This was a quaint little place and it had so much charm. Love the new pre check in models and check outs as they are quick and easy. The staff was friendly and efficient in the check in process too. They have popcorn, water and coffee in the common area of the lobby and traveler maps, rack cards for sightseeing, etc. Appreciated the fact that the outdoor pool was heated and saltwater to boot! The rooms has a nice vintage fridge and microwave. The beds were very plush (if you like a firm mattress this will not be your favorite; think memory foam that you melt into. The shower was very hot and I like a warm one so that was nice for me, but those with sensitivity to heat will want to err or the side of cooler! read more

One night here was $220+ via Hotels.com....total, absolute ripoff. They call this a resort and it is nothing more than a roadside motel with a tiki bar attached. Rooms are threadbare and sparsely furnished. Flatscreen on the wall with no guide/explanation of the local channels or cable ones. No breakfast included for the $220+ either. Crappy cheap linens in bathroom and on the bed (hey: at least they ain't rubber sheets). Other inclusions: tiny little bottles of shampoo, gel and conditioner as "amenities." Poor quality single serve coffee packets and the world's smallest coffee maker too. One other observation: room smelled faintly of cheap marijuana too. Mattress was about as soft as they get. I almost thought I was sleeping on a bowl of oatmeal...They need to change it out for a new, firm one that wasn't made in 1999. The only positive that I can offer is that the room was clean (albeit worn around the edges), no bugs, and it served the purpose of being here overnight after an evening at the opera. I wasn't about to shell out $400+ to stay in downtown Sarasota Something tells me that the gypsy camp from Il Trovatore would've been more hospitable and comfortable. If these people wanna call this joint a resort, then I'd hate to see what a Motel 6 looks like in THEIR world. That even includes the small, forlorn pool in the middle of the property too. At least the small fridge and microwave were cute! Fridge was nice and cold for the leftover pizza from dinner last night. Other good thing was that the shower had decent water pressure so I could wash off the cheap-motel-vibe grime in the morning. That's about as much positivity as I can offer about this "resort." They further claim the "resort" as "newly renovated." Well, I'd hate to see what this place looked like previously. Meanwhile, do yourself a favor: if you MUST stay here, then close the potty door, or you'll be disturbed by the outside lights shining thru the frosted window...and don't forget to lock your car. The only good thing about this place is the tiki bar. Other than that, staying here was one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a so-called "resort." Do not let the name fool you. This is definitely a motel. The biggest issue was the complete lack of privacy. We asked the front desk for a Do Not Disturb sign and were told they didn't have any, which was already concerning. They said they would notify housekeeping instead. Despite that, housekeeping entered our room every single day of our stay. We even spoke directly to the cleaning staff and clearly asked them not to go into our room, but our request was ignored. At one point, one of my bags had been opened, which made me extremely uncomfortable. Guests should be able to trust that their belongings and personal space will be respected when staying at an establishment. When we brought this up, the manager blamed it on a language barrier because the staff speaks Spanish. That explanation did not make sense. I also speak Spanish, and we communicated our request clearly. Regardless, the front desk should have properly informed the staff. To make matters worse, my tire was slashed after running over glass in the parking lot, or possibly intentionally. It is unclear what exactly happened, but we had to replace the tire during our vacation. When we reported it, the manager showed little concern about the glass in the parking lot, which is a serious safety hazard for guests. Overall, I would absolutely not recommend staying here. We stayed here for a few days. The house keeping was nice and respectful. Came in daily to switch towels and that was it. And the bartenders are so sweet! The pool however was cloudy and had a tint so we didn't get to swim but the area around the pool was super cute and relaxing! Our room was good as we weren't in it much due to being out and exploring the area of Sarasota. It was clean enough inside, though they could probably wipe the walls down a bit more and the night stand side as it looked like something red running down it (hopefully it was pizza sauce and not blood!?) we wiped it and it