Looking to rekindle my interest in music (I used to play up through high school), Yelp led me here! I was greeted by a gentleman who helped me pick out a new instrument--he suggested that while I do have prior experience, a beginner violin would be a good way to ease back in. He went over their procedures and policies, had me work on some forms, and eventually called Mr. Gold to inform him of his next project (it was an unfinished violin that needed the pegs, strings, bridge, tailpiece, among others). When I came back to pick it up, Mr. Gold helped me find private lesson teachers in my part of town (he has quite the list of teachers from all parts of Houston), and was a pleasure to talk with; he's like one of those people who have experienced so much in life that have the best stories to tell. Remember to be patient, as Mr. Gold is the only one working on the instruments, and he does so with great detail and care. (I believe the other gentleman is there as a part-timer, to help with getting people in and out of the shop so Mr. Gold can focus on the repairs) While I'm still a novice with my violin, I certainly recommend coming here for all your stringed instrument needs. Philip Gold moved his shop a few years ago to its present location. He was recommended to me by the music teacher at the elementary school and furnished the rental "starter" violin for my son. While there, I left my bow for him to rehair and purchased a new set of strings. I also looked at the repairs on which he was working. The gentleman knows his craft. In addition, he has a good collection of instruments for sale. Mr. Gold also gave me the best music CD recommendation I've had in years: Rachel Podger's recording of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin (on the Channel label). Playing these well is a bit like an outdoorsman conquering Mt. Everest. This is an absolutely marvelous recording. His many years of experience shine through in his ability to recognize minutiae like the maker of violin strings, to whether or not the neck is straight (my daughter's isn't), to how well an instrument has been made. He is so confident in what he does, he even invited me to watch him do the work on my daughter's violin. I was very impressed for my first visit with this establishment. In 2003 my husband and sons gave me a Gliga Gems II for Christmas. We took it to Lisle Violin Shop to be set up. When I brought it home and played it for the first time, it sounded horrible. The tone was very dull and the violin totally lacked resonance. In 15-20 minutes of playing time, it is already out of tune. I gave up on it. I've hardly touched it since. My husband took it to Mr. Gold at Gold Violin Shop last week. He brought it home two days ago, and to my enormous surprise, it plays like a dream. It now has a great sound. All I could say was "Wow!" Mr. Gold installed a new sound post, nut, button, Thomastik Infeld Red strings, and built a new bridge for it. What he did for this violin is truly amazing. I left a violin, case and bow to be sold on consignment 11 years ago. I received a check when the violin and case were sold 11 years ago and a note that the shop still had the bow. I completely forgot about this until I received a check today for the bow which was evidently recently sold. What an honest man! I had completely forgotten about this. WOW!! This man is GREAT!! We bought a used violin. At 1st we were all were very excited about this 47 yr old violin. We took it to a couple of place to get a few things done to it (pegs, bridge, sound post). It worked for a couple of months... then teacher started having all kinds of trouble with it.. the bridge, the strings, it not staying tuned...The poor teacher was frustrated...LOL The teacher told my daughter to get a new one it's a 3/4 and that she needed a 4/4. So we thought .. ok. I guess you grew pretty quick.. lets go get you a 4/4. We went on a hunt for it. We went to Gold's Violin Shop to buy a 4/4. He measure her.. said she doesnt need a 4/4 for about 6 months. I was thinking... What? I then passed him ours and said.. well then... can you do anything with this one. He looked at it and said a few things... I was expecting him to keep it for a while. We waited for a short while for him to finish with the other people that were in his ship.. Once that left.. he escorted my 2 daughters and I next door to his workshop. Thought he was going to look at it and tell us a few things that could be done to the violin. Instead we watched him for 2 -3 hours, working and rebuilding our 47 yr old violin, we also got to listen to some great music and the girls enjoyed so much watching and talking to Mr Gold while he took the strings off and sound post and we seen him cut and measure a new sound post, and cut and measure a new bridge and oh.. he did painted the scratches away and much much more. Now ...This violin is the best in class.. It's so loud and sounds beautiful.. The teachers and student enjoy the beautiful music that comes out of this violin that the teacher wanted to us to get rid of. We just bought a violin that was made in 1934. My daughter cleaned it up. It has no string, no bridge, no sound post, needs new pegs.. it needs alot of work... We are looking forward to taking it to Mr. Gold. I highly recommend him. My daughter now spends hours practicing violin, Mr Gold inspired my daughter to be better that before and she's doing it.. We not only got our violin fix.. We got a whole lot more!! He's Blessed us more than we ever imagined. read more
