I don't know why this place has quite such a low rating - it's relatively clean, has a big and decently maintained weight room - I rarely have to wait more than a couple of minutes for a rack. Staff are polite and friendly if not particularly proactive. It's cheap. It's not hugely smartly maintained but it is cheap so... If cardio machines are your jam I can understand that there might be locations with better maintained treadmills but for what I want this checks all the boxes. read more

Okay, you need to take all that you read with a grain of salt. Am I a gym rat? No. Do I lift plenty of weights? No. Am I just a girl trying to lose some weight, take advantage of their group classes (albeit they aren't at great times), and use their cardio cinema? You betcha. This gym has what you need if you're just trying to be active and healthy. The machines do have some issues, sometimes they're not attended to right away and you can tell they aren't well-maintained, but they have everything you could ask for. Ellipticals, treadmills, stair-masters, rowing machines, bikes, and this weird step thing I don't really know. They also have weights. I sometimes use the machines becaue I cannot do free-weights. I like it here. Taylor signed my sister and me up, and with the family plan for their step-above-basic membership plan, we're paying $99 a month. A little steep, but we get to use their body-scanner machine that tells me how much fat I have on my body. Facility is fine. Nothing spectacular. Customer service is ok. The people that work at all locations are friendly, but not sincere. Child care. Costs $12/mo. per child. When you drop your kids off, they are placed in front of a tv for the entire duration of your workout. Canceling membership. Impossible. You sign a form at the desk and the 20 year old representative gives you the wrong form to fill out and you're left paying another month. You fill out the right form on March 1st, then you get billed on April 1st again. You are informed that there is a 30 day cancellation term. You explain that there are 31 days in March and that you should not have been billed on April 1st. The morons in the gym don't have an answer but can't help. You try to call the corporate offices. They won't return your call. You dispute the transaction with your credit card. This takes months. Since the credit card gives you back your money, Gold's starts a long process of billing $20 for not finishing the contract with multiple calls and emails. This gym is just not worth it. Go to one of their competitors. You get more for your money and you can deal with professionals. read more

