I try to avoid the weekends. I generally come for a weekday dim sum or dinner, it is usually a reasonable waiting time if busy. They are more equipped to handle smaller crowds as quality drops even if it is just a little busy. The servers are not proactive, have to ask for utensils, napkins, tea refills even on a weekday night with a few tables seated. Their dim sum includes all your tasty classics. Im always up for new foods but admit I am a noob when it comes to this type of food. I wanted something simple so I go on ubereats to try and find some bbq meats over rice with a place that had some decent reviews and here we are. The food arrived quick but was disappointing. Im not sure if this is because I'm not one of their people but the meat in the dish had all bones and was nearly inedible. I went with 3 meats. Chicken, duck, and pork over rice. I came for dimsum with my parents on a Sunday afternoon, and this place was packed! Amidst the organized chaos, grab a ticket and wait patiently for your ticket to be called. The numbers go by quickly, as Golden Bay is one of the restaurants that utilizes split table dining. The dimsum here is really solid, and probably one of the better ones in Brooklyn. Again, when you see older adults here with their families, you know it's good food. The cheung fun here had a really nice chew to it, and I enjoyed both the beef and shrimp rice rolls. The nice thing is, when the dimsum ladies here promote something as being fresh out of the kitchen, it really is! Everything we ordered was pretty tasty, including the chow mein. Service is attentive, and our tea pot was never left empty for long. Ambiance is typical of a dimsum restaurant, but Golden Bay is not as modern as Golden Palace or East Harbor. Best time to come for lunch on the weekends if you're not doing dimsum is around 1:30PM. Noticeably quieter and you won't be waiting long for seats! Service was really nice and helpful. There are a lot of things not on their printed menu that you can ask the waiters about and they'll give you recommendations if they don't have certain things too. Most importantly, the prices are soo sooo reasonable for the dishes they served. We wanted the garlic scallops vermicelli but they said they didn't have that, and recommended us these giant oysters instead. They were freaking ginormous!! The length of my hands/face. Worth every penny for sure. They are under seasoned though so you should ask for some soy sauce or grab some sauce from another entree dish. But very plumb and fresh. Literally every table around us was eying our oysters, oohing and salivating haha. Sliced Conch with Tofu: fried beautiful, not too salty, seasoned well. Loved the juicy scallops with this dish as well Tai Shan Cauliflower with Preserved Meat: the preserved meat is super fatty in this dish but flavor is very good. Oily though, be warned! It quickly filled up around 7, so it was nice to see the restaurant wasn't completely dead. The decorations and vibe of the restaurant is very typical Chinese restaurant. Very mid dim sum. My group and I trickled in pairs at around 1PM on a weekend, and it was funny the workers automatically knew to associate us together. The tea was the most disappointing. If you're going to a yum cha at a dim sum restaurant, the least they can do is make tea that isn't too concentrated or dark. Our tea was very dark and heavily bitter. The workers here were the most persistent I've seen so far in selling to us the food in their carts. Being it was always the same lady lol. But her service was appreciated, as she was able to find for us every dish we requested. I only remember the Chicken Feet having the most flavor. A good majority felt like it was lacking something. My favorite dish like the Bean Curd Roll tasted off, with not enough sauce. The Steamed Malay Sponge Cake was not as creamy, custardy, or soft. The Albert Yip pieces were way too huge, that it made them tough to chew. I'm not sure I would call the Mexico Bun a bun. On the top, the appearance, texture, and taste was delicious. But what happened on the bottom? There was like no breading at all, with only the thinnest piece of flour to support the mountainous top part. The appearance of the dim sum also wasn't there. A lot of the baked fried foods that you can already see from the carts looked very dry and doughy, that I can understand why the cart ladies were trying so hard to market them to people. I joked with hubby that could be us in many many years.... retired and meeting up with friends or family around the table chatting & eating dim sum. Looking around the room to loud chatters, clinking of glasses, and happy faces made us smile. BUT.... the cart ladies ignored us after only 2 carts showed us their wares. The rest just kept skipping us which left us confused and hungry. One of the server saw us kept looking at the ladies behind me so he came to help. He said we could just flag any servers down and place an order. We then told him what we wanted and within 15minutes we had a few dishes at our table. During that waiting time. The ladies still ignored us or kept passing by us or perhaps kept getting distracted by other tables and just simply never made it to our table. We weren't in a corner but in the middle back of the restaurant. The table on our right received service but not us. Bensonhurst LOVES their dim sum. All the table clothed, dragon embossed establishments replete with pushcarts containing what are essentially asian tapas are perpetually packed on the weekends. You can even see a crowd forming before this restaurant even opens at 8:30am. Whose eating dim sum at 8:30am you ask? Loads of people, and this