Saw a lot of old negative reviews on here but I thought I'd chime in after the gym changed ownership about a year ago. I have tried every gym in the area (I used to do day passes at every gym within an hour radius while on school break so I have tried other golds gyms, 24hrs, pfits, retro, crunch, blink, powerhouse, you name it) and this is my favorite gym in north jersey. The new owner replaced a lot of the equipment including the floors and treadmills while leaving a lot of the old classic equipment which I love combined with new fantastic Atlantis machines. The gym also has a large turf area and basketball court which is a huge plus for athletic training. Also a sauna, but the best part of the gym is the community, a great mix of old classic body builders, young guys, and the staff is super friendly. My only complaints would be a new filtered water fountain would be great, there are multiple old ones that don't taste great and I've heard the town has given the owners a problem with replacing pipes. They put a gate in the front which was a big annoyance at first but it works well now and helps keep non members from sneaking in, and the parking lot has the largest potholes I've ever seen and they always come back despite them repatching them, it needs a full pave but I believe that is on the town and out of the gyms control. Also on some week nights one of the trainers runs an absolutely obnoxious workout class and blasts music on top of the gym music while taking up the entire turf area. She could easily use the empty studio room that they don't use at all. Still one of my favorite gyms out of hundreds I've been to considering a reasonable price! read more

Very convenient location right off RT-46 and RT-80. My favorite thing about this gym is the large turf area with the pull-up bars. Plenty of room for stretching, calisthenics, lifting, and moving. Large variety of equipment and machines throughout the gym. There is also a small boxing area, basketball court, studio rooms for classes, barber, tanning and physical therapy services available. All that being said, they have been renovating a lot of the gym (awesome)--but the renovations seem to be happening at a snail's pace (not awesome). The half-done renovations sitting for months start to look...not so good. Locker-room is nothing special. Honestly, if anything needed a renovation it would be that. For the membership price, the majority of front desk employees could be a little friendlier. A quick "Hi, enjoy your workout" as you walk-in, goes a long way. The maintenance guy grinds hard as hell, and greets almost every member! Take a page from his book. read more

And told the front desk "let her wait" after 10 min he passed by and didn't even pay attention to me waking babj to his work outs . New to the area & started coming to this gym for about 6 months. In that time frame a new owner came in so waiting to see what changes are made but from my experience prior to the change in ownership have been pleasurable. Well organized machines for allowing quick & efficient circuit training, dedicated areas for spin classes, yoga, & boxing training. Biggest turf area I've seen in any gym (is restricted by training classes some days). Turf is well organized with everything you will need, no need to walk from one side of the gym to find a piece of equipment you will need. Personal trainers are honest & respectful when having their clients & sharing the space. Been to other mainstream gyms & during my preferred hours it was always to packed & just didn't enjoy my experience. Only being here at Gold's for 6 months but have met nothing but hard working/genuine people here. Never have trouble getting on a machine or at least finding an alternative close by. Side note: I've left PowerBeat headphones casing twice in the locker room & actual headphones in a different scenario & it was either in the same place it was or at the front desk. Lastly, only two things in my experience that can be approved it the stair master machine furthest away from the entrance the last 2 months has been glitchy & screen won't stop when needed (still a problem as of Wednesday 23rd 2024). The other, the wood in the men's sauna is coming off needs to be secured down & reseal the bottom of the sauna door, cold air gets in & throws off the temperature. I am a paying member of Golds Gym Totowa. The monthly fee is not very cheap yet I am being forced off of the basketball courts so that non-members can play pickle ball even though they were only using one half, leaving the other half wide open (there is a net that is easily put up to separate the two sides of the court). I was told to exit the court because my playing basketball was "too distracting" to the pick ball players who once again, were not members. It is sad to see that Gold's Gym values selling out to non-members while us paying members are put to the side. read more

I recently signed up at golds gym in Totowa and have had a great experience until today, after my workouts I like to get some cardio in by playing basketball. Unfortunately that is usually ruined by the owner with his pickleball. They come in and kick off the basketball people for the pickleball players who are NOT MEMBERS. Us members have nothing to do to change this and are forced to leave. as members who are paying $40 a month should have the right to play basketball whenever they want. DO NOT COME TO THIS GYM. read more

