The food is always good here I am from Trinidad so I know what it should taste like. I husband brought me here when I arrived in the US several years ago. When I first came you would get plenty of food and a good price. As of yesterday 7/21/2024 I had not been in to eat here for some time. And what a surprise I got. The same plate that I normal get which was OX Tail, rice, cabbage and 2 beef patty. There was not as much food serviced this time so they cut back on the portions. This bill was $ 53.00 Which was outrages. In Trinidad I could have gotten heavy portions for half the price. So will not return here tell they lower there price. And if we all stop going they will either have to lower there price or will go out of business. There is no reason for these prices to be this high. read more

I can't believe my sister finally took me to her favorite Jamaican spot and it has me questioning what I've been missing out on all this time! We both got beef patties, mild for me and spicy for her and apparently we were lucky to get some this time since my sister said they're usually out most of the time. I also heard they do a BOGO special on Monday's and I'll definitely be there for that! The mild patty was perfect for me, just a hint of spice, perfectly savory, with a golden (hence the name) flaky crust on the outside. The spicy wasn't that spicy at all so maybe I'll opt for that next time. My sister got the small jerk chicken plate with rice, plantains and cabbage. TRADE SECRET ALERT: you HAVE TO, I mean HAVE TO ask them for oxtail gravy over your rice. GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY, that rice smothered to death in that stewed gravy was honestly my favorite part of the entire meal. The jerk chicken was flavorful and had the right amount of spices. It was most on the inside and the skin was packed with spices. I loved the cabbage and the plantains were perfectly sweet and soft. Will definitely be back! read more

So cool there's a Caribbean place close to work. Fast food style but not fast food. Choices such as ox tail stew and brown chicken stick to your ribs good! The jerk chicken not as spicy hot as I would prefer, but still tasty. The platters come with plantains, cabbage and rice. Good choice of juices such as ginger pineapple and sorrel, as well as Jamaican sodas. Both staff behind the counter friendly and helpful. Love this place! read more

"Inexpensive but tasty Caribbean food and patties" This chain store is nestled in a little strip mall with Roses. I came twice- once for lunch with some Duke Yelpers and once for dinner with my family. The restaurant is bright and playing fairly loud music (though comfortable). Prices are posted visibly, and most of the food is right there in front of you as you're ordering. For lunch, I got three of their "patties"- basically like empanadas or English "Cornish pasties". They come in a variety of flavors, so I tried the spicy beef, jerk chicken, and vegetable. Surprisingly, the veggie one was, hands-down, my favorite- very spicy, and full of great tasting veggies. The meat ones taste good, but they have a sort of soup-like texture- almost like the meat was run through a blender for a long time. I also tried the coco bread- it was "just OK." The patties range in price right around $2, so they're a good value. For dinner, I had the goat curry meal- the goat was AWESOME. Melt-in-your-mouth good, though watch out for lots of small bones. The large goat curry meal cost $10, and it came with the meat, rice (I had yummy spinach rice), vegetables (good but a little oily/ buttery), and fried sweet plantains. It's a huge meal, and really good. My family also got the plantains, and although they usually love eating that, they said these had a funny after-taste/ texture (I didn't notice, but I only had 3 pieces). My daughter also wasn't crazy about her patties- she said the spinach one tasted like canned spinach, and the chicken one was too soupy (few "chunks"). They had traditional Caribbean dishes available, too, like callaloo, ackee, etc. I wanted to try the Jamaican "festival", but they didn't have it either time, unfortunately, despite it being on the menu. Service was friendly- you order at the counter, and they dish out for you- almost cafeteria-style. Overall, A-OK. Good place to try. Since my family wasn't crazy about it, I'm not sure it was quite good enough to enter our regular "rotation", but I certainly enjoyed my food both times (especially that goat curry). Haven't had Caribbean food this good since actually visiting the islands. Opted for a "small" plate of the goat curry, which comes with 3 plantains, cooked cabbage, and your choice of rice (pro tip: if you're like me, and love trying a little of everything, they'll even split the portion amongst the rice choices), and doesn't feel all that small! Everything is scooped up from chafing dishes for you near the register. I love jerk chicken, and really wanted to get it via the patty; but they were out of the jerk chicken and veggie patties at the time, with the next batch not expected to finish for 20 minutes. Instead, I got a patty each of what was available -- spicy beef and curry chicken. The patties are akin to savory pop-tarts... a flaky crust with an oozing filling. A little disconcerting, perhaps, to have meat "ooze" -- but the spice is so good, I almost didn't notice. The goat curry, as others have said, is fantastic. Hints of nutmeg with cumin and coriander. Also loved the plantains -- but wish there had been more! Golden Krust's bakery case didn't have anything too tempting in it though (think: fruit cakes, breads, and sugar buns). But that's okay, because I'm happy to expend my calories on more of that curry! read more