came off somewhat easy but still there. Watch which reviews you listen to though as they ask friends and family on FB to basically drown out the reality of the posts! This was our first time staying here and the rooms were clean, but not as fresh looking as they look in the pictures. There is no restaurant though they advertise that they have one, but supposedly one is going in Saturday the 7th of March. If I had to stay there again, I would, but it wouldn't be my first choice, but it's served a purpose. Now the tiki bar that would be a reason I would stay because at first we walked in and thought it's all right, but the two bartenders that worked on Thursday night made us feel so comfortable and had us laughing-that I would go there again and again so they would be the only reason I would stay at this hotel again. Also, the neighborhood was a bit dodgy which doesn't make you feel too comfortable. They have laundry service, but you have to go do your own laundry. Use a card to pay and it's in the last building upstairs same with the ice machine. Only one building has an ice machine all the others you have to get it from the office or the bar when it's open. It is the oldest tiki bar in Florida established in 1959. I gave this place three stars because of the two bartenders that work Thursday night. read more

Also loved that they gave you a free drink ticket per guest to go to the connected tiki bar. Had a great time at the bar. Surprised there were actually people there on a Monday night. Five drinks later - there were just so many that sounded good and tasted good - I almost forgot I had walked over and told my friend I can't drive back lol. I was very happy to be reminded we walked! Truth be told, we're not crazy about going to Florida. First there's the heat. Then there's the hurricanes. Also the seemingly disproportionate number of angry white guys who may also be drunk and carrying firearms. And then there's alligators. Florida can be scary. We need to be in Sarasota at least four times a year. And Golden Host is a safe, comfortable respite, conveniently located just minutes from the airport and just a few minutes from the downtown dining and arts scene of Sarasota.  We discovered it last year and just booked our fourth stay. It's a home away from home. If your home requires a vintage tiki bar. (Ours does.) Golden Host is on Tamiami Trail, but the fence and the savannah of palms combine to make it secluded and peaceful. And being right on Tamiami means we can get pretty much everywhere fast and easy. The rooms are mid-century retro and clean as a whistle. We really appreciate not having carpeted floors in a hotel because carpet is gross. The entire property is tremendously cool, but it's not so cool you feel like you have to be really cool yourself. The staff is wonderfully accomodating, and Carmen runs things with efficiency and warmth. Need an extra towel, and they'll be on it in a flash. We also love that we can text questions or feedback and get a fast response.  No breakfast on-site, but there are grocery stores nearby and good sized refrigerators in every room. Book direct to get the best price and coupon for a free cocktail to take the edge off your travel day. It really seems like Golden Host is focused on making everything as easy as possible for your stay in Sarasota. There's even a taco truck regularly doing business in the parking lot. So even if your beach plans are foiled by red tide, you could do your whole vacation right at the hotel and do just fine. Tacos, tiki bar, beautiful pool, and swaying palms. THIS IS AN UNSAFE, UNRESPONSIVE, LOUD & DIRTY MOTEL. The two most basic things to look for in a hotel are whether it's clean & safe. The Golden Host in Sarasota Florida failed borth. I stayed overnight on 4/25/25. I first waited 20 minutes in an abandoned lobby before finally getting checked in. I honestly should have just left then as everything else was downhill from there. His excuse was that he was alone for the entire property and had other responsibilities and was working on laundry. I was next given a key to a room that actually HAD ANOTHER GUEST ALREADY INSIDE. I got into a brief altercation with the other guest after having walked into his room. Thank god I didn't get shot. Certainly Florida's castle doctrine would have justified it. Back at the front desk I was told that the property was sold out. I was then offered another room, somehow, to which I exclaimed that "I didn't feel safe" at the property anymore and would rather just find another hotel or sleep in my car. The associate refused to cancel my reservation and insisted that I accept another room. He wasn't apologetic in the least and didn't seem to grasp the seriousness of the situation he had just placed me in. I did ultimately accept the alternate room and requested