This bank used to be good, but they have fallen. I had $307 dollars taken out of my bank account for a smoke shop. I have never walked into a smoke shop before. After they reviewed it, they said that the card I have in my hand was present at the smoke shop and so I owe the money. I have been with them for over 8 years with a balance over $10,000 at all times. If your card is ever stolen, don't expect to get your money back. read more

I have been a member for over 40 years. Back then, they were located in a gorgeous but very small Victorian house in downtown Davis, with a few millions in assets. Now, it is a power house worth billions of dollars. Yet, their customer service sucks. This week-end, they updated the app and the website. Major issues that one would think should never happened with such a big institution. You would think they would hire extra help to deal with all the calls. NOPE. Called 5 times, put on hold and wait time of over 45 minutes. Finally was able to get a call back. The lady wasn't based in India, but her diction and accent were so poor, I couldn't understand most of what she said. After 10 minutes, she said their system was down and she couldn't help me. She told me to keep calling all day. When I requested a call back, she transferred me to a supervisor. On hold for another 20 minutes. The supervisor was even worst than the person before, her poor diction and rudeness were appalling. Where does Golden 1 find these people? This Credit Union has gone down hill from 40 years ago. Their people make millions in salary (the upper management) but the services suck so bad, out of 4 people in my family, 3 have moved out and I am the only one left. Seems like bank staffing is always unprepared for customer influx and other staff is never redirected to assist, including managers never that seem annoyed when asked to assist. I have been with Golden 1 since I began work with the State of California in 1968 when union membership was required to belong. Golden 1 has only improved and greatly expanded since. I opened an account online as it was relatively easy. Took a paycheck in the branch in Carmichael and said I wanted to deposit it. I knew my account was new and though they would put a hold in it for 3 or 4 days and I was willing to do that. Well they wanted to put a hold on my check for 9 business days. With banks so interconnected a clearinghouse takes usually no more than 48 hours. Told the teller give me my check back and deposited at Bank of America where I have been since 1994. So my 5 dollars used to open the account will sit there for a couple of months since the excuse was it was a new account. Almost 2 weeks before I could access my funds. Not worth it, go to chase or us bank or Bank of America. Bullshit operation read more

Had an issue with fees again -- and this time, they were a lot less courteous in cutting me any slack. It may have been that we moved a large chunk of savings to a different bank, so perhaps they no longer saw me as a customer that was worthy of giving any sort of consideration? Point is, we had issues again with $26 fees for overdrafts because my wife accidentally used the incorrect card a few times. This time, the surly fellow who helped me informed me it was there policy to never reverse charges. He then went to speak to his manager -- and several minutes later returned and said they'd reverse half of them. As he did so, he informed me they were making a note on the account to never reverse charges again. I felt the love. :/ I'm giving SAFE Credit Union a try now. Fingers crossed. read more

I heard this credit union was good, like others I used in the past in other places I've lived, and I really really really wanted it to work out. The staff at this credit union are superb, friendly, and really great. Unfortunately, the staff at this credit union have no control over the things that really matter for your personal banking. Because they are small, they contract out all their fundamental services (ATM, credit and debit cards, etc.) to big monolithic horrible service providers. When the contracted service provider screws you around, the credit union employees are powerless to help you. We just closed our account. The service provider for the credit/debit cards was so paranoid they were constantly canceling our card because they "suspected" fraud was occurring. This continually put us in dangerous situations, when we believed we could pay with our card but it was declined. The employees at the credit union did everything they could to help us, but in the end they were thwarted by the card service providers, who refused to stop canceling the card. If you open an account here, beware that the balance is never up-to-date. Sometimes it takes a whole week before their computers register the activity. If you rely on the banks electronic ledgers, like I do, to keep track of your balance, you will very likely have an overdraft. And then even if you catch it before the overdraft occurs they will refuse to recognize your deposit for days, even when it is proven that they had the funds in the account the entire time. They broke my trust. I was about to set up direct deposit, but after they told me to read "page 27" of the fine print, I decided to instead cash my paycheck instead of trusting them with my money. Stay away from Golden One Credit Union if you want decent reliable trustworthy service. This is a shoe string operation. UPDATE: I opened an account at BayFed Credit Union in Santa Cruz after moving. Golden 1 had destroyed my trust in credit unions, but BayFed restored my trust once again. BayFed is an incredible credit union, my ledger is fast and up-to-date (even seconds after a transaction occurs!), the staff are friendly, and they offer all kinds of services. Even better, they never cancel my card when I'm traveling, so I no longer feel like I'm at risk of being arrested for defrauding an innkeeper or similar when carrying their plastic! STAY AWAY FROM GOLDEN ONE! CREDIT UNIONS CAN REALLY BE MUCH MUCH BETTER!!! read more

