Came here on a weekday evening with friends. We ordered the: Mushroom burger, bacon burger, regular burger, frings, and a strawberry milkshake. I really enjoyed my mushroom burger. Juicy and large portion. Although I didn't taste the other burgers, I also received high praise from my friends regarding these items. For the frings, I thought the fries were average, but I really enjoyed the onion rings. They were fresh and had the perfect crunch. My friends got the milkshake and thought it was standard. Even though I thought the food was solid, I was truly impressed by the service. The person behind the counter was so busy but he took the time to explain the menu to me and was extremely friendly. He also didn't try to rush us or kick us out after the diner closed (we ordered pretty close to closing time). I noticed that he even took orders from people who came slightly after closing too. Other great things: easy parking and awesome looking decor. Come if you want to experience a meal in a diner setting. I came here on a Saturday evening for dinner after seeing the amazing Yelp reviews. It's a very unassuming restaurant on the corner of a little shopping center. Inside there aren't too many seats but it has a cool American diner feel. They have thrifty's ice cream up in the front and some counter seats. They had the TVs on playing the World Cup game when we got there. The service was prompt and good. One guy walked around the restaurant smiling and greeting everyone. They gave us extra sauces and cups of water when we requested. For food, my husband and I ordered a mushroom burger, the slap-up burger which was a double patty cheeseburger, chili cheese fries, and onion rings. My favorite thing was the slap-up burger. The patty's were thick and meaty and I loved that the cheese didn't overpower the beef taste. The mushroom burger was also very meaty, but felt a little more dry to me. It came with mushrooms and bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, and pickles. I added some of their homemade ranch which helped a lot with the dryness. The chili cheese fries were okay for me. The fries were a little more on the starchy side and not too crispy. I liked the chili cheese but wish the chili was a little more hearty. The onion rings were delicious. They were crunchy and had a little extra seasoning sprinkled on. The onions were perfectly tender inside and tasted delicious dipped in their homemade ranch. Omg the vanilla ice cream in the root beer float is so thick and creamy. We loved the fries and chili cheese fries! One thing about Malt Shop, they're going to make a saucy chili cheese. Maybe too much.. The burgers taste homemade which is the best part about it. The explosive boom burger is classic w/ jalapeños but I was missing the kick of spice. I came back to try a burger and their fries today, and they did not disappoint. I had the blue cheese burger and chili cheese fries with a couple sides of ranch. No complaints here. The food was awesome. As always, these gentleman are always welcoming and accommodating. If you're only ordering malts, they ask if you'd like water while you wait. Lived here my whole life and today was my first time eating here! Pleasantly surprised. Small and busy but decent amount of seating. Vintage diner feel for sure. I ordered the Caliente Burger, and the burger was delicious! I wasn't sure if one patty was enough meat, so I added an extra patty. The burger came out and was incredibly juicy, stacked high, and smothered in melted pepper jack cheese. There was some heat to the burger, but it wasn't as spicy as I would have liked it to be. The burger was cooked to perfection as ordered! The service was friendly, attentive, and that made the whole dining experience easy and enjoyable. When I say great service, the staff goes above and beyond to make sure you have what you need during your visit! The restaurant was clean, comfortable, and had nice, relaxed vibes, which made it a great place to sit and actually enjoy the meal. Right away walking in it was lively, and you could feel the joy and happiness radiating from customers and the gentlemen working. They took great care of me, I ordered zucchini sticks, corn dog, and a root beer float, and sat at the cute bar. Float was phenomenal, creamy, tasty ice cream, just the pick me up I really needed. We came in on a Saturday evening it was busy but not too crowded. We ordered and were able to find a seat. We enjoyed our food. The fries were just ok but the burgers and the zucchini sticks were very good. They toasted my bun pretty crispy which I really enjoyed. It also helped to give my veggie burger some structure. I also got my son a chocolate milkshake he was pretty excited for. There seemed to be a lot of regulars which gave the place a nice vibe. My sister really wanted a malt and even asked the In N Out drive through guy if they offered them (No). But that guy recommended Classics Malt Shop down in the Midway district so we went there the next day. The man taking orders (owner? manager?) was so nice and friendly. He really was enthusiastic and helpful. He even threw in a free order of Frings (fries and onion rings) when he found out this was our first time there and that we came in on a recommendation. The four of us in our party each had a malt (one vanilla and three classic Black and White) and man, they were tasty. I even saw they use the old school Carnation Malted Milk power that our family used when I was a kid. That rocks! We had lunch there also with my wife having a mushroom burger and myself having a Classic Cheeseburger. Others in our party had Classic regular burger and the Chicken Strips meal. We added an order of sweet potato fries and the aforementioned complimentary order of Frings and we were ready for a nap! I don't think I ate for a day after that meal. Super filling. Love this local small restaurant! We tend to go here when we'll be nearby at the Sports Arena, or as a central meeting point. I like that they have quite a few choices for a small place. This last time, we tried the Philly fries and the zucchini. Philly fries were huge, and delicious! I ordered no peppers, and it was enough left over for 2 servings. The zucchini was also good, and we had some of that left as well. Choices like salads, hotdogs, sandwiches, and burgers. They also do things like chocolate or cherry Cokes, floats, or sundaes. Staff is all super friendly and helpful. It's not a big place, so it can get crowded at times. They also aren't open super late, so definitely plan around that. GREAT ice cream here! We were in this neighborhood and saw "malts" which you rarely find any more. So had to get some. My wife got a strawberry malt and I got the vanilla one. Both SO good! The guy serving us (think he was the owner) heard my wife say we need to get our little dog Cashew a pup serving as it's our adoptive 1-year anniversary day with him. My wife picked out the dark cherry ice cream and the guy said, "Here, free for your dog." That was very nice of him. My wife took a little tiny taste off the top of it and said it was SO good, she's getting that flavor next time. After feeding this to Cashew and him smashing his face into the cup not coming up until it was gone, my wife had me carry him back into the shop with her carrying the empty cup. When the guy looked up to see what we needed, my wife said to him, "SUCCESS!" He burst into laughter and held out a napkin smiling ear to ear, so we could clean Cashew's ice cream drenched chin. The guys at the counter were super friendly and happy in a genuine way, not an over the top way. I asked for their opinion between burger and cheesesteak and they said definitely burger. I went for the mushroom burger and it was piled high with tasty grilled mushrooms, bacon and cheese. This is a really nice sized burger, totally worth the money. I only beef is that maybe the bread was toasted a little too much but slathered a bit of mayo on it and solved that very minor problem. The fries were the real star for me. I can't believe how dang good they are! I haven't had french fries that good anywhere in the San Diego area. I asked them for a little bit of ranch to go with them for dipping and they gave us four little containers full. The ranch was homemade, which is my kryptonite and they didn't even charge for them. The interior of the diner is super cute, classic 50s style Americana. It was sparkling, clean and well organized. Bathroom was nice and clean too, which is always something I look at! Classic malt shop is one of the best eating experiences I've had. Walking in for the first time I was greeted with such positive energy. The burgers are some of the best burgers I've had around the area and their malts are phenomenal. I visited at least 4 times in the span of a week cuz of how good this place is. There aren't many places you can get the diner vibe at anymore so this spot being here is nice. Some days you'll even see a car show outside with local old school clubs visiting.
