I've been meaning to get back into riding a bike after years of not doing so. I've always had hand-me-downs from my uncles or borrowed my dad's which was never really a right size for me. My boyfriend suggested Good Karma Bikes so we came from MV to take a look. The workers are attentive and make sure to ask all the right questions to determine what sort of bike you need. I was recommended a hybrid that ended up being just what I was looking for. My boyfriend was inspired and decided to get a road bike the next weekend, since he already had a mountain bike but wanted something better for commuting. We were there as he was trying bikes for a long time. Jay was patient and super knowledgeable. My boyfriend was unsure so we left, but we ended up coming back an hour later and sure enough, he found a great bike! We've been riding together ever since our new purchases. 1. They never answer the phone. I called 10 times Friday throughout the day to ask what time to come Saturday to fix a simple flat, they never answered. Try and call when you read this and you'll see what I'm saying. 2. Saturday I was there 10 minutes before they opened. The main technician says it's 10 minutes job to fix the flat. I say great, let's do it. He says: it'll be 4-5 hrs. I say why 4-5 hrs if it's a 10 minute job? He goes on a long rant that he is the only technician and was very rude. Then he tells me I should've called Friday. I explain I did, and he ends with, "You don't listen and disregard everything I said". That sentence made no sense given what transpired but he clearly has no customer service skills/training so I guess it's not his fault. After that sour-puss walked away, a co-worker of his apologized and suggested I try upshift down the street. Wow - what awesome service. Treat you great, help you immediately and truly are focused on the customer. Good Karma (good luck if you go there), zero stars! Do yourself a favor, go to upshift. read more

It's been 25 years since I rode my bianchi road bike which is just sad on my part. It's like starting to ride all over again which is embarrassing. Karma bikes got that beautiful road bike ready to ride but the only trouble is the driver/rider has gotten older and not comfortable like I once was. I got some real valuable pointers (basics) which I forgot . Karma bikes not only got my bike ready for the road again but spent the time with me so I felt comfortable leaving the shop. You rock! I had an excellent experience with Good Karma Bikes. My kids grew out of their 24" Trek Precalibers so after they upgraded I wanted to find a good place to donate the older rides - because they weren't doing any good for anyone sitting unused and taking up space in our garage. I found Good Karma Bikes online, reviewed their donation specs on the website to confirm they would take what we had, called (and listened to the recorded message reiterating what I already knew and pointing me back to the website) and I headed over. Good Karma Bikes couldn't be closer Diridon Station - they are directly across Montgomery Street from its picturesque front facade and lawn. Their showroom was full of high quality bicycles and others being lovingly restored. I brought our bikes inside and straightaway a very kind staff member told me they were both "lovely" and "they'll make 2 kids very happy." This filled my heart with joy and confirmed for me I was in the right place. She took some info, handed me my tax receipt and I was back on my way. Easy peasy. Doing what they claim. The flyer they handed me says a resource for people in need, but they determine who are in need. The flyer does not say you have to be getting government assistance but that is what is. Without that information on their flyers it is really false advertising and false hope, especially when they told me, to my face, to show up early on Saturday for the help I needed. I was looking for a place to donate my bike and wasn't sure if it was even all that salvageable so I choose GKB because if they couldn't refurbish my bike they would recycle it for me! I was happy to find out they could refurbish it and they did so. They sell these bikes to people in need at a reasonable-or-better price. I love their mission. They were so helpful and it was easy to just walk in, show them the bike I wanted to donate, and walk out with a receipt. They clearly care about the community. They had lots of people in there for tune-ups and advice and offered all they could with no judgement. read more

Love this local bike shop. I always come here when my bike needs repair or needs a part replaced. The staff are super helpful and knowledgeable to help you get exactly what you need done. I had two front tires stolen in the past couple of years for my hybrid and road bikes. Came to Good Karma for replacements after checking Mike's Bikes and Hyland Bikes in Willow Glen who didn't have anything available. Mind you, this was at the height of the pandemic and the bike shortage. Good Karma quickly put together a front tire that roughly matched my bike. New tube, used rim and new tire came out to about $30. I've also donated one of my old bikes here after finally buying a new one. Very simple process and I knew they would be able to restore my bike to good working condition. I hope someone is enjoying my old hybrid as much as I did. Came in recently to help a friend buy a used bike. He was able to find a Univega mountain bike for about $200. The frame had a few rust spots but looked like the chain and seat were replaced. Shifted smoothly and rode well. You are able to give bikes a test ride down the hallway. Good Karma is a great local non-profit. Highly recommend supporting. read more