I have been a member of this gym for a very long time. This is the third owner and they are ruining this gym. Stop spending money on silly things, like an entrance that looks like a subway. Removing stairs to the treadmill deck and adding glass, COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY!! pickle ball, saunas. What needs to be fixed are the TREADMILLS! This is not a cross fit gym, this is the type of gym people lift weights and run/walk on treadmills. The new 6 in the front are terrible, no one wants to use them. The 10 in the back, maybe 6 work on a good day! One is on wobbly ground but works perfectly fine, move the ones that don't turn on and make room for the ones that work. The amount of frustrated gym patrons daily is unreal. At 6 am there should be plenty of treadmills, people have to walk away because none of them work! You are charging more per year with equipment that does not work. People need treadmills that work! Please before you join this gym, check to make sure there is adequate working cardio equipment. And to the owner: PLEASE FIX THE THINGS THAT NEED TO BE FIXED!! Glass walls surrounding old non working equipment is certainly not the answer. The review update is late but I believe this gym deserves a good shout out! New owners did an amazing job with the place. The walls have been repainted giving the place a fresh new look! Majority of the equipment have been changed and are up-to-date, the women's area has been redone and pretty much the whole place. There is no more racquet room as it had been turned into a brand new workout area fit for groups. There is also a new spin room and a boxing area. They have really done a great job uplifting the place that I have been coming back more often. The staff are nice and I love the new zumba 6:30 instructor, Brenda. I have been a member at this gym for almost 30 years. Always clean, always a friendly staff. It has been under new ownership for a few months now and it is really going downhill. New sauna, tanning machine and pickle ball while there is no cable and no tvs on treadmills work properly. We have been told the owner doesn't want to pay for it. The THREE new treadmills they brought in are terrible. They are putting money into things people do not use. Treadmills? ALWAYS in use. Please put money towards thing people actually use and make sure the treadmills and the tvs on them work properly. The new weights and benches are nice but how about some air conditioning???? It was 90 degrees yesterday and this morning the gym actually was LIKE A SAUNA at 5 a.m. NOT OKAY!! Not safe and unacceptable when people pay memberships, the AC should be on! I joined a few months ago and have been meaning to write this positive review as I don't think people these days talk about the good experiences . Donna signed me up and was seriously one of the nicest people I've ever encountered. She told me they strive for a family atmosphere and that's certainly the feel. A week or so after I was a member Donna introduced me to Jeff and he was very welcoming l. I do Training with Joe and he's been awesome as well. I have noticed differences in my physique as have other people . I have no issues with the equipment , machines, etc. my only issue is that much of the clientele here thinks that they don't need to wipe down machines after use. There are signs everywhere but I would say 80 percent of the people there don't give a crap and don't ever wipe down their machines when they are done. read more

I've been a member of this gym for over 7 years now and I really really like what the new owners have done with the place. The gym got a makeover, new classes, and great boxing room. I often go with friends to their gyms but I always admire that people at Golds are serious about working out. There's a great sense of community there and often when I go in the mornings i see the same familiar faces week in, week out. I highly recommend this gym for people who are serious about working out and changing their lives. read more

I came to this gym for the first time and as soon as I get in the front desk guy was extremely rude. Has an attitude for no reason. I can in w a smile and very friendly to him. I have had other friends complain about the same guy giving attitude to them as well on different occasions . Other than that the layout of the gym is nice, they had a few features that not all gyms have. The private woman area, the boxing area, and the fake grass area was nice. They had a few machines my original gym didn't have. However i Pay way less for my original gym that has better quality machines and weights. I got covid last year from this gym and informed Donna of this, it was February 2021. Because of my parent's state of health, it was a necessity to not go to the gym anymore especially one that was not exactly adherent to the mask mandate for every member. Sneaky as they may be (because times were hard waaa) I was still being charged through June. Without paying close attention to my bank account it went unnoticed for months, It was addressed via email. In which they had already sent it into collections. They are about fees, money, and their advancement on you. They are not about the commitment to health or their members. you have been warned about the sneaky ways in which they move. Not to mention, When I first joined I had to write a review about how filthy this place was in order for them to get up and clean it pre-covid. Imagine that yelp was never written I am sure that Jeffo wouldn't have cleaned a single thing pre-covid. Gum on the machines, blood on the bars...... Don't be fooled there's a commitment to this gym. I just moved back from the West Coast and have been trying different gyms in the area to see what works for me. I realized I missed my Gold's atmosphere and decided even though it was a longer commute than gyms closer to me I was willing to make the effort. However, when I arrived they informed me there's a 2 month commitment which I can't do because there aren't Gold's gyms in the city and I'm only in town for a month. read more

