I have been to Golden several times in the past without problems, but some time ago. Perhaps it has changed owners, since the day I was there an ancient Chinese couple was sitting in the front. I had gone to the seafood district intending to go to Roses, but didn't make it until around 5:40 and Roses was closed. I went into Golden which appeared to be the only shop with an open sign. I was immediately overwhelmed by the terrible smell. That should have been my sign to leave, but I thought that perhaps the seafood on ice was actually okay. I bought catfish, had a redfish filleted, purchased four red snapper fillets, and 3 lbs shrimp, having it all placed on ice into my cooler. When I returned home I found that none of the items were fresh, with the pre-filleted snapper smelling particularly fishy/foul. The redfish I had filleted did not smell bad, so I think it is safe to eat, but I am afraid to eat the remaining fish. The total of my purchases was $57, so this is a loss of around $45. I won't be back here! The fact that the facility was not cleaned should have been an indication that no one was supervising cleanliness or safety! read more

I am not sure of all of the recent bad reviews but I didn't let it deter me. I went across the street first to the higher rated market but they had a very small selection so we came here because it seemed busier and I was glad we did. They had 10x the selection. Huge sign says take a number when you walk in, there's also a number counter sign in the back and they also call out numbers so I'm not sure how that's easy to miss? It definitely is a bit chaotic but it's on par with being a busy place. We opted to just get fish although the crab looked good and a few people were getting a lot of crawfish that also looked good. I went back across the street to get the royal red shrimp which was available but their shrimp selection looked nice also. I think people get impatient and leave, we stuck it out and they blew through 10 numbers to get to us but it did take like 20 mins to get to us and we got there around 10am on a Saturday. The guy helping us was not a native English speaker but it wasn't an issue to me at least. Not trying to be snarky here but when you're nice to people- they tend to be nice back and are more helpful has been my experience. I did a lot of pointing and he made sure I understand what fish I was getting as some things weren't labeled clearly, I'm glad...I almost walked out with some sardines that got him giggling at me! But we got excellent and fresh catfish fillets already prepped, then the whole fish he cleaned and filleted for us really nicely. The drum also looked good. We got salmon, snapper, fresh trout, reddish and milkfish which I found out is a Filipino fish so I'm excited to make that. They had a lot of good choices and the prices were really really great. They also gave us as much ice as we needed to pack our cooler and helped us bring it out to our vehicle. So - for us at least it was a really great experience and if you're not in a rush it is well worth the wait in my opinion. read more

After my terrible experience with a seafood restaurant yesterday, I decided to find another avenue to get my seafood fix. What a better way to make sure the food is prepared property and make sure the job was do right the first time, is to do it yourself. So that day, I decided to get fresh seafood from the source at Seabrook and skip the gamble of getting crappy food, crappy service, and the social pressure of leaving a 20% tip for someone that does not give a shit about their job and have no desire to work. Well, my original plan was to go to Rose's Seafood, but I wanted to try a different place, since I believe that Rose's may be all hype. Well I decided to drive into the parking lot of Golden Seafood and give this place a try. Walking into this establishment, the place appears to be smaller and MOST of the seafood appeared to be fresh except for the blue crabs with appeared to all been dead in the holding tank. I had a craving for king crab, however the king crab was dumped exposed in the open air freezer and all of it appeared to have freezer burns on it. I was considering getting some oysters, but decided to skip that. The place was overall in decent shape and I decided since I am here, might as well and get the seafood here. I asked to Redfish fillets but the guy picking the Redfish picked the catfish fillets. When I asked him in spanish what fish did he pick, he indicated catfish, which I did not want. I asked for the snapper which he provided. I also got 2 lbs of jumbo shrimp which he got and the overall condition of the shrimp was good (there were some smaller shrimp mixed in the batch, but I did not care. Purchases were packed in ice and the cashier at the front was the most disgruntle person I have ever met. Transaction was completed and took the food home and made shrimp cocktail which was excellent. Fish was fresh and tasty. Will I go back again? YES. read more

