Why is it I always find the best things when I bring out- of-town friends to this secret shopper store in Presidio Heights? Armani strappy sandals, a Max Mara silk blouse, a Goyard bag, Loro Piana cashmere and fur-trimmed winter coat... Well, that coat I bought for myself, a $4,500 coat for $800, appeared never-worn. Cashmere sweaters I've bought by the armful, ditto a classic St. John jacket and wool gabardine skirt. Shoes are hit and miss, usually in small sizes 8 and under. I've gotten lucky with shoes maybe twice. It's a consignment store therefore it's a treasure hunt. You owe it to yourself to check out their wares. The men's store is across the street. Sacramento Street has a variety of new and consignment stores. Unfortunately, Goodbyes is not one of the friendliest--or most ethical--shops in the area. In addition to profiling customers who don't fit their "desired" clientele, much of the inventory consists of designer dupes or inspired pieces rather than authentic items. When I mentioned that a coat appeared to be a knockoff/designer-inspired, the cashier rudely insisted it wasn't. I happen to own the exact piece and have studied the stitching--it's pretty clear it's a dupe. Also, selling cubic zirconia costume jewelry at diamond-level prices is not ethical. Trust your gut and consider shopping at The RealReal instead--they at least make an effort to authenticate their merchandise. read more

Love this store. I love the other Goodbyes a block away that also sells both men's & women's clothes , shoes & accessories even more. Quality items, mostly designer. Because it is consignment, it is a matter of chance that you find things you like in your size at the price you are willing to pay. I visit every 1-2 months to check on new arrivals and turnover in stock and sales mark downs. The staff is professional and helpful. TL;DR - wonderfully curated vintage clothes at a price! The first time I came here, a girl in the changing room told me she was on a budget because she did most of her wedding season shopping at another store. She ended up walking out of the store with ~$900 worth of clothes. personal finance goals?!?!? I'm not usually a super patient shopper (usually get bored after about 15 minutes of combing through sale racks), but looking through the quality selection at Goodbyes helped me enjoy the act of shopping for clothes again. Given the higher price tags on most of the clothes and jewelry, I really appreciated that they had changing rooms and a 1-day hold system. I nearly impulse bought a blazer-skirt set, but was able to put that purchase on hold, and come back the next day to see if it would go well with another outfit. read more

They are great stuff but mostly overpriced. I did find lots of wonderful items at mark offs and frequently shopped there since their stuff is constantly very good and at great quality with excellent conditions. Issue is that they will look at you as if you are going to lift from them. I am not sure why someone will steal from second hand consignment clothes but apparently incidents happened and the staff are constantly on the lookout. Today, I rushed back from other shopping to barely arrived in time to get the items I had on hold, I put my other shopping bag on the side in between the display window and the counter, away from all of their merchandise, unless they think I can magically take stuff in front of them, otherwise I myself am away from my shopping bag. Then the clerk said to me in a very stern way, "I've got to check that bag in, the one on the floor." I was shock as the bag is already on the side between the display window and counter. I thought she was watching me the whole time anyway, that is why I asked if I can tried the pair of shoes by the cashier counter instead of going into the back to avoid suspicion. When I told them I wanted to check out the clothes across the street, I was reminded that they are closing early on a Sunday and I have 20 min. I did end up getting two items as I always have been in the past few weeks, but I must concur with the other comments about customer services. Granted that the other two Sales I worked with today have been extremely nice, one asking if I want to pick up my check-in bag and the other allowed me to take my Vince Camuto jacket across the street. I often spend a great deal of time looking and thinking about the items which could be to many retailers an act equivalent to seeking opportunities to commit the unthinkable. Just know that you may be watched very carefully unless you are a super regular there. They are not following you around physically but I can feel and sense their watchful eye at all times! read more

There's a moment, when you've already decided upon the $16 Michael Stars T-shirt, the $30 Bebe blouse, and the $28 Armani Exchange top but you still can't decide which to get: The $90 Catharine Malandrino dress or the $53 Nicole Miller shift. And suddenly you just say "what the hell" and go for broke because these clothes, while still not cheap, are so much cheaper than they'd be if bought brand new. This place has great consigned clothes and is a must stop every time I'm in the area. If I were searching for something particular, I'd likely even make a trip there for that reason alone. My quibbles are few, but they exist: * Only 4 items allowed in the dressing room at one time means that you have to keep re-dressing and dragging your purse and valuables out to the lady who's holding the rest of your clothes. How about some robes back there, to make things easier? Better yet, how about allowing us more than 4 items? * The store is small and chock-full of goods. Some up high, some down low, some at just the right height, the 3 Bears Syndrome. I understand that this maximizes use of the space but I find it difficult to look at the high racks or the low racks for very long due to the uncomfortable positions I need to contort myself into. * Not a quibble, just a fact: Their store on the even-numbered side of the street has men's clothes and some more women's clothes. I can't vouch for the men's, but the store on the odd-numbered side of the street is where you'll find the good stuff for la femme. Anyhow, clearly none of these quibbles have stopped me from having a grand time here. They're a lot more expensive than Crossroads Trading but the selection is generally more upscale, perfect for those who might find themselves here as opposed to Outer Valencia Street. read more

