    Octopus

Cute spot on Main Street! Reservations were easy to make online. I was feeling snacky so I came before my reservation time and they were so accommodating and seated me right away. I love the Midcentury Asian vibe inside with dim moody lighting. Great spot to gather with friends or on a date. For drinks, I got a non alc Hoi An Nights. It had a very interesting flavor profile. Unique but just a tad sweeter than I would have liked. For food, I got the Sun Seeker Oysters, Wagyu Beef Tartare, and the Fremantle octopus. The oysters themselves were fantastic. Fresh and juicy. I do not think the foam paired well with it at all. The foam was sweet and it reminded me of having cupcake frosting on top of something savory. I ended up scraping the foam off my oysters. The wagyu beef tartare came out a beautiful bright red/ pink color and I liked that it wasn't as eggy as traditional tartare. The house made crackers paired well with it in terms of taste and portioning. The octopus was one of my favorites. Simple but prepared well. Portions met my expectations in terms of quality. Service was accommodating and efficient. Overall, a cute restaurant that serves high quality and fresh ingredients with a Vietnamese twist.

We went and tried their dine out menu. It is $70/person and every thing is served family style. The food tasted good especially the crab noodle. However, we thought it was too expensive for the portion served. Both my partner and I were still hungry after the meal. We were quite shocked when they asked us to choose 1 of the 2 desserts and had to share it. We expressed our disappointment to the server, and he was very understanding and thanked us for our honest feedback. He offered us another dish of our choice from the menu on the house. We were very pleased with his service. The restaurant is nice and chic. The bar table is nice and marble like. I would recommend others to enjoy a drink and light snack there, but don't expect a filling meal.

We tried to stop by a day earlier for happy hour but they closed early due to a private party. Well the party was a celebration for their 2025 Michelin bib! I knew I needed to check this place out the next day since it was so close to our Airbnb. The pho dac biet drink was so good! It tasted exactly like pho but in alcoholic form! It's a must get and so unique. I highly recommend stopping by to try their items. Service was on point and I enjoyed every moment of my time here.

There are selective items I love and come back time and time again from good thief 1. Cocktails -- there is such a unique experience here with the cocktails. Flavours are fun and have depth 2. Oysters -- 10/10 BC sunseekers with umami flavours and a bit of a kick 3. Garlic noodles -- 10/10 garlicky, crunchy, umami and al dente noodles Service is always top notch with the perfect amount of attention to detail Note: things I've tried but aren't my favourite -seasonal appetizer: chicken liver with strawberries and puff pastry - frog legs are too sweet but really nice fried - halibut curry Ambiance in the summer is great because the windows open up and you can always see the bustling streets of main. Love also watching the bartenders do their thing

Great meal, great drinks, great service. Good thief definitely surpassed my expectations. We did the tasting menu ($85) and had a couple cocktails. Everything was really good to great. Highlights include the oysters which had a lovely Thai coconut foam, and the pho dac biet cocktail which blew us all away by capturing the essence of pho but also still being a bourbon based cocktail that you'd want to sip on. Service was excellent. Ambiance was cool and we spent some time over dinner talking about how much we liked the interior design. Looking forward to returning!

This place sounded interesting and as a fan of Ahn and Chi I was excited to go with some friends. The place is small. As a party of 6 you can only really sit by the entrance or the table over. Immediately we found the reservation system not so seamless. With their tasting menu, you had 2 time slots to choose from but the 5:30 time only gave you 2 hours. We choose the 7:30 time slot which cost more but gave you 2.5 hours. We are still unsure if it was the exact same menu as the earlier time slot but I don't see how it can be different. After our experience it would not have been possible to finish all the dishes within the 2 hours. The food was very good. Flavors were bold and presentation was very nice. The only thing was that nothing really stood out for me as amazing; there was no dish I would return for. The amount of food was on the larger side in my opinion. My group did find it strange that they gave us some pickled items (carrot, lotus root, radish) and taro chips to start but it was so tiny and few you could only try one maybe two things. I would however go back but I wouldn't go out of my way to return. The cocktails looked interesting and the drink I got was good. It was rather overpriced for its size and being a mocktail at $16.

