We heard about the Golden Horseshoe BBQ from an article in the Toronto Star. We enjoy real BBQ so for my birthday we drove in from Brampton. Located in a restored 1929 Bank, you order your smoked meats by the fraction of a pound (think Deli) I wanted a sampling of all I could, so tried the Brisket, Pork Ribs, Pork Belly Burnt Ends and Charro Beans, while my wife tried the Lone Star Platter (brisket, sausage (made in house), coleslaw). Ohhh, what a treat to enjoy authentic BBQ. The Charro Beans were exceptional with a Tex-Mex direction far above the usual baked beans down in the states. Kris the Chef (co-owner) came by the table and introduced himself and invited us to visit the BBQ Pit. At the Pit we meet up with the Pitmaster Andrew (also co-owner), where he wrangles 3 pits with a blend of hardwoods. They grew their business organically from the passion of BBQing. Was super excited to try this place after stalking them on social media for months. Finally had a chance to take a friend here for their birthday. First off, the location is a bit out of the way at Christie and Dupont. I don't ever stop here for anything as it's a drive through area. Staff inside are super nice and fun. Enjoyed interacting with them. When we got there, they were out of burnt ends. It was 5:30pm for reference. We had the following: Mac and cheese: good but not spectacular. Coleslaw: average. Chilli: nice and more premium than the average chilli. Pork ribs: one of the highlights. Tender, fall off the bone. Tasted good. Cheese sausage: excellent. My favourite of the day. Andouille: not my cup of tea. Pulled pork: also nice. I'm not a fan of pulled pork but this was good. Brisket: average. Really wanted to love this. Not bad. Just not amazing. Didn't ask for meat from the point and regretted it. Pastrami: delicious and nice. Ask for meat from the point. Overall, it's solid but not spectacular. BOTTOM LINE: Hard to find good BBQ in town, but this place hits the spot. Before venturing to Golden Horseshoe, the only other BBQ place in town I enjoyed was Cheery Street. I came by on a random weekday night with no lines (or even that many patrons - it was during a cold spell in town), and didn't realize that there'd been all this hype just a few months ago with lineups around the block! This gave me a chance to chat with the pit master and the manager, who were both super chill. While their offerings aren't exactly cheap, I was impressed by the quality of what I tried. The BRISKET is basically a must-try, and a litmus test of any BBQ joint worth their salt. I'm pleased to say it was moist and tender, and the fat was rendered well! The RIBS were next, and it was fall-off-the-bone delightful, while still maintaining a meaty texture. Ordered some sides of the FRIED BEANS and CORN BREAD, and while I liked both, I think their beans deserve an extra shout out! Also, as a total unexpected surprise - I'd also recommend getting their BAKED COOKIES, which to my understanding, the owner's mother bakes herself with some top-shelf chocolate sourced from France (ooh la la!). I'm a Beach Hill Smokehouse regular so trust me, Golden Horseshoe Barbecue is just as good maybe even better. Beach Hill to me seems more hit and miss as they are expanding by franchising. Golden Horseshoe's pit master is onsite and he seems to care. Beach Hill is salter and fattier hence juicier. Golden Horseshoe gives complementary pickles, pickled onions and beef tallow bread. Sausage is what stands out. On street parking is the problem, we parked 2 blocks away. Service was top notch. read more

Had an ultimate meat nirvana experience at Golden Horseshoe. Wanted to try once they announced two specials! Smoked Pastrami Brisket( I picked fatty instead of lean) - texture, quality & thickness was just done right. It was a heaven in my mouth once assembled with mustard, pickled cukes & onion on a piece of rye bread. Char Siu Pork Belly Burnt Ends.The best Char Siu glaze I have ever had. Not overly sweet and nice hint of hoisin sauce. It was a perfect match with smoked belly. If you are a pickles lover, get more pickles!!! They are excellent! Thanks for the special memu! read more

