Rainbow Roll (all avocado, no fish!)
    Justin E.

Ordered a rainbow roll and 4 pieces of salmon sushi. The salmon was brown and clearly hot high quality/fresh. The rainbow roll came with half the rolls topped with avocado instead of fish, clearly a money saving gimmick and another sign of bad quality. I would not recommend this place for sushi. Giving 2 stars because the food was affordable, although the price was not low enough to justify the lack of quality.

Experience: Gorilla is located within the border Uptown and Ravenswood. Small businesses are within the surrounding areas. I believe a park is near by so when the weather permits, it's nice to walk around. As a party of 3, we were able to be seated and served right away! This was not my first visit, but probably my 100th (Yes, this place is that awesome). Parking: Paid Street parking is located in the front of the business. Free parking may be available on Wilson, but may be difficult to find depending on the day. Worth: I have been to Gorilla many times and for its price, it is definitely worth it. $2.95 rolls is already worth the visit! I got a Miami Roll, Godzilla Roll, Dinosaur Roll, and Dynamite Roll (Pictured Below). Staff is super friendly and professional and also...BYOB! Can't really beat that!

Sushi here is very affordable! How can anyone say no to sushi for $2.95! For that price, the sushi was pretty good, but I wouldn't have too high expectations, as the sushi is mediocre. I really like to try different kinds of sushi here because if I end up not liking them I don't feel too bad for not finishing them, versus paying $12 dollars for a roll and realizing that you don't like how a certain fish and sauce don't go well together! I would have to mention that the service is slow and got easily irritated when asking questions about their menu.

I believe Miami Roll in the background. Salmon Avocado Roll, Philly Roll, and Crunchy Spicy Salmon Roll.

Cheap sushi place to visit with decent sushi. You are presented with a simple menu with a picture for each individual selection or you know exactly what your order will look like. Basically you get 6 rolls for $2.95 or a smaller number of specialty rolls for the same price. The signature rolls there are at a much higher price. If you like sushi come here and try it. The service is okay. The place is small on the inside and a lot of orders are to go.

You get what you pay for. You can't find sushi this cheap anywhere else. Rice is not good, too mushy and the flavor is off. Sauce on top of the spicy tuna and crunchy spicy salmon rolls is good but overpowering. But honestly I think I prefer the sauce flavor overpowering the rice flavor. Rice to fish ratio is off. With all that being said, it was definitely worth the $3/roll I paid. Menu says 2 pieces bazooka jalapeño, but it's actually just 1 piece cut in half. Shumai was cold. (Even though I arrived a little earlier than pick up time stated.) Coconut shrimp were meh ok. I didn't have high expectations. Spicy miso was good, even though it didn't have any pieces of tofu in it. I appreciate that they cut a hole in the plastic containers for the warm fried food in an attempt to keep it from getting soggy. Nice thought, but none of them stayed crispy when I got them. None of the people making the food were properly wearing masks- all of their noses were exposed and one person's mouth was half exposed. Only the person that handed me my food was properly wearing their mask.

So this is how I received my food. Yes it may have been the driver driving roughly but everything looked like it had been tossed back and forth across a football field. I would like to note that I have both eaten here and ordered from here several other times and never had a problem. The food delivered was ice cold, damaged, and the rice tasted and had the texture of cold two day old Chinese left overs. Very unhappy.

I LOVE Gorilla Sushi's sushi! Recently, I actually feel bad eating sushi anywhere other than here. The price/quality/quantity ratio of the sushi here is unlike anywhere else. $3 rolls of sushi that have between 4 and 6 pieces. The rolls are small, but they are not extremely rice-heavy like you usually see in these discount sushi places. I personally feel it's pretty good, and I am somewhat of a sushi snob. The sushi here is the best deal around. While this is my favorite place to eat my favorite kind of food, I am going giving it 4 stars for a few issues in the restaurant. I used to order take out all the time, but since I moved away from the take out location I've started eating at the location. Delivery is pretty quick typically, and I prefer their takeout to going to their Clark location. Waiting for a table does not take very long, but sometimes it takes a long time to get your food. Around dinner time, you can watch the delivery guy take ten orders out the door before your food actually arrives. This is not usually a problem when you go for lunch or you go for an early dinner. Another slight issue is the mildewy ginger. The ginger sits out on the table all day long and the taste isn't bad, but it reeks of mildew. Finally, the atmosphere is kind of weird. I don't totally follow the artsy coffee shop that they're going for. It kind of reminds me of a freshman girl's dorm. The sushi is delicious and the price is unreal, but the actual dining experience isn't super. If you can, definitely go for delivery.

Cheaper than buying grocery store sushi and obviously a million times better. We always get so many rolls for such a small price. Our go to.

I almost decided to save Miru for our next visit, but I'm glad I made time for breakfast here on our departure day. Located inside the St. Regis Chicago, the restaurant offers beautiful views. The service was excellent--attentive, friendly, and professional. I ordered the Tokyo Breakfast. The salmon was perfectly cooked and paired beautifully with rice, a soft-poached egg, and salmon roe. The miso soup was slightly salty on its own, but it worked surprisingly well when enjoyed with the rice toward the end of the meal. Overall, a memorable breakfast experience. I'd love to return and try the lunch or dinner menu on my next trip to Chicago.

The sushi is phenomenal, as were our drinks... but the other entrees are disappointing. The karaage and duck yakisoba in particular in quality could be from any corner restaurant in Chicago. The service lends itself more casual, and I noticed they were consistently quite slow to clear our table. I don't think people come here for the food as much as the views. Overlooking Streeterville from this angle and vantage was truly jaw dropping and for this reason I still strongly recommend Miru.

My only critique is the pacing. Since the chef already had the fish sliced and prepped, I expected a smoother flow, but the meal took about an hour and a half for 14 pieces of sushi. It felt a bit slow, especially for a lunch service. That said, if you're looking for a reasonably priced omakase with quality fish, this is a solid choice.

Both were great. Our bartenders were lovely and very friendly. Found out this is a Malort tasting room and we were able to sample some different Malorts (the cocoa one was good!). Then we were taken back to our table for dinner. Our server was super friendly as well. Started with the miso soup and crispy tuna bites which were probably my favorite dishes. The taki yoki fritters weren't bad either. We saw people getting omakase, so we ordered a yummy looking piece they were receiving. It was just okay (chutoro truffle). The nigiri was also okay. The tuna piece was the only I really loved. The fish quality wasn't as high as I was expecting. The sushi was decent. A little too much truffle in the spicy blue fin tuna and a little too vegetable forward in the hamachi serrano. All in all, the atmosphere and amazing service pushed this up to a 4 for me.

The restaurant houses both an omakase counter and an izakaya, but in completely separate spaces. The omakase side is an intimate, beautifully designed counter with around 10 seats. We were the only guests that evening, so the whole experience felt wonderfully private -- just us, Chef Shoji, and the fish. Chef Shoji opens the meal by presenting the actual fish you'll be eating, all flown in twice a week from Japan or Spain. It immediately signals what kind of meal you're in for. The 20 courses were well-paced and the quality was consistent throughout. Nigiri and sashimi were pristine, but the hot dishes were equally impressive, which surprised me. Both sides of the menu showed real craft and attention to detail. Service was fantastic -- warm, attentive, and never stuffy. At $210 per person, it's a special occasion meal, but one that genuinely delivers on the price. As someone who eats a lot of omakase back home in LA, I wasn't sure what to expect.
