    Brezeln
    Joe L.

We have put off visiting the restaurant for almost 3 years since moving back to Vancouver after an absence of 10 years so we decided it would be time to pay a visit for our anniversary a week before Christmas. Service was exceptional. Both the maître d' and our server were friendly and helpful. We opted to order from the regular and seasonal à la carte menus for dinner: - Brezeln - The pretzel buns were soft and warm and we could not resist putting a big glob of the honey cultured butter on every bite. - Octopus - The tentacles were tender and springy at the same time. The slight heat from the sauce was perfect in cutting through the richness of the meat. - Chicken fried maitake - The coating was very flavourful but we found the the seasoning a bit too heavy. - Scallops - They were fresh and sinfully delicious with the sauce. - Sunchoke Dumplings - A dish with simple ingredients but it was easily the most flavour rich and balanced dish of the evening. - Hunters Chicken - I like that both dark and white meats were served on the dish. Although I generally stay away from white poultry meat but all the pieces were tender and juicy. The seasoning was a bit on the saltier side for us though. - Hay - The custard dish was interesting and we were told it's been the most popular dessert offering since the restaurant doors opened. It reminds me of a deconstructed tres leches cake from a restaurant on the North Shore years agar when I was hoping for a good piece of cake.

Fantastic. I was impressed. I experienced chef's creations in Toronto when he collaborated with Aburi Hana and while that was decidedly "ok" this was much better and shows that it's important to try the chef's home kitchen before deciding on their talents. I had the tasting menu so no point in highlighting dishes as they won't be the same. What I would share is that several plates shows a nice complexity of flavour where the taste changes as you chew/eat it. That's the signature of a great chef.

Strawberry sorbet dessert for our bdays with a crumbled strawberry meringue! Perfection when I was nearly full

We went here on a recommendation and celebrated our birthdays. It was a beautiful spot to enjoy for a special occasion and we were so full by the end of the delicious meal! We hardly had room for dessert. Everything was so rich and incredible. I loved my cocktail, I forget the name but it was a seasonal selection. Beautiful ambiance and excellent service.

Another Michelin-starred restaurant in Vancouver that truly deserves all its accolades. Their cocktails were amazing- borderline dangerous because they were so smooth and you couldn't really taste the alcohol. I highly recommend Figgy Sins (if it is still on the menu). The wine pairing was good too for the most part. There were one or two pairings that were off but the staff was kind enough to replace the pairings with different options. The whole experience lasted over 2.5 hrs. For a tasting menu, we got a LOT of food and my friend and I were so full towards the end- we struggled to get through the main course and the desserts. The dishes were very creative, packed a lot of flavors and were delectable. Service was amazing as well. Our sommelier was very knowledgeable. Overall, it was a greay experience. I highly recommend Published on Main.

    Peach seasonal dessert.

This place fires on all cylinders and is very deserving of its Michelin star. We couldn't decide what to eat so we split 5 dishes. Three dishes per person is recommended, but we left plenty satisfied after those 5 dishes and 2 desserts, a peach seasonal and the chocolate mousse with peanut butter and banana ice cream. We didn't intend to order 2 desserts but the first was so good, we had to try a second. For the 5 dishes, we split the: - Pea tortelli - Gnocchi - Salmon - Duck breast - Beef Everything we ate was world class, elegant and carefully crafted. The ambiance is inviting and classy, but casual at the same time. The service is spot on and was very helpful with recommendations. I would say this is a must-do dining experience in Vancouver. Make sure you book in advance.