Do rich people buy used clothes? Maybe they do. This little consignment boutique in Laurel Heights has an A-sign with the tag line, "Dress like a million ... on someone else's million." All the clothes in the store have been sorted by size, which is very convenient. You'll probably still have to have a little tailoring done with what you buy, but there's nothing wrong with that. read more

On clothing, especially vintage, beware they will most likely need dry cleaning or washing before wearing them. I bought a St. John vintage dinner jacket and I got 3 bug bites on my upper arms. Not even sure if the small shiny glued beads will stay after cleaning. If you don't have time to clean worn clothes, at least put them in low heat dryer with a dryer sheet to and turn the outfit inside out. Then, hang for at least an hour to air out. read more

Like all used goods shopping, persistence is key here. But I can't help but notice that a lot of stuff here can be quite dowdy or on the wrong side of the 1980s/1990s nostalgia. I'm a regular goldilocks here: it's too small, too big (who knew designer wear comes in XXL?), or too ugly. But patient digging will produce some results on your lucky day. Abandon your expectations at the door and you're better for it. A warning for the saintly men who accompany their lady friends on their shopping sprees: this store won't let you anywhere near the back room where the fitting rooms are (at first glance, it looks like a shoes/handbags room). There's an overbearing bulldog of a woman guarding the doorway who will gruffly tell you, as if you're a perv, not to go back there if you get close to the entrance. This overly protective mother superior headmistress "Caged Heat" warden act was quite unwelcome when my non-perv shopping companion was chastised and told "it's a women's store!!!" and felt like he needed to step out. This was repeated a few times with other men who accompanied the women shoppers, too. On your way out, you can pick up complimentary cedar block "business cards" to keep your closet moth-free for when you need to consign your threads. They also have complimentary rubber squeeze coin purses that are a weird fleshy pink color, and look too grotesquely vaginal, proving to us perhaps that this indeed is a "women's store." read more

Asian woman with pageboy-style haircut is v. sweet & customer-service oriented. Her daughter (?) working this Saturday also seemed nice. I think it would be hard to ask everyone to give up their purses. We got to witness some little tart get all bitchy about it. *That* would not be cool to enforce. Ugh. I didn't mind really. You need both hands to sort through all the heavy St. John's Knits. Across the street are the clothes that haven't sold & are marked further down. It has a more of a Salvation Army smell- kinda musty, a bit more worn. The men's clothing is also on that side. Hmm, does he need a mustard colored suit? A leather vest? A million Tommy Bahama tops? I guess if I want to dress him like a total prick, yes. Leisurewear just ain't my thing, baby. To be fair, there were some nice swim trunks. Nice and BRIGHT... HERE I AM. ON THE BEACH. IN MY NEW SWIM TRUNKS. Won't make a special trip back here but it's not officially off my list. I've got a dental cleaning appointment in January 2007. I'm a regular shopper of Goodbyes Men Store and had never ventured into the Women's Store. I decided to check it out recently in hopes of finding some nice Ferragamo shoes for the old lady. To my dismay, when I tried to enter the shoe area, I was freakin' yelled at, "WOMEN ONLY!, WOMEN ONLY!" and told I wasn't allowed in that area. I was literally yelled at. Not a nice "excuse me, Sir", not a "I'm sorry you're not allowed to go back there," I was straight yelled at. People stopped to look at me to see what the commotion was...I I guess there's a dressing room back there so evidently men aren't allowed to buy anything in that room. I have to say that I have had nothing but success here. Where do you go to get the best buck for clothes that you no longer want. Granted you'll be disappointed if you are not dealing with high designer duds...I've mad some serious cash here, of course it gets re-invested back into my wardrobe. The older women who work in the women's shop are extremely unpleasant to deal with! When I called with a question, the woman on the phone was rude, impatient, and downright mean!! She was angry from the moment she said hello. All phone experiences have been very negative. Being in the shop is quite pleasant... unless you have to talk to one of the older women. The young assistants, on the other hand, were very polite. As are the people in the shop on the other side of the street. read more

