This Goodwill is located in the Laurel District in East Oakland. This location is known as the "Oakland - MacArthur" location. Other Oakland locations include North Oakland and Fruitvale. The Fruitvale location has a wholesale warehouse and offices, and does not accept donations. This location and North Oakland do accept donations. We came here to donate a trunkload of stuff -- mostly clothes, but also some children's toys (e.g., dolls, plushies). The employees were as nice as any we've come across at various Goodwill locations, mostly in the South. Something different about this Goodwill was we had to sort the donations into the different bins, by type, ourselves. At the locations we've gone to often in Atlanta, Georgia and Durham, North Carolina, we just place everything in a bag/pile either on a cart or in a bin, and the workers do the sorting. During our visit to this location, donation hours were 10am-2pm daily. There was plenty of free parking in a dedicated lot shared with an AutoZone. This Goodwill is one of 28 San Francisco Bay Goodwill locations (by my count). They go as far north as Vallejo and as far south as Menlo Park, with several locations on both sides of the Bay. For a Goodwill, they are fine. The whole store was just recently overhauled and it is a lot easier to find stuff in your size etc. I think the prizes are getting a bit out of hand. I used to pay $2.49 for kid's clothes. Now most of what I saw was $4.99. The stuff they have is hit and miss. I have definitely found some high quality clothing items here. But again, adult clothes have been hiked up in price as well. They make it easy for you to drop of your donation (10am to 2pm) and get your donation receipt. The neighborhood is all right. It's the Laurel and it has its problems. Sometimes there are sketchy types hanging around and you should definitely not leave anything valuable in your car. read more

This Goodwill location is solid. I usually come here to drop off donations, but during my last visit, I decided to check out the store. It was clean, and the clothing was mostly organized by size, which made browsing easier. The prices were reasonable, and overall, it was a good experience. read more

Donations are daily and 9am -9pm now (at this location at least). I went on Sunday 2pm and the large parking lot had just a few cars. It was a very easy donation drop off and the young gentleman also helped me unload an oversized box and large clothes bags from car to the sorting area just inside the big doors. I am both a donor and a shopper at this store. I always have a good experience at this store. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I have encountered items not priced out on the store shelves. It is the stores policy. I could not buy the item. Didn't make sense to me but it's a corporate policy and I respected it. The staff are employees obligated to follow the rules. read more

Ok babes, idk what happened since my last review. Covid, perhaps? The selection is SPARSE and the prices have doubled/tripled. I don't see how this is affordable for anyone considering it's a thrift store. It's no wonder why people give up on second hand and give into buying fast fashion. Jeans are $10, dresses are $12, tops are $6-7. Just a year ago I was buying vases for $2-$4 and they're $7-$14 now. It's not sustainable for people of my tax bracket. I definitely always try shopping secondhand first and I love recommending certain stores to friends and this one is definitely not it. I donate a lot here and the shopping is hit or miss as most thrift stores are. What made me finally made me do this review is the staff. I've had a few rude interactions with them over the past few years but I let it go. On a recent trip though, I just about had my last straw with them over some unmarked merchandise they had out on the shelves. Most Goodwills I've gone to just price them for you at the cashier but not only was the cashier unhelpful, she told me to talk to the manager which I did. And he said I can't sell it to you because it's not my job to price it. He made it sound like I just took some stuff from the bins and tried to pass it off as on the shelf. So rude. But also if you put out some unmarked merchandise out (mind you there were SIX of the same item out and NONE were priced) isn't that part of your job as a manager to price it for the customer???? There are so many other thrift stores in the area that have way nicer people - 10/10 recommend supporting the Goodwill in North Oakland where at least they'll treat you like a human being. read more

Beautiful! I regularly drop off donations to this Goodwill store. Today I noticed they had completely redone the whole store, top to bottom. I've came here several times to drop off big donations. The first two times, there was no wait and there were two large empty bins inside the store. The next few times, there were long lines and long wait times. One instance, the workers had everyone lined up outside in front of the bins. Each person go one by one, emptying out their donations to place them individually to the designated bins. Guess they've encountered people "donating" their junk and this was to ensure donations are still in good condition. Once all the bins are filled to the rim, that's all the donations for the day! They won't take anymore and you'd have to come back another day. read more

Visited this GW a couple weeks back coming home from work. I found lots of things for my liking but I passed. Then I got home and regretted it. Tried to go back but of course it was all gone. I found some vintage housewares since I collect and resell from time to time. It was easy to find an parking was easy. Second time I came back and no luck and walked out empty handed. The prices were decent but it's a smaller GW and the employee that was working was very nice and friendly. read more

