Do NOT waste your time supporting this place!! I've waited a couple of weeks to write this review as I was super disappointed from our visit to this establishment. We should have left when the waitress told us as she seated us that they were closing the kitchen in 15 minutes so if we wanted anything from there we needed to hurry. My husband asked what time they closed and she said they were open for another hour. We placed our order quickly - Pad Thai and Chicken Fried Rice. The food came out in less than 10 minutes. I had previously ordered the Pad Thai there and loved it...this time it was so incredibly spicy that I couldn't eat it. My husband asked the waitress if something had changed in the way they prepared it and she said they had a new menu, then came back and said the oil was different. We asked to see the menu and as my husband was looking at it she very hatefully asked him if he found what he was looking for. We pointed out where the menu says nothing about the Pad Thai being spicy and told her we didn't want to pay for it. She disappeared into the back and then came back to tell us that the owner had left and no one else had a register code to do refunds. She told me to call the next day to request a refund. So called the next day and the owner apologized- said the waitress had entered the order as spicy and said he would refund my card later that day - big surprise my card was NEVER refunded. So disappointed to lose a favorite restaurant off the list - we will never be back. read more

The service was good. We tried the teriyaki chicken and the Polynesian curry chicken. Both menu items contained chicken and vegetables that were cooked and served in a sauce. I expected more of a Japanese (stir fry) meat and veggies served in a sauce because of the name of the restaurant and the fact that they serve Sushi. The food at Maru is always phenomenal but they are VERY slow on take out. Plan on adding at least fifteen minutes to any window. Also, the staff never know names of sauces. They could use a sushi tutorial. read more

First time trying this place and not a fan. Sushi is fresh I'll give them that but $17 for a Cali roll that has the thinnest slice of salmon on it I've ever seen isn't worth it. Due to them slicing it so thinly, it's not holding its shape either and falling apart a bit, plus it's not even covering the sides but just sits a bit on top. We asked them if they could sear the salmon too and were charger $2 extra for that so that was a little weird since no other place ever had an issue with it. The waiter was very polite and great at his job though. As someone who eats sushi often, this place is just one I would not recommend. There's definitely better ones. read more

This place really is a gem. Head chef Michael Moon and staff have a way of elevating the expected to an entirely higher level. Take the hot and sour soup as an example. All my life I've pretty much had the same everywhere. Maru keeps the essential hot/sour contrast but adds some ingredient twists that will get you smiling and wondering why no one else has done this. There is also a high level of creativity with drinks too, alcoholic or not. Two people in our party got a fruit punch that they loved. One of them says they normally don't like fruit punch so once again, an example of expectations being shattered upwards. I could go on - Panko-fried Oreos for dessert!! - but hopefully you get it. Which is to say these folks from the food destination city of Chicago will sure be back to Maru if we're anywhere close (it's about 10 minutes off of I-44 at Springfield). read more

