I just got Blue Shield of California PPO dental health insurance, and Dr. Kanagaki's office looked promising from researching nearby dental offices. I made an appointment through phone, walked in on the day of my appointment, filled out some paperwork, got x-rays, examined by Dr. Kanagaki, and a thorough teeth cleaning. He and his staff were super nice, welcoming, and easy to talk to. I connected with Dr. Kanagaki since we both went to SJSU (Go Spartans!). I have had the blessing of being cared for by Dr. Kanagaki and his exceptionally competent and caring staff for the past 9 years when my previous general dentist no longer accepted my (limited coverage) Delta Dental Insurance sponsored by Kaiser Medicare. I visited nine dental practices, and did deep-dive online research on the dentists' training, qualifications, and patient testimonials. And made the very wise decision to "entrust my teeth and dental care" to Dr. Gordon Kanagaki. Old teeth require a ton of maintenance! I've been to their office at the corner of Santa Teresa Blvd. and Bernal Ave. too often! But have ALWAYS received most excellent care. The office is "basic," but always very clean and very efficiently run. Think I've had to wait for only one appointment which started a little late - because Dr. Kanagaki was dealing with another patient's emergency. And I'm glad he did! He's done it for me. I'm a retired RN, so ask a ton of questions. Dr. Kanagaki (and his excellent hygeniests) explain them patiently and thoroughly. He reviews and explains my dental xrays with/to me. Refers me to a specialist when I need it. For after-hour emergencies, the office answering machine gives you Dr. Kanagaki's cell phone number and he responds ASAP. I liked this dentistry because it's convenient for me. I live and work close by so I didn't need to go out of my way. I've been coming here for 7 years and now I'm wondering why I tried to be so loyal for so long. They're very pushy with their schedules. On the day before my appointment I would find them calling both my home and work numbers and leaving me messages to tell me to call them back to confirm that I'm coming in. On a few occasions after I've had my appointment, I would return home/work and find that I missed their message telling me that my appointment is in a few minutes and they hope I'm on my way. It gets rather annoying. On a recent visit the receptionist asked me for my cell number and any additional methods for contacting me.... ENOUGH ALREADY!!! How many times do you need to call me just to make sure I'm coming in? Maybe I should have a GPS locator set up so you can see that I'm on the way. Well, I was told that the dentist is very strict on the schedule and he gets upset on the receptionist if there are any gaps. There are 2 dental hygienists that work here. One is very good and friendly. I like her. The other one is rather tough on your mouth. I've often walked out with pains and headaches after a cleaning by the second hygienist. The dentist is always in a rush. It seems that he's rushing in, checks on you, does what he needs to, and then he's gone. I've also heard from my coworkers that they noticed the dentist often recommends procedures that are not necessary. Procedures that may cost a lot out of pocket. Gives us a feeling that he is more in this to find ways to make more money. read more

I love Dr.K. I have been seeing him since I was 4 years old. Ive watched his dentistry grow and his children as well. He is kind and warm and while it seems he may be in a rush I don't want him to be so thorough, he might find a cavity! Just kidding. His hygienist are always nice and very talkative. I had been to Dr. Kanagaki for 4-5 years for cleaning and exams. All was well until about 2 years ago when at my exam I suddenly had 2 caviites. He showed them to me on a micro camera. So, I went ahead and filled them. Thereafter, at my next cleaning the hygenist told me I had gingivitis and needed 3-4 cleanings per year. Interestingly, at my next cleaning, a different hygenist told me that my gums were perfectly fine. Red Flag #1. Then the fun begins....At exam, Dr. K told me I had 2 more cavities. No camera this time, I trusted him and filled them. At my next exam, I had ----wait for it -----2 more caviites. I should have gotten a second opinion but I didn't He replaced a huge filling in my molar which has put my tooth at high risk of breaking (meaning a crown- my first!! ) : ( He also left the tooth with the new filling - half the size it was orginally - which not only looked weird but caused gum irritation when I chewed. Sadly, I would bet this tooth did not need filling. At my next exam, I had - you guessed it! 2 more cavities!!! I finally got a second opinion and guess what?? NO CAVITIES! Needless to say - it is extremely disappointing that a medical professional would put his pocket book above patient care!!! NEVER AGAIN. BEWARE. read more

My family has been seeing Dr. K for over twenty years. We have always had great service from Dr. K and his staff. Never had ANY problems. We have recommended many friends and relatives, and coworkers to his office over the years and they have all been satisfied. He takes most insurances , so that makes it pretty accessible. As a person who is hesitant of any dentist or doctor's office I have to say I have been coming here for over 20 years and have not once felt concerned or nervous! The staff here is extremely friendly and I am always greeted with a smile. I enjoy the fact they call to confirm your appointment a day before, as I am quite forgetful. Being an elementary school teacher, I have an extremely busy schedule and they are always more than welcome to work with my schedule and help me book appointments that are convenient for me. I have recently moved to Morgan Hill and refuse to see a dentist closer to my home. The drive is always worth it! read more

