Curry chicken with rice and peas, mac & cheese with garlic mash for sides with corn bread.
    Robert N.

Definitely would come back here and try more food. The curry chicken with rice & peas fire(i wish the rice was a bit softer). Garlic mash potatoes flavorful & creamy, the mac & cheese is really good. The chicken is fall of the bone and juicy. The corn bread is so good I had to get another one to go and the hush puppies tasted great. It's a must to try here. Service is great, the place is clean and quiet when sitting in to eat.

My friend saw this place on TikTok and wanted to try it since we were in the area - And honestly, she had me sold at fried ribs!! We walked in and the line moved pretty quick, we were greeted by the friendly cashier who was so nice and great at making recommendations! This is a black owned business and boy have they hit mark with customer service! Love to see it!! I asked what was her favorite items on the menu and she mentioned a few things one of which was oxtail so I decided to go with that, and also ordered wings for the boy's and fried ribs to take home. They had delicious side choices and such a variety that it was hard to choose. For each meal you can choose either 1 side or two. I selected mashed potatoes, turkey greens, Mac n cheese, Candied yams. They were all delicious and the yams in my opinion were just okay, I felt like they were a little more firm than I like and were a bit under seasoned (not as sweet), however my friend loved them that way - So, I guess it depends on your palette. My friend ordered the fried ribs and a bunch of sides which were - potatoe salad, fried okra, white rice with oxtail gravy, turkey greens and the yams. She loved all her sides and stated the greens were just okay - I happened to really enjoy the greens. Listen, we sat at our table by the window and patiently waited for our names to be called. This place isn't that big, they are four seater tables and very limited room, so I can see them filling up pretty quickly on a busy night, I didn't like that they had the heat on because it gets really warm really quick in small spaces. Conversations also overlap each other as again the space is tight, but clean and efficient! "Order for Stephanie" - I grabbed my food that was staked nicely and placed in a black plastic bag, the food is served in Styrofoam to go containers but we decided to dine in cause we were hungry. I did not get to photograph the food because we all sat at that tiny table and inhaled almost all of it! The food was fresh, seasoned to perfection and just oh so delicious! The oxtail - 10/10 - Seasoned to perfection, tender fall off the bones, served over a bed of rice and beans and plantains, this was in addition to the two other sides it came with, all for about $24 which in my opinion is a steal. The fried ribs - 8/10 - These were also seasoned to perfection and served with a carolina sauce, the meat was tender and falling off the bones. $16+ tax with two sides. The fried chicken wings - 10/10 - When asked about the wings my 7yr old said "Thumbs Up Mom". - They were beautifully golden brown and fried to perfection! He also really enjoyed the mashed potatoes. We also ordered dessert, my friend had the birthday cake with sprinkles and I had the strawberry cake! Both were outstanding! I managed to take a photo of the remnants of my strawberry cake... So happy we got to try this spot out, Support this black business! Friendly staff, clean establishment, fast service, fresh delicious food that tastes like it was made with love, go get you some!

Oxtail with Rice & Peas, Candied Yams, & Baked Macaroni & Cheese...
    Tee C.

When I say they put their whole foot in this food, I mean it. (For those of you who don't understand what that means, it means the food is REALLY REALLY good). I had been craving oxtails and was at an event around the corner so I decided to pick up dinner. I had the oxtails with candied yams and Mac & cheese with rice and peas. It was amazing! It reminded me of family gatherings. The oxtails were tender and the gravy was perfect! I will definitely come back. The customer service was excellent! 10/10 definitely recommend.

This place is great! We were greeted immediately by the young lady at the front entrance. Our food was served within 10 minutes. My partner loved his oxtails and sides. The rice was a bit too spicy for him but he loved the food overall. I had Cajun catfish. It was cooked to perfection though I couldn't taste the Cajun seasoning. I loved the plantain. They were room temperature as the rest of my meal was made fresh. I'd go back!

This was AWFUL they forgot our sauces, the ribs are terrible, and the fish sandwich looked like it came from someones house.. will not order from here again. We were so excited to try and my sister couldnt even eat her ribs. It states it comes with a savory sauce drizzle and mine was supposed to come with tartar.

The Plantains were the star of the show. 10/10. Mac and cheese was sweet, and didn't give baked. Didn't really like it. Collards were just alright. This is not my first time here. First time my oxtails were soooo good. This time around not so much. I'm guessing it's just a hit or miss kinda restaurant. Not much of an ambiance but they did have a good gospel playlist and The service was really good. I loved the people working there!

