So I've been a Retro member for about 8 years, but recently switched to FF, at the urging of my sons who go there (I went to a different location). After gyms reopened I went to FF mainly because I could see management and staff were 100% committed to safety and cleanliness. I'm not a germaphobe, but it's attention to detail that shows all how you really run your business. So the folks at FF get an A+! The gym itself is huge compared to any other Retros I've been up in NJ/NY, with a great array of machines to be included with the free weights. While things are closed right now for COVID guidelines, there's still plenty to get your workout in. If people could only put the dumbbells away correctly...JK! So with about a month in, I'm a convert to working out in Fairfield permanently. Thanks to everyone at this location that is part of a great team! read more

This is a no frills gym. The staff is friendly and the gym is clean. Don't expect a Lifetime fitness experience but it does the job. I go super early so it's never crowded when I go and the morning people are there just to workout and leave. read more

I was disappointed no where in the website (Fairfield gym) says the age of the child care!!! I have gone to all retro gyms in Nj with child care, & never had a problem bringing my child, he is 10mos old! They let us log in, after we had sign in they told us no! they don't take children who can't walk, and he was too small, & other children are playing, he could get hurt!! What's the purpose of paying if they are not supervising! If there was a age requirement, you should put it in your website, instead of wasting my time!!! This is the second Retro Fitness I've worked out in and I think it's a good spot. This is a very large facility and very busy. The crowd is comfortably mixed with various ages and fitness levels. When a facility is comfortable enough for the 'trying to get back in shape' person as well as the hardcore fitness fanatic, I believe that's a good sign. There are plenty of exercise machines and resistance equipment, a large free-weight section, 2 levels of treadmills/bikes/ellipticals. The locker room area is just ok, things such as sink fixtures, soap dispensers and hand dryers could use an upgrade IMO. This particular RF has exercise classes and child care services to suit your needs. Best part is when they turn on that giant ceiling fan! All in all, a recommendation from me. read more

I've had mixed experiences here. Too many muscle heads. Last few times I was there, it was unnecessarily hot and stuffy. Asst mgr said something to me about "regulations." Not sure about this. It's not usually like this, but two days in a row? I've never experienced this stuffiness in this location before, and I often go during peak times. I can't work out in that kind of physically and psychically toxic environment. From time to time, I'd get an email survey, and gave this location the benefit of the doubt and would give it a 10, although this is more than a bit of a stretch. The mgr, Michael M. imo isn't exactly the most approachable. I once emailed him an issue I was having with the gym, and he got combative with me in the email conversation. The mgr is supposed to smoothen things out with the clientele, not worsen them. Weird experience I had with him a few months ago- He pointed to my shorts, and said "What is THAT?!? Those have zIppers on them, which will rip the equipment!" He then proceeded to move his finger towards the back of the shorts that I was wearing, apparently to prove a point of some kind. I immediately moved back and told him to please not touch me.. "Relax!," he said. "I wasn't going to touch you!" I don't trust him, and I try to avoid him if possible. By the way, surprise-not a single zipper. Oh except maybe the fly? Handi-wipe stations look old and rusty to me. I'll go back, but only in a pinch and changing gyms for the time being. read more

Not all Retros are created equal and Retro Fitness in Fairfield NJ outshines the rest. It's one of the largest Retros I've attended, with four squat racks, two each for chest press, incline, and decline, and over eight benches for free weights. There are countless treadmills on the first and second floor. The only negative about the Retro of Fairfield is because it's so good it's extremely popular and could get crowded. However, as a regular I've come to know the other patrons and everyone is extremely friendly and will gladly allow you to jump in during a set. The staff greets you when you enter and makes sure to bid farewell. They are extremely accommodating and friendly. read more

Best gym I've been too. Tons of equipment and space. At other gyms, you have trouble getting a squat rack, bench press, stair master, or treadmill, but not here. Easily two times as much equipment as your average gym. Very friendly staff too, and there are sanitizing stations everywhere so the gym is kept very clean. read more

Walked in and forgot my key tag. Manager (Russ) makes a comment "oh come on". I had the barcode but I guess no one ever forgets their key tag at this gym. Place is nice Clean and big for a retro. I love this gym! The staff is so friendly and the facility is so clean! There's a lot of parking available, and the location is so convenient. I even got a friend to join so we can work out together! My favorite cardio machine is the recumbent bike and since they have 3 on the main floor, I never have a problem getting one. I've been a member since they first opened and have never regretted it! read more