Okay... so this is a very attractive gym.... probably has all the things one would need to get fantastically in shape. However, as is prone to happen in a lot of bro-centric gyms (no offense, everyone deserves a good workout), I have a hard time feeling comfortable working out here. I joined specifically to work on my backside, as that is the big thing these days, and have only one time felt comfortable enough to saunter over to that side of the gym. I typically try to get some sort of glute activation by incline walking on the treadmills upstairs, and using the seated press downstairs in the far corner. Admittedly, I wish I could just 'woman up' and stop being a gym chicken, but I digress... the reason for my exceptionally low review however is the disappointment I have suddenly found in what I momentarily thought to be a really good thing. I have seriously considered canceling my membership and going somewhere like Planet Fitness, but this is soooo close to where I live, and I like the staff so I really had hoped to make it work. So today (as I sit here writing this, btw) I was ecstatic to discover a small hidden room with the words Lady Gold's above the door. Not that this was in anyway advertised mind you, not even in the ladies room, but for a brief moment I felt that management had heard the cries of the countless gym-chicken masses, and set aside a small area for us 'beginners'. Alas, I was greatly disappointed. More so even than had I never discovered this area at all. It is such a pitiful collection of extremely outdated equipment and random nonsense as to be likened to a storage room, or graveyard for useless gym junk. It saddens me that what could have been a really helpful 'launch pad' for those of us getting our nerve up to use the equipment in the 'boys area' is so unbelievably poorly setup, especially considering the current emphasis on glutes. I truly hope that someone in management reads this review and fixes what I'm sure is fondly referred to as Lazy Gold's amongst the employees, to better address the stereotypically bro-culture that Gold's has been met with for decades. As it stands, Lady Gold's holds about as much seeming understanding of gender dynamics as a 1980's frat boy movie. As I sit here surrounded by what could have been a great idea, surrounded by equipment that should have been retired or discarded decades ago, I wish I'd never even seen this room. Do not use Golds Gym. There are many better options. The organization itself is has issues at the corporate and support levels and this specific location has really gone down hill. They keep charging my account months after I cancelled my membership and are completely inflexible in even having a normal human conversation about the "valid charges" even though I haven't used the gym in 9 months due to theft and safety issues at this location. I'm truly disappointed to have to write this post, as up until recently I've had nothing but wonderful experiences at GG. I was a regular who staff knew by name. I went almost every day and loved it. I recently moved to a new location and needed to cancel my membership. I asked an employee and was told that my membership would end 30 days after I cancel it. Charges usually occur on the 7th and my move was to take place on March 8th. I cancelled my membership on Feb 8th and was assured that February would be my last charge. I budgeted accordingly. Then they charged me again in March. I called to have the charge reversed because it must have been a mistake. I was told they check with management. I called back a few days later and I was told that it was not a mistake, that I was lucky not to have been charged an additional time, that if given the wrong information I should have asked for a manager -how would I know I had been given the wrong information until it is too late?- and that I should have read my contact from over a year ago more carefully. I was even repeatedly interrupted to the point where I had to ask for him to please let me finish a sentence. I've never been treated in such a rude and abrasive manner. I know that cancelling a gym membership can be difficult, but I thought that GG was different. I am infinitely disappointed with the way things have ended. Should I ever need a gym again, I will not sign up for GG, nor will I recommend it. The front desk people? Wonderful. Cardio cinema? Fun and effective. The treatment from management? 4:45am is not a reasonable time to wake up, no matter what. New baby's hungry? Swap out the alcohol on a margarita machine for milk, set it up over the crib, and sleep tight. Home intruder? Lock your room door, let the dog eat him, call the po-po, go back to sleep. But I do it. It's stupid., but it's also THE BEST THING EVER. 5:15 morning workouts mean you finished fine-tuning your personal temple before the sun's up, and before you know just exactly what happened. Happy hour after work? Don't mind if I do because today's already been PWNED. My favorite instructor here is Boni. She's always reminding you to "get that lift, get that squeeze." I got it, Boni. I'm feeling it. Let's say waking up early isn't an option (damn you, late night karaoke/dancing/fun events). There are a ton of classes after work. Some days I roll in for step - it ain't your mama's step, kids. Burpees, jump squats, and step runs are commonly incorporated here. My calves and butt cheeks wail for days. I do wish they had more BodyAttack, the highest-intensity cardio at Gold's, but it's all good. Every quarter there's a launch of all these classes (Attack, Step, Flow/Yoga, Pump) with new music and torture mechanisms, and they go all out with prizes and free air. They keep late hours and the staff's friendly, even at 5:15am. They must be crazy. We must all be crazy. (ETA: Eating nutrient-rich foods within 30 minutes of a workout maximizes nutrient absorption. I pop any combination of these in a blender: 0% Greek yogurt, almond milk, coconut juice, kale, spinach, papaya, mango, pineapple, apples, bananas & any fruit you think is overly-ripe. This would probably be considered a review for Gold's Gym policies in general. I have been