Excellent flavors! I first tried their beef patties about 20 years ago when I worked at the VA in East Orange. The canteen sold them and I was instantly impressed. About 15 years later, they opened a spot just a mile from my house. At first, they had some growing pains so I ghosted for a few years. Recently, a friend told me they'd eaten there and liked it, so I figured why not?! For lunch, hubs and I shared a Spicy Beef Patty, a Curry Chicken Patty, and a Curry Goat Roti. Everything came out tasty, hot, and fresh, especially the roti, which came in a clamshell container. The roti was flaky and comforting, kind of like a Jamaican take on a chicken pot pie but with way more personality. Inside, the curry goat was ridiculously good. It had slow-cooked depth, tender meat, potatoes, and carrots and a layered sauce that tasted like turmeric, other warm spices, and a touch of smoke. It was fucking delicious! While there were a lot of bones (it's goat, after all), there was still a ton of meat and it fed me twice. This place is fast casual. You might have to wait up to twenty minutes for some dishes, but that time buys you flavor. I'm officially back on board. That curry goat roti? If you want Jamaican breakfast food they got it! I often want ackee and saltfish and callaloo and salt fish and plantain. And that's what you see. They also have dumpling, boiled banana and fried dumpling as well if that's what you want. I've also seen them carry okra and saltfish I believe but I'm not a fan of okra. The ackee and saltfish is amongst my favorite. Right alongside the callaloo and saltfish. They give nice size portions for the price and it's delicious. Not too salty. And it I is a little oily but not a lot. There are also small small bones in some of the pcs of saltfish as well. Overall, every chance I get to eat this from here I do! Give it a try. read more

Came here for lunch with a work proximity associate. The location is huge for what it is. It's casual slow food fast. I got the goat curry with rice and peas. I went to Golden Krust Caribbean restaurant today for the first time and was not disappointed. I had the curry chicken my son had the barbecue chicken. they put extra gravy on the rice. The food was delicious. The staff was friendly. The establishment was clean I also got the oxtail dinner for my husband. He was impressed with the quality and quantity of the portion. I also got Saltfish fritters and bun with cheese. Everything was delicious the bun was moist. I had a hankering for oxtail last night and came here not thinking much of it. To be honest, these might have been in the top 3 oxtail dishes I've ever had. This was a good idea for the location/ Rt 22 Union area. No other Caribbean spots in the area. This spot is Jamaican as per the cashier. This place just opened up within the last several weeks. Today was the 1st time I came to check it out. Parking lot is small especially when half the spaces are designated for the other store next door. There was a line to order which I figured. Handicap friendly with a ramp , two bathrooms inside and a dining area to eat after you order on line/pay. Inside is yellow and bright which gives a nice energy. Also clean but it's still new - hopefully patrons won't ruin that Menu is over the cashier desk . Hard to read. Menu says small or large sizes but I over heard someone order a "mini" which would be a good size for m me but I didn't see that option on the menu . There was a good selection of entrees .... I ordered a "small" ox tail - but it's a HUGE portion. Comes with rice and peas, cabbage and plantains. It's HUGE. Oxtail and peas and rice was pretty good. The cabbage is more of a colder raw cabbage versus the more warm cooked cabbage I've seen in other Jamaican restaurants ( see my pix) . Plaintains are bland/ok. The small came out to $13-14 bucks . Although a lot but would rather have the choice to get something smaller and cheaper than $10- so next time I will ask about the "mini" They also have desserts, juices/tropical juices to order as well as different selections of Jamaican patties. I would come back to try the jerk chicken and the beef patties so right now I will give 4 stars They have some things they should work on to make the visit better.: 1. Have another menu at the start of the line so that people on line can figure out better what they want once it's their turn to give the server your order. 2. Also they should have the names of posted with what is shown ( for people who may not be experienced with Jamaican food) . 3. Hours of operation need to be posted 4. Menu needs to be more clear of what comes with the entree for example ....rice and 2 sides? What are the sides? Etc . Kept eye-ing this place to see when it would open. Finally saw the now open sign today. Yay! Nice and clean inside and very friendly staff. Got the oxtails/rice and beans/plantain togo and woooww huge portions. Definitely could share the large with someone. Food is delicious! Rice and beans to die for. Oxtails were tender. Plantains eh I like my latin maduros better. Now lets talk about the patties! O.m.gee perfecto! I was bold enough to try a shrimp patty and it did not disappoint. Great filling to bread ratio. Honestly, of all the Golden Krusts I've been to, this is HANDS DOWN, The BEST one. The food is always delicious and portion size is unbeatable. I'm so glad they decided to open this restaurant in Union because there's barely and Jamaican/Caribbean places in this area. If you love Jamaican food or never had it, I promise you won't be disappointed. My go to is either the small oxtail meal or the jerk shrimp. Ugh I could literally eat both of them on rotation every day. The oxtail fall off the bone and the shrimp are perfectly juicy. Hit or miss. The curried goat with plaintains, rice & beans, and cabbage was great. The patties were hideously awful. We got chicken, beyond meat, and cheesy beef, but you couldn't tell the difference between the fillings - they all were a grey mush that tasted like refried beans. The crusts of the patties were even worse -- stale dough so hard it was difficult to bite into. And somehow the crust had a weird bitter aftertaste. The cashier/service is bottom shelf, but the food is a step above most of Union. The oxtail has some type of powdered sauce but works.