Date night with the girls at Good Thief, and the vibes were immaculate! This cozy little place, located on trendy Main Street, is great for drinks and little shared bites, and I'm glad I tried this place after hearing so many good things about it. Starting with drinks, I opted for the Hoi An Nights, which features a gin base with floral and tart hints of mangosteen, lychee, and jasmine. I think the flavours interact very well and were pleasing to the palate, especially for those who enjoy tart cocktails without the lemon/lime flavour. We decided to share a variety of dishes, starting with the corn appetizer feature. The corn was seasoned with a delicious sauce that I forgot the profile of, but it was sweet, salty, and sour all at the same time and reminded me of fish sauce but better. Texture-wise, the girls and I found it just okay, as it was a bit chewy (likely because it was seasoned with something wet). Next, we sampled a few skewers (beef and chicken hearts(?) as I recall). The skewers were well-seasoned and standard for what it was. We also ordered the pomelo salad as a palate cleanser, and although it did its job cleansing, I felt it was not a strong or memorable dish otherwise. The frog legs were the star of the show! I was pleasantly surprised by how juicy and tender they were - almost a cross between chicken and fish. My friend also loved the pomme frites, especially the thickness of the crispy potato, combined with the Thai green chilli aioli. Last but not least, the bone marrow paired with milk buns was an interesting take. I think each tasted well on its own, but I would probably prefer the marrow paired with a different type of bread. I think overall, the portion sizes were good considering the bar bites nature of the restaurant. The server was also really kind and helpful in giving us suggestions on menu items. I don't think the food was strongest, but all things considered, it is a great contender for good vibes with friends or date night.

Truthfully, I was in doubt to try Good Thief as they are still quite the 'new kid' in town for post dinner drinks, especially since I was coming here for a special-ish occasion. Luckily, we had backup plans in any case walk-in was a no go. I was even less hopeful about the place with their $10 per head donation reservation system - which feels a bit forced, and felt a bit like contributing to the corporation's year end tax deduction (but unfortunately, not mine), bright side: funds are being donated. Initially we attempted to do a walk-in reservation for the evening to be informed they don't do that, and we will have to return at the time of and the wait is typically 45mins as they are likely going to be full house (slightly baffled but yes, we were told that). Final attempt for seats, post dinner prime time for drinks - walk-in to our surprise, half the seats empty and we were "lucky" to grab a table! From the menu, I liked that the lineup of drinks ranks from fruity sweet to dry, with tasting notes paying homage to Vietnam's rich food culture. To my surprise, all four drinks that our party ordered was delicious - each encompassing the perfect balance of fruity sweetness, dryness from the alcohol and accents of flavour that complemented each and every ingredient so well. I would consider this a very rare occasion that all drinks ordered hit the spot. I also loved the small plate of pickled veggies that punched very hard to cleans our palettes along the way. I could not possibly name a favorite, and have been longing to return for the rest of the menu!

You walk into this adorable place and you want to be there! Got to pop in for cocktails and the bartender was amazing. You can tell he is passionate about his job and his absolute love for the Good Thief. We got a daiquiri and Negroni. The details including the stamped ice wow. Cannot wait to come back for a meal. Love, love, loved!

We came in for drinks around 9pm and there were some available tables. The hostess and server were nice. We ordered a couple drinks and got some taro chips and pickles on the house. The drinks were all really good and had distinct flavours. We got the the Heist, Hoi An nights, a Juicy tale and the lap di lap lai. We enjoyed all of them and would definitely come back for food

Came here recently for cocktails. Server was very pleasant and knowledgeable. Recommended something of my taste. A bit on the pricy side but the ambience was nice. Not too noisy nor too dark. They also have late night happy hours which will try in the future.

Walked in at 5:30 and they were able to give us a table providing we were out in an hour so we took it! They were pretty fast with service too. The food was really tasty with lots of flavours. I do wish that they offered some of their Ahn and Chi menu here. I found the menu to be lacking a bit. I also wish that they advised the dietary restrictions on their menu. The vibe was amazing with upbeat music and it wasn't too loud either.