that a manager contact me the next day. After literally retreating to my room to shelter in place it became immediately obvious to me that the hotel wasn't as advertised. The pool and adjacent tiki hut looked awesome, but I was in town so briefly that using it was impossible. The historic Bahi Hut was merely an open air bar situated in their parking lot. The room smelled of mold and had visible mold on the floor and walls of the shower. The laminate flooring was buckling and there was missing molding along the wall. Trash was already in my trash can. The mattress was poor quality and enveloped my body in an undesirable way. The air conditioner sounded like jet planes were flying overhead. The noise was so loud, sleeping was next to impossible. At one point I was convinced that actual airplanes were flying overhead and googled the airport to see how far away we were. The seals around my door had failed and I could see daylight the next morning. I could also smell the noxious odor of another guest smoking outside her room a few doors down. The smoke was actually coming into my room somehow. Not that any of this would have been acceptable, but the hotel was advertised as "completely restored and renovated in 2022" which I would absolutely dispute. There was no overnight security and the property seemed otherwise abandoned except for a few guests. I got a call from the management at 7:30 am the next day. If I wasn't an already pissed off guest I'm sure that getting a call at 7:30 am would do it. I hung up and followed up with Expedia later in the day. Expedia tried to contact the hotel on my behalf in order to seek a resolution. I was requesting a full refund but would have been happy with anything partial as long as it included a sincere apology from management. After 5 calls Expedia gave up and indicated that the property was unreachable. They emailed and left voicemails and days later still haven't heard back. After failing to get an answer through Expedia I decided to look up the hotel's general manager and ownership information. I contacted Katrina Swaney, the General Manager on her cell phone. She was busy and promised to return my call. Katrina never did call me back. After waiting a week for a reply I sent both Katrina and Parth Shaha, the property owner an email. My email provided some details about my experience and requested a full refund. The first reply Katrina sent she apologized for my experience and that she takes my concerns seriously. She also referred to my email as threatening and disrespectful. Ultimately her second reply declined to compensate me in any manner and I wholeheartedly feel that she failed to understand how thoroughly she and her entire team screwed up and almost got me killed. I travel regularly for work and over the past few years I've stayed at over 100 hotels throughout Florida for a night here or there. Clean & safe. Clean & safe. It's a low bar to set and represents the most basic needs of all other hotel guests. The Golden Host isn't clean. The Golden Host isn't safe. Management isn't responsible. Seriously, unless you're just dying to drink a Mai Tai in a tiki hut in some motel parking lot... find anywhere... literally ANYWHERE else to stay. Don't go here. Ever. read more

Arrived late for a 4 night stay because of plane delay along with family members in a room nearby. Immediately entered the room had a strong bleach smell which was very uncomfortable to sleep but dissipated by morning. The next day after returning to the room the bleach smell was back. I went to the front desk and told Kat this smell was making me sick, the room phones didn't work and my AC was not working. Kat explained phones hadn't worked since the hurricane, she would tell housekeeping not to clean the room but provide towels which they did not. I had to go get them each day. Kat did come fix the AC and was very responsive. The 2nd night an adjacent guest was screaming from 1-4 am. We went to the lobby at 3am and were told the screaming guest was checking out in the morning. How nice for the rest of us! We complained to Kat before check out and was told management would contact us. Kat was nice and assured us this wasn't the norm but we never heard from management. I spent the night here, as a way to avoid early morning travel on the way to an event. I found them on a 3rd party booking site, but know now if I book direct with them, they give you 25% off and a free drink at the oldest tiki bar in Florida! The company has an online check in policy as they are paperless, except for their paper car parking permits. Yosemite was awesome!!and in a 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon sort of way, we know people together! Anyway, he was really helpful and made sure I had a nice room. My only complaint was that it smelled musty and