The drinks are good and the workers have all provided exceptional service. However, I asked on a recent visit if the tips left on the iPad go to the workers, and I was told they do not. Obviously this is unfair to the workers. Perhaps they are well paid to the point that they don't need to rely on tips. If that's the case, then tips simply should not be collected. No one leaves a tip thinking it's going anywhere other than to the staff who assist with your order. I've been tipping an extra 10-20% per order for months under the impression it was going to the workers -- only to learn that may not be the case. If that's true, then I feel misled about where those funds were going. A place that treats its customers this way does not deserve my business. If management is so interested in receiving tips, perhaps they should consider working the counter themselves. As it stands, I've been here many times and never seen a manager working. I'd like the money I've spent on tips back, but I'll settle for taking my business elsewhere. read more

Popped in here b/c Kung Fu tea didn't have any bubbles ready, so we ended up here. 30/50/full sugar, regular/less/no ice, and medium/large sizes. They were patient and although they forgot the Oreo topping initially, figured out the brown sugar w/ tapioca bubbles + Oreo topping for the kids. I don't normally get fancy drinks like this but decided why not? Seeing as how it was new and it's competitor up the street was jam packed. I got on recommendation the Lychee Slush series drink. Definitely good for a hot day as a treat. The drink was definitely sweet especially with the addition of the coconut jelly I got added to it. I like the ease of access menu you can see on the monitor near the counter. At the same time it's somewhat overwhelming with all the choices, but luckily the servers/makers are there to help with suggestions. Only thing that got me was I asked for only a little bit of topping, but got a lot. It was way too much coconut jelly. Getting the right balance I think will make the drinks better. read more

I was super excited that another bubble tea place opened up in Montclair. Before this place, Kung Fu Tea was the only option and for me it has always been a hit or miss. I couldn't decide what to get so I got two drinks lol. I tried the brown sugar milk tea and the fresh taro milk tea. I got both with light ice and 100% sugar. The man making my drink asked if I've had fresh taro before since many people haven't and are surprised by the texture/taste. I have before but I appreciate him asking. I really enjoy the taste of both drinks. They both taste fresh. I like how Gong Cha uses real taro instead of taro powder. However, FYI I confirmed that they do use taro powder for the taro slush. The quality of tea is so good, not like some of the other places where you can't even taste the tea or it is so watered down. I was ecstatic when I saw one had opened up in Montclair. This means I don't have to go all the way to GSP for a GongCha craving or settle for one of the subpar bubble tea places in the area. I was disappointed they don't honor the original rewards card and had started a new rewards program. I definitely recommend the original black milk tea, honey green tea, mango green tea, and taro milk tea. For toppings I love any of the jelly and the original tapioca. Unlike many other bubble tea places where the tea is chalky, and you can feel the texture of the tea powder mix, Gong Cha is smooth and creamy without any graininess. I always get mine with 70% sugar, and the sweetness level is pretty consistent from one day to the next. One thing I would advise is not to get less ice, as it ends up being too warm. At other places like Vivi, I can get less ice, and it will not affect the temperature of the final product as it is cold enough of a base to not melt the ice, but here for some reason, whenever I ask for less ice, it's pretty much all melted by the time that I get it from the person at the register. I'm not sure if it's because the Boba is kept very hot, or because the base tea is hot / warm, but it is a consideration to take into account if you prefer less ice. This is the first time I'm writing a review after so many times Gong Cha in Montclair have gotten our orders wrong. Every single time I/we call, it's the same response. The workers are very condescending and not apologetic at ALL. Tonight in particular I spoke to what probably was a little boy who wasn't trained in customer service, named "Justin" (let's hope he gave his real name). After I said that 3/4 of the items were wrong, he immediately said "OH, YEAH.." This guy knew the whole time the items I will be receiving were incorrect and they didn't do anything to resolve the situation immediately. I told him that he could've called and his response was, "we're VERY bussssy ma'am." WOW. He wasn't apologetic and I tell you, NOT one "I apologize" were uttered until I called him out on it. He said if I called ubereats they will give me a full refund. I asked him what I was supposed to do with all of the wrong drinks & if we're getting our actual orders & he said, "well, you can drink it ma'am." After I called him out on his sass, sarcasm, and rudeness, he said, "I apologize if that's how you take it but I wasn't being rude." UNBELIEVABLE. I called again for the 2nd time to get his name and asked if the manager was there. He said, "no but I can take a message." I said, "can you let him know how rude you were to me this evening?". I kid you not but he said "sure, I will let him know but I wasn't rude." BROOOO! In what world is this okay GONG CHA? This wasn't the first time. When gong cha first opened this kept happening and we just let it go because we thought the employees are new, they're getting acclimated and they're probably super busy. Gong cha is my favorite boba franchise so i was THRILLED to hear they opened a shop in Montclair! As a franchise, the quality of their boba has remained the same from shop to shop, and this location is no different. They have a crazy diverse menu of different teas and toppings, so a 10/10 for me on my boba ranking! As for the shop itself, its interior is super chic/ industrial vibe. If you walk towards the back of the shop, they have more seating with games to play and hang out with friends. I think seating wise, there is more room here than at its boba competitor in Montclair. For anyone thats never been to a gong cha, I definitely recommend you to check it out. For anyone thats been and loves it, check this one out too! Glad this opened up in the Montclair area and it's definitely giving the nearby KFT a run for their money. IMO Gong Cha is the superior milk tea chain, but everyone has their own opinions. Seems to have gotten pretty popular lately going into the store, but found out they actually do delivery (free on DoorDash, $12 min), which is super convenient if you're lazy. They have a list of their top sellers, which is also nice when you can't decide. They also usually have stamp cards if you're a frequenter, and get a free drink after a certain amount of drinks. It makes it more complicated, I've been coming for years to all the locations and I do not remember that being a thing. If you're looking for a place to have bubble tea in the heart of Montclair, I would totally recommend checking out Gong Cha! I was happy to see a franchise open up in this area. From its freshly brewed teas to the many toppings to choose from, you will always find a drink that's special for your taste! They will ask you what percentage of sugar you'd like as well as a low or high level of ice which is not an option given at many Bubble tea franchises. I tried the Mango Milk Bubble tea which is always my go to with regular sugar and low ice. I liked that it tasted more authentic with the pieces of mango mixed in with Boba at the bottom of the drink. Gong cha has a small interior but despite that, the decor is modern and beautiful. It will be my go-to place for Bubble tea in Montclair. I'm excited to check out more flavors and toppings! read more

Usually love Gong Cha's Dirty Brown Sugar Milk Tea. But I've tried this location twice now and the brown sugar/tea flavor is completely lost, unfortunately taste more milk forward than anything--compared to ones I've had at other locations. Maybe needs stronger tea concentrate or more boba mixture at the bottom? I attached a comparison photo of the SAME drink at the New Brunswick location and you can visibly see that it has more boba at the bottom (I didn't ask for extra), aka more flavor rather than just straight milk. read more

I love love love Gong Cha! This is my go to spot when in or near Montclair. You can tell a boba spot is good by the texture and flavor of their "bubbles" (tapioca) and Gong Cha's got it right. Plus they have so much variety in flavors and the ability to mix and match different inclusions. My go to order is the strawberry yogurt series (lite ice) or the slush version on hot days... during the winter I get still get an iced drink lol, the iced tea with bubbles and egg custard. So delicious! I love putting people onto Gong Cha because it really is a good spot when you want a break from the lines and hype from some other bubble tea spots.