Definitely an older Gold's--takes me back to the 90's! :D Mistake me not--the equipment is newer, for the most part. The bathrooms/locker rooms are clean and well maintained. It's just that some of the fixtures and decor are a bit old-school. Dumbells feel a bit old-style too, but that could just be a personal preference. I like the newer ones that are rubbery on the outside, not metal. There are areas of the gym that could be a bit, um, cleaner-- but who are we kidding? I'm there to work out and there are way (WAY) dirtier places (like outside) that people could, and do, exercise. Not a huge deal and they do provide paper towels and spray for the machines. They have a smoothie bar that we have not tried so I cannot vouch for it. The layout is nice--open floor plan, a small ladies fitness room, fitness class room, basketball court (cold, temperature-wise. Brrr), additional workout spots, kickboxing/boxing/MMA area, racquet ball, childcare and 2 cardio areas. I like how the weight machines have signs hanging above each area that correlate to the muscle group they work. Some people come to the gym and are afraid to try a new piece of equipment (or any equipment at all) because they don't know what it works. This is a great and simple solution! One suggestion: Lay off the fans! It's cold enough as it is with the AC on. Overhead fans at full speed right above cardio areas is annoying and cold. I want to work up a sweat. I cannot in this cardio area. *We're members of another Gold's Gym in Knoxville TN, so I know nothing about their pricing or memberships. Andy, the gentleman who took us in as guests, was very warm and hospitable. He gave us the layout of the gym in a nutshell and told us to enjoy and let him know if we had any questions. These people have nothing better to do then to watch your every step and see if you are putting weights back etc..This gym was actually my backup gym as my main gym for the past 5 years is Signature fitness in Belleville, NJ. The only reason i tried this gym out is because my wife and I bought a house about 10 minutes away. I won't be coming back. After i bought the house something was telling me not to cancel my Signature fitness membership even though this gym was closer to home. My gym closed due to COVID & I was completely devastated to find a new one. I'd been a member of 24 hr fitness for almost 10 years! As a newer totowa resident, it made the most sense for me to sign up at Golds. It was the best decision I've ever made. The level of cleanliness I've experienced, especially during these troubling times, is amazing. The owners really enforce everyone wiping down their machines/areas before AND after you use it. They've adjusted the gym to give people plenty of room to woRk out safely. My favorite part of the gym is the women's area (although I used the entire gym) because there are times I'm looking to work out in more of a private setting. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because some of the (male) members think they're exempt from the rules and expose their nose from the mask. This isn't the fault of the owner's because they've made it very clear that everyone should be adhering to the mask rule. I would suggest having an employee walk around during peak hrs to ensure people are wearing the mask right. If you're on the fence about joining, just join. Reasonably priced, great owners. Love love love this place! Don't even know where to begin. Let's start with the awesome childcare. All of the ladies are super sweet and nice. My son loves it here and never wants to leave. Very clean as well. They truly care about the kids. My trainer HEATHER is the sweetest person I have ever met. Amazing trainer. Makes me feel super comfortable and always pushes me. And she works around my crazy schedule. Makes herself always available. Doesn't matter what time it is. The whole staff is amazing. Customer service is amazing as well. I never had any issues with changing my membership/ adding more or less training sessions. They always make it work for you. They truly make you feel like family!! This gym has fantastic clean equipment and the workers are very polite. I only give them a 2 star because I would not recommend signing a contract with them at all. You can only use their facility and no other golds gym unless you pay almost 40 dollars a month. Also they are not inforcing covid standards. People are walking around with no masks including some staff. Furthermore, the company they go through for payments etc. is terrible. I went to end my year-long contract and they asked me to pay a cancellation fee. How do I owe a cancellation fee if my contract is done? Customer services regarding membership is a nightmare, I been a member for years and been a month to month basis but apparently all the sudden my contract was changed according to golds to a yearly commitment . Good luck trying to ever get out of this membership if you have to . The gym is good at best overall but there are much better gyms in the area with same if not better equipment with much better customer services (Donna./new ownership 0 star review). and much more affordable. A family member is a member here and I have been here a few times with her. I'm torn about the rating cause many factors go into why some people will like it and some people wont. 1. This gym is not fancy or new or updated. It needs an update in many areas. The spi room is very 1990s and the cycles have been due for an upgrade since probably 1999. Equipment is hit or miss, but i'd say 80% of it is in good shape. 