This is a hidden gem in a shabby part of Durham. So far, I have tried goat curry, oxtail, and chicken curry. Food comes with side rice, vegetables (mainly steamed cabbage), and two plantain pieces. did not like oxtail (too expensive ~11$ and too fatty), but loved goat (~$9) and chicken curry (~$8). Note 1: Be careful of small bones in the curry. Note 2: Food comes in small and large portions. I have a healthy appetite, and the small portion is quite ample for me. Update: I tried the jerk wings which was unremarkable and stew chicken which was tasteless. Ergo, the chicken and goat curries are the only items that I will get from this place in the future. I work very close to the Golden Krust, so I recently decided to go there for lunch one day. I had never tried Caribbean food before, so I was really looking forward to trying it for the first time. Golden Krust has a variety of meats to choose from including chicken, goat and oxtail. Since this was my first time here I went with the jerk chicken plate. It also included rice and plaintains and was a generous portion. I really liked the flavor of the jerk chicken. They actually served the sauce on the side for you to dip the chicken in, the chicken itself to me was a little bit dry. They gave you three options for which type of rice you wanted with your chicken. I sort of wish I had ordered the red beans and rice, but I found my rice to be okay. I did enjoy the two fried plantains that came with the meal. Overall I found the food to be good, but not outstanding. For the price (a little over $10 after tax), I am not sure I would go out of my way to come back here, but if I was looking for a quick lunch choice, I might be willing to try it out again. read more

Really great Jamaican food from this chain restaurant. I usually order the dinner portions of the brown stew chicken or curried goat. You get so much food that it can make three meals. In addition to the protein, it comes with a choice between two rice sides (I always order the chick and pea rice), fried plaintains, and a braised cabbage side. My only caution would be as the meat is cooked falling off the bones, eat carefully and slowly. Service is quick for takeout. The best franchised Caribbean restaurant I've found. The best thing I've had so far is the oxtails. I love the gelatinous, richness of the meat and the sauce/gravy is incredible. When ordering a combo, they let you choose your rice, you get plaintains and cabbage as well. The patties are yummmm! I've had the curry chicken, jerk chicken, chee-zee beef, mild and spicy beef. I loved them all but my favorite was the curry chicken. Tip: If you order any of the meat dishes beware of bones (big & small). I personally love that they stew the meat with the bones. I'm a fan because I am so happy to find Jamaican food in a good location with ample parking! I already know this chain because there used to be one at Newark Liberty Airport where I would get dinner on my way back to NJ from the Triangle, but that one closed, and now I live here, so there we are! I particularly like the brown stew chicken. The gravy is dark and rich, the chicken is tender, and a SMALL comes with a mountain of rice and peas (or plain rice), and I get cabbage and collards, which are delicious. They also have a nice selection of Jamaican desserts (gizzada!) and right now they have Easter bun that you can buy. They also have hard dough bread! And of course, patties in various flavors (I especially like the curry chicken). I only wish they had ackee on weekends, not just Fridays...and dumpling!! Home of Jamaican immigrants in East NY where there are several authentic Jamaican Restaurants that are phenomenal. So when I put my fork into the curry chicken, jerk chicken, beef patties & coco bread, I was convinced. I had found my spot for Jamaican food that reminded me of NY. They have expanded their menu but you can get your curry goat, rice& peas, cabbage, sweet plantains ( oh those are so good), your patties, jerk chicken and deserts and drinks from Jamaica. The atmosphere puts you on the island as the reggae music plays in the background. They give you a good portion which I'm always eating just half and saving the rest. So those of us familiar with the Golden Krust brand, knows this is likened to the fast food of Jamaican food. It's the best offering that the Triangle has of its type. The negative is for the price point your serving is loaded with rice or some other food, I chose cabbage & plantains. I separated my curry goat plate to see what I paid $15 for, this same plate is over $20 for a larger serving. I don't have an issue with the price. We went based on a recommendation and was very pleased. I had the shrimp curry and he had the goat curry. The flavors were very good with a the perfect amount of spice. Both came with rice, cabbage and fried plantain (which was perfect paired with the Jamaican jerk sauce.) I stop here whenever i am in Durham visiting my daughter at Duke. Had the escovitch fish. It is not the traditional escovitch fish. The fish was deep fried but had good flavor. The onions, carrots, green peppers and pimento seeds was significantly missing the vinegar flavor. I fully understand that spice/heat is subjective and you sort of...have to accommodate to the masses but the heat that is common with this dish was not