Every single time that I visit this location they have a super long line, in addition to that for the whole day they only have 1 or at times 2 and 4 other customers are waiting for more than 20-30 mins in the lobby. The bankers are extremely slow and their privacy is not all that I was sitting in the lobby and I could hear the girl talking about an IRA and some sort of CD that she was promoting to her customer and confirming his address I mean I heard everything and I'm sure other people heard it too. It's pretty frustrating for those of us essential workers that work a normal business day in normal business hours because the Golden 1 credit Union, and all of the other Banks, are closing at 4 pm... How does that facilitate the person that has to work a normal day? It makes more sense to start a little later in the morning and stay open until 5:30 like as they did prior to this covid-19 outbreak. I must say is just terribly poor scheduling and it's extremely inconvenient... The people that have access to the bank during the hours that they're open are the people that don't work during the week or have a day off during the week, of which I am neither... I do understand being open less hours but for heaven's sake couldn't there have been a little bit of better planning and some thoughtfulness when looking at which hours would be nipped off of the work day for the bank? It's just very frustrating and very inconvenient, those of us that are sticking our necks out and putting our lives on the line to make sure that the whole country runs smoothly during this troubling time are not being accommodated and I just think that's terribly inconsiderate, short-sighted and frankly is dismissive of our efforts and it makes an already stressful situation that much more stressful... at the end of the day, after all of the contact with other people and the worry and the stresses concerned with that, the things that we need to get done are not getting done but the next person who doesn't work, or doesn't need to work, has an abundance of accommodation. Went there to apply for a secured card and was helped by Dalibor. After applying for the card I was told I would have to wait an hour to find out if I was approved for a secured Card that was getting funded 100% by my $, seemed odd. He said I could wait but seriously wait an hour in a bank for a secured card with my family give me a break. So I told him I would grab some lunch and he said he would call me in about an hour. After 4 hours I got annoyed and called the 1800 # and was transferred to the branch. A nice lady answered the phone and I went through everything again and I was told that it was odd that they had to review a secured card but that it had been approved and transferred me back to the gentleman that originally helped me. He then told me the same thing the last person told me and said I just need to come back in to find the account which is ridiculous, I bank there I have an account with the $ in it so I told him to take it from there. I then asked him if I was ever going to be called and I was told that the people in the branch were more important. Now I was one of those people and I wasn't made to feel important at all and I still don't. The way I was treated makes me want to go get a safe or schools account. read more

I really wish I had paid closer attention to these reviews before I opened and acct. at G1 but I didn't and now have my own horror story to add to the others. Not only do deposits take too long to clear and they are vicious with the fees, their customer service is atrocious! I have a nickname/ Alias similar to Richard/Rick, William/Bill, Catherine/Kate. My full name is on the acct., my shortened name is on all my deposits from work. I've been with G1 for two years, they've happily accepted my deposits with the shortened name this whole time, until the last time I went in- suddenly they wouldn't accept a deposit with the same name they've accepted since I opened the acct.!? I showed them other I.D. with that name, no good, reminded them my deposits have always been under this name, no good. So, I said, if they could no longer accept my deposits, I'd have to close my acct. They said OK, but the guy left $1 in the acct., NOT closing it, just incurring service fees, which they now won't waive. When I refused to pay service fees on what was supposed to be a closed acct., I was told this would go to collections and on my credit report!! I have to say I do agree with some of what was said in the last review. After banking with major corporate banks....Wells Fargo, Bank of America, I chose Golden 1 Credit Union in the spirit of supporting local businesses. As a consumer I do try to shop locally and support the local economy, I go to a midtown branch and the employees all know me by name. They are always friendly and approachable. It's convienient because the ATM is in the neighborhood (although they can't be found on every street corner----at times a major inconvienience) and they close at 4p.m. which totally conflicts with my schedule. SO, if I have to go into the bank it requires me to plan around it. My major frustration with Golden 1 is like the above review said. TRANSACTIONS TAKE UP TO A WEEK TO CLEAR!! I recently had to pay $111.00 for in overdraft fees for being overdrawn $9.00 in my checking account. I was so frustrated because I had checked my atm available balance, checked my on-line banking and even double checked my ATM available balance before using my checking card. (Something was telling me, it keeps showing up that I have more money than I should.) The positive of Bank of America was that the one time I went into overdraft in the multiple years I banked with them was that they waived the fees because it was a first time occurence. It was carelessness on my part but I appreciated thier favor. SO, bottom line when this happened I went into my usual branch and asked if there was anyway they would be willing to waive the fees which they would not and were pretty cut throat about it....not the usual friendly tellers that day. They said because it wasn't a bank error I was out of luck and would have to pay. They handed me a checking book and said keep better track next time. So lesson learned, do not rely on thier statements!!! Keep your records. Now, I make it a habit to simply deal with cash and leave the debit card at home. Budget how mch money I will need for the week, withdraw it and not deal with the drama. Tends to work out for the best and helps me to save money. Call me old fashioned but seeing cash (or lack of) in hand really helps me to yeild from splurges or impulse buys. All in all, I am still a customer but would strongly advise you to keep accurate records of your account to cover your own behind! read more

I opened my account at the Meadowview branch near Fanklin in 2006. I have visited branches in Rancho, Downtown, on Broadway and even a small office in L.A. And I agree that the staff are always friendly and superb at what they do. But no, they have no control over the things that really matter for your personal banking. Still I do prefer and appreciate them, even if they are unable to open more facilities in Mendocino Country area, where I hope to relocate someday. read more