I stumbled onto Good Karma bikes a few months ago when the pandemic started and I found myself looking for a new hobby. I looked for bikes everywhere in San Jose and felt defeated when they were all sold out or out of my height category. I even traveled out of the city to Gilroy and Salinas, no bikes there either. I'm so happy I found Good Karma! They are non-profit used bike shop that helps those in need of transportation. They run with the help of volunteers and I am not lying when I say that all of the volunteers I've met have been very kind and knowledgeable about bikes. When you buy a bike at Good Karma you will get a complimentary 60 day tune-up where they take a look at your bike and address any issues. You can also refer to this shop for any bike parts or services you may need. Lastly, I was able to take home an awesome bike that I completely fell in love with for just a fraction of the original price. My boyfriend has since gone to Good Karma and gotten a bike of his own from here. read more

I bought a bicycle from this store in November. After coming back from the Christmas holiday in December, I discovered that the front tire was completely flat. I took the tire to the store, mentioned that it might be leaking, and asked about the warranty. The staff member was very impatient and said I should have been inflating it once a week, that the warranty had expired, and that the warranty didn't cover tires. They pumped it up for me, but on my way to work--within an hour--the tire was fully deflated again, making it impossible to ride. I had to push it to a nearby bike shop to have it repaired. This bike as a secondhand bike wasn't cheap, and their service was terrible, avoid this place. read more

Was in the market for a new bike... but discovered Good Karma Bikes and purchased a used very good condition Trek hybrid bike that didn't break the wallet or my heart. Definitely market value with a 90 day warranty. Honestly, probably my greatest find during COVID-19. Very unique selection of bikes that contains options from well known brands that have been donated / found used (or in very few cases, purchased new from the profits) and fixed up at Good Karma. And the workers here are extremely nice and patient with all my noob questions. Their profits go to support foster youth in the community - I believe specifically supporting them to go to college. And take note that your purchase here can actually be considered a donation for tax refunds ;) I've recommended Good Karma to several friends now - because of my good experience and how they give back to the community. San Jose is lucky to have this bike shop! Expert, kind, and straightforward service. I brought my old bike here, and they fixed her up nicely. She rides like a brand new bike again and looks great! It truly is an awesome business model building community and funding much needed programs for social impact specifically for at risk and foster youth. Plus the bikes are below market value with warranty. It has been many years since I owned a bike and AJ was so patient answering all my questions and letting me test run them through town. Vera and Connor in service are super knowledgeable and fixed it up with new tubes, pedals and bar tape so it's ready to ride. Dedicated and friendly team led by Francois! I live in the east bay and still drive down to get service done from this amazing team. It is such a pleasure visiting with them. The dedicated volunteers who runs this place provides plenty of education to the general public especially if you are looking to buy a bike. I was told there is another location for the "higher end" bikes in a different shop. In addition to providing free bikes for the low income and for the homeless, they also provide work experience for them so that they will have an opportunity to develop skills necessary to compete in today's real world. They also provide a six week certificate program in "Bicycle Mechanics" for everyone. You can go to their website and sign up for their "Yahoo Group" which will provide you details on how to sign up! If you have a bike sitting at home and you are looking to help out, donate your bike here. Are you looking to make a purchase? Consider coming here first and checkout their huge inventory. Each bike has a story, and each bike is not perfect, some will need to be tuned before they leave here; some will have cosmetic flaws. Prices starts anywhere from $75 on up and they are sold "tuned up" to ensure safety. They have an assortment of accessories here too at reasonable prices. I was looking for a comfy seat, instead, they gave it to me for free because it had that "imperfection.' How cool is that? If you need space and tools to work on your bike, you can rent out their workstation for only $10 an hour plus materials, or you can hire one of the volunteers to fix it for you for a nominal fee. Just got a wonderful new bike at Good Karma Bikes! The staff was so helpful in helping find a bike for my height and biking habits. Ended up getting a bunch of extras including spare tires, a kickstand, rear rack, and used panniers which they all installed for me at no additional charge. I originally wanted to get a used bike, but I liked the ride of a new one they had so much that I got that instead. For their new bikes, they buy them wholesale and sell them at retail with a generous price match policy. I felt better buying a new bike this way and having a non-profit benefit from my purchase. On top of that, they offer a variety of community programs including free repair clinics and workshops for women (hosted by women). Staff is always super friendly when I pop in--usually when I'm visiting Chromatic or Hapa's. I end up ogling the vintage road bikes for awhile and then head on my way. But I'll be back. What a great spot to find a deal on a used bike! There are many things to love about this place, not the least of which is the occasional used eBike that shows up seriously marked down. Nice! It's a cute interior, practical and clean. They probably have... between one hundred and two hundred bikes in there, if I had to hazard a guess. Service is very friendly here, and I appreciate the no-frills approach both in terms of customer interaction as well as service and general aesthetic. It's a bit tucked away in the middle of a strange area though, so there's really almost no way you would randomly walk by this place and discover it. You have to purposefully seek it out in order to find it... but it's absolutely worth it, if you're in the market for a used bicycle! read more