is kind of a good move. If you get here anytime past 10am you can expect to wait a while for a table. The ownership and name of this restaurant has changed several times in the last decade, but it's always essentially the same classic Cantonese restaurant. With this iteration of the restaurant the interior feels bright, clean and modern, with really pretty lavender table cloths and seat covers. All the food was consistently hot, which you can expect at a busy dim sum restaurant since the dishes are turning over quicker, but the quality of the ingredients and the flavors weren't high. Classics like har gow, shrimp in rice noodles, and siu mai were just a tad overcooked. Pastries like the pineapple bun and egg tart were pretty fresh though. Sometimes servers will try to force you to take a dish you don't want, which happened to us here. We went back and forth where we told our server we didn't want a dish she placed on our table, and her insisting we take it because "it tastes good." It's hard to say which dim sum restaurants are the most popular in Bensonhurst because it seems like every single one is packed beyond capacity all of the time, but Golden Bay is definitely on that list. My family came here for dim sum on Mother's Day at around 11:30am for a table of 8 and we didn't get seated until about 12:30pm. OK, so 1 hour doesn't seem that bad, but when you're standing amongst 50 other people in a cramped space it can feel like 5 hours. The restaurant isn't that big either, so it doesn't help with the crowd control. Anyhow, straight to the point, the dim sum dishes were decent here. The selection wasn't the greatest, but it wasn't the worst I've seen. All of the typical dishes you'd find were all here (ex: shrimp dumplings, rice rolls, shui mai, etc.) We also ordered a shredded chicken pan fried noodle and that just didn't pan out. The sauce was bland and the noodle got too soft too quickly. I will give them credit to them for giving us a big order of noodles though, but if it doesn't taste good then what's the point? Besides the food, we did have a complaint about the service. Although we were a table of 8, they kept insisting on trying to squeeze in 2 more random strangers onto our table. We were basically at capacity at our table, but with the large crowd waiting for seats, they just insisted on placing 2 more people, so we had to fight them on that. If you don't have a large party, you'll definitely have to share a table with strangers, but even if you do have a large party it's no guarantee the table belongs entirely to you, so beware of that. Normally I don't like to order fried stuff to go, cuz by the time bring it home, it will be soggy. Surprisingly, Pork chop and both fried fish is still pretty crispy. If there was a way I could give negative ratings, rest assured Golden Bay would receive an even more dismal rating. This was not a first time visit; I frequent this dim sum joint almost every other week. However, this was the first time I have ever encountered such horrific and awful service that has changed and cemented my opinion of this place. I decided to come early to avoid the brunch crowd and was able to snag a table for two quickly. However, I noticed that the lady in the suit did not bother changing tablecloths, so I politely requested that she do so. She came back with a cloth napkin and carelessly laid it over the stained tablecloth and left. I asked again and she told me that they were out of tablecloths. Despite this flimsy lie, (seriously you've only been open for two hours and you're conveniently out of tablecloths?) I asked if she could kindly bring us an extra cloth napkin so she could cover the other stain that the first napkin could not. She looked at me blankly and reminded me that I came with a party of two and then walked away. Did this mean my table wasn't enough of a priority for her to provide a decent, clean table for us to eat at because we had only two people in our party? As if that weren't infuriating enough, the two tables near us received new tablecloths for the next patrons and the lady in the suit changed them without a second pause. Neither parties were subject to such rude and disrespectful behavior that we were subjected to. How does Golden Bay force people to eat off dirty tablecloths and still retain an A rating by the Health Department? How do you justify ignoring the requests of a party of two but then change tablecloths for a party of three? Golden Bay, you engage in disgusting and despicable practices. RIP Golden Bay. The OLD you. The you that, for the last three years, reliably cooked delicious Cantonese foods, and became a regular place for family dinners. By the standards of Brooklyn, you were very good and came to mind faster than many other restaurants when someone asked for a recommendation. Alas, it's been half a year and I failed to do due diligence. You see, I didn't know an imposter hijacked your name and good reputation. Unwittingly, I find out as one dish after another paraded out, unforgettable at best, unappetizing at worst, and priced at least 25% higher than previously. And yet, if only that was all I had to look back on! Hell-bent on creating an exquisitely tortuous experience was our arrogant, presumptuous waiter, his disdain barely disguised, his every recommendation falling flat, and his most aggressive upsell the worst dish of all: a sticky, cloyingly sweet, soggy mess masquerading as eggplant and egg tofu. Unwanted, he haunted the table, relentlessly reminding us how good his recommendations were, yet nowhere near for timely plate changes, beverage refills, or even the check. After an attempt to grandly pass off humble snow fungus as bird's nest in our sweet soup netted him a not-so-gentle take-down from my mother, he (perhaps) sensed discontent and brought a second round of complimentary dessert, then promptly spoiled this small act of conciliation by arguing that we must take the unfinished portion home or it will reflect badly on him. So here we are, my dear departed Golden Bay. Those chefs and staff who made you good have moved on to greener pastures, and I'll have word-of-mouth take me there. For everyone else, be warned, only a cheap copy remains here, with at least one waiter eager to orchestrate a dinner from hell for you. Chefs for dim sum are often different from those for other food preparation, so I have nothing to say about the current state of dim sum (previously excellent), but I won't be back to find out. read more