When we heard there was a new barbecue joint supposedly offering up authentic Texas BBQ, it was just a matter of time before we showed up to eat some meat. We arrived a few minutes after they opened on a recent Saturday and the place already had a fairly significant lineup, to the point where it took a full half hour to order and get our food. I'd say it was worth the wait, though. We decided to share a platter with brisket, sausage, beans, and coleslaw. While I can't say any of the items knocked my socks off, everything was very well prepared and quite tasty. The lack of smoke in the brisket was a disappointment, however, although it wasn't a surprise. I've never managed to find a place in the GTA that sells the kind of deeply smoky barbecue they do in the southern United States. Still, the brisket was super tender and the sausage was packed with flavor. The beans and slaw were decent but nothing to write home about, ultimately. The ribs looked phenomenal, so I assume we'll be returning at some point to try those. read more

While this texas bbq joint didnt completely corral me, I get why lots of people lineup for and love it. The Good: Pork ribs were fall off the bone tender and tasty. The brisket had a good smoke. The cornbread had the perfect melted butter on top that soaked its crumbliness well. The key lime pie was tasty tarty and crusty. The mustard sauce they had on the table was amazing. The Meh: The sausage was a bit tough. The pork belly burnt ends were a bit too fatty. The side beans and corn were ok. The lines are long, but it serves quicker than how it looks. Most seating is counter, though there are some booths. Prices are what prices are these days. Overall, a good spot if you want good bbq. read more

The place has a line up from open to close. We were there at 1230 and they ran out of smoked chicken. We ordered the ribs and pork belly. It was very good, service mess excellent. The corn salad has a little bit of a kick. It's wasn't bbq gasm, but it was darn good and worth returning to. read more

Golden Horseshoe BBQ - the good, the bad, and the ugly: the good - the pickles/pickled onion, wet wipes at the table. honestly, if the person responsible for the pickling wanted to package and sell their pickles, i would be first in line to buy them. any self-respecting BBQ joint is going to have wet wipes at the table, but it's somewhat rare to find a good pickle on the platter. the bad - literally everything else. * the sausage was overcooked and had zero jalapeño flavour. the bottom of the pile inexplicably had the driest slices. * the brisket was simultaneously dry and disgustingly greasy. it had a weak smoke ring only around only three sides, the fourth had none. * the pulled pork was simply mush. it was the only item on the platter with any moisture, which was a nice change of pace, but it was so lacking in flavour and texture that it wasn't even worth the effort to load up your fork. * the burnt ends were vile, both texturally and in terms of flavour. the only flavour in them was salt, and way too much of it. the ends were rock hard and nearly inedible. * the mac and cheese didn't taste like cheese was even in the kitchen when it was made. it contained a weak béchamel at best, and once again wasn't even worth the effort to eat. * the slices of bread served with the platter were also dry, almost stale to the touch. * the cornbread was okay, it was more like a corn cake but it at least had a bit of moisture to help replace what the meats had taken from me. the little dollop on top was funky tasting and added nothing to the experience. * the biscuit was inedible. i get wanting to try something new and inventive, but the seasonings throughout were overwhelming and the biscuit itself was hard as a rock. if you're going to make a biscuit, maybe focus on making a good biscuit before trying to mix it up. * perhaps the most heartbreaking part of this whole ordeal is that the restaurant touts Texas BBQ... so i feel it's not unreasonable to expect a good BBQ sauce. the two sauces on the table were a thin honey mustard (i assume their attempt at a South Carolina BBQ sauce?), and a Texas style sauce without any of the Texas flavour. TL;DR - the meats were either under or over salted, all of them were overcooked, they had virtually no flavour aside from salt and beef/pork, and the one thing you expect a BBQ joint to do well (the sauce!!!) was an affront to pitmasters everywhere. The ugly - lack of seating, a woefully disorganized counter experience, and the prices of everything are not reflected in the execution. I fear that I have fallen victim to influencer hype with this one. It was just Not Good in any way; so much so that we only made it halfway through the platter before giving up and feeding the rest to the garbage. Maybe they were having an off day and this was just a fluke? For their sake I hope so, but I can assure you I won't be back to find out. read more
