New Year's Eve I was sold old chicken on my Big Skillet sandwich (also over done onion rings but they were palatable but the chicken was leather). Me and my friend girl went to the Golden Skillet on jahnke road in Richmond Virginia today, I ordered a big Skillet combo which I call a little Skillet combo these days. They have changed the bread on the big Skillet combo now it's a small roll they don't cut the chicken in half is half the size of usually be and I ordered a chicken leg so the batter still taste the same on the crunchy part but the chicken had no flavor taste totally different they have ruined Golden Skillet. The sandwich is so small now and it is $8.50 for a slider that's what it looks like to me. $2.25 for a chicken leg which came too you know how to count and you get a can of Pepsi. Taste totally different and my friend girl she didn't even eat all of her food and she ordered a two-piece and two sides big beans and macaroni salad, the sides was so small they don't put them in a cup when you eat in and they weren't baked beans they were a can of pork and beans. Jack roll people don't go there it ain't worth your money we only have a few left and they ruining it they are ruining it, no they have on it the bread does not make the sandwich anymore it was the bread for me and the chicken has no flavor inside like it used to have. Found out about Golden Skillet through Reddit. I enjoy a good chicken sandwich and some tenders so I figured I would give it a try.... After trying...I just don't recommend. Something about the chicken creeped me out and tossed the majority of my tenders to my dogs. The chicken sandwich was okay but still was psyching myself out eating it. Golden Skillet is still here! The people at the counter are super nice and they still have the classics like the big skillet sandwich and those thicker cut fries. We are usually pretty laser focused when ordering so we went with two orders of the 6 PC mixed chicken (we wanted to save some for the road trip back to NYC) and my cousins had the big skillet combos. Note: rolls and sides are sold separately when ordering the chicken only specials. I also got a side of coleslaw for nostalgia sake (not as good, waaaaay too much dressing, mushy). Food came out in about 10 minutes and it was all fresh and hot. Everyone enjoyed their selections marvelled how the space itself still had the exact look from our childhood, down to the wallpaper. I was delighted to see these folks were still in business. Well, maybe not the original owners of this location but, they were open! Past experiences many years ago were always positive. Not this time. I ordered the Big Skillet sandwich, my alltime Golden Skillet favorite. The chicken was absolutely awful! Tough, fatty and a weird taste. I could swear this tasted like frog legs. Extremely delicious fried chicken sandwich. So crispy and hot even when I got home. Burned the roof of my mouth, but it was so good I didn't care. Sides are nothing to write home about, but Cash only, but pretty inexpensive. Something like $6 for a chicken sandwich and a drink, possibly even a side. Can't beat it. The lady that runs the register overcharged me "on purpose" because my total was less than $10 and I was using a visa. When I questioned her as to why she would add to my order without my permission, she said the total needed to be over $10 in order to use credit card. I thought she was up to something when she didn't hand me my receipt after I paid. I canceled that order and made her ring up the correct order and I paid cash. The wings were so small. In the past, they would add an extra one to make up for the small size. Not this time. So I asked for a refund and after I got my money back, the lady said, " F You Bitch". I told her I was shocked she was acting this way since I have been coming here for years. She said ' People been coming here longer than you" So you rip them off too? So. I won't be back. First, I must admit before trying Golden Skillet, I was not a huge fried chicken fan. Yes, I know what's wrong with me??! BUT, Golden Skillet has made me a believer! OMG, their chicken is juicy, tender, and has just the right amount of crispy skin. My mouth is watering just thinking about it...hum, perhaps I should have new dinner plans. I was in the mood for fried chicken and Golden Skillet came to mind. It's been a while since I've eaten chicken at Golden Skillet. I stopped by for lunch on a Sunday around noon. The restaurant was busy with a lot of takeout orders. There was a 15 minutes wait. The chicken is cooked to order, so it's hot. I ordered a 3 piece fried chicken meal (breast, wing, & leg) with mashed potatoes and slaw. The fried chicken was delicious. All of the chicken was fried to a nice crisp, seasoned very well, and juicy inside. My mashed potatoes with gravy hit the spot. The slaw was average at best in my opinion. The employees were friendly. Golden Skillet closes at 3pm on Sundays. There's parking in a small strip mall. Golden Skillet is a good choice for fried chicken in RVA. My intentions to forge my own way once I was old enough were stymied by an abrupt closing of the business when I was in my early teens. Hold on you your seats, people, because we are going to rocket forward almost two decades; to my surprise and delight, while perusing Yelp for inspiration, I discover the existence of a fully-functional Golden Skillet location on Jahnke Road. It was finally Game Time! Let me run down some important factors about the place that hit me immediately upon arriving: Located in proximity to a cash advance business...CHECK Original 1970's yellow and orange color scheme on the often repaired wallpaper...CHECK Pepsi-sponsored menu boards from the same era, faded from long use...CHECK Complete lack of modern payment options such as credit cards...CHECK Office Depot woodgrain sign declaring the low-cholesterol nature of the chicken preparation...CHECK Unhealthy and obese customer base...CHECK Anachronistic ink drawings of Hindu deities on the wall...CHECK Taped over price list almost too low to be good news...CHECK If any of these facts turn you off you need to pack Grayson, Brent, Riley, and your gluten-free lifestyle into that white Tahoe Limited Edition and head back to KFC for your two-piece disaster of bland white meat and reconstituted mashed potatoes covered in light brown saltwater. On the other hand, if you are like me, you just read these points as a comprehensive list of bona fides indicating some solid fried chicken is being created right behind that counter. I ordered a Big Skillet Combo with a chicken thigh on the side (you can order individual pieces). The combo consisted of a chicken breast filet sandwich, fries, and what I would consider a medium sized drink for less than $6. I started my consumption protocol with the thigh, just to get a true gauge on the flagship product. The chicken was as juicy, crispy, and flavorful as any person could possibly expect on this plane of existence. I could have easily ordered another dozen pieces and then been happily wheeled out of the front door and driven straight to my cardiologist. This would have been a horrific mistake, however. I was, in fact, guilty of lacking the faith of which the Big Skillet Sandwich itself was worthy. Luckily, before making my way back to the counter to reload my bright orange secondhand cafeteria tray with a supplementary bucket I took a bite of that superlative mellifluence of complex carbohydrates and animal protein which instantly shouldered its way to the forefront of my culinary understanding of the chicken sandwich genre. The chicken of the filet was as dialed-in as the thigh that came before it but with a crust so crunchy it audibly shattered when I bit into it. This, in contrast with the soft pillowy bun, just the right amount of mayo, and a generous globule or nine from one of the restaurant's ubiquitous Texas Pete hot sauce bottles made it a truly wonderful sandwich experience. Unfortunately, the sides have the potential to be overshadowed by the chicken itself but that would be a tragedy. The fries were crispy and soft on the inside, worthy of a review by themselves and the fresh rolls were of the dinner/yeast variety for which I have a particular weakness. The baked beans tasted identical to Bush's brand (a positive) and the mashed potatoes were admittedly not major league but still a country mile ahead of the all of the Big Chicken Chain offerings. I will be coming back many more times; you would be remiss to not make your own way in as soon as you can. Just remember to bring CASH. read more

It's been over 40 years (since it opened) and the place has not changed. No updating on the interior nor pay type...it's CASH, and cash only. Now to the food.
