I've had pork binagoongan before and really enjoyed its rich, savory shrimp paste flavor, so I asked if this was similar. The staff member explained it was a bowl of rice topped with a little bagoong (Filipino shrimp paste) and the meat. I originally wanted the chicken cutlet version, but it would've taken about 15 minutes, while the pork was ready in 10, so I went with the pork. Unfortunately, the dish wasn't what I was expecting. There was very little shrimp paste flavor, and it ended up tasting more like a pork cutlet served over rice with cucumbers than a true binagoongan-inspired dish. If you're expecting that distinctive, bold bagoong flavor, you may be disappointed as I was. I also tried the chicken empanada. It was decent with a nice flavor, and I appreciated that it used the traditional Filipino-style thicker pastry rather than the flakier, crispier style common in many South American empanadas. It wasn't anything extraordinary, though, and it tasted like it had probably been sitting in the warmer for a while instead of being freshly baked. This was only one meal, and I'm still open to trying some of their other menu items because a few looked promising. While eating, I noticed trays of Cajun-style seafood boils coming out to nearby tables--interesting to see, even if it's not really my thing. As for the food, the sinigang delivered. The broth had a nice, balanced tang--sour but not overpowering--and it really hit the spot after the hike.