I am having a very serious issue the Fairfield NJ Retro Fitness! They would not allow us to cancel my son's month to month (no-contract) 2nd year membership over the phone last September claiming we had to do it in person, even though I told them countless times that would be impossible because we moved 19 hours away to Florida. We were paid in full when I called to cancel. Now my autistic son is being harassed by collection agencies on his cell phone every single day claiming he owes $137.00. They continued to bill my credit card so I disputed it with DiscoverCard and the charge was reversed and a block was put on so they couldn't recharge it again. The next month it was charged again and DiscoverCard said that Retro Fitness tried to outsmart the block by changing one letter in their name to make the charge go through, so they changed my credit card account number to stop them from doing that. My son has autism and is on 2 different medications and in therapy and he can't deal with these credit collection agencies harassing him every single day by phone anymore! I just called and spoke to a woman first who just rudely abandoned me on hold for a half hour after I explained the story to her, and she said she would speak to her general manager, but refused to put him on the phone, so I called back after being forgotten on hold and spoke to Abe Lazizi and he refused to offer any help as well. DO NOT TRUST THEM!!!!!! read more

UPDATE: A bit overdue since I moved out of the area and moved to another Retro, but I'll state that after a year of going here, this was one of the nicest Retro Gyms and one of the best gyms around for the price. The management really kept the place clean and seemed to have a regular maintenance program so nothing seemed to stay broken long. If I'm in the area, I still enjoy stopping in for a quick workout. read more

Tried a free day pass here. Big place with a lot of machines. But some need maintenance. Missing rubber and funky motion on some equipment that probably needs oil. Dirty place. No spray bottles around to clean equipment and lack of paper towels. I saw a young kid dusting a treadmill base. Not sure the purpose of that when rest of place is filthy. Dirty men's room. No free towels. No free filtered water. Couldn't get to do dumbbells with all the juice heads taking up that space. I made it work ok for me but don't plan on returning. read more

The facility itself has everything most people will need to get a good workout. I would recommend some new machines like a stair master (the escalator type) and some more squat racks (only one in the gym and its always being used). Some etiquette issues occur often which are annoying (guys who don't put the 100lb plates back after using on the leg press, us females cant really remove those ourselves!) The gym is over crowded around 5-6 pm so i avoid those times. Sometimes it can be a bit too hot in the summer months in there. read more

Whenever I arrive/leave they always acknowledge me and say have a great work out. Wonderful customer service their always so nice and will help you with whatever you need! I've never had a problem at this gym. They have a wonderful movie room which is private to work out in and also enjoy a movie. I love how all the machines are spaced out just right so it doesn't feel like you're working out right on top of the person next too you it's very spacious also another one of my favorite features. Got a core membership initially at another Retro in the area but once I saw how spacious and clean this particular location was, I haven't gone to any others. Something I really appreciate is how certain machines are blocked off in order to properly social distance and that the amount of cleaning supplies on the floor is always in abundance. Ive been to a total of 4 Retros and I must say that Fairfield is my favorite! The staff are super friendly and they have themes for the protein shakes when a certain holiday is around. For instance, right now they have The Drunk and The Lucky Irish since St. Patrick's Day is around the corner. I love the creativity and pride that this Retro has. It is also very clean! I feel like it is more spacious, compared to the other Retros I've been too. This gym can get packed, especially after 3:30 when kids are out of school and people are out of work. But still, its never really an issue getting on a machine. The only thing I could complain about is the parking. It wouldn't be awesome if they cut out that huge grass area in the middle to make a bigger lot..but other than that everything is perfect! Overall, I love the prices, love the atmosphere, and I would definitely recommend this gym! read more

Returned to the gym first day they reopened from the COVID19 lock down and it was great to see Paula and the new morning crew. I was and am overwhelmed how the owner and staff have provided what I feel is a very safe/clean environment to work out. I was apprehensive about returning but they have really come through with addressing any concerns I had. A sincere thank you, I missed Retro big time, it is great getting back, working out and feeling safe. Great spacing of equipment, mask wearing and social distancing. This is probably my favorite Retro Fitness gyms I've trained at so far. The facility compared to the others I've been at is enormous: two huge sections on the first floor for machines and cables, and free weights; and a second floor for more cardio and abs There's not many moments where I needed to wait until a machine is open (but that's only because I only use free weights). My only complaint is actually from the members who leave the equipment on the ground or intact on the barbell/machines and drop dumbbells in front of them (namely the men). Yeah, there's a floor boy who does that responsibility, but be a gentleman and clean up afterwards. He's not there all the time. read more

The gym has a ton of different kinds of machines, a good amount of squat racks, two free weight sections, an area upstairs for abs/mat work, a ton of cardio machine (both upstairs and downstairs).. overall, a very well stocked gym. The locker/bathroom area is well maintained and spacious. There's a sauna in there too. The wellness center and daycare for kids is a nice and convenient touch. The only thing I would change is the shake bar!!! All the shakes taste bland or completely artificial. I enjoy getting shakes after my workouts but I honestly almost always will come home and fix it.. read more

