I've never done a review but for this restaurant I felt it necessary! We've been coming every summer for the better of 10 years & it never disappoints! The food is amazing, but the hospitality...impeccable! Feels very homey and definitely a spot for locals. We sat on the patio. The buffalo chicken wrap was very tasty. The Mac and cheese was very very bland. Second time I have visited this restaurant with a bad experience. First time I thought it a fluk and tried again. Twice we/I have been accosted by strange drunks before NOON! Today, not only the drunk asking me my covid status, but the waitress leaving my bill took exception to my having had covid shots and completely went insane. I have NEVER been called a cunt by waitstaff for being educated enough to do the obvious by listening to professionals to get vaccinated. I do not understand and hope your management does something about this aberration. Knowing now that the staff (or at least this woman) is ignorant about the most simple prevention of Covid is the last time I, or my family frequent this bar/restaurant. Wow!! The food, the service, the ambiance!! And, yes, I am a real reviewer, a tourist who happened upon the best breakfast on the coast of Maine! We had the Irish Benedict and the Blueberry Crepes and they were AMAZING!! The home fries are the best I've EVER HAD!! Crispy outside, fluffy inside!! This turned out to be what us locals call "a Sysco place." We went because I really wanted Eggs Benedict and this restaurant popped up in Yelp. Unfortunately, it was the worst thing out of the bunch we got :-) For some reason the eggs were scrambled - I've never seen that before. In peoples pictures to the page they were not that way, they were poached. The sauce was a little watery and the English muffins were mush. I got the Canadian ham, it was tiny. They didn't really have much taste to them. The potato side was not crispy at all-- soft and more flavor than the eggs. My friend got the blintzes. I ate one, it was delicious. The strawberries on top were definitely frozen and not fresh though, but the sauce they were made with was super sugary and you couldn't taste the frozen-ness. Another friend got chicken tenders and fries. Tenders were okay, fries were undercooked and floppy. We shared the onion rings, I hate beer battered ones and I was excited to see these are breaded. These were actually the best thing we got. They were homemade. It was an OK experience. I don't know if I'll come back. If I did I would definitely get the blintzes. read more

Extra bonus is the staff, Kim took care of us one day and we got to talking, she told us about a recent trip she had taken, tubing down the Saco River, she said it was an excellent way to spend the day. This restaurant has been a favorite over the last few years. Last weekend's take-out was a disappointment. The crab cakes were mushy and didn't seem cooked through. We trashed them. Our waitress was not wearing any form of face mask for the entire duration of our meal. This is ridiculous- there is a mask mandate regardless of vaccination status, etc. especially in an establishment where food is being served. I was extremely uncomfortable and should have left. This is not an isolated incident of negligence- many other Yelp/TripAdvisor, etc. reviews speak about their lack of adherence to government-mandated COVID protocols. One of my favorites! Breakfast is amazing, two of my favs is eggs Benedict and the homemade hash omelette. But all their breakfast is like perfect comfort food. I order lunch more often than anything because it's so damn good! And the serving sizes are so large, I have leftovers for dinner :) prices haven't noticeably changed since COVID which I find respectable, very reasonable prices. The bartender Skip is friendly, attentive and delightful to chit chat with. I recommend the Blood Mary. Absolutely worth checking this gem out !! read more

The atmosphere is pretty laid back like any small diner. Service was great and everything came out quick. Food was good, but nothing I would have to go there for because it was absolutely amazing. Prices of everything was descent. I got an omelette and it was loaded full. Fantastic! I was with Hub, my sister and brother-in-law, and our friends on a recent Sunday morning when B-i-L suggested the Golden Rooster for breakfast. What a swell joint! We all had standard breakfast fare: omelets, bacon & eggs, egg sandwiches, etc. I had corned beef hash and eggs (sunny side up eggs), which was perfection. Everybody had high marks for his/her choice. Our waitress was a hoot, the place was packed, the food is excellent. The Golden Rooster is definitely worthy of a return trip! read more