There are two Goodbyes across the street from each other and they say that one is Womens and one is Mens. However, I learned today that the Mens one actually has a ton of womens stuff on sale! The stuff that is marked down gets moved there. I got a great Vivienne Tam skirt and Escada suit there. While shopping, I watched the staff accept/reject clothes from folks coming in. They were very picky and didn't accept any scuffed shoes, any stained clothing, anything that showed wear, and they even have certain brands they don't accept. They're basically for everything Banana Republic and up through designers. They have separate designer sections so you don't have to scrounge. read more

I found this store back in the late 90s when I moved to Laurel Heights from the Castro and at first LOVED it. I bought several RL Black label items and Armani pants for a STEAL. Back then the service was lovely and the atmosphere nice. Not so any more. I took in some items to sell (Vera Wang Gown, Ann Taylor Suits, Diane Von Furstenberg Dresses) and was turned away with attitude. Why? I am a size 6 and they had "too much of that already" and were very snotty about it. The thing is that they do NOT have enough in small sizes (2-8). I went in with a girlfriend who wears a 12 and she found TONS of great items but everything in my size was just honestly dated and either over priced or totally out of style or BORING. I asked about it too and was basically told what the other poster mentioned about the nation getting fatter and all of that. Well not in SF! The average woman here is probably an 8 - look around - this is a THIN city! It was a very negative experience. The past few times I have been in there I have not had the luck I used to. No more Black Label RL skirts for $40 - now it is 15K chanel tanks for 5K. HELLO if I could afford 5K for anything I would not be shopping at a consignment store! I could buy a GUCCI dress NEW for that so WHY would I be in a consignment store!?!? I think the staff and owners have totally lost touch with their customer base (I was one of thsoe people - used to shop there at least twice a week and easily dropped over 5-7K in a couple years at their stores on me and my husband). Consignors: You can do way, way WAY better than consigning at this store. They earn the "rudest clerks imaginable" title but more importantly you can get more at the mushrooming collection of online resale shops. This one is truly the worst out of the 8-9 that I've tried over the years. Best non-online shop in my opinion is Luxury Labels in Walnut Creek. Buyers: You can for sure find the occasional great deal here. I recently popped in on my way to another shop and it's gone way down hill. I didn't see a single interesting item. Their sales people are not the friendliest, but they're not as rude (to me, at any rate) as some reviewers contend. I've just read a number of bad reviews from people who have taken in items to be sold. I've not done that, so I cannot comment on how they handle this aspect of the business. An excellent consignment store! I do feel like I am treated like a shoplifter which is demoralizing -- especially when the staff can practically recite my VISA account #!!! I have bought mechandise that was not correctly labeled (e.g. Prada, Burberry, Dior) and then found out later it was faux (sigh). There is no refund even though the management states it is genuine. The old "buyer beware" mantra exists at Goodbyes, unfortunately. So, if you know from your gut that it's real, and it's well-made, then very likely it will be authentic. For those who love great second hand, you know that San Francisco is the city for it, Goodbyes is one of my favorites. Sometimes I don't find anything, however it makes the shopping experience even more fun when you do find good priced and brand new Channel purses, Armani sweaters, and Balenciaga tops. Definitely know that you have to be patient and sort through a lot of shit before you find the best things. But there is definitely opportunity for bargain here. So glad I dropped in that first fateful random day! And now, many random days! I'm surprised that there are so many comments about the rudeness of the employees here. Of the few times I've shopped everyone's been quite helpful, though they kinda watch you with eagle eyes, but they watch from afar. I've never bought second hand clothing until one of my friends who wears super fancy couture clothing told me she gets some of her stuff at consignment shops. Since coming here, I've snagged a few of pairs of shoes, which are some of my favorite shoes to date, made by Taryn Rose, Alaia, Tory Burch, and Christian Loubouin for probably 25-50% of the original price. They have a nice selection of purses and great selection of clothing, but I'll probably stick with just shoes and maybe some bags in the future since these are much easier to Lysol and disinfect prior to using :) Love this store! read more

