I woke up Wednesday morning with a migraine, so I hadn't eaten ALL day. The one thing that sounded good was Golden Dragon's egg drop soup. It is the best. Loaded with plenty of egg whites, green onions, a deep brothy flavor, and best of all some extra protein with the chicken they add in theirs. I also really enjoy their fried rice. They put in fresh bean sprouts which adds that freshness and crunch. All we ordered was 1 order of beef fried rice, 1 order of chicken egg drop soup, and 2 sprites. Totaling a little over $20. An affordable meal for two, as we can split those two items and still have food leftover. So good sized portions as well. Golden Dragon has been a staple in the Ozark area ever since I was a kid. I was reminiscing that night sitting in the drive through, talking to my son about a time when I remembered when they were dine in and had a buffet! He had no idea that they were a full blown restaurant once upon a time. I say all of this as a prelude to once we got home and opened our order. We DIDN'T order any vegetable spring rolls, but they had thrown in a little bag of them just for us. This may have been a small gesture on their part, but it really made me smile and feel better from a day that was not so great. For the last year or so they haven't had the dining room open and we typically preferred not to eat in the car or take it home and eat it soggy so we bypassed the place completely. For 15+ years it's kind of been a go to an a staple when we're in Ozark area. I just called tonight and they said that the dining room is open and we're gonna go back in and have a meal. Chicken itself was delicious and the rice was cooked nicely. The flavor of the cashew chicken isn't my favorite, it's not bad, just not my cup of tea and I can't pinpoint why. Partner had never had lemon chicken before and wasn't sure what it was going to taste like. He said the flavor wasn't bad but it was too sweet for his liking. I tasted it and I agree. This store has been hit by flooding several times now, and they still keep coming back, with GREAT food, and good service. They only offer drive through, but it's good to go. I always get the cashew chicken special which comes with plenty of chicken, rice and eggroll or crag Rangoon. My husband gets the sweet and sour chicken and loves it. I came to this place because some friends were just raving about the cashew chicken. So we got that. I am Chinese and let me just say this didn't taste like real Chinese one bit. Even Panda Express is more Chinese than this! Lol and the sauce was so runny! That was very odd. There were also hardly any cashews. We got the order to go and they only gave four napkins! Here, they did not want to even consider it for the animal eaters who did not want spicy on a dish otherwise acceptable to them. THEN I asked if their tofu dishes were vegan, and after a series of questions as they tried to figure out what was in the food they were selling to the public, it was determined that unlike MOST Chinese restaurants, they do not use vegetable broth, they use flesh broth. So we said we would have to leave and FINALLY Young came out and offered to cook a meal for us vegans using water instead of flesh broth, assuring us of a completely vegan meal. I think "mom" wanted people to take it her way or the highway and son was willing to seek new customers and was very kind and understanding. He said to tell other vegans to ask for "Young's vegan tofu and veggies" so others can order it. So we ordered spicy tofu and it was not spicy but they did bring hot pepper flakes upon request. The animal eaters did not really like their meals, our vegan ones were ok. They batch cook their fried rice so it is not made fresh for each customer. Have tried it in the past with bad experiences with bad service, slow, cold food and poor tasting food. Decided to give it another try tonight and nothing has changed. Made an order for 2 simple dishes to go. 30 minutes later I had to ask where it was. They discovered it prepped and packaged and forgotten. Got the order home and part of the order was missing and then food was cold. The general sauce tasted like a simple mix of soy sauce, too much salt, cherry syrup and red pepper flakes. If there was such a thing as a six star review this would be the one that I would give. I have specifically waited until the right time to write this review because this establishment is probably the most influential restaurant in my life. I have been coming here since before I can remember. I have watched the business get passed down from parents to son, I remember 20 years ago when you had to ask for a non smoking section (not that this place smells like smoke because it doesn't, just dating my reference here), I remember when I played sports in the nearby park as a child and coming here after for a warm meal. This restaurant is more than just a staple point in Ozark, Missouri, it embodies the tradition and food culture that we Springfieldians have created in the form of Cashew Chicken. We all have our favorite Cashew Chicken restaurant and there is a million and one arguments why each one is somebody's favorite, this one is my favorite because it is a taste of home for me. Now on to my actual review of this fantastic restaurant. If you are not familiar with "Springfield Cashew