I love discovering new restaurants! After getting my brows done I noticed this amazing spot. Soul food and Caribbean food in one location. They offer wings, fish, tenders, jerk chicken and so many yummy sides. Prices are very affordable and you get a lot of food for the price. Service is amazing. The food is cooked to order so call ahead or plan to wait. The food is fresh and flavorful and pretty darn good! The Mac and cheese is moist and cheesy. Just how I like it. The inside is clean and sleeked. I can't wait to try other menu items!

Service was good and young lady at the counter was welcoming and personable. She informed us of about 4 things on the menu that we couldn't order because they were out. The fried ribs being one. I appreciate her telling us ahead of time. We wanted to try the fried ribs though. We ordered the Cajun catfish w fries, fried shrimp, and chicken wings. The food was so salty I could feel my whole body swelling up. It would have been so much better and enjoyable had they been a little less heavy handed on the seasoning. If you don't mind a bit of hypertension, then you'll find the food tasty.

Food, excellent. Service, exceptional. Only 10min wait . Wish I could have given more than 5 stars!! My only complaint was eating off of a spork. Now excuse me while I squeeze into my tiny shirt as my big back has no room.

    Rochelle W.

Excellent food , atmosphere and service! I saw this place Tik Tok and Instagram. I live in Fayetteville and I had an event to attend in Durham and decided to stop by 'Vittles at the Park', best choice I could have made! Honey Siracha breaded wings (8)/crisp, tasty, Baked Mac n cheese/creamy and cheesy, Turkey Collard Greens/well seasoned ,roll...it was all Delicious! Shout out to kind, helpful with suggestions and welcoming cashier Alexis!

    Stew Chicken meal

Very disappointed in the stew chicken as I was only provided chicken back in my meal. There was way to much gravy and soggy rice and peas. The highlight was the Mac and cheese but, the yams taste like it came out of a can

Since it was our first time at Pure Soul, the host gave us drinks on the house (we got Sweet Tea, Lemonade, and Root Beer). The tea and lemonade were on the sweeter side, but I enjoyed both. My sister liked the root beer, which was from Uncle's Scott's, a local NC brand. They also offer a discount for teachers, students, and veterans. For entrees, we got the: - Drumstix plate (BBQ, buffalo, or fried- included rice and a sauce): We chose fried- it was perfectly crispy, so tasty. Couldn't choose between hot honey and honey mustard, so they gave us both, again so nice. Rice was well-cooked. - Chicago burger (grilled onions, cheddar, pickles, tangy aioli): Classic! Enjoyed this overall. - Fried fish plate (includes rice, slaw & tartar sauce): This is funny, but this dish was a bit too fishy for me lol. But crazy how well they do their vegan alternatives. - BBQ plate ("pulled pork" in a sweet BBQ sauce, served with slaw): Probably my least favorite entree, I think the pork was too sweet for me, but it did balance with the slaw. We tried a bunch of sides, which from my most to least favorites were: Soul Mac (not too cheesy), Hushpuppies (crispy outside, pillowy inside), Rob's Favorite Cornbread (so moist), Sweet Potato Fries (classic), Bilbo's Greens, Blackeyed Peas & Veggies, and Nik's Candied Yams (too sweet for me). Ambiance is nice with both indoor and outdoor seating. Lots of parking available. 10/10 would recommend!

Our son had the kids impossible burger and mac n cheese. My wife had the Soul Rolls and I had the bbq (vinegar based) plate with slaw, mac and cheese and greens. We also had 2 drumsticks. The kids plate was devoured quickly- the burger is slider-sized and comes with onion, tomato, lettuce and pickles on the side (surprisingly the veggies were untouched but I claimed the pickles). My wife said the Soul Rolls were a 10/10- crispy eggrolls stuffed with mac, greens and sweet bbq protein. My plate was good too but I wish it came with bread instead of counting it as a side. Also wish it had a little sauce on the side. Greens were seasoned well and the mac was creamy. Drumstick was amazing but a bit steep at 4 bucks each. Only criticism is that we wish the side portions were a little bigger for the price. Still won't stop us from returning in the future when in town!

From the moment we walked in, the vibe was on point. They were playing great music that made the whole place feel lively and welcoming, and I loved that you can choose to eat inside or enjoy the outdoor patio. My husband and I both ordered the Boricua Soul Bowl. He got the chicken, and I got the pernil. The pernil was incredible it was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. The bowl came with arroz con gandules, collard greens, mac and cheese, and I chose the tostones. I had honestly given up on finding good tostones that I didn't have to make myself, but these were exactly what I'd been craving. Crispy, perfectly cooked, and absolutely delicious with the Guava Lava sauce. Since, I couldn't pass them up, we also ordered a side of maduros, and they were perfectly caramelized and sweet. The empanadas easily made my top five. Crispy on the outside, flavorful on the inside, and gone way too quickly. Also don't skip the watermelon lemonade, it was so refreshing and paired perfectly with everything we ordered. We'll definitely be back. There are still so many things on the menu I want to try, but I already know I'll be ordering the Boricua Soul Bowl. One tip for first-time visitors: if you're sitting inside and trying to get back outside , the exit is the same door you originally came in through on the far glass door. There is a sign, but we watched three different people accidentally try every other part of the glass first, so hopefully this saves someone a little confusion.

