I don't understand how you can rate Good Vibrations lower than 5 stars. There isn't really anyway this establishment could mess up, unless they went out of stock of everything and only had butt plugs to sell. Ah, the joys of Good Vibes. I was first a recipient of a Good Vibes product before I even went in the store. I was ridiculously impressed by the fact that the women at the store were able to help my boyfriend pick out a vibrator for me that I actually LIKED. Not only did they walk him through different kinds (porous v. non-porous), but they also helped him choose the one he thought I would like best. BINGO. The store itself is beautifully open and airy--there are no dark aisles down which creepers can cast sneaky glances as you peruse books, movies, or the impressive selection of vibrators & dildos. The layout definitely makes for a more welcoming atmosphere. The only complaint I guess I would have is that there aren't as many... alternative toys available for those of us who are interested in bondage, S&M, etc. There is definitely a good starter selection available, though, and I recognize that most specialized items come... well... from "specialists" and they're more difficult to come by at a somewhat mainstream adult shop. You do not have to feel awkward or embarrassed walking into Good Vibrations. It is a store that truly lives up to its name in every way. The store set up is upscale with the feel of a bookstore more than a sex shop. The staff is friendly, helpful, no-pressure, and very knowledgeable. They test everything they carry and only stock the highest quality products. Everything they carry is also woman friendly (unless it is a product exclusively for men) which, as a woman, is so refreshing, given how man-oriented most sex related stores are. It is a place that promotes sex education and exploration and acceptance of sex as a normal, healthy part of the human experience. Just walking in broadens my awareness and puts to rest any of the uncomfortable feelings that so many of us have around the topic of sex. I am aware that they have many "classes" and talks there, and though I've never been to one, when I read about them I am frequently struck by how glad I am that they exist. GOOD VIBES HAS GONE FROM PROGRESSIVE TO REGRESSIVE. Several days ago, I entered the Berkeley Good Vibes store and got a huge shock and came home and wrote a review about how obviously the store's philosophy and marketing has changed for the worse. I find Jackie S.'s response to my original review (below) in which she says that "We apologize if selling lingerie personally offends you but we have responded with requests from customers to carry it as a product selection" to be a formulaic trivialization of my concerns. Selling lingerie doesn't "personally" offend me. Selling ONLY women's porny heteronormative lingerie (not men's) and having it now take up the majority of floor space in the store is offensive in principle to all the women who helped to build your brand over the decades. And the excuse that "customers asked for it" just confirms my view that GV has sold out to the mass porn industry zeitgeist, when for years your strength was resisting that temptation. When you start pandering to the general public's ideas of sexuality (like that how women "look" is more important than how they "feel") you stop becoming the alternative sex shop that was why you built a loyal following in the first place. Good Vibes initially CREATED the alternative women-centered trends, and didn't FOLLOW mass media conditioning. You were PROACTIVE for sexual education, not REACTIVE for profit. You taught me to be the subject of my own sexuality and then turned the tables on me, marketing women as sexual objects, just like every other sex shop. And, even more disturbing...you believe that press kit talking points will prevent your clientele from noticing. That's what happens when co-ops go corporate. I also think it's a rather smarmy strategy to attempt to frame me as a outlier with a "personal preference." Clearly the entire feeling of the store has changed. Own it, don't deny it. I felt it the minute I walked in and so did my guests. After raving to them about GV, they looked at me like "THIS is what you think is women-centered?" I live less than a mile away from the Berkeley store and have been going there for over a decade and felt the difference instantly. Interesting how you've rebranded Victoria's Secret style sexual marketing as an "ambient boutique experience." That's code for "eroticized female bodies for the straight male gaze." And, incidentally, I know I'm not alone. When I mentioned my concerns about the gender normative pandering to the salesperson, they remarked twice that "we've heard that from a lot of people." And we still don't know who Barnaby Ltd is...who's running things? There's no information whatsoever to be found on them in a Google search. You may have a former staff member as the Vice President, but it's interesting that you don't list the President of the company on your website...hmm...why the lack of transparency? Are you following the all-too-common trend of male owned sex businesses fronted by women to appear women-centered? That was GVA-TWN's plan, from what I can surmise. Is Barnaby Ltd. a front company to counter the negative publicity of the GVA-TWN buyout? For example, why does the "Kink for Beginners" page on your website only feature females in the sub position? GV Sex Educator Carol Queen must know that the research on BDSM shows that men are subs in equal numbers to women. More pandering to the porny zeitgeist, perhaps? Or would you like to suggest I'm an "outlier" for wanting you to be brave enough to realistically portray how women AND men find submission arousing, as threatening as those images might be to the general culture's media programmed gender scripts for sex? Giving men the respect to portray their authentic eroticism and sexuality is only an outlier view if you're taking your cues from the porn industry. Some women are subs, some are doms. Some men are subs, some are doms. MOST women AND men are NEITHER. And perpetuating the idea that women are sexually submissive because they're women enables rape culture. Good Vibes, you may have done what you needed to do to survive, but at what cost? As a sex educator working to help young women and men around the country fight the mountain of harmful and incorrect sexual images and messages they are bombarded with each day, I counted Good Vibes as a priceless touchstone of sanity and this change has really let me down. It feels exactly as if Larry Flint just bought Ms. Magazine and the cover story is touting cosmetic genital surgery as the newest "liberation" for women because women are "asking for it." And anyone who points out the absurdity is condescendingly dismissed as having a "personal" issue. Pah-lease. Well, it was good while it lasted. No, actually it was EPIC and world changing. Thanks for that. I'll try to keep that torch lit in my work. Hopefully others will, too. read more

I was driving down San Pablo Avenue last Friday, and I saw my mom go into GV. Yeah. No. Yeah. Really. My mom. With her Tiffany earrings and her Hermes scarf. The staff here are VERY knowledgeable. Other than Condom Revolution in Costa Mesa, this is one of the few sex shops where the staff know what they're talking about! What I love about GV is it has really nice high end toys, things that are made of really great materials with perfect weight. They also have a pretty large selection, in addition to whatever you cant find in the actual store you can find on their website. Personally everything I have purchased from GV I have been exceptionally satisfied with, except for the occasional bad choice in lubes, which brings me to pointing out that GV has a very very decent selections of lubes. Also the staff is great, they are smart, knowledgeable about products, comfortable with their jobs and "NOT CREEPY". I cant tell you how many times I have been in a sex shop and decided to not buy anything because the staff person was creepy or weird, and when I say weird I mean weird!!!