Chicken" this is the place to give it a whirl. My childhood favorite was the Sweet and sour (it should be noted that it is different, and so much better than most places, as it is more than just a sticky red goo, it is an actual sauce with fantastic flavor) but now as an adult I have become more of a Cashew Chicken kind of guy. If you like dark meat they have the best around, if you don't then order all white meat for a small, but worth it, up charge. I love their general chicken as well but it is also not like other places. Some general chicken in the area is sweet, this is not. Their general chicken is more soy and garlic based with just a little bit of spice (the perfect amount in my opinion.) I am very loyal to those dishes above but my family loves other things on the menu as well, they are as follows: Cashew Chicken (extra spicy), chicken broccoli, beef bulgogi (Korean BBQ, comes out on a fajita like hot plate), Youngs Spicy Chicken (I believe this is still not on the menu but it is a Sriracha and sweet and sour based sauce over fried chicken and it is superb, also it is named after the current owner). We all enjoy their egg rolls, Crabrangoons (best in the area in my humble opinion), and their cheesecake egg rolls as well. I could write a novel about the food at this place but the food is only half of what makes this place great. The other half is in the ownership, employees, ambiance, and overall service. The owner is a man by the name of Young. He is fantastic at treating his customers right. One time in twenty some years a waitress misplaced our order and after about fifteen minutes I asked where it was, young came out with our food immediately and a gift certificate for our next visit, this is the kind of business owner he is, he rights the wrongs that are inevitable and runs a clean family friendly business. The wait staff here has been incredible over the years and still is today, they are well trained, quick, attentive, and all seem to put on that smile that says "I enjoy my job". The ambiance is unique for a place like this. It is located north just off the bank of the 3rd street bridge which crosses the Finley River just south of the park. You can walk just down from the restaurant to where the Ozark Riverwalk begins (a great way to spend the afternoon by the way). Recently Golden Dragon remodeled and updated the decor, menu, and added a fresh coat of paint, needless to say it is a quaint little place now. They also added free wifi with their most recent remodel. There is plenty of parking most of the time., the to-go window is pretty quick for a sit down restaurant, and you are always welcome to call in an order ahead of time and pick it up either inside or at the window. I think I have finally said most of my favorite things about Golden Dragon. I love this place and I hope that I can treat my own kids to some of the experiences I have had here one day. Being a California visitor, it was really hard finding an exotic and healthy place to dine with friends and family during my weeklong visit. However, this place was one of my boyfriend's favorites when he was a Missouri resident. I'm glad he took me here because I'm a pescetarian, and I was craving for some veggies and tofu. Luckily, they had tofu and vegetarian dishes that were pretty tasty. The customer service is really great and the restaurant is nice and clean. They definitely give you your money's worth. Hot Cho's is the one for me. Lots of fresh veggies with white meat chicken. It's not deep fried. A little spicy and you can always ask for more spice. The atmosphere is classic! The to-go order was a little better, handed out in a paper bag rather than flimsy plastic. I did like that. But, what happened to the days when Chinese food came in those boxes with the metal handle? You know, the ones invented for Chinese takeout so it doesn't spill? The egg rolls are the exact same ones every other Chinese restaurant has: and they taste exactly the same too. It's not the restaurant's fault though. Almost all Asian food is going downhill in the US, because restaurant owners are limited to one of only two wholesale Asian food providers. Good American Chinese food, literally born here in this area with the invention of cashew chicken, is a thing of the past. There are ZERO good Chinese food restaurants in this area. I love the chinese food here. My boyfriend and I come here when we're craving some good chinese food. The only thing about it is you have to know what's good in order to be able to eat it. The first time I tried it, I got the Garlic Chicken. It was a bad decision. I didn't like the sauce, but the chicken itself was delicious. The second time I got Cashew, the third, I got Sweet n Sour. My absolute favorite Chinese, including all the restaurants in Springfield. I grew up eating Golden Dragon and look so forward to anytime I'm in the area and can grab some. The breading on the chicken is so good - fluffy and fresh. I never get one of those weird bites of fat/rubbery chicken that I sometimes do at other places. The Cashew Chicken is the best I've ever had, and I will also say that about the crab rangoon. My husband loves the Young's Spicy Chicken. I love everything. Egg rolls, Lo Mein, Chicken livers... if you're super hungry don't get the combo, get the larger portion. read more