Love this little gem, especially when the weather is nice & you can sit outside. We went on Sunday, they only serve breakfast on Sundays, which I did not know. So I had a second breakfast for lunch. It was delicious. I got eggs over medium & they were cooked to perfection with toast & home fries. Mom got the French Toast and loved it. This is someone else's breakfast place. First, the good news. The Golden Rooster has a ton of curb appeal for a storefront restaurant, it looks clean, and their service is really good. There are enough people working and they're generally on top of things. The only time we needed to flag down a server was to ask for more coffee. Unfortunately, our meals were surprisingly devoid of flavor. The home fries, eggs, and even the corned beef hash looked good but didn't have much taste. The only reason I was pretty sure that the corned beef hash was homemade was because of the huge piece of gristle that I found in it. I think that the flavor problem has to do with a lack of spices. Not salt, spices. The clientele was mostly older and I know that many of them don't like things particularly spicy. I think they know their customers and they're giving them what they want. Unfortunately, I thought it was incredibly bland. And the coffee wasn't very good. It was drinkable, but that's about all. They've recently opened for dinner and their somewhat Greek menu sounds interesting but there's no mention of this on their web site. I'd love to try their dinner because the area is sorely lacking in Greek food but for breakfast, I think I'll try someplace else. Four stars for atmosphere and service, but two for the food and coffee averages out to three. But you might want to add a star if you prefer your food to be fairly bland. read more

We went as a family with my 5 year old daughter at 11:30am on a Sunday. It was very busy with a wait which was anticipated. Our breakfast and service were above standard. I like the food. It's why I like to dine here. My ongoing complaint is that it's a bar in the middle of a restaurant. Today, most of the people at the bar were highly intoxicated spilling drinks and using poor language excessively and loudly. It's unfortunate as I really like the food and location. I will continue to dine here but not much with my family. I like dining with my family so not as much dining as I'd like to do. Unfortunately, these do not appear to be outlier events as far as the bar clientele are concerned. Please set higher standards of behavior at the bar, for example, don't serve customers alcohol until trashed at 11:30a on a Sunday. read more

I am beginning my morning with breakfast at the Golden Roster located on Main Street in Saco. It has been a local Saco breakfast / lunch spot since 1967. My wife has the day off so she is joining me. Upon entering I was immediately greeted by a friendly patron sitting at the counter as he commented on my University of Maine sweatshirt I was wearing. I immediately felt at home. My wife and I found our seats and were quickly asked if either of us wanted coffee. We kindly declined and asked for water with lemon instead. The menu was extensive with lots of breakfast and lunch favorites. My wife ordered the Lobster Eggs Benedict without the home fries and chose a grilled corn muffin in its place. I jumped on the veggie omlet minus the onions and we were quite satisfied with our choices. A few minutes after placing our order the waitress returned with sad news. They were out of lobster. Disappointed my wife made a second Benedict choice, spinach. My wife's eggs benedict Florentine was good. The English muffin was toasted to perfection and along with the yoke of the medium eggs it did not make the muffin soggy. She hates that! The spinach was chopped spinach and unfortunately the kind you buy frozen at your local supermarket. The corn muffin, and my wife loves, just loves corn muffins, was was grilled perfectly, however there was a slight onion taste which one can only assume came from the grill that had recently grilled onuons. Second time trying this place. First time, the food was just ok but it came out quickly. Today, we waited 45 minutes for pancakes and a sandwich. The pancakes were cold and rubbery and the accompanying bacon was not crispy as requested and all fat. I'd made my peace with it being a Pepsi place the last time, but when no one checks on you for 45 minutes, you end of finishing your tea and gave nothing else. Left upset but thought I'd at least let them know. The manager was sorry, but nothing was altered. No offer to take my crappy pancakes off our bill, nothing except an apology. OMG! Worst experience I have ever had today. We have been coming to Golden Rooster for generations and never had a problem. Today we came in, party of 4. We waited 20 minutes for drinks. 3 bloody Mary's and 1 Mimosa. One hour after we placed our food order and asked a dozen times where our food was ( the entire dining room turned over while we were there and everyone that was seated after us were fed before us), still no food!!!!