This is probably the best gym around. I've signed up at numerous other gyms and couldn't find the right fit but retro has supplied me with everything I need. Some of the problems with other gyms is that they don't have to many free weights. Retro has tons and there dumbbells go all the way up to 150lbs. They also have a good customer service as there are a bunch of people you could ask if you had a question. Seems like they have classes to but I'm not interested. Overall I would recommend retro to anyone looking for a gym with everything for a low monthly rate. read more

beware of retro fitness when you move or at any time you need to cancel your membership you will not be able to cancel at the gym. you have to send a certified letter to abc financial in the state of arkansas and it takes 60 days for them to cancel your membership. in the interim, they continue to charge you. i just moved and this is what i was told. i had a friend who moved as well and he just infomred me that he too had sent the letter and called after 60 days and was informed that they never received it. any company that specifically designs a method to delay a customer from canceling a membership only to continue to to take money from a costomer is simply thievery. with so many people working hard for their money these days and tehn have a busniess take your hard earned money is inexcusible. shame on retro fitness.... shame shame shame on retro fitness read more

I use to come to this gym- but lately I go to the wayne location because the wayne location has nothing but nice staff, clean equipment, not much people etc. just called fairfield location and was very unhappy with their service. I called to see if they will be closing early due to weather conditions because I wasn't sure if I wanted to stop in a little later and "Sandy" starts being condescending and laughs, as if it was a stupid question. she goes are you kidding me? and rants on. How rude? sorry very unprofessional. just had to put that out there. learn to be a little nicer on the phone. read more

I like the retro fitness chain but the owner of the Fairfield Franchise needs help on communicating with members. As a gym rat for over 30 years i know the rules and respect others. I am also aware that some people don't. Whenever someone would do something dumb all members would be subject to multiple signs warning you not to repeat the infraction. The posting never said please and always seemed like threats, After a while they get old. The only reason i stayed as a member was because it was cheap and really close to my office. During this time i attended many other retro fitness locations but never ran into the issues i came across in Fairfield. I recently moved office and wanted to cancel my membership. First of all you have to go in person to do it and a manager has to be present. The first time i didn't know about the manager and the second time i told one was present when they weren't. This led 2 wasted trips. It is obvious that they do this as a stall tactic but it pissed me off and i felt others should be made aware. read more

The facilities and equipment are sufficient but the main reason for my writing the review pertains to their cancelation policy. If you have to cancel you will have a hell of time getting your money back (i'm still trying to stop them from charging my credit card after canceling 8 months ago. So much so that it is a boarderline scam!!! You have to send a certified letter... then they can only cancel at certain times.... though, they will continue to charge you and you will never receive a rebate for the months the over charge you. I have to say that this gym has a staff that is not trained and completely rude. While shopping for a new gymI got a free pass to try them out so I went to go see if I would consider this gym. The front desk dismissed me the minute I came to inquire about trying out the gym before purchase and gave her my pass. She then claimed that not all of their guns honor this pass and I have to pay to try it out. I was very upset at that but I paid it then tried out the gym. Basically in a snapshot you are in your own once you wLk in. Nobody tries to assist you. I didn't get anyone to give me a tour to explain the gym areas or where the machines were. When I went up to the front desk to see if I could get someone the woman at the desk rolled her eyes and said you can check to see if he's on the floor. I was really annoyed at that. The bathroom was dirty and needed soap and toilet paper. The sink had water stains and pooled water that obviously had not been cleaned the entire day. The treadmill I went I had no iPod service and the front desk said the WiFi was down. I couldn't find a sprayer to clean down my machine or paper towels and the machine even smelled funky too. I left the gym very disappointed and would never go back. Totally not my standard what what they are asking for monthly. Supposedly that was a new location so you think they would strive to make it an exceptional visit but not even close. They left me waiting at the front desk for 15 minutes just to check out. I had originally given retro 5 stars but after visiting retro fitness of Marlboro I have to reconsider my review. First let me just say that I love this place and the staff is awesome and I had thought they this was as good as a gym could get until I saw how far above and beyond this other retro went. In Fairfield lately everything seems to be slacking, the temperature always seems to be on the warm side, there is this odd smell through the entire gym every time i go there that makes want to puke, the rules are not enforced-I saw a guy in jeans working out the other day-, there is something wrong with the water fountain that makes the water warm and oddly tasting, the weights are never re-racked-most of the time they just lie on the floor wherever people decide to drop them, and the electronic scale has been out of order for quite some time now. Perhaps I just noticed all of these flaws because I visited a retro that has none of them but if another branch of retro can can so well maintained there is no reason why Fairfeild cant do the same. Still the fairfield location is way better than the Belleville one. Even with these issues I still love my gym, the equipment is always maintained and never out if order for more than a day or so, I've never had problems with my billing, and they have most every type of equipment one could ask for. AND, most of all, the staff is amazing. read more
