Why does this place have 4.5 stars!? Why!? On our way home from our super fun weekend in San Diego we stopped by Moonlight Park for our kids which was an amazing park and before we hopped back on I-5 we found this bakery on yelp since we were feeling croissants and donuts and decided to give it a try... Upon entering I noticed they didn't have any of the bakeries we were hoping for but I felt awkward to just leave since I was the only one in the store and I spotted scones so I thought we should just try some... I ordered one bacon and cheese scone and one poppyseed bunt cake and was looking for one more something but the problem is none of the labels explains what they are... The Tropic looks like a muffin but I have no idea what's in it! I asked the lady behind the showcase and she explained it to me but I wish she would be more helpful in explaining since I had told her it was my first time right after I entered the store and was taking quite bit of time trying to decide what to get... Anyways I got The Tropic since it sounded good... Everything came out to $9 and was a surprise since I had no idea how much each item was which is really annoying. Well the bacon and cheese scone was pretty good and the poppyseed bunt cake was a bit too tart for my taste but the tropic tasted just awful! I could not believe they sell that thing... It did not taste fresh at all and just gross! I hate wasting but after my husband and I had a bite each it went straight to a trash can... Will not be stopping by there again. read more

Just moved down the street and I go a least once or twice a week. Latte's are excellent and their scone is one of the best I've had. Like the Apple/Date plonk as well. Can't wait to try more of their selection. Everyone behind the counter is always friendly and helpful. read more

I heard about Gordy running (pun intended) a bakery from the good folks over at Movin' Shoes down the street and had to see it for myself. Yup, there it was and there he was. I picked up some cookies (PB, choc chip and snickerdoodles) for the family. They were huge and yummy! They weren't overly sweet, which was a nice change of pace. Yes indeed it is as good as it gets. I probably would have liked this place if the baked goods blew just because I super enjoy the vibe here. Sissy Spacek as Carrie on your to go menu? What else do you need. That says it all. The descriptions of the items for sale are equally fun. That said, the items are excellent. I have tried the sausage roll, (great), the plonk, (v. good), the captain crunch vs. of a rice crispy treat,(v. good), the scottish shortbread jam tart, (good but more jam less tart in my opinion), and the bomb.com- the lunch lady bar.(You must love the peanut butter, and I do.) I also like the fact that if none of this is doing it for you, you can order "nothing", which I have heard is superb right out of the oven. P.S. great iced coffee. I heart you Gordy's. read more

Great place with cool artwork and yummy treats. My favorite is the 'Lunch Lady' bar. Its a yummy peanut butter-oatmeal bar that is almost a candy. Definitely not a low calorie treat, but worth it for special occasions. Get one to share with a friend! read more

I stopped here because yelp said it was close by and it had great reviews. Apparently the girl behind the counter wasn't working the day everyone else reviewed it because she was incredibly rude! The guy who actually made my drink was somewhat nice, but the drink he made had no flavor whatsoever, like he had left out the mocha and espresso, and gave me watery milk. After sitting down and tasting it for a minute, I decided it might be better with more chocolate, so I politely asked the girl for chocolate. She said nothing and just slammed a little chocolate powder container on the counter and turned her back. Um ok thanks, I won't be back. The cookie was pretty good, but that's all we had. read more

This place is great. Right off Encinitas Blvd, near the 5. It is a bit hidden in the south end of a struggling strip mall, but well worth the effort to find. My wife and I tried it for the first time this morning. The staff was friendly and helpful, the coffee was great, and the baked goods ... Oh my. I had the Plonk muffin and my wife had the pumpkin. They were moist, dense, and full of flavor. The other treats in the case looked just as good. If I weren't limiting my carbs and sugar I would have taken many other cookies and bars home with me. This will become a regular stop for us as our church is right up the cul de sac. It should be a stop for everyone who enjoys great baked goods in a friendly informal shop. read more

Best muffins in San Diego area.. They are always fresh and moist. The coffee is excellent as well and the baristas are friendly. This establishment is quite the little gem! Wonderful coffee, and the best baked goods to be found on this earth! From what I understand, the owner, Gordy, was trained in Paris, France's Le Cordon Bleu School of Cuisine about 30 years ago. The vibe is very chic old school Encinitas. I was a little annoyed that the muffins only had silly names and no descriptions, but the lady behind the counter was happy to tell me what was I them. Not sure how happy I would be if it was busy. I was however very surprised at how delicious my Bang muffin was. Absolutely wonderful! Blueberry, walnut and banana. YUM! They even had a vegan muffin too. I was a little underwhelmed by Gordy's. The bakery options were minimal and basic. They had only about ten items, which included: chocolate chip cookies, rice krispie treats and some health bars. Oh my goodness! I can't believe a place this fantastic actually exists! I've been twice now; the first time I got the Plonk which is a muffin that keeps you super full forever! It honestly was the best muffin I've eaten in my life. The second time I went I got a meat pie and a hammerhead. The second visit met all my previous expectations and more! The crust of the meat pie was buttery, flaky and very melt in your mouth-y. The hammerhead was pretty good as well. Although I give this place a fantastic 5 star rating for their pastries and staff service, the building itself only gets 4 stars. It's not really a place you go to be cozy and study. Although there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Also the place is super, super clean. There is a nice selection of pastries, including a vegan sausage one, but not much in the way of actual food. This is more of a breakfast/snack place as opposed to somewhere to get a real meal. Lots and lots of parking. Bottom line, I didn't know pastries could be this good! Not only will I be a regular at this place, I will be telling everyone I can how phenomenal the food is. read more

Down the street from my office so I admit I am there a lot. Great Lattes, im not much of a pastry person but my husband likes the cookies I bring him from there. Only drawback, they dont do blended drinks nor do they have a green tea latte but everything they do have is very good. We love their bagged coffee especially the Papua new Guinee which they dont always have but grab some when they do, its good. read more

This place is great. The decor is wonderful. They offer the most delicious baked goods. My favorites are the lunch lady, shortbread, and the le bar (lemon). The B Bar is good but definitely on the sweet side! Definitely a step up from your usual coffee chain. We are lucky to have Gordy's! I wish they made sandwiches or salads. read more

I had been here before and the baked goods are absolutely amazing. I just don't recommend ordering coffee. The older lady with short blond hair messed up my order and made a hot mocha instead of an iced mocha. When I told her about it, she scolded me and made the cashier wring me up for an additional $.70 charge, when it was clearly her fault. She didn't apologize for her mistake and treated me rudely. I wouldn't order coffee again, but the R-bar was delicious. read more

I was one of the first customers at the new Gordy's and was truly impressed with the quality of the food. I have not tried anything at Gordy's that is not above average. The service is great and the prices are reasonable. You can buy any size coffee for a dollar and it's not your normal burnt plastic national coffee chain coffee. I never buy coffee out because it generally sucks but I figured for a buck you can't go wrong and it was some of the best coffee I ever had. They also have the foo foo coffee drinks but I haven't tried any. Check out the great review in the Coast News. Highly recommended - you can't go wrong! read more

Much better cappuccino this time with whole milk (guess that's important), still can use more expresso kick but I guess that's more of a personal preference (or the tamping can be harder, usually I don't like those on the grinder....).