there. I did however enjoy the meal and will likely have it again (just ask for the habanero hot sauce). Staff is always friendly with a myriad of customers. My husband and I love Golden Krust! The steamed vegetables are the best we have ever tasted. The plantains are delicious and the rice and peas are also good. Love the food, the patties, the rice, the meats are all great. The portions are typically generous. I love the varieties of patties available and their curry dishes are excellent. I haven't tried any of their seafood preparations yet mostly because I just have favorites already. My one complaint is the decor of the venue. It could be a lot better. I had called the day the day before to reserve 6 Roti Skins. No one had done that for me but they still had to give me 6. Meanwhile, the line was reaching their door as the woman slowly attended to my order w no help. All this came to over $76 & I was very sad that I didn't feel valued as a customer or as if I should ever come back. I wasn't offered any incentive to encourage me to come again or want to come again. I passed a couple as I came in & right away they were complaining about not enough seasoning or spice as it constantly seems to be with this restaurant. It was the same when I got my food home. Not much flavor. Not much spice. My personal opinion is if a black-owned business wants to thrive...offer something to keep your customers coming back & spending money w you. Don't just take it for granted that a customer wants to spend that much money w you or they like your face so much they will feel valued. Most businesses offer something even a free drink, coupons, punch cards, or money off after so many visits. This place offered nothing, not even a free patty. Cheap Eats: Delicious Jamaican Oxtails! Looks like a fast food restaurant but serves delicious slow food. The people working there are really nice. Don't be put-off because the place is empty. It does a brisk take-out business but not so much eat-in. We are always comfortable dining in and enjoying the Jamaican music. You walk in, check out the steam table, look at menu board over the cash register, then tell the server what you would like. They serve the food in take-out boxes which is a good thing because it's too much food to eat in one sitting. We always get their excellent, fall-off-the-bone Jamaican oxtails which are served with your choice of rice (traditional 'rice and peas', yellow rice or green rice), fried sweet plantains, and sauteed cabbage. These are our favorite items; they are consistently delicious. Our son enjoys their curry goat. I tried the brown-stew chicken but was not a fan. Definitely a fast food joint with no ambiance, but surprisingly good Jamaican food here. Our party of four chowed down on Jerked Chicken and Goat Curry. Both were nicely done, slow cooked and meat falling off the bone. Very spicy but not hot. Sides included plantains and a cabbage dish, both were fresh. I love the brown stew chicken lunch special. The beef patties are very good, but not as flaky as their NYC location. They also seem to do more business in actual meals versus just patties. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but forget about the possibility of getting a dozen patties at the last minute; they just wont have them available. Went for a late Sunday afternoon lunch. There were a few other customers and one recommended the brown stew chicken which reminded him of meals back home in NY. I prefer the jerk chicken so I got the dinner combo. The chicken pieces were a decent size and were sufficiently cooked but I didn't find them to be very spicy and I must say that I can't tolerate really spicy foods. The rice and beans were mushy and the cabbage/veggie mix was bland. Fortunately I got the curry chicken sauce on my rice which punchd up the flavor. My partner got the curry chicken and enjoyed it but he agreed about the cabbage and the rice. The service was quick and the servers were polite. The decor was fresh, lively-colored and clean. This is a small reStaurant in a strip mall . I love jerk chicken and this place is all right but I would only return if I were in the area and hungry. I went here yesterday for the first time. I had the stewed chicken which was pretty good. The peas in the rice were a little hard, but overall tasty. I sampled some of my sister's curry chicken & it was delicious!! The music is a little loud, but not overbearing. I did get to hear "Tempted to Touch" by Rupee (a song I love!) My son and I had not had Golden Krust since we left New York. We found out there was a Golden Krust in Durham. It is 40 minutes from our house but well worth the trip! I got the Jerk Chicken, rice & beans, cabbage and 2 plantains. My son got the oxtails, rice & beans, cabbage and 2 plantains. It was delicious! Before we left I purchased 4 meat patties (2 jerk chicken and 2 spicey beef patties) and they were really good. My husband tasted them and said..." Not the best Jamaican food I've had. The jerk chicken was pretty dry. Spicy, but dry. The peas and rice were dry as well, though they had a good flavor. Cabbage was essentially flavorless. In my opinion it's alright if you're just really craving some Jamaican, but if you're looking for a true stewed style jerk chicken with lots of spice and flavor you aren't going to get it here.