2).The locker room is not the cleanest. The showers have Dollar Store pink curtains that is just a breeding ground for bacteria. The sauna is more like a 3 person bench. Never been inside the sauna but from opening it I was like no. Very small and not the cleanest. Although the cleaning ladies there are very sweet and nice. 3). Staff is decent. Never encountered rude staff here. 4). The parking lot is the worst, seriously. Pot holes everywhere! Not little pot holes, legit craters! No lie! Also for a few months last summer one of the windows was replaced with tarp. Now to the reason why I can see some people would like this gym. This is not a gym you go to when you want luxury, updated style/equipment and maintenance. This is a muscle gym. 80% of the guys here are on steriods and on some heavy duty protein shakes. Most of the girls here look like Chyna the Wrestler. This isn't Equinox or NYSC. If your into bulking up, bodybuilding and bodybuilding competitions then this is the place for you. If not, you won't like the vibe. And it smells. I know it's a gym but this gym smells more than any other gym I've been too. Right when you walk in your hit with the smell and worse.... that wiff of heat. P.S. If you can, pay in cash and get a deal. They are willing to work with you. I got evacuated from Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC because of Hurricane Florence. This was the closest gym in the area I'm staying so I decided to give it a shot. Probably the best Golds I've ever been to. The owner is prior military and told me before knowing I was a member I could come workout for free! I went on a Saturday and stayed 15 mins prior to them closing. After my workout I went to purchase a protein cookie but they were already counting the registers. The owner took $3 out of his pocket and paid for it. I can't speak on the old management but the new guy is awesome and takes care of his own. I have to express again how AMAZING this gym is! I left a crappy gym to come here and I struggled to get a kick start with my workouts. I had enough of the slacking and I starting training with Gio the personal trainer here. With this being said, I look and fell so amazing because of the hard work and effort i'm putting in and I have only been training with him for 3 months!!! He is THE BEST!!! Not only are the trainers fantastic but they focus and care about you. Also, all the machines are new and nothing is ever broken. The staff is so welcoming and they make you feel at home. My husband and I signed up to Gold's Totowa after Crunch in Wayne stopped offering childcare. No regrets at all! The new owners have done a great job with the place. My 4 kids love going to Golds. Probably the only chain gym I'll ever belong to. Gym I used to go to was packed when there were 7 people in there. Small, rock music blaring, no "new-age" equipment, and I fuckin loved it. At first, I was hesitant to join; and break away from the raw gym style I was used to lifting in. After joining Golds in Totowa, I don't regret it at all. This place isn't the most up-to-date facility but let's be real, who needs style, technology, and up-to-date when all you need is some metal to get the clangin' and bangin'? If you're looking for a pretty gym, go somewhere else, but this place is old school and I love it! Most people are looking for convenience when they're at a gym, when you should be looking to go as far away from your comfort zone as possible. It's got machines for all body parts, all your cardio machines, a sizable free-weights section that leaves you hands smelling like metal, classes for the ladies, and even a basketball court. What more do you need? The only reason that I wouldn't give this place five stars is because the leg section is too small with not enough options. Everything else is great! read more

The gym is great and the staff is doing their best to keep up with covid standards on the surface atleast. However, 7/10 people walk around with their nose fully exposed, 3/10 have the mask completely off at times. I haven't seen one person be confronted for this by the staff, but not much you can say when their trainers are doing the same exact thing.
