I came by on a Friday morning around 10 for breakfast. It's a cute cafe, but just breakfast basics. The server was friendly and gave excellent service. Other than the small size and small menu, it's great for a quick bite.

Left plate: Chefs Omelette (hollandaise sauce on top is crazy good) Top middle: the butteriest pancakes and syrup ever Right plate: classic over easy eggs w/ sausage and bacon, hashbrowns (well season and crispy) & Damn good hot coffee Alright -- place is too damn good to be a 3.8, Mexican ladies here a quick and sweet, great service, classic and fresh breakfast dishes, and the coffee is hot and good! Can't ask for a better neighborhood joint, I bet you this is what Dennys diner tasted like back in the day!

    * good for breakfast * local cafe * service is always great * small cafe but they added outdoor tables * casual ambiance Been coming here for years. The chilaquiles are always a fav, tortilla soul here is amazing. The omelet today needed a bit more flavor but all and all this place is oldie but goodie. A must-try.

Firstly, the service was great. Such friendly ladies and were checking up on us a lot, plus they were quick. The diner itself is quite cute, it's small and has nice pastel colors. The food was okay, a little more on the plain side (although they did have sauces and seasoning on each table that you could add). I was not super fond of how unclean some of the dishware was. I ordered a coffee and they handed me a mug with dust all around the rim as well as a spoon that looked like it was dipped in dust. I wiped all the dust off, but who knows if I drank any. Please just double check your dishware and utensils before serving them to customers. In any case, my husband enjoyed the club sandwich he ordered although the fries that came with it were a little plain. I appreciated how I got really warm tortillas with the eggs a la mexicana that I ordered as well.

Golden Hill Cafe is such a cute and quaint little diner. It's tiny and it has been around for decades. Some of the best pancakes I've had are from here. If you're in a brunch mood - I highly recommend the chilaquiles. Next time, I'll order over-medium eggs. Sunny side up was too runny for me. The servers and cooks here are clearly experienced. You can grab a bite to eat - and be in and out of this joint in minutes! They are quick and the food is always served hot. You can't beat the prices here. A meal for my husband and I costs us $20-$30, compared to $50-$60 everywhere else in San Diego.

3.5 This place is a time capsule when you walk inside. My dad said this corner area could be filmed for a throwback movie like Back II the Future. Every week my dad asks me to go to the same 2 restaurants he goes to for breakfast, and I loathe going. So, I always try to suggest something different. He grew up near GHC, so I figured we'd check it out since it's nearby where I had to go. Inside has been well kept. Everything feels like I've traveled back in time. The booths are still firm and they even have real glass cups. It's timeless inside. The food is pretty average, nothing super amazing here, but it's a consistent low key diner. I ordered the machaca, though it lacks seasoning and the veggies were the same as the ones cut for a Denver omelette, it was still a good option. Portions aren't crazy and nothing was greasy.

I was looking at yelp to get brunch. This place isn't really all that aesthetic. Coming here is more so quick and convenient. Food was tasty and there wasn't that much interaction on service.

The definition of a mom and pop restaurant. It doesn't get more local than Golden Hill Cafe. You can tell this is an family establishment that's been through the times. This place really a diner, which means don't come here expecting mind blowing experience with service and food. Come in enjoy some cheap, solid food made with love. I'm very glad places like this still exist even after 2020 and hope it continues to stay as the local eatery for years to come. Stopped by for lunch and got the California turkey melt. Crispy fries and solid turkey melt with sourdough, the melt had roasted pepper to give it a mild kick. My partner got the Farmer's Mix, which is like a kitchen sink omelet with biscuit and gravy on the side. Both were solid choices. Service was super nice and welcoming. Stop by, pay cash and tip big!

This is a local joint that is everything you want a local breakfast joint to be: no fuss good food. Let me also state that we go here when we specifically have one dish in mind: their chilaquiles. Surprisingly people mess chilaquiles up A LOT and thus far this is our favorite in San Diego. We get them spicy and they are perfectly crispy and the sauce is divine. We also go here for pancakes or French toast when we feel like just a nice diner type of breakfast (their pancakes are better than their French toast in my opinion). The location is at the corner of a semi-main street but there is always plenty of street parking and a parking lot attached to the side. They reopened seating inside and have outdoor seating along the street. Service is always great but be aware that weekends get a lil busy.