FOR DONATIONS -- I had a great donation experience today at MacArthur Goodwill. The young guy manning the drop off was very helpful and welcoming. In about 2 mins time, I was able to drop off 4 large boxes and two bags of clothing (they ask you to unbox, unbag everything and take bags, boxes with you). For larger donations, MacArthur is the place to go, especially considering that Goodwill locations on San Pablo in Oakland and in Richmond, on University Ave in Berkeley, and the one in Concord all have a two-bag/box drop off limit. read more

it's way over priced. I finally find a cool wireless keyboard in the electronics section. I wait in line and the woman can't find a price tag so she asked, I presume a manager, who spot that it's a nice clean apple keyboard and she says "we don't sell apple products here " grabs it and takes it back behind the register and says sorry! I have been to this Goodwill countless times over the last 6 weeks to drop off items. The very first time I was greeted by Delvon who was helpful, friendly and working hard. I had the pleasure of seeing Delvon often who was continually welcoming. Over the course of my drop offs I was also assisted by Rashon and one of the managers, Dot. There were many other workers who were equally as efficient and welcoming. I highly recommend this goodwill store to anyone needing to drop off items. Two stars for being organized and simply accepting my donations. Finally got to Goodwill with the donations that I've been holding for months. There was a long line yesterday as people were asked to separate their own items. That makes sense! Goodwill is overwhelmed with donations and they just can't afford to take junk or personal items that are inappropriate for donation. So this morning I got there at 10:00 and stood outside with a few bags. The store opened at 10:10. The first person to come out yelled directly at me "ma'am you need to move your stuff right now." Wha? another guy in line and I looked at each other and try to laugh it off. They needed to set up so we waited. But then the yelling continued by a few additional staff who seemed really put out and like enjoying some sort of power. "You can't stand there." "You need to move the line starting in this direction." The vibe is really rude. I don't need abuse on a Sunday morning. It's been adding up over the years at this place but I put up with it because it's close. I am so done. And just a note about the pricing at this place.. someone once explained that shopping this Goodwill is actually not that cheap. I shopped around to check one day. I couldn't believe used old Navy t-shirts that I probably could buy new for $5 were going for $7. Salvation Army is super nice. The Goodwill on San Pablo in Emeryville is amazing. And out of the closet in Berkeley is awesome. I'll drive the extra few miles to avoid this place at all costs. read more

I'm not sure what's happening with the Goodwill location. I used to go quite frequently before Covid. The recent visits I've made to this location were disappointing to say the least. The store looks empty and void of merchandise. I was there again yesterday and it looks even emptier than 2 months ago. I asked the friendly employee if the store was closing but they said no. If you ask me it really appears to be closing soon as there's very little merchandise compared to visits in the past. read more

I've only visited the store once but it's small, clean and somewhat organized. Unfortunately the selection is small and all of the items seemed overpriced. $10 for a pair of pants and $7 shirts regardless of brand or style. I'm in the Process of streamlining my Wardrobe and my belongings . So I had Packed Up 5 big bags of Clothes and Jackets. A Few Garmin's GPS units and a Canon Digital Camera To Donate To Charity. I'm a firm believer in Recycling and Repurposing .I also like to give to Charity especially if it helps somebody out that really needs it. So I was quite Happy to find this nice Goodwill Service Center in the Lower Hills Area of Oakland . They really have a nice Selection of Clothes in there . They even have a Donation Center in there . In talked to the Donation Clerk and he rolled a large Cart out to my Whip and He Loaded my Donations into the Cart and even gave me a Receipt for Tax Purposes . Pretty Damn Cool. I Cleared some Stuff out , Recycled it , Gave To Charity, And they will Repurpose it and Sell it to help their Charity out . A Win Win Situation. Do Good ! I even found a Spiffy Pair of Shorts for 6 Bucks . I love a Bargain LOL. read more

Selection was sparse and wayyy overpriced. Came here to get some necessities like dishes, cups etc and it was more expensive than the average department store. I know it's goodwill and I don't expect an impeccable store but this location is particularly grimy. Also two young male employees were discussing how one of them should have hooked up with a certain girl and talking about it in a disgusting, objectifying way that I honestly don't even feel like repeating. Decent clothes and housewares, but what irks me to no end is that NOTHING is organized by size! What thrift store does this? It's quite a pain to have to look through every article of clothing to find the freaking size. Ooh, that looks nice! Oop, nope, it's an XS. Well that's pretty! Nope, it's a juniors size! I have visited this location a couple of times. First off, I wish Yelp did personnel vs store for ratings. The employees here get 5/5 stars from me. They are always working hard to get the products available to customers, checking in/assembling some larger furniture donations right in front of you, and I usually don't need assistance but everyone I overheard on Saturday was quick and friendly to help out others. The store doesn't have a big selection of books or older appliances compared to other locations, which is what I hone in on but they have to work with what they receive.