it was in need of a paint job, other than that, the bed was super comfy.nonw side has obviously been a favorite as it is more broken in and the other side is far firmer and I absolutely loved that. The pool area was stunning. Not currently open due to it being chilly. I suppose I could have braved temps, but I'm not that girl. The cabanas, the benches, it really was a paradise and there was a bar as well as a performance area. That's awesome. Live music was playing Bahi Hut, the tiki hut that has been around since 1954, and it sounded great from my balcony. This is an older, renovated property.it is the drive up style popularized in the 1950's and 60's. They have renovated it and embraced the kitsch and it works! I would certainly stay here again. I was given an email to cancel, and that email was returned undeliverable. I found another email address for them and there was no response. It is nothing other than a discount motel and health hazard with completely deceiving pictures, at a price that is WAY more than what it should be. This is a ZERO STAR review. DO NOT NOT STAY HERE!! This hotel is ran by thieves. The rooms are not what they look like online. They are dirty and smell of smoke and mold. The whole site, photos, etc is false advertisement because it is no where near a resort feel or look. It is closer to a baits motel feel and look. Motel 6 are better than this place and Ive used port potties better then this place. Short story: My husband and I book a two night stay here in June from Friday to Sunday. When we got there the lobby is the only nice thing. We checked in and was given our 1st room the room dirty and smelled very bad (it was also next to the hut bar that was loud). After going back to the reception we were given another room in the back but it was the same issue. We were told that we were going to get a refund and never received it for a stay we did not do. We needed a last minute hotel for one night and it's in the middle of spring break so everything was super expensive until we came across this place on our travel package. We checked in late but the front desk guy was extremely nice and checked us in quickly. Upon entering our room it was extremely hot upon checking out the thermostat we discovered someone had I'm assuming accidentally turned on emergency heat once it cool enough off though the air worked great. Despite it being outdoor rooms they have been upgraded on the inside. Super cute refrigerator and microwave. Single serve coffee maker as well. Shower was good and hot could have had more pressure. They only give you 2 pillows for a king bed would have liked another pillow. Sheet had a stain so that was a tad off putting. For the 90$ price we paid it was a good deal and made staying here worth it however I wouldn't stay here if it was full price. Also we didn't get to par take but they do have a nice looking pool and the oldest tiki bar in the area. read more

She listened, was profusely apologetic that no one ever called me, and said she would try and refund my night but ultimately was not able to. She did offer for me to come back and give them another chance. I appreciated that she took the time to call me despite nothing really changing. I know that was not an easy call to make especially if she really did not work there in November and was left to clean up that mess in January. If you are looking for a quick place next to walking/shopping and the beach, this 'might' be the place. Its semi-nostalgic feel might bring back some memories of a bygone era, but felt forced/kitchy. High price to pay for value received. The two bartenders were more interested in gossiping with what appeared to be locals than to serve new, paying customers. Quality of beverages served were poor. The Tiki Hut had lots of potential only to be squandered by uncaring staff. The rooms were somewhat clean, The good-plenty of hot water with sufficient water pressure The bad-room had an odd odor, linens were not fresh/clean. Stains on couch, ceiling. It was recently renovated in 2021 and hosts the first tiki bar to ever open in Florida. The hotel is from the 1950s and has a retro vibe. The tiki bar on site was nice, but that was it. The rooms were musty, the sheets were dingy and old, the renovation was not done very well. You could see light around the door and there were bugs flying around in the room. The shower was disgusting and had some sort of slime on the floor. It nothing like the pictures online. We ended up not staying because I couldn't breathe due to it being so musty. They told us we would get a refund for the second night. It's 3 weeks later and still no refund. What a great place! I originally chose it of off of travelocity for its reasonable price, but also because we like retro, as it reminds us of our youth and tends not to be as