a member of Better Bodies in Denver, and 24 hour fitness. I am certain there fees were more reasonable ($15 a month at Better Bodies) and I don't think their cancellation fees and policy were quite as evil. I have joined Rogue and spend most of my time outside running. I have also discovered about myself that I don't like the gym environment. I am perfectly happy working out at home and doing my run in groups. I don't need grunting men lifting weights that they can't lift. That ruins my zen. Now I will admit that apparently I am deaf and didn't hear when he told me that they have a cancellation policy created by the Devil himself. I will admit fault in this case for not paying attention. So long story short, unless I move, join the military or have some sort of medical issue I cannot quit this place unless I pay them the full amount due on the next 15 months of this contract. I love coming to Gold's and have been a member for a very long time! One thing I can not stand for some months now, is how they only have 1 person working in the kids club! Not to mention how they decide to close the kids club because they don't have anyone to work in there! I went to 2 golds and 1 was closed and the other was at max capacity! How the hell do i pay monthly for this crap!? If you don't have the people to operate the kids club or you are going to be closing it every chance you get, then close it for good and stop charging people! Sorry for this being long but there were multiple issues dealing with Gold's. I was a member since 2001, when it was a World's Gym. I enjoyed going to this location because it was clean and had a large area for weights. You didn't have to wait too long for any machine. The cardio machines were nice and the classes gave a good workout. They were always updating the equipment and exercises. The facility was not the issue. The issue was billing and customer service. I had setup auto-draft from my card and that's where my nightmare began. My card had expired and they never contacted me to let me know. They were still letting me use the facilities. Then one day my friend was working the front and let me know that my membership had expired. So I went in to take care of it. It was told they can activate my membership if I paid. I was perfectly fine with that but they also said they have to charge me more now because the price I was at was no longer available. I asked why I was able to be at that price before with no issues and they said it was because I was grandfathered in. I didn't see why I wasn't still grandfathered since I back-paid everything. But I finally just gave in and agreed to the new price even though it was doubled what I was paying. I was able to get on a family plan with my sister and her husband. Everything was good till recently when the card on the account once again expired. This time they said they can activate but I had to pay $60. Again they were trying to change my membership. I said no thank you and wanted to cancel my membership. They told me that I would have to cancel online and that they can't do it at the gym. They also said I had to pay for another month because that is their policy for cancellation. I asked if I can take care of bill online and they said no it had to be done at the gym. So I gave my card info and asked is it was setup for auto-pay so I don't have to worry about coming in to pay for the extra month they were going to charge me. They said it was setup and I was good to go. When I asked for the receipt they said their computers were down. I said I wasn't leaving till I got one and the manager had to be called for assistance. She wasn't able to print a receipt but was able to print me my balance and last few transactions. I went home and tried to cancel online, as I was instructed. After 30 mins of search their site I finally found something on canceling and I had to call a number. I called and they explained the extra month charge and I was all set for cancellation.. Fast forward a bit and I received a letter from their collection dept saying I owe money. I went to the gym to clear up the confusion. They said their computers were down again and could not pull up my membership. I asked if I could go to another Gold's and was told it was all their network. Same manager said she could possibly pull it up but it was going to be 5 mins. I said I was willing to wait. She asked for receipt and confirmation number of cancellation. I explained I had no receipt because last time they had "computer issues" as well. I showed her the printout she gave me. She left and came back after a while and said it was their policy to charge for the extra month after notice of cancellation. She said I didn't pay so they were charging me late fee as well. I said I'm aware of the policy but that had setup auto-pay last time I was there. She said it wasn't their fault they my card didn't take. I said it did take because I was charged the last time. She said to take it up with billing. I said last time they told me I would have to clear up payment issues at the gym. She said I should contact customer care.I asked for number and she said I should have it. I asked for the number again. She finally gave me. I walked out to my car an called the number and it directed me to promotions. They said that sometimes number changes and they can't transfer me to customer care. So after search their site for 20 mins for the customer care number, I went back in and ask the front desk if I had the correct number. Guy at desk said I did. I ask if he would mind calling the number and he did. The number went to customer care. I tried calling again and it went to promotions. I looked at my paperwork and finally found the number and notice it was differnet from the one the manager had given me. I asked him to check the number again and again he said it was right without really looking. I asked one final time and this time he did notice the wrong number. Needless to say I am done dealing with Gold's Gym. All this could have been handled very differently by them and I would have stayed a customer. 13 years means absolutely nothing to them. read more