The food was exceptional. My husband had miso soup and I had Pork Dumpling Soup, which was light tasty and with sesame oil. We both ordered Pork Katsu, which is my new favorite dish. We definitely will be back to order this dish and there are so many other wonderful selections to explore. The staff was attentive, but not overly so. They were personable, friendly and always available when we needed them. The bill was there in a timely way and we didn't have to wait forever to check out. This was our first time at this restaurant. We ordered four rolls. The spicy tuna roll was disgusting. The tuna tasted old, overly fishy, frozen. the owner came out and picked up a piece of the spicy tuna roll and ate it in front of us. And then told us we are wrong and there's nothing wrong with it. and then said we will have to pay for it. I informed him I will pay for it, but I won't be coming back. He promptly went back to the back and started yelling at his kitchen staff about this and loudly, and rudely was yelling about my sister and I. We will never eat here again. I was not expecting this. I mean, this is Ozark, where chains and cashew chicken abound. What an amazing find--and walking distance from my house! I can't believe I've been passing this up literally daily since I moved here eight months ago. While I couldn't get a straight answer from the sushi chefs precisely where they source their fish (they just kept telling me that Mike, the owner, handles all of the ordering), it's clear they take pride and cares in sourcing high quality and fresh fish. And believe me, I know fresh fish: I spent 17 years living in Alaska, and it's very rare for me to be happy with, much less pleasantly surprised by, the quality and freshness of fish anywhere south of the 55th parallel--or within steps of the Tsukiji fish market. And this place does it better than just about any place I've eaten outside of Japan--and better than any sushi I've found in Alaska (for whatever reason, sushi places in Alaska haven't figured out how to source quality local fish). The only one that even comes close is Mitsu Neko just down the road in Branson, which overnights fresh bigeye fillets from Hawaii every Friday (and yes, I still love them, too). Maru doesn't overnight fillets: they actually receive the entire unprocessed, unfrozen *whole* fish and clean and fillet it in-house. And it shows. Even the salmon, which often has a strong flavor, was light and delicate, without a hint of fishiness (yes, fish should NEVER taste fishy; if it does, then you know it's not fresh--it's really as simple as that). I'm actually somewhat disappointed and scared that they're only five minutes away from me, because it means I will probably eat there multiple times a week, which my wallet is not going to like. But they're worth the premium, because fish this good (and prepared this well) is not something to be taken for granted. read more

Thanks, I hate it. Drive a bit farther north to springfeild and you will find WAY better sushi. This place is ripping off people who don't know what is normal. The only reason this places gets 2 stars is the waitress was wonderful and the place was nice inside. My review is based off sushi and noodles. DO NOT waste your money on sushi here. You can get better at the grocery store. They cut corners and give you Shit. 1. White Russian. It's a spicy tuna roll with white tuna on top. The amount of actual spicy tuna in it was SO small you could not taste it. It literally was 90% cucumber. Look at the photo for yourself. It was a joke. You cant have people paying $15+ for a fucking cucumber roll. Give me a break. The spicy tuna itself was bland and lacking in color. No doubt just a commercial paste OR been sitting for days or been frozen and thawed multiple times. The fish on top was okay. But sliced so thin- poor portion for such an Expensive roll! 2. French kiss. I liked the creativity of this roll. It was supposed to be shrimp tempura, avocado, crab, and cream cheese. First thing is you can visibly the shrimp tempura is NOT Fresh and like clearly days old. By taste It was not crunchy, it was chewy. And anyone with a brain can VISIBLY see it was not close to fresh. Just look at the photo. The shrimp has shrank in size, due to drying out and losing all moisture. THAT MEANS IT IS OLD. The shrimp would fall out of the tempura batter- that's how old this was. Days old no doubt - this is such poor sushi execution. The amount of avocado was a joke. Don't put it on the fucjing roll if your going to put a dick hair amount of avocado. Avocado is one of the most Expensive none seafood items in sushi, if you can't afford to give a fair (NORMAL) amount, stop advertising it. What a joke.! Same for the salmon on top. They topped the roll with mango Ceviche (I did not like it but I cannot comment on the execution. I do believe it was not fresh but possibly canned fruit). They cut corners but putting half the normal size of salmon on top. Again charging 15+ for a roll that does not have fair portion on it! 3. Noodles: fair. Can't really mess them up 4. Tempura vegetables. As others have said, the pieces are WAY TOO BIG. Like, you needed a fork and knife to eat it. The dipping sauce was poor, appeared to be watered down and slightly sweetened soy- but a poor attempt at it. Some of the rolls are heavy rice on top and almost flat on the bottom, I would bet money that some rolls are made days in advance. This is place is cutting corners and ripping people off. The normal ozark folk probably don't know this place is serving them trash. I will ever go back even if someone offered to pay for my food read more