Our waitress was attentive, checked on us regularly, and kept us updated on when our food would be coming out. She was friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. I ordered the: Country Fried Steak: this was by far the best country fried steak I've had in San Diego! It was absolutely huge. I ended up taking half of it home for leftovers. Lafayette Beginners Diner…read more Spontaneously, decided to visit Lafayette Hotel yesterday. Walked straight towards Beginners Diner outdoor patio which overlooks the pool, it was crowded. Despite the crowds, there were a few seats available to sit and dine. Usually one must check in with the manager inside the diner, but this time the manager happened to be a few steps away and she said I could sit anywhere I wanted...YAY! I had my pup Fendi in tow and we sat down for a while to enjoy the usual cool music and be voyeurs. As with most diners, it would be better if all the selections on the menu is available to order 24/7. Many items are only available to order during particular times. It was a sunny hot San Diego day, which called for an icy mocktail, a Greek salad and small french fries. The yogurt dill sauce enhanced the taste of both the salad and fries... so good. Service from the manager and servers were cordial, attentive and friendly. A bowl of water was offered for my baby and I always appreciate that extra effort. There were only a few stools available at the counter, but I was greeted right away by the hostess and seated immediately. A waiter quickly brought me a glass of water and a menu. I ordered the: * Country Fried Steak (3/5): The breading was nice and crispy, but the steak itself was pretty mediocre. It also didn't come with nearly enough gravy, so I asked another server for extra, and she was kind enough to bring me some. The meal comes with two sides. You can choose from creamed spinach, green beans, sautéed corn, or broccoli along with a carb of mashed potatoes, a baked potato, fries, or onion rings. I chose: * Sautéed Corn: Unfortunately, this had a strange flavor. It really could have used some butter and salt. * Mashed Potatoes: The potatoes themselves were fine, but the gravy wasn't the traditional style you'd expect with mashed potatoes, and I wasn't a fan. One positive was how quickly the food came out; it took less than 10 minutes from ordering to being served. The prices are definitely on the higher end. My country fried steak was $32, and my total came to just over $40 with tip. One thing that stood out was how disorganized the service felt. There was a hostess, around five different servers, and even the manager helping on the floor. I never had one dedicated server throughout my meal. One person took my order, another brought the extra gravy, the manager delivered my food, and someone else cashed me out. Even though it was busy, it's not a very large restaurant, so the service felt unnecessarily chaotic. They could definitely improve the overall customer experience with better organization. Parking can also be difficult, so keep that in mind if you're visiting during peak hours. Overall, it's a cute spot, and I appreciated finding country fried steak since it's not something you see on many menus anymore. Unfortunately, both the food and the service were pretty average. I'm glad I tried it, but I don't think it's a place I'd go out of my way to return to.

Vibes: In the heart of Downtown San Diego, there are a lot of eateries and activities. The spot itself, Saint James feels like someone took an old-school American diner, sent it on a trip to Paris, and brought it back to San Diego. You still get the casualness and familiarity of a diner, but with the moodier lighting, décor, bar, and menu of a French bistro. It's stylish without feeling like you need to be overly dressed up. Being tucked into the Palihotel also gives it that cool boutique-hotel energy. FOOD / DRINKS Burger Parisienne (Recommend) A comforting flavor with some simple french influence. At its core, you've got something very American: a juicy cheeseburger. Then the French influence with the caramelized onions and a rich bordelaise (sweet wine) sauce. It's rich, savory, and makes this much more of a fork-and-knife burger than your typical grab-it-and-go situation. French Martini (Recommend) When at a French restaurant, do French things. Fruity, smooth, and easy to drink. You get the sweetness and tartness you'd expect from a French Martini, making it a nice contrast to the richness of the Burger Parisienne. CUSTOMER SERVICE Friendly, attentive, and professional. Can't complain! TL;DR OVERALL 4 Stars. Good food, good drinks, and that balances French flavors with American culture. The restaurant itself has an open and welcoming atmosphere, comfortable seating, good a/c, friendly service, a good variety of menu options...however, the cost for what you get doesn't equate. Now, their prices are fair, compared to many other places out there, but due to the lack of quality it just hits harder. My Monte Cristo was so sad-looking and dry. The turkey was heavily peppered, which might be okay in any other turkey sandwich, but this did not go well with what a Monte Cristo should taste like (iykyk)...even when the raspberry jam was added all you could taste was pepper. In addition to the strong pepper taste, the turkey itself was extremely dry and shredded to pieces when I tried to remove it. Very disappointed. When I told our waiter, who was very friendly and had been attentive, he said that he'd let the cook know--and that was it. No follow up. No apology. My son had the French toast and it was okay, nothing special. I usually have lunch here, but it's been a few years since I've been here for breakfast -- so this was a bummer. The past few times I felt like the quality was slipping, but I chalked it up to a possible "off" day...but this recent visit confirmed that they weren't "off" days and the quality truly has slipped. Hopefully they can reevaluate things and make some improvements. They have a good menu and nice concept, I just hope they improve their quality and presentation.