sterile-looking or compact as newer hotels. Since the hotel was built in 1958 (with pictures of the Grand Opening in the lobby), and had its most recent update in 2021, it has no problem actually being retro, with comfortable upgrades, and the rooms are big and wide. We had no trouble checking in, a staff member brought a facial tissue refill when we called, the mini-split heat pump worked great, there were lots of TV channels on the big-screen TV, etc. Not having carpet was a plus, in reality. The step-in shower has a slip-proof floor, and without a tub it's roomy. We chose the "Premium Room, 1 King Bed, Balcony/Patio Pool View" and ended up on the first floor with a small patio and pool view/easy access. The hide-a-bed sofa was actually comfortable as a sofa. There is lots of parking, near your room, motel-style. The courtyard area with the pool is nicely landscaped, and the pool temperature was "goldilocks" perfect, as the daily highs when were there in April were in the 80s. It's not far from the Sarasota/Bradenton airport, SRQ, but it's perpendicular to the runways, so there is not a lot of noise. We were at the back of the hotel, so there was not a lot of street noise, either. Note that if you make a reservation through a 3rd party, the Golden Host Resort will text you saying you could have saved 25% if you had booked directly. read more

This motel is a scam and it prevents itself as a "resort" but what it really is,. A Motel 8 bought at auction with hotel liquidators retro microwave and mini fridge SCAM trying to be a boutique 50s Hawaii surf retro tiki but it a property between 2 blighted boarded up buildings in an area with homeless, prostitution and drug addicts 30 minutes from the beach or any safe areas. We arrived to find our room dirty with a come rag hanging from the shower curtain. The room spelled like piss and mildew and mold. Filled ashtray on our patio. Bed was shaped like a bowl. It was soft and uncomfortable and unsleepable. Towels and sheets stained yellow. This is NOT a resort. It's where you bring hookers to do drugs with. Run a fast as you can away from this nightmare. Pool was gross with a watermelon on the bottom. Loud music from the tiki bar and no parking. Found a man cooking chicken out of the back of his truck in the parking lot. Disgusting. Approached by a meth addict on our way out. I need a last minute one night stay after some flight changes. We first contacted property to find out front desk hours because we would be arriving very, very late. They stated they are 24 hours. So we went ahead and booked directly. After a long day of travel we finally arrived even later than planned, 1:04am. The property was situated off a highway of a bunch of run down motels. They advertised this property as if it was an oasis. What I was about to experience was quite the opposite. We got dropped off from an uber and checked in right away. We were very tired and just wanted to get a good nice rest. To get to the room we had to walk through a dark parking lot. It was on the second level and it was the corner room facing the tiki bar. First off, when we entered the room it had a very strong unpleasant musty odor. Then we noticed dirty yellow stains on the white bed linen. Gross! Next is where I drew the line... I went to go brush my teeth before changing into something to sleep in. Suddenly a giant cockroach ran past my feet. This bug was about 2 inches in size. I was screaming! My husband ran over and seen it too. I was shaking I could barely get a photo. Also the roach was moving so fast so it was hard to capture a picture before it ran under the bed. Luckily I did take a picture. We decided to check out immediately out of the motel. We spent all of 5 minutes in the room. The front desk agent was annoyed and mean. He told us we wouldn't be getting a refund. I was pleaing to him we only spent 5 minutes in the room. I was telling him in distress there is a cockroach running around our room! Do you really think we are going to spend the night here? He didn't care. Nonrefundable! We are now stranded in Sarasota looking for a place to sleep at 1:30 in the morning. Luckily we found a reputable hotel about a mile away for $360.00. It was so expensive for a last minute stay but worth the peace of mind knowing we would be sleeping for a few hours at a clean property. Golden Host wouldn't budge for days. They charged us $220.00 dollars room fee plus $100.00 incidental and did not want to refund us. Went back and forth with different managers. They are in denial they have roaches in their rooms. They kept brushing me off the phone everytime, stating they didn't have these bugs. The staff and management are so insulting! They even emailed me and had the audacity to tell me it's not a roach and could be something similar to a mosquito. I have never