3.5 stars. Hooray for a new dimsum restaurant that is 5 mins. walking distance from my house! I came here with my parents to yumcha at around 10am and there was no wait at all. The interior is pretty spacious and everything seemed pretty clean. The ladies that push the carts also wear masks to prevent spreading germs into the food so that's definitely a big plus. I liked the seating arrangements! Normally at dimsum restaurants, they usually only have large round tables so if you come in a small group, you have to sit with strangers. However, here they offer small tables as well so our party of 3 was able to sit together at our own table. I would say the dimsum here is pretty alright. I thought the siumai was mouthwatering and delicious but my mom disagreed and said that she likes the ones at Joy Luck more. All of the other dimsum that we tried were pretty standard and not excessively salty, which was a plus. I despised the tripe though because it was flavorless, rough, and too chewy. [that's my favorite] It seemed to be pretty popular as I had to ask the pushing cart ladies more than 5 times if they got it. - Shrimp Rice Noodle - Pretty decent THE OKAY: - Piggies Bao - The pigs caught my interest that I just had to try one. It was just Nai Wong Bao - the ones with yellow egg custard in the middle. Appearance was its cute and unique as other restaurants don't make it like that. Taste-wise it was Ok. I had better ones that are piping hot and the yellow egg custard comes oozing out. - Chicken Feet - they have peanuts on the bottom - so anyone with peanut allergy beware. Typically this dim sum does not contain peanuts but with black beans instead. It was pretty good. It was very saucy on the bottom. On the top the chicken feet weren't marinated as well. However I had better chicken feet in Chinatown. - Fried dough with Rice Noodle wrapped around - Here, they make it with cilantro and I don't really like cilantro. Another problem I had with this was that the fried dough was kind of chewy - like not fresh. It's supposed to be crispy and crunchy. - Fried Tofu Wrap around Shrimp - Ehhh it was Ok. I don't really like this in general but we ordered it because my friend wanted to try. CONS: - long wait lines for dim sum. Waited approx 30min to get a seat for 2 people. - Fried Turnip/Radish (Law Bak Go) - Taste was flat. It was kind of hard and it was not fried well. These are small dishes that you share family style. It's a great way to try something new. My favorite dish is the spring rolls. I know "say what!" I have a shellfish allergy hence I am glad this place has spring rolls without shrimps. Also, I love that this place has crunchy spring rolls. If they sit too long, they are soggy. But sometimes when it's rush hour like during the morning , the staff would seat you with other people who are using the same table if you wouldn't mind.The staff are nice and friendly. My friend and I got some chicken feet, shrimp and beef rice rolls/or noodles, egg custard, shrimp shuimai, beef ball, and last but not less was the piggy buns. I've been to a bunch of Chinese restaurants in Bensonhurst and while all of them have been great, Golden Bay has a few standout dishes that make me salivate at the thought of returning. My family and I were able to make a reservation for a party of 9 to celebrate my sister's birthday. They graciously allowed us to cut the cake there without any additional fees. Ambiance wise, Golden Bay has the traditional appearance of any Chinese restaurant that hosts banquets or parties. It's one large, open room with countless tables scattered throughout. Everything looks clean and new. Chinese food is best enjoyed family style, so we ordered 7 dishes to share. The food took awhile to come, but once it came, we dug in with gusto. Here are the dishes that won us over: -String Beans with Pork: Deliciously sauteed, soft, fat string beans with ground pork. -Sweet and Sour Chicken: All the kids love this! The chicken was crispy and not too sour. -Asian Cauliflower with BBQ Pork: I liked this but it was a little too salty. -Crispy Pan Fried Noodle: Amazing! You've got the crispy bits of the noodles, some glaze sauce that drapes over parts of the dish to soften some of the noodles, and Gailan w/ bean sprouts, carrots, and pork. -Crispy Garlic Baked Chicken: Rather bland and underwhelming. I would skip this one. -Pan Fried Whole Flounder: A must try! The whole fish is fried until it's so crispy, you can hear the crunch across the table in between bits. They use seafood sauce sauce to season it, and the savory flavor is unbelievable. I loved eating the crispy skin, and crunching through to the juicy meat of the fish. It's topped with a big pile of cooked green onion. -Lobster Crispy Fried Rice: Delicious! They use a mixture of glutinous and white rice and I think they fry both. The clumps