shop provided me with an experience like no other. To start with, the instruments that Mr. Gold provides to his customers are all of exceedingly high quality and can accommodate every level of player. From violins, violas, cellos, and even contrabasses, this shop provides everything that one could need. Mr. Gold is always more than willing to not only let people test out their instruments before purchasing, but is also more than willing to accommodate every single price range. He not only provides top-quality instruments but he himself has a lifetime of experience that can lead his customers to the best fit for every size, level, and budget. Once the perfect instrument is found for each customer, Mr. Gold will also help people find a teacher for each instrument, a teacher not only in price range but also close to the area of which one lives. All across his shop, you can see notes and letters from customers both young and old of which he has helped across the years, though many may see that as simply a way to show customer appreciation, I see it as more a testament to this shop's legacy, and how no matter what age, it has helped everyone along the way. Other than providing instruments and instruction, the shop also provides one of the best maintenance I've ever come across. Mr. Gold takes the utmost care of every instrument, in my experience he has made me bridges, sound posts, pegs, and everything in between. His years and years of experience are nothing but a godsend, and he explains every step with attentiveness and ease. The true heart of this shop by far is Mr. Gold. His years of experience and incredible attention to detail is what elevates this shop from a violin shop to an experience that I truly believe should be felt by all. Mr. Gold truly cares not only for his customers but for his community and there is no greater man that I have had the pleasure to know than him. I plead all who are going to start their musical journey to come to Gold Violin Shop, but I also highly recommend those who are well into their musical career to come to this shop as well. Truly there is more than meets the eye to this quaint little shop. read more

Mr. Gold's understated manner belies a well-earned professionalism and being an excellent luthier. He is genuine, friendly, very helpful, and very knowledgeable of his trade. His many years of experience shine through in his ability to recognize minutiae like the maker of violin strings, to whether or not the neck is straight (my daughter's isn't), to how well an instrument has been made. He is so confident in what he does, he even invited me to watch him do the work on my daughter's violin. I was very impressed for my first visit with this establishment. I would highly recommend him for all your violin needs. His confidence in what he does rubs off on you and you feel good about whatever he has done. read more

In 2003 my husband and sons gave me a Gliga Gems II for Christmas. We took it to Lisle Violin Shop to be set up. When I brought it home and played it for the first time, it sounded horrible. The tone was very dull and the violin totally lacked resonance. In 15-20 minutes of playing time, it is already out of tune. I gave up on it. I've hardly touched it since. My husband took it to Mr. Gold at Gold Violin Shop last week. He brought it home two days ago, and to my enormous surprise, it plays like a dream. It now has a great sound. All I could say was "Wow!" Mr. Gold installed a new sound post, nut, button, Thomastik Infeld Red strings, and built a new bridge for it. What he did for this violin is truly amazing. I am very grateful to Mr. Gold for his expert assistance. Mr. Gold is definitely a master at bringing out the best in a violin. Highly recommended! read more

A very nice and quaint little shop. Extremely nice customer service, the owner is very passionate about his craft. I was there to pick up a cello rental, and while it took longer than expected, it was worth it. The cello plays like a dream- will be using Gold's again! read more

I left a violin, case and bow to be sold on consignment 11 years ago. I received a check when the violin and case were sold 11 years ago and a note that the shop still had the bow. I completely forgot about this until I received a check today for the bow which was evidently recently sold. What an honest man! I had completely forgotten about this. I also remember Mr. Gold refurbishing my Dad's violin - a wonderful job. read more

WOW!! This man is GREAT!! We bought a used violin. At 1st we were all were very excited about this 47 yr old violin. We took it to a couple of place to get a few things done to it (pegs, bridge, sound post). It worked for a couple of months... then teacher started having all kinds of trouble with it.. the bridge, the strings, it not staying tuned...The poor teacher was frustrated...LOL The teacher told my daughter to get a new one it's a 3/4 and that she needed a 4/4. So we thought .. ok. I guess you grew pretty quick.. lets go get you a 4/4. We went on a hunt for it. We went to Gold's Violin Shop to buy a 4/4. He measure her.. said she doesnt need a 4/4 for about 6 months. I was thinking... What? I then passed him ours and said.. well then... can you do anything with this one. He looked at it and said a few things... I was expecting him to keep it for a while. We waited for a short while for him to finish with the other people that were in his ship.. Once that left.. he escorted my 2 daughters and I next door to his workshop. Thought he was going to look at it and tell us a few things that could be done to the violin. Instead we watched him for 2 -3 hours, working and rebuilding our 47 yr old violin, we also got to listen to some great music and the girls enjoyed so much watching and talking to Mr Gold while he took the strings off and sound post and we seen him cut and measure a new sound post, and cut and measure a new bridge and oh.. he did painted the scratches away and much much more. Now ...This violin is the best in class.. It's so loud and sounds beautiful.. The teachers and student enjoy the beautiful music that comes out of this violin that the teacher wanted to us to get rid of. We just bought a violin that was made in 1934. My daughter cleaned it up. It has no string, no bridge, no sound post, needs new pegs.. it needs alot of work... We are looking forward to taking it to Mr. Gold. I highly recommend him. My daughter now spends hours practicing violin, Mr Gold inspired my daughter to be better that before and she's doing it.. We not only got our violin fix.. We got a whole lot more!! He's Blessed us more than we ever imagined. read more

Went in to the shop today and was impressed by Mr. Gold's service and knowledge of violins. He was able to make some adjustments to my violin that made it sound brilliant.