This place is fantastic. I came in for repairs (needed to true-up/fix my wheel) and was greeted by Francois. He was friendly, helpful, and professional. I had a few questions about tubes and tires, and he was happy to answer all my questions. I ended up getting a used wheel/rim, a used tire, and a new tube. And I walked out of there more knowledgeable and genuinely impressed by the entire operation, and happy to give my money to what seems like a decent place staffed by honest people. Great bike shop, give 'em a try! On a sidenote, in addition to new, I think it's awesome that they sell used parts that are fully functional for a discounted price - really aligns with those of us who are trying reduce, reuse, and recycle. :-) read more

One brother of mine lives in Willow Glen and was looking for a good used bike for a low price for another brother of ours who visits from time to time. He needs a bike to get around when he's here. We called a few bike shops but they told us they only sold new bikes but mentioned that Good Karma Bikes sold used bikes. I thought that's an interesting name. I should have realized, by the name, that they are a non-profit business. We found that out once we got there. The guy that helped us, which I regretfully have forgotten his name, couldn't have been nicer. He had his dog on a leash which was attached to his belt. They were inseparable. He told us that every month, Good Karma Bikes gets a few bikes that they give away for free. At the time we walked in they had three they were giving away. My brother got one of them. It is a fabulous bike. We couldn't believe the good fortune. We did purchase a back light for the bike though. That was the least we could do. Since then, I've looked up info on this shop. They get donations from various places, one being Palo Alto Networks. They are helping homeless people by supplying bikes as well as teaching them the skill of repairing them. They treat them with respect which in turn gives hope to many of these people. They couldn't have picked a more befitting name for this shop. This place rocks! I was in the market for a used bike. Went to another store in Willow Glen region (won't mention names) and was disappointed with the used bike selection (frankly there was only like 5). The sales rep was nice but you could tell they were trying to send me higher end/new bikes. Traveled to Good Karma. Great vibes. Easy parking. At the front they have all of the used bikes for sale with accessories. In the back is the service area. They was an gentleman named Robert (Roberto) who helped me. Took a long time showing me road bikes, giving me tips as a first time owner and rider. Prices are great. Accessories are 20% when you purchase a bike and 80% return on your money within first 30 days, and up to 90 days you can bring the bike back for whatever (even if nothing is wrong with it just for a tune-up). Robert really did a great job and was very knowledgeable. I was very happy with the service, the cause, the shop and the overall vibes. Will come back again. 5 Stars. read more

We couldn't be happier with our new (used) rides from Good Karma Bikes. It's a bit nerve-wracking shopping for bikes in the Bay Area, where it seems like every bike shop only caters to extreme enthusiasts who are willing to shell out thousands of dollars for a single bike. After browsing a few stores online and suffering serious sticker shock, I found Good Karma Bikes via Yelp and we excitedly dropped by the next weekend. I felt hopeful due to the rave reviews, but my expectations were still exceeded when we were literally in and out of the shop within *20 minutes,* new bikes in hand. Part of this efficiency was due to the limited selection, but more importantly the store vibe is super chill and the staff friendly and helpful. There are probably 10-20 bikes that are ready to go at any given time, and if you find one you like you can simply roll it out and take it for a mini ride in the large hallways outside. We nabbed two beautiful hybrid bikes for under $200 each. I'm no bike expert but as we rolled out with our new quarantine hobbies a staff person nodded and commented that we got good ones. I felt like a proud new parent! To top it all off, Good Karma Bikes is a non-profit, volunteer run organization you can feel great supporting. I'm looking forward to returning in the next month to take advantage of the free tune-up service and ongoing care they uniquely offer. read more

I know they are doing a great job by giving back. But come on, $200+ for a beat up bike. When walking out an employee ask me if I had any questions? Yes I do. How can you ask so much for a beat up bike? Every bike I see is over $200 and some have chunks missing from their seats? We can sell you a bike for dirt cheap, but as soon as it goes out that door, it's yours, no warranty. The price you see includes repairs, which may take 2 weeks. For my first visit. There's no clear understanding of this. Me being me, I see price tag of $265 on an old Rockhopper and wonder why? Few bikes down, a bike so beat up I couldn't even tell who made it, $225. On tag "has a few Ritchey parts". I understand the whole reuse movement. But for a few bucks more, I would rather get a new bike. Maybe you (the shop) might want to show price of the bike in its state. "As is" price and "Repaired" price. read more