best dish we had. octopus, so tender and the sauce and textures were perfect

Pricey but delicious and great vibe. When they say walk-ins are welcome they mean it and if you go after 8pm on a weeknight you wouldn't need a reservation. Getting the tasting menu is the best way to try everything but they have an a la carte menu and a late night menu if you like to pick your own or just get a snack. Our bill for two can to 125 before tip which was generous and well deserved. Some of the best service we've had in 3 years in Vancouver. The server was able to recommend both drink and food choices. Some of the dishes we got were the frog legs, foie gras parfait, octopus, the daily bintaro and pomme frites. The stand out for us was the octopus which was cooked perfectly and so tender and was a fully composed dish. The frog legs were bigger and juicier than the ones I'm used to in France and tasted more like chicken. It was good portion size so get those if you like chicken legs. The foie gras parfait was a slab of foie gras pate and some marinated chantrelle served with bread. It was delicious but not as rich as foie gras pate I've had before. The daily binchotan was tiny like it is traditionally, 2-3 bits of organ meats and delicious, twice in price what it would be Asia for cost. The pomme frites we were divided on, the French spouse said they were like American tater tots and liked them. I found them a bit too starchy and needed more of the oxtail gravy and there was far too little cheese curds, the portion is good and I can see this being a great meal if you are just doing a late night snack. They do have a late night menu and while it's not served till 2am which is what I desperately want in Vancouver it's later than most restaurants so I will be coming back for that as well as to try the rest of the menu. In atmosphere this place reminds me of Expatriate in Portland, a fave for late night dining with an Asian fusion menu and an atmosphere based on 30's Singapore Raffles. Good Thief's decor is more 60s Saigon but it's got that moody but relax vibe. It's just got such a good feeling about it and makes you want to order one more drink. There are booths which are super cozy. In the the summer there is a large outdoor space on the sidewalk but I prefer the feeling when it's dark and stormy. The cocktail menu is a big part of the place and as a non-drinker and the French spouse being a picky boozer we found the selection to be fabulous but expensive especially for the non-alcoholic drinks. Of course no one forced us to have 16 dollar non-alcoholic cocktails and we will have them again and try all of them...for research of course. All in all, this is the type of the place if you want a cozy but fancy vibe, comfortable that you will want to go regularly but your bankbook might not be as comfortable with that. It's listed as Michillen bib gourmant which is 2 courses and a wine for under 60 and if you are doing the late menu you can do that but if you are coming for a full meal I would expect 80 per person with tax and tip.

We ordered the Dark Spell Latte, Albedo Spritz, and Final Word. The Dark Spell Latte is like an espresso martini with chocolate syrup added, which is pretty solid. The Albedo Spritz is a red wine cocktail with hard liquor, and stood out to me as they had 5oz of alcohol so this was fairly strong, but I would imagine most of the ounces came from the wine itself. I liked the gold dusted blackberry. The Final Word is fruity and smoky, which I enjoyed, but not warrant a hefty price tag compared to the other drinks. Service is decent and in line with other restaurant bars. Overall, solid drinks at okay prices that I can see myself recommending this spot. Strange because our view was blocked by a kind of ersatz plastic and wood wagon wheel blocking our view of the servers and bar. It was reminiscent of Utah's Zion Curtain. Later, I was told it was part of Odd Society's Covid protection and helped the bartenders stack things up. Okay, fine, but tear the damn things down. They're obnoxious. Odd Society creates an array of liquors made from ingredients sourced locally by law. It's required by their license. I tried almost all of them, and most were fantastic. Abby and Colin, our servers, were charming, fun, and educational, answering my questions, which became increasingly inane as the alcohol took effect. The distillery also mixes fantastic cocktails, and mine, named Midori, was friggen unbelievable. I had two of them along with my liquor tasting. In summary, the place was ok, but noticed after the fact that we were overcharged for the drinks. It's a small space - about 3 high tables, one lower one, each seating 4 to maybe at most 5 people, plus a bar. I reserved a table for the 2 of us at 3:30 pm on a Sunday (earliest reservation they had as they open at 3 pm) and we were seated at 3 pm. They checked our vaccine passports and then seated us. Not long after we were seated, the remaining tables were all taken just after opening for 30 minutes so I would recommend reserving if you prefer tables over bar seating. The waitress brought over a drinks menu and food menu. The menu showed cocktails at $13. We chose our drinks and ordered, then the waitress came by with a second menu that she said was for Sunday only. She apologized and said she normally doesn't work Sunday's so she didn't know this promotional menu was available. This menu had some cocktails on promotion that I would have not minded to try, but I had already received my cocktail. Oh well. I had the Violet and Claire, which looked great and tasted pretty good for the first half. However by the second half of the drink, it started to taste too sweet. It was not bad for a cocktail, overall. My friend said the Smoke Between the Sheets cocktail was alright as well. We got our bills quickly as we had a second place to visit afterwards. After paying, I snapped a picture of the bill at the time but did not notice until I got home that to my surprise, each cocktail was listed on the bill at $14.95. I recalled their physical menu saying $13, and verified this with their menu online. Unfortunately, I did not notice the discrepancy until I was home, otherwise I would have mentioned something. Note that our visit was at the end of November 2021, and at the time I'm writing this review (December 26, 2021), their online menu still has cocktail prices at $13. So, I am not sure if this was a one time mistake when we paid, or if they have just forgotten to update their menu? Either way, this was disappointing. Because of the entire experience I probably won't visit again, especially with all the other options Vancouver has for cocktails.

We've had their loukoumades twice, once as takeout and once at the restaurant. It was pretty good as takeout but so good eating it immediately at the restaurant. Also tried their lamb shoulder. I'm chasing the high of this one leg of lamb we had in Athens, and this one wasn't bad at all (my husband loved it)! But I usually am not one for lamb. Still was good though! And the lemony potatoes were lovely. Can't wait to come back next time!

