Now THIS was a burger!…read more I love a good burger, and for me, it's all about balance. I don't mind a big, messy burger. In fact, I like when the mayo, ketchup, and sauces start mixing together and dripping a little. That's part of the experience! But what I cannot stand is a burger so overloaded with sauce that you can't even taste the meat. This burger got it right. I ordered the one with the cheese skirt, and that alone was worth the trip. They pile cheese around the burger on the grill, cover it, and let that cheese melt and grill into this crispy skirt around the burger. The cheese wasn't just cheesy either. It had a slight salty, seasoned flavor that made it pop. The crispy edges were basically an extra reward for clogging your arteries. And then there were the fries! They weren't advertised as seasoned fries, but there was definitely something going on besides potatoes and salt. Maybe it was the oil. Maybe they season them before frying. I don't know. What I do know is dem' joints was GOOD! The atmosphere added to the experience. It had the feel of a family-owned spot. I came in shortly after 1:00, so I may have missed the lunch rush. The young man who took my order was courteous, and everyone seemed comfortable and friendly. It even looked like some friends had stopped by to bring the owner a special dessert. It felt less like a corporate restaurant and more like a neighborhood spot where people actually know each other. Great burger. Great fries. Friendly people. Good atmosphere. It's still the same building at the corner of Waterloo and N. Filbert st. and they have their own parking, which makes it easy to stop in. The chalkboard menu has been replaced with a digital menu, but all the old favorites are still available. Really, not much else has changed. They offer all day breakfast sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, additional sandwiches and some delicious fried options including multiple options of fries. They're also known for their milkshakes. The team here greeted us right away and gave us time to look over the menu and snap some photos before we placed our order. On this visit we ordered a small Rocky Road milkshake ($7.75) and a small is still a generous sized milkshake. I split it with my friend and it was plenty for both of us. One thing that makes their shakes special is that they blend them into a thick shake, but add an extra scoop of ice cream on top. This way it's nice and cold and you can scoop it or let it melt as you drink from the bottom of the shake and the thick consistency lasts longer. Stopping in reminded me why we love this spot and that I need to visit more often- especially for a full meal so I can enjoy their burgers again.