of crispy rice with scallion cling to the pieces of sauteed lobster. There was more than enough lobster in this dish and all of us found ourselves wishing there was more rice, because it was that good. They also offer complimentary dessert: orange slices, red bean sweet soup with peanuts, and a platter of malai cake with sesame and salted egg yolk custard buns. One of the better dim sum places in New York (imo Brooklyn has the best dim sum). It's loud, it's crowded, and the dim sum ladies are rude and aggressive but that's how you know it's a legit dim sum experience. I've noticed that there's less of a wait if you go around 1ish, and don't worry because fresh food is being steamed constantly. You have to be aggressive when getting seats as well as ordering, so this is not for the weak! They have all the classic dim sums that you would want, as well as some unique ones. I believe this is one of the first places to make the steamed custard buns with the pig faces. After everyone saw these, all the places in flushing and chinatown started copying them. Also, they have something cool here called "wong gum go", which is a golden-colored cube that that looks like honey comb. I really like the taste and the texture of this, and I haven't seen this in any other dim sum place. I usually go for the "ha chern" (steamed rice noodles with shrimp), "pai gwut" (steamed pork ribs with pumpkin), "Lang yer kuw" (steamed fish paste), "nuw pai yeep" (beef tripe), and the "fong jiao" (steamed red chicken feet". The prices here are Brooklyn prices meaning it's cheaper than Manhattan and Flushing, but the taste is definitely superior! read more

we came here for dinner.. celerbrate my aunt birthday.. she came all the way out from another city.. we had 11 people.. some of these dishes are good.. it can be noise from other tables.. was here about 2 hrs maybe? we had a birthday cake.. not sure how much is the bill cost.. we had desert not sure what is it..but pretty good. the waiter always come to my side to put the dishes on my table.. he was close to me? not sure why? i take a leak 3 times. bathroom was dirty. no 1 flush the toilet. Sit here for 2 long hours. There a.c is to cold. Wear just a t shirt.. i hate coming down here to eat in this area.. to far from where i live.. always hard finding parking.. i gave my phone to the bald male waiter with glasses. he cant take pics.. he didnt zoom in.. u know chinese families like to take pics end of the our dinner. read more

I enjoyed the dim sum! I was hesitant at first because I thought the ladies who pushed the dim sum carts were a bit rude. They kept telling my mom who was holding her baby in a baby seat to move, along with her friend and me to move aside.. while we were waiting to go to our seats when the table was already ready for us. They were in our way to sit for a good 5 minutes.. If we had just sit, they would have had the room to move and serve other people. Also, I hope they would work on sitting people. The man who gave the customers a number for sitting should have properly sat the customers. I heard him just tell customers to go themselves to the table he gives them. Other than that, the food was good. Good proportion and presentation. I'd come back with family and friends! Just hope I would get a better sitting experience! read more

Started with a long wait for food during dinner service but food came almost all at once.A waitor asked us if they should put in our order when we already said yes. One or two dirty cups. They didn't ask if we wanted rice, need to request rice twice. Cleaned up pretty fast. The food was really good. Tasty fish soup, a little to the salty side. Roasted pork appetizer is mouth watering, sweet salty juicy. Tender lamb chops and fall apart braised ox tail with lotus root are delicious. Veggies are a little bit tough but the flavor is well balanced. They also gave us complimentary steamed cake for my dad's birthday Would definitely come back for dinner, I hope they'll have better service next time. read more

This place was packed around 10 am, must be a good sign right? Not necessarily, but this time it was. The staff from the hostess, to the server to the cashier were all friendly, even though i am not Asian. Ordering for non Asians might not be that challenging since they bring the cart of food around and show you what they have. You pick what you want, simple. The decor was fine, typical Chinese design with plenty of light, very up to date, plenty of seating and even tyne bathroom was clean. Ohhh, did i forget to mention the food? Well i can't speak for anything else but the dim sum, which was very good. Better then most places in this area. From the shrimp balls,fish balls, chicken feet, dumplings to the deserts, everything was just tasty and flavorful. I definitely would come back to try the other food. Only negative is there is only street parking and when they punch your bill, its in Chinese, so if you can't read it, it's possible they are or could be overcharging you.(Not saying they are, but just be aware) read more

Came in here for some dim sum for lunch, with some colleagues. Place was pretty full with 100% Chinese customers, always a good sign. The dining room is authentic Chinese traditional, bright and clean. Standard Dim Sum available, everything was on point, they had all the selections I was looking for. Service was friendly and efficient. Shared tables, as to be expected. We did not order a main dish, but they had plenty to offer. They also have fish tanks with a very interesting and exotic selection including a gigantic King Crab which ranges from 7 to 10 pounds, at $35 a pound. You can see the photo here.