I opened an account here back in September of 2017 when I was a student. They put a $250 daily spending limit on my account which at the time seemed reasonable. But a month later I joined the Army and in the middle of basic training we got "victory block leave" for Christmas. We went with the platoon to buy plane tickets and to my surprise my card got declined. I ended up calling golden1 and they told me there was nothing they could do but after about being on the phone with them for like 30 minutes they made an exception. Earlier this year when I PCSed to Fort Lewis I tried buying my ticket from Georgia to fly to California on leave and it got declined again. So I called golden1 except this time they absolutely could not make the exception. I ended up having my sister buy the $300 ticket and I played her back through cash app. Overall it's a pretty garbage CU and they offer nothing to service members. Well, maybe I just got the wrong kind of account? Nope, when I was opening mine as a student, I asked if they offered an account to service members and they said they do not, oddly enough. For 20 years, Golden 1 has never ceased to have the worst customer service of all the banks (and I have had B of A, Chase, Wells Fargo, etc. as secondary accounts); their staff are lazy, rude, ignorant, and my password is I HATE GOLDEN 1 if that gives you a clue. My name is Stella Gwynn Murphy. I have been banking with Golden One Credit Union for almost 20 years. Golden One has always exceeded my expectations and helped me as a customer. Recently, I had a very negative experience with your company. I went into Golden One Credit Union in April 2016 because I was interested in buying a home. I spoke to Mr. English at the Carmichael branch. Mr. English referred me to a loan officer that pre approved me for a home loan of up to $190,000. The loan officer asked if I had looked at my credit report recently. I expressed that I had not looked at my report since buying a car in 2014 but that my credit had been fine then. The loan officer recommended that I print out my report but did not tell me why. When I got home I printed my report and realized that Golden One had mistakenly listed me as deceased on two accounts. I went back to the bank to talk to Mr. English stating that "there are two Golden One accounts that are stating me as deceased." Mr. English talked to his manager and the manager Laurie expressed that I needed to "write a letter to the Golden One Credit department explaining that I had been listed as deceased on two accounts with Experian but was not actually deceased." She also stated that I would need to send them a copy of my Driver's License and a current utility bill in my name. I was able to go into the branch the next day and Mr. English faxed these documents over to the Credit Department. At this time Mr. English expressed that I was good to go and the process to clear up the credit issue should only take about 2 weeks to be resolved. He advised me to look at houses and continue with the buying process because I was approved. At this point I found a real estate agent and gave her my approval letter. We found the perfect townhome in my price range. It was exactly what I was looking for and we put in an offer. At this point I started sending my required documents to the loan officer. The loan went to its second phase and I was approved. I continued with my loan process. I paid the deposit to the title company, the appraisal, and the home inspection. After paying for these things the bank requested that I pay the down payment. I pulled this money from my retirement account per the banks instructions. When I pulled the money out, the underwriter denied the loan in this third phase due to me still being listed as deceased on two accounts as reported by Experian. I was very upset by this and ended up losing out on the home. I lost money from the home inspection and from paying penalties and taxes on the money for the down payment that the bank told me to pull out from my retirement account. I feel mad and betrayed by the bank. This frustrating situation has caused me a lot of heartache due to the stress and anxiety it has given me. I found myself crying in anguish at work and unable to preform my duties. I hope that Golden One will read this and change the way they operate. I don't want anyone else to go through what I went through. I also feel I should be compensated for my monetary loss. If this does not happen, I plan on contacting a lawyer and local news stations. The worse part of this situation was that before I was denied for this loan I was so excited and full anticipation. I had begun getting boxes and going through things to prepare for my big move. We've been with the Golden 1 Credit Union for over 20 years and have always had good experiences with them. We started using the one located on Manzanita in Carmichael about 2 years ago because it is very close to work and the tellers in this location are always very friendly and helpful. Recently we had some issues with an account we've had for a long time, but never used. We started using the account and ran into some problems. We had to go into the bank several times to fix the problem, but every time we went the tellers were really helpful. They were patient and answered all of our questions and together we figured everything out. We've used other banks in the past, but after being with the Golden 1 we'd definitely never go back. 5 stars for sure to the crew at this location! read more

My wife and I went to this Golden1 branch to get a preapproved auto loan. We were assisted by Amy C who was extremely helpful, efficient and explained in detail everything we needed to know and do. She processed our preapproved auto loan and also offered additional service which we accepted. At this time I would have given Amy 5 stars. We purchased a car and there was an issue with the dealership on the loan which was given to the auto maker instead of Golden1. We returned to Golden1 and explained the situation to Amy. With her assistance, we were able to have the auto loan financed through Golden1 at terms better than originally approved. Thank you, Amy for going above and beyond helping us to resolve our issue. I've been a member of Golden1 for over 20 years and have been very happy with the services and enhancements like online bill paying. Being a credit union, I can deposit at any other credit union on the same network as Golden1 and withdraw cash at any other credit union without fees. read more