Stay away from this place! Some seafood might be "cheaper" compared to other stores in that area, but their quality is the worst. We bought some seafood from there and some fish smelled very bad when we got back home, also a lot of shrimps were very soft. Avoid this place if you can! Workers never want to take care of you and owners don't seem to care either. It seems really bad like they have old fish product mixed in with new. The service here is just so bad till I cannot see myself coming back here. So you figure two get the bounty of the sea for. +/- $50-$60. And then....you get the joy of cooking it. Sweet way to save on a night in. Well try a field trip homey. Head down to Golden and take a looksy. You'll be blown away by the sheer selection. They got every damn critter from the watery depths that you can imagine. Seriously, if Noah built an aquarium for an impending drought...this is what it would look like. You want tuna? You got tuna! But here you don't pick your tuna out of the case. They are going to pick Charlie up, whole, out of the ice. Then you tell them how thick you want it. And they run the whole tuna through a freakin ban saw! Simply ree-dunk-u-lous! How's that for you? You could pick your tuna out of a lineup. That's fresh. I got four 1" steaks and a pound of super jumbo gulf (support your local fishermen) shrimp for less than $25. Uh yeah, put your abacus down. That's a deal, my friend. I've tried many of the markets down here just to see the difference. There's probably half dozen w/in 100 yards of each other. They're all pretty good, cheap, and fresh. I like Golden for the extensive variety. If you're just looking for shrimp and a snapper fillet, any of these shops should do the trick. How many are open post-Ike? Ewww. I've been to several fish markets in the area and this one is just gross compared to the others on the same street. There is a layer of grime over nearly every surface and it doesn't smell like they've hosed the place down ever. We came just for bait shrimp and I couldn't believe people were buying seafood to actually consume themselves. On top of the general filth, the customer service was horrible. We had been waiting for more than five minutes when another customer came and stood next to us. A gentleman came over and immediately helped the other customer. When he walked over to help ring them up, another employee who was busy told yet another employee to come help us. That employee laughed, walked right past us and around the corner. That's when we decided to leave. We went down the street, walked into a much cleaner place that, while still smelling like a fish market, didn't repulse me. We were helped and walked out in less than 3 minutes there. Will never go back to Golden again. read more

I will not go to this market again. I ordered 2 lbs of Croaker. The man could hardly speak English, but he smiled, shook his head up and down, and repeated what I said. So, I thought he understood me. He cleaned the fish (somewhat) and packaged it. When I went to pay for it, I noticed they charged me more than what was advertised. I went back to make sure I was looking at the right sign and price. Then another man who spoke perfect English came over and stated they gave me Trout instead. I didn't order Trout nor does it sound like Croaker. He wouldn't correct or give me my money back. He only stated, "You got a better tasting fish." I was speechless! Consumer beware. These guys tried to cheat me on my live crawfish. They change the weight of the bags to get more money. My bag was 31 lbs and they marked it as 37 lbs. I will never go back. I only go to Rose's Seafood now, plus they definitely have a better variety and better prices. read more

I really like this place. It has a large variety, and it's very fresh at reasonable prices. It was the only one left standing after Hurricane Ike, so that tells you something. A lot of people go to Rose's and I think it's overrated. Give Golden a chance, and I guarantee you'll have a great experience. The old Asian lady behind the cash register might get on your nerves, but she's been working here for over ten years to make sure her three kids have a reasonable life! This place has horrible service! I was sitting in the car and thought it was strange that all parking spaces changed out like 3 times. I went inside to make sure my mother was okay and found out that they had been ignoring her the whole time. She had #72 and they were on 94. She kept trying to get their attention and they continued to act like they didn't know what she was talking about and did not attempt to help her. There's a guy on the side calling numbers, but not making sure those are the people being served. She went and got a manager and they finally assigned someone to her. Ofcourse the lady can speak English when it's time to tell my mother the cost of the purchase. They refused to even give her the plastic bag with the paper bag lining after spending $62. We will never be back. We use to come here faithfully years ago. Appears to be different owners that don't care about how customers are treated. And... they don't appear to periodically clean the work areas... Gross! We will go across the street to Emery's in the future."! read more