I'm from Charlotte and my friend was in the southeast visiting so we met up in Durham. ChatGPT…read moresuggested Boricua Soul as a part of our girls day. First stop. We never made it anywhere else lol! I'm so excited to write this review!! We chose it because when I reviewed the Yelp reviews they were stellar. But mostly I was super intrigued by the sweet potato cheesecake empanada and y'all it was everything I hoped it would be. It's small, you can maybe get 4 or 5 bites. The filling is sweet but not overpowering, good balance. The crust, crunchy and delicious. Came with a side of whipped cream. Drizzled in caramel sauce. I had the restraint to save it for last. We opted to split the shrimp sandwich and house made chips because we weren't too hungry and wanted to save room for the empanadas. Perfect plan. The sandwich can be ordered with a garlic, jerk or buffalo sauce. We were given a sample of the jerk to determine spicyness. Super spicy (which I loved) but my friend doesn't so we went with buffalo which wasn't spicy at all. The shrimp were a nice size, coated and seasoned well. The restaurant itself is small with about five tables but there is an abundance of outdoor seating shared with other businesses. We knew we planned to relax and catch up so we opted to eat outside. Despite the 90 degree weather, the entire area was shaded with a little wind so perfect. We got a number and our food and drinks were served to us. (Peach passion froze----yum!) Now. Boricua Soul is a great example of why I love seeking out and patroning local restaurants. The founders, Serena and Tori Fredericks, were both present, Serena managing the front, Tori managing the kitchen and both in and out of the restaurant serving people outside as well as inside. They were all over! Very welcoming. We were there for four hours and Serena's smile never left her face. She personally checked on us throughout. It felt like hanging out at your family's for the day. When we came in just a few people there, no line. Serena was at the register. I told her I came from Charlotte and she graciously gave us samples of the mac and cheese and collard greens as she described the menu. Both by the way, amazing! I don't think I've ever been able to find delicious perfectly seasoned greens with no meat. Before we knew it the line was to the door. By then I had the chance to experience her love for what she does and her heart for the community. Clean restaurant, beautiful and personable decor. Clean gender neutral private bathrooms. I took pics of the article on the wall about them, well worth the read. You too will drive miles to experience this Caribbean and Southern inspired restaurant! Im coming back and bringing people. There's so much more for me to try.

As an African American woman, soul food is more than just food to me. There's a certain authenticity and flavor I expect when I walk into a soul food restaurant. I ordered several items and after tasting everything, I honestly ended up throwing the entire meal away. I took a bite or spoonful of each item just to give everything a fair chance, and every time I moved on to the next thing, it was another disappointment. The mashed potatoes had a strange aftertaste that I couldn't get past. I don't know if it was the gravy or something else, but something tasted off. The barbecue ribs tasted more boiled than slow cooked and were completely drenched in sauce. The cabbage was overwhelmed with vinegar and lacked seasoning. The mac and cheese tasted more like overcooked noodles with cheese instead of flavorful baked mac and cheese. The cornbread was dry, and even the cake was dry. I will say the restaurant was clean and the employees were friendly, so I have no complaints there. My issue was with the food quality and value for the price. Spending around $80 for a meal like this did not feel worth it at all. Maybe other people love it, but based on my experience, I don't understand the hype. The food just did not taste authentic or well prepared to me. I wish I had stuck with my original plans and just gone to Mikey's Diner in Wilson, North Carolina instead. At least I would have left satisfied. For me, this wasn't worth the drive, wasn't worth the money, and I won't be returning.

The chicken is dark meat served on the bone - and by on the bone, I mean falling off the bone, it's so tender and moist. There are also some carrots and potato bits in the gravy, and I would happily eat a whole bowl of just those. The rice and peas (beans) were perfectly cooked. When I ordered through the Toast tab screens they have set up, it gave the option of indicating whether and how much gravy you'd like on the rice. I did the standard amount, which I think is just right, as the rice balances out the saltiness of the gravy. The mac & cheese was also really good - creamy, with some chewy baked cheese crust, and a hint of tanginess. The large portion was a ton of food. I shared my plate with my toddler, who loved the chicken, and it would be enough for at least one more meal.
