What an amazing gem of a Vintage shop! This shop has everything you could want. The majority of their clothing is high end luxury brands that are gently used or new. I really appreciated that they had all different price points and there was something for everyone. I could tell they rotate their clothing and since it's January, they have many beautiful coats out to choose from (or just browse!). I loved all the high quality pieces, with many skirts, blouses pants shoes and the men's section is also stunning. There's something special about actually going to a physical store and seeing the fabrics and getting that tactile experience vs. online shopping. I chose three different leather jackets and a longer coat to try on and I ended up purchasing the coat. (That happened to be new with tags) The staff was very helpful and I liked that they let you shop but also were there if you had any questions. They were really lovely and I'm glad I got to check this special place out! I came on a Saturday, the parking was tricky (but of course it is, it's the city!) however they did explain before brunch hours it's pretty easy to find a spot along the street. Being an archival fashion connoisseur, I was looking forward to checking out this store especially being new to the city via New York. My friend was on the hunt for an ensemble for a special occasion and had envisioned a Jean Paul Gaultier suit or similar aesthetic/decade. Once buzzed in we made a beeline line to the suits, where we were immediately scolded and berated by the mature salesman's "can you not touch those, they are very expensive and I am very protective of them!" Now I myself am equally protective of of my rare archival Maison Martin Margiela, Jil Sander, Balenciaga, and Comme des Garcons pieces, so I initially understood his precautions. However, these items were not at all archival museum quality pieces. Their hand selected designer pieces were on overstuffed curated rack or shabbily hung high above the bordering walls. This rack we were looking through was not that and this behavior was simply because we were existing in his space. I have never been treated like this before, he never left our side during our visit. He was very helpful in directing and selecting items, as looking freely didn't seem to be an option for our brown hands. He did apologize for his initial treatment after seeing my friends current season Prada bag, as we were exiting. We left dumbfounded, confused, angry, and humiliated as we were the only QPOC shoppers held on a forcibly tight leash and eye. Moments later I described the incident with another QPOC friend and before I could even say the name, he answered, "Sui Generis!" He too wasn't surprised as he had a similar encounter. After doing some research prior to this lengthy review I was disheartened to see the owners share my Mexican roots. I debated writing this review but unfortunately the owners and future patrons need to be aware how their staff treat POC. read more

I am sharing my experience with the online pricing. If one goes to the website, there is a way to shop online. In the Women's Jackets section, there is a Bob Mackie Jacket that is priced at over three hundred dollars. Mind you, it is black (rarer) and it new with the tags. However, this is not that unusual that one cannot purchase it online on Ebay for far, far less. In fact, may I go further to day that this consignment shop has an Ebay store. The same Bob Mackie black jacket with the tag is being sold on their Ebay store for under two hundred dollars. So you are paying a premium for their website and less at their ebay store. You can probably search the items from the website on Ebay and see if they show up... maybe for less. You can find the store on Ebay if you search their abbreviations and the word "consignment" with no space in between. SG, I mean. So buy it quick and easy on the posh site or if saving is important to you, shop on Ebay. read more

Sui Generis is a gem in SF. Miguel and the team have an incredible inventory of beautiful designer pieces at all levels at great price points. The collection is much better-edited than most vintage stores, so it doesn't feel overwhelming. And Miguel has an amazing eye for helping you find the perfect pieces. My fiancé and I came in to look for a daytime suit for a party and some black tie stuff for a friend's wedding. We left with unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that fit perfectly and are unlike anything you'd find at a more conventional store. The pieces are high-end - from designers like Paul Smith, Alexander McQueen, and Ralph Lauren Purple Label. So it's not cheap, but significantly more attainable than buying anything from these designers new. Shopping here is a warm, fun, and creative experience. read more

They thought I was a thief because I wasn't dressed nicely enough. Rude store employees, gave me dirty looks while I was browsing. They are also more expensive than Goodbuys, and on other online places like Poshmark. The nasty employee told the other employee to put the gate down to prevent me from leaving the store cuz they thought I was stealing. Horrible experience. No, I was not wearing a mask and I was not stealing. It's actually better to consign at the real real cuz they pay up to 70% of the sale price. I shop at the real real as well as I consign there, and the prices for buyers at the real real are much better, this place is overpriced, and the styles are outdated. If you are looking for designer items at great prices, I would recommend going to the real real, also if you are looking to consign, the real real is the best place because they treat customers well, and they always pay if the item sells unlike this place, I heard some consignors are not paid on time or at all until they make a fuss about it. read more

Previously, I wrote a review about a negative experience with Sui Generis, about non-payment for good consigned. Thanks to that review, they paid up, right away, and responded with a classic excuse of having taken time off, confusion with mailing the payment, along with a lecture about negative reviews affecting small businesses. I get it, but someone there needs to be mindful of what they sell that doesn't automatically generate payments under $75. It was a hard won $64. - but still nice. It's too bad that they dropped the ball by not issuing payment earlier. So, thank you Yelp for lighting a fire under them. read more

Sellers, beware. Sui's business model is selling designer items at 1/3 of MSRP. Of that, Sui takes 60% and the seller gets 40%. So if you sell a $1,000 brand new suit, you're looking at $133. Not a great return in my opinion. Worse, they won't tell you the prices they'll sell you items at--not until you sign their selling contract which has a 5% fee to end sales early. When I asked if I could have them email me a proposed price list before they posted the items, they said no and instead repeated the refrain that "they've been doing this a long time". I question that policy, because the prices of their items are so high. For example, a gitman bros shirt sells there for $100-120. The identical models I could find online retain for $150. My math is rusty, but that doesn't seem to be 1/3 of MSRP. Worse, the buyer (I believe the store owner) was clearly in a rush and didn't give me the time of day. I explained I was a new seller and asked if they could explain their process and rules. He begrudgingly did so--while filling out paperwork--but made it quite clear he thought I was an idiot for asking such "dumb" question. To add injury to insult, he tossed around the items he wasn't interested in. At a minimum, I would like me and my clothing to be treated with respect. read more