Ok, so this place is a 10 minute walk from my apartment...on the way to my gym, which means I tend to stop by more often than I should... I LOVE Goodbyes!! Seriously! So far I have snagged a pair of 'paper, denim & cloth' jeans for $20; a black Barneys bag for $24; a Kate Spade purse for $27.... They have Manolo's for under $100...lots of designer items for cheap, cheap - a great selection of jeans, shirts, dresses... The only thing I wish they had more of is suits/professional gear....also I wish that the tops were better organized -- right now it is only by size. Granted there are so many of them that perhaps it would take too long to organize them more specifically. Seriously one of my favorite places for someone on a tight budget...or a less tight budget who want great deals... I've been a steady shopper at this Goodbyes for over a decade. My review is strictly for buying products, not selling. Today I needed to get out of the house, after being cooped up since March due to the Shelter In Place directives, I've been keeping mainly to my neighborhood and not venturing out much. Not today, I needed out and I needed a shopping fix! Enter Goodbyes and boy oh boy did they deliver. Pricing is very low at the moment as the merchandise is overflowing due to the lack of shoppers. Walked away with a Marc Jacobs couture dress for $50, a vintage YSL Rive Gauche short pea coat for $60 and two NWT Peserico dresses for $89 each. Can we say jackpot! The lovely sales people were helpful and since the store was empty (except for maybe two other shoppers), there was plenty of social distancing. Plus they have antibacterial hand sanitizer machines throughout the store for additional safety. Thank you ladies for helping this woman re-enter society on a high note. Now, hopefully, the world will return to normalcy soon. read more

Consignment stores are something I discovered in this recession, and I find them great fun. I kind of don't get the attraction to this one -- the clothes are cheaper than new, but not THAT much cheaper. I almost bought a pair of Cambio jeans for 57. Yeah, that's a third of what I'd pay new, but I'm used to spending $25-50 for clothes at Designer Consigner. Bigger selection here, but crowded and hectic environment. I must be missing something. Saw a nice bag by Jil Sander, but it was still over $500, from a retail marked price of $750. Relative to the grumpy attitude mentioned elsewhere, I did hear some customers, apparently regulars, talking to a woman who'd been working there for a week who'd apparently been recruited to turn around the attitude. But she'd have to turn around the prices for me to make a regular stop here like I do at Designer Consigner. read more

My boss introduced her staff to Good Byes in an effort to get us to look more professional, I think... while my co-worker took to the store in full force (she makes regular Thursday trips when the store is open later) it took me awhile to appreciate the balance that I find here. While most of what's on the racks isn't really wearable for someone younger (say, under 25) the items I did find were inexpensive, not terribly worn, and a step up from the Fillmore Crossroads. I got a bunch of Banana Republic tops, a Ben Sherman overshirt and a very pretty skirt (skirt selection here was pretty good.) Anyway, the balance -- while there's not a lot that I'd wear here stylistically, the things that I do like are sized more forgivingly. Maybe that's because folks who sell back here are older? I love this consignment store at 3483 Sacramento is a fashionista's hog heaven. just stumbled upon it while walking on Sacramento Street to do some Victorian sight seeing. I lucked out today because the were having a big sale of their shoes and clothing items. The prices are affordable (A lot of the Sales Items are really affordable for the designer quality and some of the sunglasses are $10.00 ea) I found a pair of barely worn "Paolo" black leather ankle-straps with a 2" flared heel. Wonderful shoes for $15.00 on sale. I love their shoe section. The cushy chairs and big mirrors make it really comfortable to try on shoes and use the dressing rooms. If you try on shoes bring your own nylon peds. They only have socks (it is hard to use them for dress shoes.) I was greeted by all the friendly sales-women in the store. We had great conversations and they were really helpful to me while shopping. The lady in the back who checked the dressing rooms was really helpful also. Wow, the rows of "affordable" high couture clothes was so temping. I over heard the sales ladies talking about a customer who just left the store whom had spent $24,000 on clothes there. Wow. They also have a smaller store across for men and woman's clothes but I liked the woman's selection at the larger store (women only). Only minus: Limited street parking during lunch time, but I went early and saw plenty of street parking. read more

TRIUMPH, said the little piggy '\(^(oo)^)/' regarding other posters' complaints about the staff - perhaps they've hired new employees recently? both the woman at the front desk and the one by the fitting area were very friendly and helpful! piggies are very fussy about customer service, but i didn't have a single complaint about the way i was treated, and they were quite friendly to the other customers as well, from what i saw (^(oo)^)v Update: went back to drop off 2 bags of stuff for consignment - handbags, shoes, sunglasses, clothes - they took everything and were really helpful! I used to love this place, and I came at least once every few weeks when I lived in the Richmond district. Alas, I think I have grown out of it. It's not that the selection is bad, but shopping here can be really uncomfortable. The lighting is dark, the racks are jammed with clothes, and there's no room to pass people as you shop along. I get into that irritated mode where I want to snap at other women who shove clothes along the hangers so they can see their item, inadvertently squishing MY section. The women guarding the dressing room area are like pitbulls. It's too bad, because there are good finds here. I prefer the sale shop across the street -- better lighting, but you have to bend down to look at the lower racks. Both these stores seriously need some usability research. read more