Foraged mushroom and onion cold soup

I got a reservation for the Flourish tasting which has 10 courses. Lasted almost 4 hours. 1) Foraged mushroom and onion and elderflower gel with forest flower around the rim cold soup. Flavorful. Have to sip where the forest flowers are for max flavor. 2) Snacks round 1: radish in nuoc cham with cilantro and basil with crispy garlic chips underneath. kohlrabi cured with xo sauce and citrus segments withe apple mint leaf, triangle is roasted golden beet, horseradish sabayon topped with saffron gel and bee pollen garnish and smoked and candied steelhead with pickled spruce tips underneath is nori creama and kelp crostad Best to mix the nuoc cham on the bottom because otherwise you may just get a full on taste of just undiluted fish sauce on the radish. Rest of the snacks were very light. 3) Side stripe shrimp, nasturium, tobiko, Koji oil and nori cold chawanmushi. Light and I got twice the shrimp because my friend didn't want her shrimp. 4) Snacks round 2: Aebleskiver with dungeness crabs and herbs inside with tarragon emulsion on top and bottom with poached crab on top, right is tomato basil tart with brisee shell with basil cream and sliced tomato on top with olive oil gel and balsamic oil pearls, foie gras NRG foie gras parfait on strawberry cashew miso crumb topped with strawberry rose gel freeze dried strawberry gel and Malden salt and left is summer sausage with avonlea cheddar with raspberry mostarda. Really enjoyed the crisp brisee shell. Aebleskiver was tastefully done with crab inside and on top as well as the tarragon emulsion. 5) Spring bounty: Summer bounty...everything fresh from their garden, turnip, brassica, radish, summer gold tomato, English pea shoots, shiso leaf, herbs. Has cucumber and smoked zucchini. Beurre blanc sauce underneath 6) Smokey beef tallow emulsion, elderberry condiment, pickled spruce tip and wagyu on sourdough grissini. Had wished the grissini was a bit crisper and that the wagyu was a bit warmer. 7) Cornflake crusted Manitoba pickerel with summer legumes English peas and snap peas and fava beans, pickled elderflower and capers underneath. Elderflower butter sauce, had lemon juice with parsley oil. Nice crunch. Flavorful 8) Dry aged duck breast, roasted heirloom tomato with duck and rose jus, duck confit, wild mushroom broth, duck heart and duck gizzard on skewer, duck rillette and duck chips with stuffed morel mushroom I enjoyed the duck breast, duck chips and duck rillette. Had to drink the wild mushroom broth to swallow the heart and gizzard (I'm not a big offal eater) 9) Cornbread dish: Palm kernel halva, smokey stone fruit, Brunost cheese on the cornbread. Felt like the cheese overpowered the cornbread. 10) Boozey Freezie: has no alcohol. Made of elderberry cordial, white cranberry juice and verjus (young grape juice) 11) DIY sundae. Milk in house ice cream and milk crumble on bottom, pumpkin miso caramel, fresh blueberries, with alpine strawberries, in house flowering shortbread, in house made brandied cherries, praline puffed grains and seeds, house made Douglas fir marshmallow Really liked the pumpkin miso caramel however the pumpkin flavor is very light. Douglas fir marshmallow was a nice touch same with the milk crumble. Parting desserts: box with two truffles.. one has strawberry and elderflower with Valhrona chocolate and the other is rosehip and speculoos Sweet grass ice cream sandwich, lemon verbena wild rice krispy Strawberry and rhubarb pat du fruit and flaxseed with hempheart caramel. Thought the pat du fruit was a bit too sweet for me but my friend thoroughly enjoyed it. Glad to have tried this full tasting. Was creative.

The food was amazing and loved everything in our tasting menu. We don't get foie gras in SoCal so I always make it a point to order foie wherever it is available and the foie gras with squash dish did not disappoint. It was a great mixture of sweet, savory, and sour. Loved everything bite of it. Service was great and they were very accommodating to my wife and hurt injured leg. Also really enjoyed the lively vibe and decor inside the restaurant. Will definitely go back to this restaurant next time I'm in Vancouver!

I approach Michelin-starred restaurants with caution, because a lot of the things that Michelin raters seem to care about are things that I don't care about. Happily, Published on Main avoids all of these pitfalls, while still definitely deserving it star. There is no presumption here. The servers are not wearing uniforms, and their interaction with guests is friendly and informative. Yes, the plates are served in a fairly synchronized fashion for each course, but without an elaborate show or pretense. Wine and water service is attentive, and meal pacing is perfect. We had the tasting menu which, counting all the little bites, consisted of more than 20 courses. Every single item was stellar. Standouts included the pickerel, the forest elixir (a broth) and the very unique saltspring chevre cheese course. There were multiple desserts as well, but they avoided sugar overload and were consistently interesting. We had the premium wine pairing to accompany the meal, and seven of the eight wines were interesting and perfect matches without being the bizarre sorts of things sommeliers sometimes come up with. Each one was presented with an informative description of its provenance and why it was being served with a particular dish. This is certainly the best restaurant I have been to in Vancouver so far, and it is justly deserving of its praise.

    Shari L.

Very good, and you pay for it. My friend and I both had the tasting menu which was a fun experience. Some of the dishes were incredible; others were less memorable. I did the wine pairing but I'm not sure I would do it again; it didn't accentuate the food pairing enough for it to be worth the cost IMO. Service was top notch and the ambiance is sexy and intimate. It's a nice place and worth dressing up a bit. Overall, would return if I'm looking to celebrate, though wouldn't necessarily get the wine pairing again.

