This is a long running family owner nursery in San Mateo. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and they have pretty wide selection of plants. Excellent variety of succulents and cacti too. The staff can easily answer questions about stock and also hold plants for you to pick up. They also take time to discuss with me when I'm picking something out. Nice selection of large ceramic pots . Finally there are also a few few nursery cats who are super cute! I have been going to Golden for decades. I have had great visits and not so great visits. I have killed plants purchased from them and others have thrived. So if I blend all the goods (high quality plants, large inventory, grafted plants etc.), with the bads (sometimes pricey), I have to give them the nod. The main reason? Advice. They take the time, if you ask, to provide very valuable advice. The counter clerks are mostly temps so are not knowledgeable. But the folks in the office and in the yard have been extremely helpful over the years. San Mateo and nearby have plenty of difference micro-climates, so be sure to ask when you make an investment in your yard. read more

Tucked back along the 101 freeway in San Mateo, this place has an amazing array of indoor and outdoor plants and seems to go on forever. Really friendly folks. Golden Nursery used to be my favorite nursery, it's still great but there are other places I'd rather go to. Customer service isn't a huge plus, staff will walk by and won't talk to you. (This isn't something I've factored into the review since to be frank, most nurseries are like this. Hopefully it helps information-wise though.) They also do not pick up the phone most of the time or return calls. They have a large selection although I personally found the edible plant selection to be a bit lacking, especially since we're pretty close to the frenzy of spring gardening. Prices I've found a bit on the higher side. Most avocado trees in particular were quite pricey and the biggest bummer for me was the Visitacion Valley tomato starts that I purchased. The two I nabbed were the best out of the bunch but I later found out they were completely overpriced. (For reference, I picked up three other starts at another local nursery for the same price + from the same grower and there's simply no comparison. I do not normally purchase starts nowadays since I have winstrips at home but alas this particular SF heirloom variety strangely does not have seeds available.) read more

Went to visit today with wife and our dog. Good clean place. Lots of outside as well as inside plants (which we came there for). Picked up several indoor plants. Price seems good, the plants look great and the help was good. Purchased some Spider, Peace Lilly and Snake plants. The only downside was parking no parking Infront, but have to hopefully find parking in the back alley of the store near the recycling place. read more

YooooooooooOoOoOoooo!! This place is breathtaking. Didn't really expect it to be this big. Actually, I didn't even know what the heck to expect when I was pulling up, because it's literally right off the freeway, and tucked into a residential area where the streets are super narrow and there are plenty of cars. I heard parking could be a beezy here, but we didn't have any issues coming around 11.00 or something. There are tons of plants to choose from, and I believe that it's either all outdoor plants or 99%. Was looking for some stuff to hang around the house, but left with a bunch of succulents instead, ha! Never had succulents before, so we'll see if I don't kill them within the first few weeks. Succulents are a different breed of plant, man! When I get plants, I love to coddle them, love them, sing to them, raise them to be the best plants they could ever be. Succulents... now they require the exact opposite of that. They are desert plants! They thrive on being left TF alone and I kind of hate it. LET ME LOVE YOU!!!! AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! read more

Very nice staff and well-stocked with lots of exotic plants. We saw holy basil, many kinds of arugula, kale, gooseberries, dragonfruit, holy basil, and trees like yuzu, kaffir, and cara cara orange. Tons of avocado and fig trees to choose from. Different passion fruit vine sizes with fruits and flowers. Staff is very friendly and knowledgable. Seeds are in the back in staff-only room. We were in the area and decided to stop by at this nursery to look for a plant I wanted. As we drove up there was someone signaling us to enter and showing us where to park. The parking lot was packed for a Sunday afternoon. We got the second to last parking spot when we arrived. At the entrance they have hand sanitizer and I could see a staff member sanitizing carts that were used with a spray bottle and towel. All the staff were wearing a mask. I walked in and began browsing their inventory. I've been here several times before so the layout was clear. All the plants were organized and neatly placed on pallets. I walked up to staff and asked for help finding the plant I wanted. The man told me they might be out of stock but that I could request they order the plant. He pointed me to where they moved the indoor plants to check out what they had available. I walked in and a sign stated only 3 people can come inside that small section at a time. I checked for the plant and found it. Only problem was it was way too big. I wanted something smaller. I checked out what else they had to offer and saw they had some Venus Fly Traps something I have never seen before. It was too bad they all looked like they were dying so I didn't buy one. I looked at the different planters still seeking a specific size but didn't find any. My kiddo found a succulent and a pot and purchased it up at the front. The cashier was efficient and ready to help. The customer service was helpful. The nursery had a good inventory. Will return when in the area to check out what's new. read more