The Gold's Gym I patronized in Amarillo served free coffee and loaned out towels. The women's locker room was built with more corners to hide behind and a floor-to-ceiling wall of televisions separated the body-builders getting in their cardio from the rest of us. It was respectable in these ways. I loved my Amarillo gym. Sigh. Here, there is no coffee, no hiding, and paper towels and antibacterial soap are provided to wipe down equipment but nothing to wipe off the sweat. Like Jim L. said, it's so crowded after work, getting an eliptical or treadmill machine is a crap shoot. Finding parking makes you so anxious you are then obliged to find a space because you must run to release the tension it caused. It seriously sucks here, but I'm stuck because the Ben White gym uses a radio station frequency system for its boob tubes and here I can just plug in. read more

Gold's gym sucks. Or at least this location does. I wanted a three month membership, as I was only in town for the summer. My dad figured he would add me to his membership, and the manager assured us repeatedly that we could do a three month membership because I was moving, which is an acceptable reason to "end the contract." After three months this apparently was not the case, and they refused to end the contract because there is a Golds Gym location where I was moving to. As for the gym itself: they have plenty of equipment, but almost every machine I used had some kind of problem. Some of the treadmills would spontaneously shut down, or the heart rate sensors didn't work. Many of the machines would have signs on them saying they were being worked on. This is my what, sixth update? Well, we have hit the fork in the road, Gold's. I am leaving you. There is no turning back. You see, I have a true love and that is running. I have been a casual runner most of my life but just last year, I got bit by the half marathon bug and started training way more seriously. Living in Texas, lord knows I needed a gym with some good, well-ventilated treadmills for summer and winter. You know, for those ten months where it is either too cold or too hot to run outside in Austin. Your new manager has fixed the place up great. It is cleaner than it ever has been. But then you decided to change your treadmills to new fancy treadmills that go downhill. Sigh. They are about a foot and a half off the ground and I am afraid of heights and I am afraid to run any faster than a ten minute mile on them and that just won't do. You kept a few of the old ones, but none of them are under any fans. Did you notice that the people actually RUNNING were using the old ones??!! Only the walkers are using the new ones. I'm fifty freaking years old and I still train hard, but I refuse to break my neck on a platform that far off the ground. It makes me woozy. I will miss you Gold's. But I have to run. You should probably ask a variety of actual runners before you change up all your equipment. read more

If you're a stalker of mine, or looking at my list, you'll know that I prefer the classes at gyms. I've got to have someone kicking my butt. I can do the treadmills and such, but I don't push myself as hard as I probably should. That being said, I usually only go to this gym for the classes. I like the class-room here. It's spacious and I like the mirrors (two-way, heh, heh) in the back. The front desk people don't seem to care a rip about me. (I'm big on customer service) I don't always feel totally welcome. I have used the showers here. They're fine. Not wonderful, but then again, I'm in a gym, so I don't expect much. A few more benches in the shower area would be nice. I do like the carpeted locker rooms and large lockers. I also like that there's different sections of the locker room, so everyone's not all up in each other's business. There's also curtained change areas, if you prefer. I also like that there are cardio machines upstairs--that they're separate from the weight machines. The downside to that, though, is that when I'm on them, I can't secretly giggle at the men who try to lift way more than they really can... read more

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. They operate with very shady business practices. When I signed up a year ago I was "helped" by one of the managers Minori J. She was so pushy and speed through the contract information so I ended up leaving with without signing up just because of Minori's behavior. I came back a week later and signed up with another gentlemen who was just a week into the position. I signed a 1 year contract and paid for my last months membership. I asked for a hard copy of the contract and did not receive it till almost a month after my registration. Circle back to May 2015. I was ready to cancel my contract knowing that it ended that month and that I had paid my last months membership when I signed up. Apparently 1 year memberships revert to month to month after they finish. This was not relayed to me when I signed up. Not only are they going to keep billing me until July but its basically 3 months of unused gym membership. I contacted Gold's corporate and those stupid goats only repeated the same scripted lines to me on my several attempts to contact them. I will be reporting their shady business practices to BBB as well as filing a formal complaint with the FCC. read more

Let's be honest, no one signs on at Gold's Gym expecting white glove service. However, I did expect honesty and when it comes to their billing and pricing - I don't think I got it. Short version: I had to go to the facility TWICE to get my cancellation "started." A mere 30 days and 2 billing cycles later I will actually be free from this contract that cost significantly more $$ than the 24/7 Fitness which is directly across the street, cleaner, bigger, cheaper AND has more class options. This gym is my favorite Gold's Gym in the Austin metro area! I've been to nine Gold's gyms total. What I Like About this Gym: - Wide variety and good condition of equipment - Cozy and clean locker room (it's always clean when I'm there in the evenings) - Location of equipment (cardio on 2nd floor in quieter area where you can zone out to personal music or one of the many new TVs) - Layout of equipment (equipment is not crowded together and the ones I've used are placed where you won't be awkwardly facing another stranger) - Open feeling in the indoor space (Aside from the classrooms, all the weight equipment is in a huge central room) - Quiet -- background music is not blaring like most other Gold's - Clean (equipment, floors, and workout areas look clean) Things I Dislike about this Gym: - Narrow parking spots - Tedious to get out if you want to head north on Mopac to go home - Wished the ab machines weren't placed in the center of the main workout area - Parking lot at night is a little dark, but the surrounding area seems to be a nice one - Driving there from North Austin is annoying with the stop-and-go post-rush-hour traffic on Mopac read more

