Steak, pot roast, meatloaf, chicken to name a few meats, taco bar, salad bar, plenty of veggies and southern sides. Dessert bar consisted of key lime pie, Carrot cake, cheesecake to name a few choices. Plenty of seating. , but tables are close and leave limited leg room to stretch and relax. I rarely eat at a buffet, but I got some coupons in the mail and thought I'd give them a try. I'll start out with the most positive thing I noticed and that was the customer service. I walked in with a coupon to get a discount on my breakfast. After presenting it to the young man working the register, he politely asked me if by chance I was over the age of 60. When I responded that I was well beyond that number, he handed me the coupon back. He informed me that my senior discount, was a better deal then the coupon. His honesty got points with me. Then as I got my coffee cup, the young lady working the floor asked me if I'd need cream. I told her no, but I appreciated her proactive approach. Once seated, she kept my cup full of hot coffee and cleared away my empty/used plates quickly. The food was a good variety. They offered bacon and both patty and link sausage. I was surprised that they had both regular and blueberry pancakes. What really shocked me, was they had a omelette bar. They had a cook preparing fresh omelettes with a huge selection of ingredients. Per my daughter: I can't believe I risked my bowels for a 6 out of 10 star lunch. So the rumor is that this has recently reopened. The food is okay buffet food. While the cost for a family of 4 is high, the service this night was flawless. Our waitress was there at every opportunity, offering refills, removing dirty plates, and being pleasant while doing so. The food was mostly fresh, including the salad bar. Fried fish was crisp, yet not dried out. The steak was moist and tender, regardless of the preparedness of our liking. Ugh. Gross. Overcooked shrimp, mashed potatoes looked like pudding. Most items were mushy or overcooked, or both. The steam table was comprised of tiny pans that held very little food. This would last for about four or five servings, then you would have to wait for another half hour or it never showed up. I asked about meatloaf and was told it would be 3 minutes. I waited at the steam table for 45 minutes. I came back and found they had placed a napkin holder in the pan. After 45 minutes the mashed potatoes showed up. These could have been served with a syringe The manager blew me off when I asked about the prodigal food items, explaining,. "we're doing the best we can.". I believe some people were doing the best they could. The manager? I don't think so. I offered to go in the back and make mashed potatoes which was vetoed. Wishing somebody there knew how to boil water and add potato flakes butter and salt. No such luck. Now, the Golden Corral in Collinsville which was a much better managed restaurant is closed. I don't know why everyone rates this place so low. We have our Church Brotherhood meeting here every once in a month on Saturday. They have great service and make us welcome. The food is good and we will continue to use this place. They have a wonderful Conference Room but sometimes we have our meeting if it's a small amount with the other customers. Fried Chicken = Dry Roast Beef = Dry Bourbon Chicken = Burnt Corn = Bland Fish = Bland I did enjoy the banana pudding and the Rice Krispie treats! I have very mixed feelings on this establishment, when you walk in the door there isn't a lot of room in the line where you pre-pay for your meal. The cashiers were friendly and smiling and that makes a big difference. The host happily escorted us to our seats when our group was ready. I found the establishment to be clean and ready to do business. However, there was one big turn off, it was entirely too congested. It was like standing in Grant Park in downtown Chicago for the Taste of Chicago. I must say that the food was always ready and very flavorful. Nothing beats Golden Coral after a day scouting eagles on the Mississippi. My famished party headed to the Alton Golden Coral, which was recommended to us by a local community leader. The thing about a buffet is - get this - you can get as much food as you want! Nobody cares! You're your only limit. As we entered, we saw a group of GC aficionados. They were dressed in purple track pants and shouted, "Gold Core! Hard Core!" while high-fiving and pounding their chests. And when we got to the buffet, we could see why. Each plate was a canvas waiting to be filled with our fried chicken pastels and mashed potatoes oil paints. I like to think of it as an art form. The miniature hamburgers, with their tender meat and delectable buns, really stole the show. With their Brussels Sprout accomplices, my first plate was love at first bite. And you want buns?! THEY GOT BUNS! Golden and toasty straight from the oven at the lighthouse bay grillhouse. You really can't go wrong. Except for Jimmy who got the pasta. A few cold noodles really ruined what was until then a flawless experience. But the catfish was perfect, the hush puppies mouth-watering, and while the whitefish needed some flavor, it was not bad at all with a little pepper and salt. We ate like Greek gods, each plate prancing across our palates. With our stomaches rounds and our hearts light, we put down our forks and raised our smiles. The beautiful thing about buffets is that you are the artist. As I looked around our table, I saw before me the van goghs and Dalis of southern cooking. We had each sculpted our potatoes, molded our mac and cheese, composed our perfect plates out of the raw* ingredients of the Gold Core experience (* note: buffet food not actually raw). Butter was our material; our stomachs our muse. Nestled in the heartland's Alton Illinois is a rare gem: a true meritocracy, where each individual is given equal footing in the buffet table of life. The Golden Corral in Alton, Illinois is FANTASTIC. The food is good but the friendliness and service of staff is really what's outstanding. I've eaten there for two Thanksgiving and one Christmas while visiting family. Obviously those holidays have to be the worst assignment for staff. But in my experiences staff never fails to smile, ask how you are feeling, and make sure you are comfortable. Even when you leave, random staff will wish you a good night or safe trip. Today I was pleased to be served by Symons at cashier, Mallory at my table, Dimitri behind various grills and food stations, and a guy in an orange GC shirt who found a table for 5 of us. This location is dirty. Every time that I would go there (about 3 times a week for lunch for my school organization) the dishes would be dirty, all of them (cups, plates, bowls). There was one incident where people had removed all of the dirty cups from the rack and it was literally almost half of the cups, and one of the workers got an attitude because THEIR CUPS WEREN'T CLEAN and put ALL of the dirty cups right back in the rack. Another time, I had to go through at least 7 bowls just to find a decent one to eat out of. The plates would have nastiness on BOTH sides. Who wants to eat off of dirty dishes. read more