Very nicely selected items from brands -- Costume National, Junya Watanabe, serious stuff! -- that should matter to the modern man. Even their shoes and sneakers, which I would rarely not think of buying second-hand, were in near mint condition. My friend Annabel was with me when I lasted stopped in and the only thing that made her sad was that they didn't carry women's lines. So, Upper end stuff, they basically sift through all the "fashion" and pick items, so you rely on their taste. I enjoy this more than going to a single designers store. I suggest you go in, browse and then ask one of them to help you. Their taste is very good and if they have nothing to fit your look or the look you are trying to achieve they will admit it and not try to sell you something else. Every time I come out of there I get compliments left and right from friends and the wife. One time she did not recognize me across the street. Shopping for "new" has become a waste of time for me. I always come back to Sui and get better stuff. The prices are not cheap, but the items don't smell like old consignment and they are choice items, which means even if it is a brand name unless it looks good they won't take it and display it. read more

This is the larger store located on market street and has top designer used clothing including Dolce and Gabbana, Gucci, Dior, Prada. They also have a nice collection of dress shoes and accessories all for men. I scored big again at this store and purchased a Dolce and Gabbana dress shirt w/ the tags on it for dirt chip. Most of the sizes they carry are 48 and up. I am currently eying a YSL suit for a fraction of what it would cost at the store...given it is slightly used it is in great shape and Bamb's birthday is around the corner (well actually it just passed but am the one buying so i can lie to myself). This is my new favorite store in the city! They have every high-end designer you could think of and the BEST vintage tees located in the back. Price points are totally reasonable and the condition is excellent. It's like they've found all the best garments and vintage pieces on Ebay, Buffalo Exchange, crossroads etc... and put them all in one store. The clothes and other products are created by the highest caliber of designers (Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Prada, etc.); only having been worn beforehand by person(s) resembling your body shape. The selection is vast. A clothes aficionado could spend hours in here looking at all the different hats, shoes, ties, shirts, pants, sunglasses, bags and luggage. The only things they're missing are socks and underwear ... and I'm okay with their decision not to carry any of these previously used items. The shoppability of the store is great. Colors are placed together, and are sized accordingly. There is a section for everything: suits, shoes, hats, handkerchiefs, pocket squares. The merchandising is great too. I go in every week and it feels like a totally different store. The price is fair. You know what you're getting when you purchase garments and accessories made this well made. As a collector of a particularly obscure men's designer who, in the 80's, had an entire section of Wilkes Bashford (the super-upscale SF specialty clothier) dedicated to his wares, imagine how thrilled I was when Miguel tells me that yes, he has a piece from this designer in the store. Moreover, he even snapped a few pics and text messaged them to me, sealing the deal. After literally hundreds of phone and email inquiries over the years to online as well as brick and mortar "vintage" and "consignment" stores (most of whom never heard of this legendary designer), Miguel is the real deal, and his store is among the very few in the nation to have helped this collector find a most prized vintage designer piece. This is a guy's clothing place, but I must rave about their wonderful service. The guy I followed into this store wanted to improve his wardrobe without losing the current shirt on his back, and Uncle Yelp came through yet again. The sales person was wonderful about scanning the store for everything in the proper size, and in the end, my guy was set. Had a great shopping experience here today looking for a suit (and settling for a blazer) for my fiance. The gentleman helping us, David, was very pleasant to work with. He was perfectly attentive without being pushy, offered us many great options which were both well-sized and suitable for my partner's body type, and was very understanding when we opted for a more affordable blazer instead of the all-too-perfect brand new $860 suit. Neither my partner nor I have ever shopped for a men's suit before, and David patiently explained the modern conventions for fit and length, etc. Prices are high but reasonable given the quality of the pieces, and a far better deal than the high-end department stores. We visited both Fillmore and Fifth and Cris today but found nowhere near the selection and help that was available at Sui Generis. Too bad my partner has less than zero interest in expanding his wardrobe -- otherwise I'd expect to be back here often! read more

Found the Prada air sole shoes that I always wanted to have. But they only have size 13 and I wear 9. But that's OK. That just means I will constantly come back again and again to check for more. They got lots of Dsquared items as well. I like that. But I would say they are overly priced as they are now on sale at Dsquared's own web site and at Nordstrom Rack as well. Not cheap but prices are dramatically reduced from their original price. I bought an amazing Alexander McQueen suit here. I didn't wind up putting my items on consignment but I wanted to leave a quick review on their customer service. The first time I called, the gentleman who answered was very helpful. The following week I brought in several items including a Louis Vuitton wrap and an Hermes tie. The day after I left the items at the shop, my sister let me know that her friend had wanted to buy the wrap from me. While they normal charge a service fee for items collected before the five month consignment period, because it was only a few days they waived the fee. As several of the items I dropped off were smaller ticket items, it didn't make sense for them to keep those if I was collecting the highest priced item. With all the craziness going on now due to the pandemic, I really appreciate the friendliness and willingness to accommodate my changes. Would definitely recommend them both for consignments and shopping. read more

The women's store has decent stuff - not quite the exciting pieces I was expecting (but then, I think there's a pretty limited stock of that in high-end San Francisco closets). The clerks were professional and pleasant. Given the condition of some of the dresses, though, I think they were marked a little high. If the zipper's going to need replacing, there's a hole at the seam and a snap is missing, it should not be $300 more than the same piece on sale in better condition at decadestwo. read more