I kept it simple with the spicy beef patty and coco bread. And it was everything I expected, anticipated and have no complaints. They had other food that looked interesting and potentially good but I ONLY come to golden crust for the pattys. However I was slightly intrigued and may possibly try something else on another visit. I will say I like how clean the establish was and how the service was professional and prompt. So no complaints and would recommend this spot to others. read more

I've gone to this G.K. many times and had great experiences. The food is good and I have no problems with it. My issue is the service I received this Sunday 10/29/23. I entered the restaurant to buy a patty. There were people in front of me, but they were getting food from the buffet, so I went to the register to pick up a quick patty. I've done this before with no problems. When I get to the register the two women who are there don't greet me, give me eye contact, or acknowledge my presence. That was fine as I figured they were finishing up duties or other responsibilities. I waited patiently and pleasantly but they continued to ignore me. One woman left the register to get bags while the other began to clean the counters and sweep. It was at this point that I knew they were purposely ignoring my presence. So at that point I wasn't going to buy anything but I stood there a few more seconds to give them a chance to address me. Still nothing... So I left but before I exited I looked back to see if they noticed me, and one of the women (it appeared to me) did look back. As consumers we make intentional decisions to support restaurants. I could've gone anywhere yet I chose to go there. I'll give them another chance but I felt compelled to leave this review. As a place that delivers customer service we MUST do better. read more

I visited the location on rt22 in union nj today because I saw the big poster says Lunch Specials!!! Im like great because I don't eat much anyway. I ordered the curry chicken lunch special and asked the server for the spinach rice instead of rice and peas. She immediately stated it will be extra. I said ok. I then looked at the menu and a side of spinach rice is $3.50. I'm thinking ok it will probably be $1-1.50 extra to replace the peas and rice. Lo and behold when the cashier proceeded to ring it up...she input lunch special and side of spinach rice. I asked her why I'm charged for a side when I just replaced the peas and rice. I said then you should be also giving me the peas and rice that comes with it since I'm paying for an extra side! Of course she didn't understand and I'm never going again! Don't let the outside fool you!! Plenty of parking and it's right on the main highway. When you come in there is a station of food and you pick. They have a variety of traditional choices. I had the oxtail and THEY ARE NOT STINGY WITH PORTIONS! This was a small order I had I can't imagine how the large would look! Pricing is very reasonable with the amount of food they give. The prices are too high, I've paid less in Jamaican Restaurants that are cooked to order. Their parties are ok but they dont come out HOT like they are "warm" like they have been sitting out in the heated light for a while. I went with the classic curry goat, rice & red beans and cabbage along with my fav Kola Champagne (staying away from the Ginger Beer because I thought my esophagus had disintegrated when I attempted to last drink it). The food buffet is amazing - can't believe that I used to only get the beef and spicy chicken patties from here. By the way, when I asked for Cocoa Bread to go with the meal - the associate taking my order looked at me as if I had three heads. Just tried this place and it was shockingly good for a chain restaurant. It's better than all of the other Jamaican spots in the area. I ordered a small meal but it's still large enough for 2 ppl to share. The workers are friendly, efficient and had great recommendations. I also ordered 5 dozen cocktail veggie and beef patties last minute for a party and they accommodated me expeditiously. I had the jerk chicken with rice and beans and steamed cabbage. (oxtail gravy on the rice...yum) The barbecue wings seem like a popular item. I will definitely be trying that on my next visit. The soups also seemed popular. Just moved to Plainfield from the Bronx and passed this on Rt 22. Decided to stop in for breakfast. It was clean and empty at 9am on a Friday. I went with the banana and peanut porridge. It was smooth but just too sweet. Went again same day for dinner. Ordered the lunch curry chicken it was good. Chicken was moist and flavorful. Nice portion. The patties are also good. Not dry or lackluster. HOWEVER I also ordered a small jerk chicken. The entire meal was ruined by dry sage or whatever seasoning they use but it was inedible because all you kept biting on was the sage that you couldn't swallow. The Jerk Chicken was also extremely dry. Because the other dishes were good I'll try then again but if it's another round of inedible food I won't come back read more

it is possible that Golden Krust chicken soup is the best soup of any kind anywhere that I have ever tasted. I've eaten so many kinds of food in so many countries that I was sure I could think of a comparable soup somewhere. Several restaurants in Southern California make a Menudo (tripe stew) that is high on my list. Nothing, though, approaches the extraordinary Golden Krust chicken soup. They give ample portions and the prices are fair. I opted to get curry chicken. It was a pretty good I would say they could go a little heavier on the curry to add more kick. I worked in Brooklyn for many years and was associated with many different types of ethnic foods. I really enjoy going to the Golden Krust on route 22. The food is always fresh and the ladies their are great especially Debbie who always makes me welcome. I always try to time my shopping trips to route 22 around lunch time so I can grab my favorite brown stew with rice and peas and cabbage. Since I retired I missed my usual haunts in Brooklyn but my cravings for Caribbean has now been satisfied. Now I have to find a good Puerto Rican place close to homes to get some pernil. read more

I am very disappointed! I was here months ago and the food was good. I went two nights ago and the food was horrible. I ordered a large oxtail dinner ($18.82) with rice & peas, cabbage, and plantains. The oxtails was very rough I couldn't chew the meat, I couldn't give my 4 year old some in fear she might choke. Asked my friend to try to make sure I wasn't bugging and he agreed the meat was rough. The cabbage was hard like they cut it up and brought it out instead of letting it simmer, you couldn't chew it either. The rice and plantains was okay that's the reason for the second star. Never even got back to me, calling me to let me know why they wiped out( cancelled) my order! Never going back to them again!
