With the current crazy Covid19 plagued times we are living in, I've made a concerted effort to support local businesses. Recently because of C19, there has been some meat shortages at the main grocery stores, so I decided to check out butcher shops in my area. Golden Steer fits the bill! They have a substantial selection of meat cuts, marinated meats, smoked meats. They also sell a variety of seasonings and rubs of all kinds, local beers, wines and even eggs! I love getting their rib eye (boneless and bone-in) - we keep it simple stupid (KISS), just a heavy helping of salt and pepper then throw it on the grill... It is full of flavor! We've tried the Maui ribs, it was good, but I think I will stick to non-marinated meats at this point. I look forward to trying their other offerings as summer grilling time is upon us! read more

The pepperoni ropes are why I came and the the frozen meatloaf is very good as well just add mashed potatoes, gravy if you like and a vegetable dish of some sort. I wish they weren't in Bellevue and were closer but there was parking available and we missed the rush so that was cool. The service was good and it looked like a regular butcher shop. I recommend the place if are a carnivore like me. Used to be a good location, and has pretty good meats selection especially for beef cuts. If you're looking for specific cuts they will cut it for you or you have to order ahead like for goat meat. Love the location and hours, easy to find and polite staff. I'm very happy to support local businesses that actually do a good job. Their smoked candied bacon is delicious! I would have gladly given them 4 stars, but just cannot. Their stock is inconsistent, the smoker machines are either old or don't operate well and are frequently broken. My biggest frustration is their communication issues. They rarely if ever answer their phone. I've had to drive 25 mins each way multiple times recently because no one bothers answering the phone for new inquiries. I'm not wasting more time traveling to this place only to be told that they're out of something or their machines/phone is broken or come back another day. I have noticed a decline in good sausage all around the state which is a shame. Golden Steer Choice Meats has produced a product that fulfills our bratwurst dreams. Perfect meat to spice ratio, quality casing and they cook up beautifully. I even opted to cook them indoors tonight and holy smokes, they were gorgeous! Okay, enough about the meats. The staff there is great, friendly and knowledgeable. I'm never buying bratwurst anywhere else and now I also know where to get cherry wood chips for winter smoking. Finally giving up on this place after going here for 20+ years. The service has changed. Used to have nice, polite and friendly people. Now each time I go there is a younger gentleman that is condescending and not helpful at all. The final straw was getting a slab of pork belly (three times the cost from a year back, but that is inflation and Bellevue prices). I asked for skin off and get home to find out I have to do the removal myself. Pay $8.50 per pound and toss 1.5 lbs of skin because he didn't listen or didn't care is not a good experience. I'm actually writing about the new Woodinville location and it's a welcome edition with meats and poultry sourced from multiple sources.. My first trip here and I got some hamburg which actually tastes unlike what you get in the market. Really good. I picked up two four bone beef ribs which I smoked for eight hours. Extraordinary. Best I've had. Half a pork belly which will get a seven day cure next week and hickory smoked which I'll report on later. read more

Great butcher spot for what they promote on their website- jerky, beef, italian and breakfast sausage. I purchased their house-made Italian and breakfast sausage and ribeye bone in and boneless. Surprisingly, the winner of the lot was the breakfast sausage! All natural casings (not collagen), very flavorful, light and not over greasy when cooked. Staff was nice and informative, offering to make any type of cut if not available within their display. Additionally, they let me sample any jerky options that i might be interested in. Been coming here for years for the beef eaters but just had a bad experience on the customer service end. Guy behind the counter pushed me into buying twice the amount of meat I asked for in the wrong cut. Asked him if they had a certain cut of beef and he responded "is that one not good enough?" And pointed to a stand alone, unmarked, cut of meat, as if I was supposed to know the cut of meat by looking at it. Said I would take it because I was stupidly embarrassed, and then his coworker pointed out that it was not actually the cut of meat I wanted and it was twice the quantity I had asked for. So now I have two pounds of ???, and I spent the whole ride home wondering what the hell just happened. Im sure it will taste good, but still a little irritating. I've given this butcher shop 5 star ratings and I will return BUT... My last visit (Thursday, 9/2) was stressful. I was "served" by a cocky young man with brown hair, maybe late teens or early 20s (although I'm a bad judge of age.) I was looking for beef heart. He brought out a HUGE frozen heart that was so big it looked like it came from a Buffalo and advised me he couldn't "prep it", he had to sell it whole. I didn't want that quantity of beef (I couldn't have fit that in my freezer.). I then asked about chicken hearts and he brought out a 1-pound package of frozen hearts which I purchased. Of concern, this food-handler's mask did not cover his nose. When I mentioned it he commented that it slips off but he did not fix it. So I asked if he had been vaccinated to which he replied, "yes." Because of his attitude I asked which vaccine he'd received. After a little pause he said, "Johnson." As he turned away I glanced a little smirk on his face. I said aloud to a fully masked young man smiling (not smirking) coworker, "I don't believe him, do you?" He smiled and shook his head, no. I'm SO disappointed that this is tolerated! Frankly, I'm disappointed this is an employee and hope he's not related to the owner. I'd be surprised. I know employees are hard to find these days but they do not need employees like this turning away their customers with their lousy attitudes. I've always found this shop to have wonderful employees and management and shop there as often as possible (I buy all my meat there but there's only me so I can't buy that much.) I'd fire this guy today. Makes me mad just remembering that visit. Follow-up - I received a great apologetic message from the owner. He will deal with his "cocky" employee. Some people have Las Vegas. I have Golden Steer. This place is awesome! Great selection of meat! All of my "best of" dinners have been sourced from here. I am especially partial to their beef ribs (I get them in plate form) and their skirt steak (WAY WAY WAY better than anywhere else). On top of that, they have a great selection of beer, sauces, cooking wood and the lump charcoal they sell is primo quality. Each and every one of these stars is for the candied bacon. Smokey sweet goodness with a kick to it. A pound for about $10... I brought a bowl of this bacon to my book club and everyone went crazy over it. It's going to be my new potluck go-to in a pinch and I can't wait to try their other offerings. I introduced myself and then found that besides having a great selection of quality meats (including fresh goat) they even have wine, beer, eggs and other "staples' an apartment dweller might be keen to find in their "local." It's been fun getting to know the people who work here. The owner has been here something like 50 years which in Bellevue years is a century. Good selection of meats to be found at Golden Steer. A bit unexpected in an aging strip mall in Bellevue. The interior of the store seems like straight out of Pleasantville. Though the selection is very modern. The beef is the big reason to come here. A lot of different cuts available here along with some nice looking gourmet burgers. Prices are a bit higher than your local QFC, though the quality is better. They also have a great selection of sausages and marinated meats. I did also see some Bavarian sausages and ham. Even salmon, though I wonder why it is sold here. May be better to just go to the Uwajimaya up the street for fish. Picked up some maple breakfast sausage links ($4.99/lb.) and some Maui boneless short ribs ($9.99/lb.). The sausage was decent as was the ribs. Not sure if I would make the extra effort to come here specifically though. I am fine with the selection at QFC. I guess I am not picky. The selection gets four stars, but I have to knock off a star for sanitary reasons. Grabbing the sausage with your bare hands does not fly for me. Come on, use some gloves. read more