This facility itself is OK. Some of the machines occasionally broken, but it is a decent place to work out. But for this price, I'm sure there is way better in Austin. Like other people have said, though - the Gold's Gym cancellation process is a nightmare. I won't go into the details of how some of this was my fault for being naive (and it definitely was) but the customer service when you try to confirm your cancellation is terrible. Policies are completely arbitrary, and there is no way of obtaining written confirmation of your cancellation and the last date your card will be charged. The representatives are argumentative and rude, and the employee I originally spoke with when I confirmed my cancellation misrepresented the process. The staff stole my money. I had a debt of about $120 from when I was out of the country that I paid off. Shannon (the blonde one) and one of the other workers was there while I was making my payment in cash. I trusted the establishment so when they asked if I wanted a receipt, I told them, "no, it's fine"(big mistake as they cannot be trusted). A good *2 months* later I receive a notice about another due for 112. I went over it with the other manager (Adam) and found out it was from the same 3 months the other due was from that I had paid. I then proceeded to tell him I had already made a payment for 120, and lord behold, it 'wasn't in the system'. I stood there for the next half hour explaining that I did pay (gave him the date and the time and details), while he was basically indirectly (and in a very rude and unprofessional manner) calling me a liar. I noticed Shannon and I asked her to speak with us as she had witnessed my payment taking place. When asked, she denied knowing anything about it, even though she had been there and had talked to me in the period in which I had made my payment. The short guy with curly hair and glasses had also been present (usually works day shift), and I had asked him if he had recalled it, and he replied, "yes". Unfortunately they did not want to hear his input, and subsequently sent me on a way with a flimsy promise to "look into things". Needless to say, I paid my due on time for this month, and they cancelled my account way before the next payment was due. So I lost money, again, paying for services that are now being denied to me, and we ALL know those monthly dues are NOT cheap. Very dissatisfied with the management and staff present, and if I were the owner of the establishment I definitely would not want people that are capable of stealing cash and openly denying it in the face of the customer, representing it. read more

Admittedly, I'm new to commercial gyms as I only recently retired from the military where I had access to a gym for free on base. I DO know what I look for, however: - Clean floors - Maintained equipment - Varied equipment - Availability of cleaning supplies (spray, paper towels) - Friendly staff I would say this particular Gold's meets all of the above, although falters slightly on the friendliness...but only slightly. My most positive accolade has to be that my trainer Debbie Proctor is amazing. She's not only knowledgable and encouraging, but she's extremely attentive to my program. She truly cares and it's obvious she puts a lot of thought into my workouts. When you're paying the rates Gold's charges for training, you want to feel like you're getting your money's worth. I do. This location keeps equipment in good shape, the floors clean, and the supplies in stock. I'm happy to continue going there. read more

Probably the worst gold's in the Austin area. Weights are never placed in the correct spots and/or are just left on the floor. Staff is not as friendly as other gold's. Is consistently dirty, with trash cans overflowing and paper towels always on the gym floor. Plus, rarely opens on time on the weekends. Since my original review, this Gold's has gotten a new General Manager and a new Operations Manager. The prior ones were great, but the new guys have taken it up a notch. For one thing, they're both very customer-centric people - they just have that "what can I do to make this better?" mindset, which is a super trait in a manager of any kind. Often, gym managers are holed up in their offices doing paperwork; not these two. Very active and involved. They've upped the ante in terms of classes, equipment, maintenance - even the movies in the "cardio cinema" area. They cover all the bases, and consistently seek member feedback to keep things running smoothly. I've always thought this was a good gym, but now it's a *great* gym. I have been a golds gym member for years. I went in to cancel my membership to start my active and fit membership, they said told me they would cancel. A month later I find out they did not cancel it and have no record of it being canceled. so I pay the past due fee and fill out paperwork to try and cancel it again. Turns out they also never canceled my membership so now I have another past due fee. (this time I refused to pay because it was clearly their fault and I already paid it once) they said they would talk to someone about waiving it. They never got back to me. I keep getting calls and emails about my past due fee. I talked to 5 different people at three different locations trying to get this freaking membership canceled. It is not FINALLY canceled but I am still receiving emails and calls about the past due fee even after I sent an email to corporate explaining my situation. I will never get a golds membership again and encourage everyone I know to do the same. read more