ever experienced anything like this in in my life. News flash I know what a cockroach looks like! I travel all over the world. I work in the travel industry. I am a thousand percent certain! The resort really wanted to keep our hard earned money. We spent approximately 30 min in total at this property (5 min total in room) I was in another Uber within a 31 minute time frame. (1:35am) I have the photos to prove it. I feel so sorry for anyone else that books this hotel and will have to deal with anything similiar to this. This is not an oasis! This property ruined my entire weekend with their deceiving reviews and CRUEL refund policy. They eventually refunded us after going back and forth and back and forth and back and forth my entire short weekend getaway. They would only refund my husband if he didn't give them a bad review... how convenient! That's fine, HE wont review your property, BUT I AM! Do better Golden Host!!! read more

Golden Host is amazing! The old Florida decor and vibes are to die for. As soon as you walk into the wonderfully scented lobby, you feel certain that you'll experience a true Florida vacation with the utmost relaxation. If you are a fan of all things retro and vintage you will loooove this. Even if you aren't, this place is awesome. The beds are so freaking comfy! The rooms are clean, NO NASTY CARPET, it's vinyl and beautiful. The aqua mini fridge and microwave are kitschy and my mom has decided she needs a full-size fridge in that color. The bathroom is well lit and the water pressure is great. If you look back on road trips with your grandparents and pine for the motel experience you had with them, this is it. Book online and get drink vouchers for the tiki bar. The tiki hut is a must, Celeste, the bartender is friendly and helpful. They are renovating rooms, so you might encounter construction but it won't interfere with your stay. read more

Everything was great! We will definitely be staying here again. Everything went smoothly from check in to exit. All of the staff was very friendly and you could tell took pride in the establishment and their work. I checked in and out with a super nice woman with braids, I wish I got her name. Everything was very clean and the beds were big and comfortable. The vintage appliances were adorable. The live music was great. I only wish I could stay longer! I stayed here back in august and loved it! Everyone was so nice! The room was clean and spacious. The bathroom was surprising bc there's no tub but the shower with the rock tiles was a vibe. I had a first floor room so the sliding door opened right up to the pool. I didn't go into the water but I used one of the cabanas to lounge and read and it was so relaxing! I did get to meet two baby lizards in my room lol but it's Florida so to be expected. Writing this review because I was just remembering my time there. If I'm ever back in Sarasota 1000% staying here! read more

Oof...booked this hotel to visit the Bali Hut, the oldest tiki bar in Florida. My hubby is a tiki bar aficionado. The bar was somewhat of a disappointment, but the hotel was a mess. Literally a mess. Dirty. For what we paid to stay there, we could have been in a much nicer place. We do want to give a shoutout to Rhani (pronounced like a rainy day) who was actually a real ray of sunshine for the whole experience. If you go, ask for her, but stay somewhere else. read more

Room #122 was disgusting. It had a bad busty, mildew smell. Be looked as though it had been used and then made up quickly. The pillow and top cover were stained and both had hair on them. The bathroom was also disgusting. The toilet seat was not mounted. The shower walls were dirty and had hair. The shower floor was disgusting looking. We tried to get another room but was told none were available. They gave us a clean set of linen, but we would have had to change them ourselves. For $160 a night that I was charged. There was no way I was going to clean the room in order to stay in it. My booking company tried to get the motel to refund our money, but the management refused. We ended up leaving and ended up staying the night with a relative. See photos to see what this motel gives for $160 per night. I stayed here Thursday the 17th of October. Stayed here when we had to evacuate during recent Idalia. It was clean and efficient for our 24 hour stay. Room had retro-looking mini-fridge and microwave. Staff was very friendly and responsive to all our special requests. read more

It was fine. It looks better in the pictures, and calling it a "resort" is a bit of a stretch. But the place was clean and the bed was comfortable. The tiki bar on the premises is kinda cool but their signature Mai Tai is basically rum and fruit punch, indistinguishable from a mass produced hurricane you might get in New Orleans read more