I called ahead to get veal for a french ragout called a blanquette de veau. I paid $30 for 2 pounds and I had to remove about a quarter of it as it was fat and hard stuff. This meat looked like the kind I'd use for dogs.... I'm extremely disappointed because this dish requires veal meat of good quality (aka muscles only). I went to Golden Steer the day before valentines day to pick up some Tenderloins/Filets for my Girlfriend and I. They were $29.99/lb, so a little pricier than your QFC/Safeway steak, but oh man they were delicious. Especially coming from Brandt Beef. I assume they were PRIME grade beef, it at least tasted that way, and it was delicious. I spent $50 on the two steaks total, but if I got the same thing from Met Grill or Ruth's Chris, it easily would've cost $120+. I highly recommend Golden Steer, and will be making my way there more often to try out some rib eyes and porter houses they had which looked delicious. BTW the joint was very clean, the staff was very quick, knowledgeable, and friendly (very important for a first time customer such as myself). ~G *Correction*..so turns out the Beef Grade is CHOICE, but on certain days (like the day I bought my steak) given the marbling of the fat...looks like they had PRIME grade for sale..so works for me. read more

First things first, I LOVE me some filet mignon (beef tenderloin). It is my favorite cut of steak. I LOVE Golden Steer's filet's, they really have some top quality, delicious stuff in here. I've been cheap in the past and tried to get away with grocery store beef tenderloin, it is not nearly as good as the stuff Golden Steer sells. Now, if I want beef tenderloin for cooking at home this is the ONLY place I get it from. Second, this place smells AMAZING! To me it smells like childhood (however demented that sounds) because when I was a child every Saturday morning my Mom used to take me to the butcher with her to pick up meats. So when I walk in here and I smell the smokey, meaty aroma of yummy it just makes my heart melt too. Third, they have just about every type of meat you'd want in here. So many cuts, so many different things, so much choice! My husband loves all their different jerky selections. Lastly, the service is wonderful! This place is more expensive than the grocery store meat but I promise, this stuff is way better quality. Love Golden Steer! read more

(Grilled hot dog sections wrapped in bacon is a crowd pleasing appetizer while the grill is heating up) Jerky and Sausages - made in house, great combinations of flavor, plenty of loose sausage options. The building is easy to miss if you haven't been here before, the interior is very clean and doesn't smell (which could not be said for some sketchier butcher shops in Indiana), the guy working the counter was really very nice, the prices were competitive for the quality, and the Bock Wurst that we purchased were super delicious. We came here for Wurst to round out our Oktoberfest party details and I'm glad that we came all of the way out to Bellevue to do so. Have been several times. Family favorites are the pork shoulder ($2.39/lb) and the Maui flank steaks ($10.99/lb). Differentiator for Golden Steer is clearly the service, which is second to none. I've never had to wait, the staff is ridiculously polite and helpful and they even have a candy jar for the kids. I also like the bagged wood chips (apple/cherry/etc.), which I toss on the grill with some Wicked Good charcoal from Rich's, down the street. One moderately-annoying thing for me is the political crap I have to deal with in the store. "Imagine Peace" sign in the window, life-size Obama cut-out and John Lennon stuff everywhere.