I've been a member at Gold's for over 5 years. I also had a membership at the gym across the street, but when I had to choose which membership to keep, I chose Gold's. 1. The gym is clean. The staff does a great job keeping the equipment, bathrooms, and pretty much everything else clean. They even have spray bottles of sanitizer on every paper towel dispenser for you if needed. 2. Parking is never a problem. I've always been able to find a parking spot and not have to circle around the lot to wait for one to open up. 3. There is hardly ever a wait for a machine. There's even a women's section. 4. The kid's club staff is great. The same ladies have been there since I've started to put my kids in there. Plus, childcare is included in the membership fee. 5. This location has a great variety of group classes (which is mostly how I work-out) and all the instructors are so friendly and helpful. Members are not just the typical muscle-shirt wearing people, you really have a variety of people from all walks of life who work-out there. read more

I've been going to Gold's for years. First in Tampa and now in Austin. The times that classes were offered weren't the most convenient for me, but I could make them work. In fact, I found a few that I love. But sadly this and other Gold's locations have decided that it doesn't matter whether clients enjoy these classes. Instead, they reduced the number of classes to so few that it's never convenient for me and they replaced the ones that were (e.g., Tonia's GGX challenge class on Thursdays AM) with a class that's an additional fee! If I'm going to pay $80/month, you better believe I'm expecting more. I left for Lifetime this month. I hate paying this much, but now I don't have to worry about whether there's a class at a time that works for me. Get it together Gold's. You're losing a LOT of clients. read more

SCAM. THEY SOMEHOW OBTAINED NEW CREDIT CARD INFO AFTER I CANCELLED MY CARD TO AVOID FURTHER CHARGES AND MY NEW ACCOUNT WAS CHARGED! How is this not criminal? I signed up for a 3-month commitment and was told the membership was month to month after that. My commitment started in January, ending in March. I went in to cancel my membership at the beginning of May. They told me I would be billed through the next month even though the next billing period hadn't started and my commitment was over. I filled out cancellation paperwork and left. I also cancelled the card to avoid further charges. I received calls that my payment method had been declined and did not provide updated authorization to charge my card. But upon opening my card statement I found charges on the new account number not only through May, but also June and July. Go somewhere else. Complete scam artists. read more

The basics are in place for this location, but the staff and management could really take things up a notch. Here are areas for improvement: 1. Front desk: I come in 3-4 times per week and every single time, the front desk staff are busy talking with each other and barely look up to greet me or anyone entering the gym. This starts the customer experience off on a sour note - a friendly greeting is a simple fix. 2. Organization: Signs are generally out of place. For example, the sign about the media room being out of service was up for days after the room was fixed. 3. General staff attitude: I've worked in customer service and management for years. Staff should never, ever gossip or bad mouth customers, especially in full hearing range of other customers. This is especially common with male employees commenting on female guests. It's gross and unprofessional. Long story short: asking staff to pay attention, get off their phones, stop the grade school gossip sessions and generally care about their jobs would greatly improve this gym experience. You're helping people get back in shape and/or improve their lives. It's important work. This location serves new moms, senior citizens with health issues, people preparing for races and other competitions - all very scary and crucial life stages. There are plenty of big screen tv's for me, and a lot of the treadmills and elliptical trainers that have small lcd tv's attached. I especially like the indoor cycling (spinning & rpm) classes with Cathy, Cassia or Deedee. With competitors nearby, it's not as crowded as it was several years ago. Current management seems fine, and front desk folks are friendly enough as far as I'm concerned. Also, what I like about Gold's is the convenience of a downtown location and a suburban location. So, if you get bored with one location, there are four different south to southwest locations from I-35 & Wm. Cannon to Oak Hill and Bee Caves. read more
