We went here for early dinner. Seated immediately in a beautifully decorated room with nice music. It's a buffet style restaurant. We found the food excellent, fresh and hot. Very good variety of chicken, pork beef, seafood. I really liked their home made fried rice which had shrimp in it. My wife said it was the best Chinese food she ever had. I had five kinds of chicken and it was melt in your mouth delicious. We've decided every time we are in Harrisonburg this will be our favorite. This Chinese buffets hits all the spots: plenty seating, great array of food options from greasy and crunchy fried ones to sautéed and fresh options, and quick prompt service. Price was right too....they even had a fresh rolled sushi station! Good ingredients used too, nice servings of avocado and cream cheese with an array of fresh fish. Plenty of classics like general tso chicken, sesame chicken, beef and broccoli, wonton soup, egg drop soup, springrolls, eggrolls, lo mein....This spot had been serving the valley for 52 years!! Everytime my family and ibare in the area we visit the Golden China restaurant. The staff and service are great, we've never encountered any issues. This time the food was cold the lo mein tasted of dish water, the general tso tasted like it was lef5 over from the lunch buffet, and the fried rice was hard. I hear three days ago at lunch. I got there at 11:15 90% of the things I put on my plate from the buffet was cold chicken and broccoli. The broccoli was cold like it was just taken out of the refrigerator. The rice fried rice was cold. Chicken sticks were cold eggrolls were cold. Our annual Christmas Eve tradition at this familiar Chinese spot, took an unexpected turn this year, leaving us with mixed feelings about our beloved holiday tradition. To start, the billing process threw us for a loop. Somehow, my 2-year-old nephew ended up being charged for the buffet, and to our surprise, my 11-year-old nephew was treated as an adult(he only ate one plate btw). It was an unwelcome departure from the usual seamless experience that has kept us coming back year after year. As if that weren't enough, the state of the bathrooms was disappointing, with filth and a clogged toilet turning a simple visit into an uncomfortable ordeal. Not exactly the festive atmosphere we were hoping for. To cap it off, our waitress, usually a beacon of warmth, seemed unusually rushed. The pressure to vacate our table was evident, and our drinks went unattended, adding an unfortunate layer to the overall experience. In the end, our tip, typically a reflection of the fantastic service and memorable moments, was far from generous this time. Despite the disappointments, the allure of the restaurant's flavors, the nostalgia, and aesthetic we associate with it might not be enough to attract us back next Christmas. A good selection for a Chinese buffet, this place has one long steam table with arrows on the floor to try sending people in one direction down each side. That didn't seem to be working too well, but at least they tried. Masks required but not enforced. They also had plastic one-time gloves and while the waitress did hand me one when I started, they didn't seem to be helping others at the buffet while I got my food. Again, at least they tried. The food itself was fresh and still quite hot. Plenty of it with the usual Americanized options. Battered and fried, sweet sauces, but here and there were some that could be done as nearly all protein. Other than the inconsistent PPE enforcement, service was good. The sushi was the best sushi I have ever had on a buffet bar- basic options, nothing fancy but good enough to go for seconds. The restaurant was very clean and even has arrows in an attempt to direct people one way around the buffet. I can see how it could be frustrating to eat during peak times (if crowded), so I would recommend visiting early or later. Our fave dishes were the coconut shrimp, crab rangoon and beef and broccoli. Have very low expectations. Not the worst food, but I left 20 minutes into my meal because the food wasn't enjoyable. It was the first time I didn't tip, ever because I have no plans on returning. A brief description of my meal: It is buffet style, so you pick and choose what you want. They have strict COVID guidelines that I will applaud them for. Egg rolls were incredibly soft and doughy instead of crispy. Chicken was chewy and bland despite being doused in sauce. I've often visited his establishment when in the area. Tonight for the first time I was highly disappointed. The food on the bar was warm at best. Spoke to the management and they offered to get me something hot but that doesn't solve the underlying problem. They tried to tell me that the lack of hot food condition was being created by air-conditioning. That just isn't true. At one point I went to the bar and picked up two pieces of sweet-and-sour chicken. The manager asked me if it was hot. I told her to pick the second went up all for my flight, and she could see that it was lukewarm at best. I like that I can order house duck sauce so that I don't have to use the nasty duck sauce that comes in packets that NEVER tastes good. Takeout is ready in a flash and the workers I have dealt with are pleasant. What keeps it from being a five star? Some of the sauces--such as on the boneless spareribs can be a little too sweet. And I do wish they had fried wonton skins for the soup rather than fried noodles. Honestly, if yelp allowed, I would give this place 4 and 1/2 stars because these are minor issues. When we pulled in to the parking lot and saw the place was packed, we were encouraged. Upon entry, we were stunned by the massive buffet. More than that, it looked good and fresh. We came on Christmas Eve day and the place was packed with locals (mostly) and travelers enjoying a festive meal. The buffet had all of the usual dishes as well as an assortment of sushi. I am usually a little leery of sushi from a buffet and so I only tried a couple of pieces. What impressed me the most was the egg rolls. So often Chinese places have either greasy or soggy egg rolls. These were crispy, fresh, and tasty. There was also a wide assortment of fried shrimp and chicken --even more to love! For two of us, with hot tea, and a big tip for Christmas it was in the $20-$30 range. Not bad for the abundance, diversity, and quality of food available. I am one of those picky eaters who always finds the bone, grizzle, or foreign object in my food, and when this happens I am done eating. Yes, this has ruined many a meal. This was NOT the case at Golden China...all good, high quality chicken! My family has been going here for the past few years and the food is constantly good. This restaurant isn't too shabby. I first came here in 2014 and it was mediocre, so I hadn't been back until now, 2019. There have been some big improvements. The staff is friendly. The food at lunch time seems fresh. I had chicken and broccoli, which had a good flavor. The egg rolls were good, which us hard to find. The noodles were actually a good flavor as well, which isnt common around Harrisonburg. The chicken teriyaki on a stick was a little salty and didnt really taste like teriyaki, which could be a fluke, I guess we will see. I dont like the dumplings, they're super thick breading, which causes them to not be crisp, so they taste weirdly doughy. Maybe this is me being nitpicky, but the straws are not tall enough for the cups. Overall, I would come back. read more