We've been going to Dr. Kanagaki for over a year & a half....me, my spouse, and son. After over 20 yrs w/ the same dentist, I had to find one closer to home and under my new insurance. Also had to convince my spouse to get checked out after over 25 yrs of NOT going to any dentist. Anyway, found Dr. Kanagaki less than 1 mi. from home and glad we did! He & the staff are OUTSTANDING with my son especially, and my son loves going to the dentist (how many kids do that?!) My hubby had to have a lot of work done, and intense cleanings, and less than 2 yrs later he's back in good shape. I had lots of "catch up" and new work also, and now feel back on track. Then, this weekend, I had a crown pop off and was in extreme pain from the tooth under being exposed. Dr. Kanagaki came in on a Sunday morning and fixed it for me because he knew it hurt - didn't make me wait or make an appointment on Monday. That's service, and attention to the patient's needs!! I am very grateful for that level of service. Again, glad we chose wisely for this family dental service. We have not had any negative experiences, only positive ones for all three of us. read more

I have not been to Dr. Kanaki's office of quite a number of years. I stopped going because I wasn't sure I could trust his judgment. I had gone my whole life, over 30 years without ever having a cavity. Oddly, soon after going to Dr.Kanagaki, he found 4 cavities. I trusted him because he is a dentist and felt that he knew best. I had him fill those cavities. However I later became suspicious after I had him seal my wisdom teeth. a year later, he told me that there were cavities in them and he wanted to remove them. I went to another dentist for a second opinion. He told me that my wisdoms teeth were fine. That was over 10 years ago and I still have my wisdom teeth and have never had any problem with them. I must say I am very skeptical of ambitious dentists now. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Kanagaki for more than 30 yrs. I have never experienced any rudeness, yelling, nothing but professionalism from he and his staff. I wouldn't go to another dentist because I have so much confidence in his abilities. His staff is outstanding, friendly and very sweet. I guess it would depend on the patients attitude and find it difficult to believe that Doctor was rude or yelled at anyone. I have recommended him to my friends and they like him very much. He doesn't do filings, etc. unless they are needed. I am sorry that someone said they had a bad experience, wish I could give you some of my positive experiences. I had a tooth that needed a crown. I didn't have the money and 15 years ago Dr. Kanagaki built my tooth up with a filling and saved me lots of money. Since then, I have had no problems with that tooth and never had to get an expensive crown. Great dentst that does great work. the other review said he is in a rush and in and out..well I would rather have a dentist that does good work...not trying to make a friend, trying to get good dental work and I got it. thanks dr!! read more

He is great with children and my children LOVE to go to the dentist because of the experience they've has here. Our family, children and grandchildren, have had our dental care by Dr. Kanagaki for the past 37 years. When my son had a filling, he fell asleep in the chair, thanks to Dr. K's gentle touch. I am extremely pleased with my dentist, Dr. Kanagaki. I have been going to him for 20 + years. He is professional, thorough with his work, I am completely at ease with his care and the drill in my mouth. He explains what he is going to do, the injections you can barely feel the first pinch, he is that good. His assistant is very professional and cares about my comfort. The hygentist is sweet, funny and gentle, I enjoy talking with her. The receptionist Sasha is friendly and very sweet, love it when she calls to remind me of an app't or if I have to change an app't. She knows me by name and with so many clients that is amazing when I walk in the door. The insurance lady, Sharon is so together and if I have any questions about my coverage, she is right there explaining or checking to make sure I have the answers I require. The staff personal are pleasant, funny and always have smiles to welcome you to the office. I have recommended him to my neighbors/friends and they like him just as I do. If I wasn't pleased about anything I feel I can talk to him or his staff if something was bothering me while during my visit. I think Dr. Kanagaki is a super dentist and wouldn't change for any other dentist, why change when I already have the very best. read more

My children went to Dr Kanagaki for about 12+ yrs at first it seemed fine. Then I started questioning after my daughter kept asking why EVERY time we go in to have our teeth cleaned we have at least one cavity more often then not 4 or 5 cavities. Neither my husband or i have ever had a cavity why do our kids have so many and not just one but all of them. .As they became older and hated there treatment and how much work they always had to have done and how they did not like how they were treated. They choose to go to different dentists.They all saw different dentists throughout California at different times .The different dentists all had about the same thing to say. I have not seen someone at so young with so many fillings and crowns yes crowns before the age of 18. they all said the fillings in there mouth were made way to big so if ever there is another cavity they would have to go straight to a crown, One child has had to have an inplant do to poor work done on their crown that was so bad it could not be repaired. It was also said by all the new dentists that the blue light was not left on long enough to allow the filling to set properly. This causing filings to not last or to chip and break. It also appeared that there were many unnecessary filings done. My children also had all there teeth sealed and still had many cavities where they were sealed.I should have reacted more and sooner to the red flags. I now wonder why I stayed with Dr Kanagaki for so long. read more