I ate at two other tasting menu spots while I was here and this place was a clear winner. It's a one Michelin star restaurant and absolutely lives up to the hype. We did the tasting menu and every single course was delicious. There were a lot of flavor combinations I'd never had before, and the presentation was on point. They took the time to explain each dish, which I really appreciated. The chef clearly focuses on seasonality and local ingredients, so the menu changes by season. This tasting menu was themed around "Preservation," which made the experience even more interesting. The ambiance was top notch. The space felt warm, intimate, and thoughtfully designed, which really elevated the whole experience without feeling stuffy or overdone. The pacing was perfect, about two hours total, and I left very full and very happy. Can't wait to come back.

Service was exceptional. Both the maître d' and our server were friendly and helpful. We opted to order from the regular and seasonal à la carte menus for dinner: - Brezeln - The pretzel buns were soft and warm and we could not resist putting a big glob of the honey cultured butter on every bite. - Octopus - The tentacles were tender and springy at the same time. The slight heat from the sauce was perfect in cutting through the richness of the meat. - Chicken fried maitake - The coating was very flavourful but we found the the seasoning a bit too heavy. - Scallops - They were fresh and sinfully delicious with the sauce. - Sunchoke Dumplings - A dish with simple ingredients but it was easily the most flavour rich and balanced dish of the evening. - Hunters Chicken - I like that both dark and white meats were served on the dish. Although I generally stay away from white poultry meat but all the pieces were tender and juicy. The seasoning was a bit on the saltier side for us though. - Hay - The custard dish was interesting and we were told it's been the most popular dessert offering since the restaurant doors opened. It reminds me of a deconstructed tres leches cake from a restaurant on the North Shore years agar when I was hoping for a good piece of cake.

We ordered earlier in the day, and the shucker was clearly alert, taking the extra steps to ensure a clean finish. Truffle fries were indulgent and perfectly crisp, though the garlic aioli was milder than I prefer -- almost like straight mayo without a punch. I skipped the sushi wrap, sticking to my traditionalist ways, but my friend enjoyed it. Brownie bites, complimentary as they were, were a disappointment. Lacking enough fat and possibly stored improperly, they tasted a bit stale -- a shame, because how does a brownie not taste good? Our server was attentive and charming, swooping in at just the right moments for round twos and top-offs, which made the experience that much smoother.

Sadly after visiting the rooftop twice for happy hour and once for dinner with an announced significant birthday number shared, and two breakfast's a three is all we can muster. It should be so much more, but the food lets down the entire experience. Our service was good, with delightful people helping our experience. That said service is slow, with details that should be spot on, not even evident. Water glasses left empty forever, promises made, not even brought up again. When the reservation was made a question was asked of an event for the dinner out. A 60th birthday was mentioned, acknowledged, and when sat by our server and nothing further. To be fair K would rather it all go by unannounced, but when it's all over the paperwork a small recognition should be there. The space itself, is not on a rooftop at all, but it's a beautiful high ceilings restaurant that deserves a far better kitchen. Our price fixe menu for two at $155 or so was definitely not worth the price at all. The steak was uniformly medium when med rare was the ask. There was a tiny bit of medium rare at one end, but the vast majority was medium or more. The torch of the butter on the steak, looked good from afar prior to our serving, but right in front of you looks almost comical. Our breakfasts were average at best, again service was ok, but the food was not where it should be, in fact not even close. We'd ponder staying at the hotel again due to location, but we'd not eat here.

You can see how it's inspired by Bun Bo Hue, but it's a different dish. The Pho broth here tends to be on the light side, but it's not consistent. I'm guessing they have a huge pot of Pho and what you get varies depending on how full it is? I wouldn't say that it's bad but, at this price point, I'd like a little more consistency. That goes for other things as well. Out of the four times we ordered a Pho from here, the sprouts were sad and wilted one of the four times. You expect that kind of variance at a place that's half this price point, but not at this price point. If you care about decor or presentation, this is probably the Vietnamese place with the best decor and the best presented food (when it's not wilted). It probably works for business dinners or as a date spot?

The restaurant is really well organized and the staff is incredibly friendly. We were seated right away which is always nice. The waiter went over the menu and was very knowledgeable about every item on the menu. We ultimately decided to go with items from the house specials because why not? We got the Bun Bo Hue and Bo Ne. Both entree came out freshly prepared and very served in pretty good sized portions. The broth for the bun Bo hue was under seasoned for my preference so I adjusted with fish sauce and a little bit of lime. When paired with veggies, the soup definitely fills you up. The Bo Ne was sizzling as it came on a hot plate. Every bite was delicious when balanced with a little bit of everything that came on the plate. The price was a little steep for what we got but the experience with the staff, restaurant, and food was a good one.