To preface this review I want to say I never write reviews (especially bad ones) but my experience at Golden Nursery was so awful I need to let other potential customers know. I went in with a plant that was 2-3 weeks old, obviously diseased, or had pests. I asked if I could exchange it, not get a refund, and was told to follow a young cashier to talk with a manager. This man (manager) was so rude, condescending and basically scolded me for presenting a dying plant that I purchased at his nursery. I could understand if the plant was a year old, but 2-3 weeks is nothing. At first he would not talk to me even though I was standing next to his employee. Then when he addressed me he told me how ridiculous I was in my watering with a drip system that was installed by a professional last summer. Even if the plant's condition was my "fault" I have never been treated so rudely as a customer. He could have kindly explained what to do or what was wrong with the plant. I had to ask what do i do- just throw it away. I have been shopping at Golden Nursery for over 20 years. Sadly I will not ever return because of this abusive customer service. And will freely warn folks about the terrible customer service. read more

Huge nursery with a ton of plants! Parking isn't the best here. The lot is pretty small and not much street parking. I read this in reviews though so I've only gone within an hour of opening. Probably the best time to come! Having never been to an actual nursery, I was blown away by how many plants there were here! I've only browsed the plant sections at Lowe's and Home Depots, and Golden Nursery has so much more variety. Sure it's more expensive, but probably worth it to get more special types of plants. I love carnations and really wanted to get one but could never find any at the big box stores. There weren't too many here either and they were still very small, but I did buy one. It's been maybe 2 months now and still no flowers. It's definitely working my patience, but will be so rewarding when it finally blooms! The entire right side of the nursery is filled with tomatoes, herbs, and other veggies. Most of the people were shopping here, presumably all working on their covid gardens. We got a couple tomato plant varieties that we never heard of, and are awaiting the fruits of our labor. read more

Thank you Chris! You are what true customer service should be I was looking for an almond tree and I called last Tuesday to see if they had any in stock. Chris answered the phone right away and had a very friendly and pleasant voice. He said they had a few that came in, but since I could not get there until Saturday i asked if I could pay for it and if they would hold it. He said yes. This was a little scary as my husband is a landscaper and is very picky about anything we buy. Buying sight unseen was scary but I was afaraid they would sell them by Saturday. Chris was very reassuring and said he would pick a nice one. This tree is going in a very special place at a grave sight so it is very emotional for me. About 10minutes later he called me back and reassured me that he had picked a nice tree that already had fruit. We talked about the different types of almonds and he made me feel very comfortable. On Saturday we arrived, parking can be a little tricky, and walked right up to the desk. Within a few minutes they brought out our tree and it was beautiful! Decided to start an urban farm, it's tiny but has lots of charm! Home Depot's crowd control is awry so I gave Golden Nursery a try. They have a ton of plants in there! Sadly, the edible section was bare. But the few we bought were fine, their succulent section was truly sublime! They're great to get plants for your yard, but less so if you need Swiss chard. I came here to look for plants that i could use for my patio, coz my patio looks so empty dead, i planned on just buying a couple of plants with no idea what kind of plants to get. Parking is a little bit tight, you have to wait for someone to leave or justbpark in the street. The place is small but oh boy, a lot of beautiful plants to choose from that i ended up buying more than i planned. A worker even helped me with information about plants and how to take care of them, if plants are good for outdoor or indoor or can be both. Golden Nursery will always have a special place in my heart. A few months ago, my husband and I experienced the tremendous loss of our younger child. Neither of us are knowledgeable about plants or gardening, but we wanted something to honor our sweet girl. We wandered the aisles of the nursery and my husband was drawn to the "sweet pea" shrub. I didn't want to make any hasty decisions, so we left without buying anything. The next day, we looked at photos of the "sweet pea" and realized that our little girl was telling us it was the one. We went back to Golden Nursery and worked with Chris. He and his coworker later explained to us that the one we had our eye on was the display and not normally for sale. I give them 5 out of 5! I brought in my sick orchid and asked for repotting, but they declined. Although it was a bit disappointing, I understand why. However, they provided helpful advice for my plant, which was tricky since two different varieties potted together and they were not in good health. I followed their advice and now I see improvement.