This restaurant has always been a go to lunch spot as I work down North Duke Street. I am specifically a fan of the Brown Stew Chicken with sides of rice and beans and cabbage. I was craving Jamaican style oxtail and drove what felt like a very long time here from South Durham. It was definitely worth it. I got the small oxtail plate, it wasn't really small, but it was really good and oxtails don't have a lot of meat so if you're wanting that extra protein the large might be the way to go. The soup of the day was oxtail soup, so i got some of that to go. It was a hearty Caribbean style soup that I also enjoyed. I grew up with the Charlotte Golden Krust location, as well as many west indian restarlurants in NY/ORL, and this is a letdown. Staff was very nice, but they had ran out of roti and patties by 730PM, and the portions are much smaller than other mom and pop Jamaican restaurants in Durham. What really annoyed me was the small amount of meat provided, and the peas and rice tasted really old and not fresh. Would not return. read more

If I could I'd rate this place no stars. They put a vegan item in the menu but it's never readily available then want to charge full price when a customer has to wait 30mins for said food to be done. If your a vegan and looking to try their new patty this is not the place to go as you'll have one hell of a wait. 8/11/17 Update Golden Krust just gets better and better with repeat visits. Ox tail curry, goat curry, heck, even a simple chicken curry is amazing here. And the staff are friendly and accommodating to a fault. ---------- Okay, only one visit, but that's with a big asterisk next to it and an "I'll be back and soon." I had the ox-tail combo. The small one. Small, as in $14 and an effort to finish. There were three different rices to choose from, cabbage, greens, and plantains. I say choose, but I didn't choose. I asked for it, "However you'd make it for yourself" and that ended up being a little of EVERYTHING on my plate. It was my first time having ox tail, though I've wanted to try it for a long time. It did not disappoint. You have to get a little messy and pop bones in your mouth to suck all the luxurious fat from it, but it's worth it. My lunchmate put a sauce on his that he said was scotch bonnet level hot. I didn't try it this time because I wanted the taste as prepared (and while there was no heat at all, the spice flavors were perfectly balanced to my unpracticed taste). Next time I'll heat it up. Oh, and did someone say goat curry? I gotta get me some goat curry. read more

I came here for lunch and got a side of Mac and cheese and a beef patty. The Mac and cheese is not your average macaroni and cheese. It's seasoned very strong with a flavor that reminds me of the chicken flavored ramen noodles, it's worth trying. They give you a large block for a side. The two item were very filling for lunch. I am really glad my Haitian-American lunch companion took me here to introduce the kind of food he grew up eating! We got a small brown-stew chicken meal and a small oxtail meal. Went in for the roti. My husband and I grew up on West Indian food and it's hard to find in the south. So when we find a place we load up. I must say after reading his story on his humble beginnings and great work ethic, I had to get a introduction to his brand. I ordered brown-stew chicken, rice and beans, cabbage and plantains. Everything was flavorful, hot and fresh as they were just replenishing the line. I liked viewing the authentic jewelry offerings encased for sale. Everything I wanted to order they didn't have. I went there for some porridge they just opened and they didn't have any. The clerk told me to come on the weekend and I had to remind them it was the weekend. Asked for calaloo and saltfish they didn't have any. Asked for oatmeal, they were out of that too. I came here earlier today for lunch with some coworkers and was pleasantly surprised. After going though the menu, I instantly knew I was getting the goat curry. Until I read some of the reviews after I came here, I realized that this was apparently a favorite amongst the yelpers. The goat curry was awesome. Super tender and I was able to simply suck it off the bone. I also had to get a jerk patty. I love Caribbean patties so I had to try one. They were out of spicy beef, which made my decision easy because I was torn between jerk and beef. The jerk chicken patty was delicious as well. Be careful though, they are HOT. I NEVER ORDER WITH GRUBHUB AGAIN, they are liars with thieves as delivery drivers who calls in and say lies to keep your foods. I got the curry chicken which came w/ rice, cabbage, and 2 plantains. It was flavorful, and the meat literally fell off the bone. Nom nom My friend got oxtail, which was alright, but not worth the price. We split a beef patty, which was tasty enough, but nothing spectacular, just mildly spiced ground beef in a yellow crusty pastry. The ambiance is more of a sparse, hole in the wall, fast food place. Standard Golden crust fare, deliciously satisfying. The oxtail was great as usual! And an added bonus: For all the other Trinis out there or people wanting some Trinidad and Tobago food, they have roti there! Real Trinidad roti, with freshly made dhalphuri roti skins. I got a curry goat roti and it came with channa, potato and pumpkin. Seasoned real nice. The staff at Golden Krust are really outstanding. This was my first time at GK, and the young lady behind the counter took note of this. I was standing there for a good 10 minutes trying to decide what I was going to order, and since I couldn't make up my mind, she offered to give me a sample of all the most popular dishes. Boy, was I surprised... I sampled the ox tails, stew chicken, curry chicken, and curry wings. I ended up going with the curry wings, and it was a really good choice. It came with rice and peas, cabbage, and plantains. Everything was great!! I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a good Jamaican restaurant in the Triangle area. read more
