I went Sat., after paying 11.00, the chicken was raw, also there was so much fat where it wasn't cleaned. I called the manager Mon., he was rude, and said there was nothing that he could do about it. Chicken livers anyone?? The once ubiquitous giant yellow frying pan signs have all but gone by the wayside. This chain got its start right here in RVA in the '60's. They started selling their tender fried chicken in the Thalhimers stores and eventually grew into an international chain. When the guy who created the recipe died in the 80's, his family sold out and after the business changed hands several more times most of the eye catching yellow pans disappeared. Occasionally you'll see one of these large iconic pans still standing by a business, but now the logo has been changed and it's advertising a Chinese restaurant or a car dealership. There are only 3 Golden Skillet's left in Richmond. One location is in Petersburg. Don't expect any great atmosphere. The décor is stuck in the '80's too! Lots of bright yellow and red. I think they even have an old PacMan machine, which is kind of cool and retro! My hubby and I will trek out to one of these locations every now and again to reminisce and grab a couple pieces of juicy, crispy chicken for me... and yes... fried chicken livers for him. I do not partake of them (gag), but he and my mom would swear by them. GS is one of the few places that serves these fried liver & gizzards!! Ha, I wonder why?! Winky face! Although some of the signs have changed, the tasty chicken recipe hasn't. It's still pretty darn good chicken! There's not a lot of breading on the chicken, it's lightly coated in a flour base so the flavor of the meat comes through. And the fresh, homemade fluffy biscuits are the perfect companion! They serve up plenty of country sides: cole slaw, hush puppies, corn on the cob, collard greens, okra, mashed taters, baked beans, corn nuggets and more. Also on the menu: pork chops, fried fish, chicken sandwich, chicken tenders, shrimp and some other entrées. Plus they serve several flavors of PIE!! The service is somewhat slow and they are slightly higher priced than some of your other fried chicken chains, but for a touch of nostalgia, just pull over when you catch sight of the huge yellow frying pan, spread your wings and chow down! This is my go to place when I need some fried chicken for a party. This place is clean and the service was fast.

Golden Skillet is still around!!! I was so excited to snag a box and so was the BF. We arrived and the order was ready to go. The restaurant look pretty much as I remembered, as did the bathrooms. We chatted with the friendly manager/employee who seemed to be a one man show (I think there was someone in the back). We were supposed to save it but the box was raided immediately. So juicy and delicious! Though it didn't have as much coating as it used to, it was still Absolutely delicious! The coleslaw was a tad wet, but still tasty... and the mashed potatoes and chicken gravy, still tasty too!!!!! By far the worst fried chicken place I have had in 30 years and this place shouldn't even be able to serve food to the public and certainly not for a fee. I ordered the 4 pc chicken tender combo and cod fish dinner. The cod fish breading is bland, oily and falls right off the cod fish and is served on top of your fries leaving you with oil soak and soggy fries that are not edible. The chicken tenders which should be just called tenders was pressed patty and not chicken that were covered in a heavy bread crumb breading to hold the tender together. Save your money and visit anywhere else but here because you will be utterly disappointed. I visited Golden Skillet for the first time in a very long time. My family and I ordered our food and sat down to eat. We were having a great time eating and talking until, the lights and tv cut off. Apparently, they close at 9:00 pm, which we weren't aware of. Instead of coming to us or even shouting from the cash register we close at 9:00, they just cut everything off. My family and I were confused. We stood up and asked if they were closing, they said yes we close at 9:00. It was 9:00 on the dot, which meant they had been preparing to close and couldn't take one minute to provide a kind gesture of saying we are getting ready to close. Brought chicken and biscuits on10/1/18 around 1 p.m. When we returned home to open the box I was very surprised that the chicken looked and felt like it was day old. I would not have sold this chicken to anyone. I called back to the store and talked to the manager and he said it might have been cooked in old oil or cooked to long, than why box it up for your customer. I was very disappointed because we wanted this to be a pleasant experience being that it has been at least 12 years since we brought chicken from this location.