Great food!!!! Great service! Our server was Drew and although he had a huge party at another table, he never forgot us. Prices were reasonable. The seafood on our sushi and my tempura was high quality and very fresh. I knocked a star down simply because ambience need some work. They have contemporary decor mixed with Asian knick knacks. Also the booth we sat at had cracked vinyl and the chairs were showing a lot of wear. They have a very clean restaurant but it's starting to look shabby. Needs a bit of TLC on decor. read more

I don't even know how to start. I ordered the shrimp and vegetable tempura. The vegetables were cut so thick that they were hard to bite into even after frying. Pad Thai noodles was another dish. We got chicken and all you could taste was like sesame oil. Not traditional or authentic in any fashion. Next item was sesame chicken. The sauce was so thick no sweetness to it and almost like it was burnt then sesame seeds sprinkled across the top. Too expensive to be worse than a run down fast food joint. The nigiri was the most disgusting, spolied, fowl fish I've ever tasted. I ordered the salmon and some of the tuna. Every piece tasted like it had turned and they attempted to put some weird seasoning on it to cover up the taste. The rice tasted like they soaked it in urine. I threw every bit of it away and what I ate I went to the bathroom and forced it back out so I didn't get sick. This place is going to seriously make someone sick. I called and spoke to the owner and I told him I didn't want a refund or anything, I just wanted someone to know the fish they served me was spoiled. I was very respectful and didn't insult him or his business at all. The owner just got offended and proceeded to go off on a rant about all his accomplishments and how much better he is than all the other sushi restaurants and how his fish is a far higher quality than every restaurant in the area. Take the extra 15 minutes to drive to springfield and visit a quality restaurant that's worth the money and won't make you sick. I've had better nigiri from sams for 10 bucks. read more

I really rarely put negative reviews on restaurants but with so many reviews promoting the restaurant I had to be honest to my experience. I just got some takeout from the restaurant. I ordered orange chicken, the cucumber roll, the spicy salmon roll, and the chirashi donburi. The only thing that was enjoyable between my boyfriend and I was the orange chicken. The sushi rice was hard and falling apart so bad I couldn't even pick up a piece without it crumbling. The chirashi donburi had tons of lemon slices all over the rice and fish which put a unsavory lemon rind flavor on the entire dish. It came with quite a bit of fish, but the amount of fish means nothing if none of it tastes good. For paying $50 I was expecting something a little better than grocery store sushi. I hate being negative but it was really disappointing for the high price being paid. read more

One of our favorite places to eat in Ozark. The service can be slow at times, so don't show up if you're in a hurry but the sushi is all made fresh at the counter and everything tastes delicious. I think we have tried just about every roll on the menu and they are relatively inexpensive. We can eat dinner on a date night for less than $30 with drinks! They also make great traditional Chinese meals if sushi isn't your think. The cashew chicken or General chicken are inexpensive ($8) and you get plenty to eat. read more

Ordered a groupon for Mother's Day. When we arrived, the board had " no vouchers" When I asked why? He replied they didn't accept them on holidays. I showed him the fine print that read "national holiday" was the exclusion and if I would have known, I would not have traveled the distance. Maru is, in my opinion, definitely the best place to get sushi in Ozark, and probably in all of Christian County (not a lot to pick from, generally). It is on-par with what you will find in the nicer sushi places in Springfield, and has some unique items on the menu that you can't find elsewhere. Located in a shopping center, the interior is surprisingly well done and feels a more upscale that most other dining options in the area. They are kid friendly though - the menu has some options for kids, although mine insist on ordering the $14 specialty rolls. They do have a sushi happy hour as well as daily specials, but otherwise prices are pretty standard for this fare. My favorite roll is the Maru Delight, and we always enjoy the Fire Specialty rolls both for their presentation (they arrive to the table wrapped in foil and surrounded by flames) and the different experience of warm sushi. Their menu also includes traditional "asian" food like broccoli beef and fried rice, but I've only ever eaten sushi here. If you want good sushi in a nice setting, Maru is worth a visit. read more