Amazing food and friendly staff Michelin star place but has a laid back n atmosphere. Everything was delicious there. I recommend the dumpling, sable fish and the carrot dish.

Had to pay a visit to my fav restaurant in the city considering it had been a year. They had a new menu this time as they were celebrating their 5 year anniversary. The thing I was most impressed with was there drinks menu! They had a "Butterfly Effect" drink menu on top of their others to celebrate their anniversary. The menu had stories behind each drink which were so fun to read (probably spent 30mins reading them) that we only ordered from there. Our top 2 favourites were: :: B, DEE's & MR F - rum, banane du bresil, green mango, mint, and jal jeera. Jal jeera was something I loved while growing up so I decided to try a boozy version of it and ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! The flavours went so well together. :: Lost in transaltion - soybean suntory, sake, koji, cherry blossom, pocari foam. Super fruity and floral drink For food, our favourites were: :: Chicken fried maitake - fried maitake with garlic scape ranch. It was so crispy and if you wouldn't take told me, I would have thought it was actually chicken. :: Brassicas - red harissa, zhoug, black pepper yogurt. I'm not really a fan of cauliflower, but this dish changed that for me. Dessert (my fav part): :: Chocolate - chocolate panna cotta with peanut butter semifreddo and banana sorbet. It was my fav last time and I would say the same even now. I couldn't get enough of it. :: Coffee - coffee mousse with caramelia, toffee discs and crumble. My sister considers this her favourite and it is incredible! :: Hay - hay custard with green apple and chamomile. They gave this dessert as a surprise which was so sweet! Really liked this one too

Solid food experience although portions are quite small relative to the price. I was glad that we ordered a la carte vs the tasting menu as it felt better value - was surprised they did not offer any type of bread or amuse bouche to start the meal. The place is quite family friendly and we saw various groups of families, parents and solo diners which they save seats for at the bar for walk-ins.

Thought widely considered one of Vancouver's best (if not Canada's best) restaurants, I was a bit disappointed. The food is flawlessly presented, but there was little to distinguish it from any other "good not great" restaurant. I loved my first bite - the foie gras nrg bar - but some of the dishes were just average, and at least one (a salad) was practically unpleasant because there was so little dressing it was like eating raw lettuce. Service was excellent, though, but my table felt a little ignored while other people ate the tasting menu and we went a la carte. Might have been an off day for them, but it was a disappointment to me.

They serve it together with the pasta for Rachel whose flavours were sublime and in its unique shape. The brioche goes well with the pasta sauce. - truffled eggs were really good - crab dip with spiced madeleines was so unique and really good. - hamachi crudo was sublime. Flavours so so good. - roasted scallop was one of the highlights. The crunchy top combined with roasted flavour and the sauce it comes in - just so so good. - crispy eggplant I liked. Especially served with tomato puree. - the seared trout was really tender and the veggies it comes with complement excellently - the ribeye was amazing - the beignets and that chocolate mousse were fine. Actually the mousse was so light and good - and I hate chocolate! The only things I thought were just ok were the croquettes and the trout rilette. Highly highly recommended for all occasions especially special ones.

The entrance is completely unmarked, with darkened windows and no signage; you literally have to decide whether to push or pull your way into the gloom, which fits the "thief" theme perfectly once you step inside. Inside, the space leans into a **chic** speakeasy ambience, only slightly undercut by 90s chillout tunes that are a touch loud but still on-brand for a laid-back late-night hideout. The food is where things really land. Frog legs arrive as the star curiosity and end up tasting strikingly familiar--so much so they echo the famed chicken wings from Anh and Chi in both comfort and flavour. The beef tartare is properly seasoned and genuinely delicious, rich but balanced enough that it never feels heavy. Ox tail is a unique inclusion on the menu and it follows through, offering deep, slow-cooked flavour that stands out even among the stronger dishes. Duck breast is cooked to a textbook pink, tender and juicy, an easy "order again" plate. Dessert keeps the momentum going. An oolong peach creation acts as the perfect finishing touch: fragrant, slightly floral, and just sweet enough to close the meal without tipping into cloying territory. Service and atmosphere reinforce the sense of a discreet drinking den--this is the place you duck into for a properly made drink and a series of small plates, not a high-traffic scene bar. With nothing to complain about--from food to vibe--The Good Thief feels like a well-executed concept: a hidden, unmarked bolthole where you slip in from the dark, linger over excellent plates, and slip back out just as quietly.
