Years ago I was a Godzilla I mean Gorilla Sushi regular. This Clark Street one and also the Jeff Park one. COVID and life got in my way so it's been a minute since I've had my fix. Went back today for a quick lunch takeout - and I am a happy camper. It's the same quality I remember (which yes, let's all just acknowledge what takeout "sushi" means and doesn't mean!), same options, and even the price - while of course a bit higher like everything everywhere - is still extremely reasonable IMO. Oh wow! Decent sushi at a fabulous price! I ordered 4 rolls via delivery on the app tonight and everything was delicious...could have been a touch warmer but I think that's a matter of opinion. I got: The crunchy spicy salmon roll - the crunch was minimal just flakes of the tempura in the rice, could be a bit more crunchy. The spicy is the sauce on the top and depending on how much is on that slice of the roll, determines the level. If there's a decent amount it can get spicy! The mini Godzilla roll - so good! My favorite roll and sadly so since there was only 4 pieces and was fairly skinny compared to the other rolls. Would love to see this roll offered in a larger portion. The golden California - 10/10 a great update to a classic. Can't go wrong here. And lastly the shrimp tempura. Another classic but it definitely lacked "tempura" to me. I'll definitely be back! The rainbow roll came with half the rolls topped with avocado instead of fish, clearly a money saving gimmick and another sign of bad quality. I would not recommend this place for sushi. Meh. This is one of those "you get what you pay for" scenarios. I was craving sushi, so it scratched that itch, but nearly all 4 different rolls I ordered lacked flavor, starting with the rice. Good sushi rice uses a dash of vinegar and a pinch of sugar - this was so bland. Everything else felt like it needed salt to bring out any flavor. I used the outrageously sodium-packed soy sauce to do so, but then all you taste is soy sauce. There were other rolls I wanted to try, but now I wonder if I'm better off just spending a little more to get better quality. Or just making my own at home as I've done before which had far more flavor. Also, I've ridden or walked past this place for two or three years now, and because the rollup gate is always half down, you never know if they're open or not. I always just assumed they were closed because I never saw people in there. Apparently it's to-go only. Which is fine, but maybe have a BIG, neon "OPEN" sign or *something* for new customers who aren't already in the know. Consistent, fast, affordable, delicious, healthy! Staff are always sweet and easy to interact with. I don't mind at all that they're take out only - go elsewhere if you're dying to dine in! Experience: Gorilla is located within the border Uptown and Ravenswood. Small businesses are within the surrounding areas. I believe a park is near by so when the weather permits, it's nice to walk around. As a party of 3, we were able to be seated and served right away! This was not my first visit, but probably my 100th (Yes, this place is that awesome). Parking: Paid Street parking is located in the front of the business. Free parking may be available on Wilson, but may be difficult to find depending on the day. Worth: I have been to Gorilla many times and for its price, it is definitely worth it. $2.95 rolls is already worth the visit! The best part about this place is that it is CHEAP AS HELL. Like 2.95 per plate which is ridiculous. So you can just binge and not break the bank or take the kids and introduce them to this amazing yet slimy delicacy because it's so crazy cheap. They also have stuff like Miso and Mochi on the menu. Ok the bad: The quality and portion sizes are small. The rolls are tiny AND half rolls which make them even smaller. The quality of the fish itself is also pretty poor. You get what you pay for. You can't find sushi this cheap anywhere else. Rice is not good, too mushy and the flavor is off. Sauce on top of the spicy tuna and crunchy spicy salmon rolls is good but overpowering. But honestly I think I prefer the sauce flavor overpowering the rice flavor. Rice to fish ratio is off. With all that being said, it was definitely worth the $3/roll I paid. Menu says 2 pieces bazooka jalapeño, but it's actually just 1 piece cut in half. Shumai was cold. (Even though I arrived a little earlier than pick up time stated.) Coconut shrimp were meh ok. I didn't have high expectations. Spicy miso was good, even though it didn't have any pieces of tofu in it. I appreciate that they cut a hole in the plastic containers for the warm fried food in an attempt to keep it from getting soggy. Nice thought, but none of them stayed crispy when I got them. None of the people making the food were properly wearing masks- all of their noses were exposed and one person's mouth was half exposed. I LOVE Gorilla Sushi's sushi! Recently, I actually feel bad eating sushi anywhere other than here. The price/quality/quantity ratio of the sushi here is unlike anywhere else. $3 rolls of sushi that have between 4 and 6 pieces. The rolls are small, but they are not extremely rice-heavy like you usually see in these discount sushi places. I personally feel it's pretty good, and I am somewhat of a sushi snob. The sushi here is the best deal around. While this is my favorite place to eat my favorite kind of food, I am going giving it 4 stars for a few issues in the restaurant. I used to order take out all the time, but since I moved away from the take out location I've started eating at the location. Delivery is pretty quick typically, and I prefer their takeout to going to their Clark location. Waiting for a table does not take very long, but sometimes it takes a long time to get your food. Around dinner time, you can watch the delivery guy take ten orders out the door before your food actually arrives. This is not usually a problem when you go for lunch or you go for an early dinner. Another slight issue is the mildewy ginger. The ginger sits out on the table all day long and the taste isn't bad, but it reeks of mildew. Finally, the atmosphere is kind of weird. I don't totally follow the artsy coffee shop that they're going for. It kind of reminds me of a freshman girl's dorm. The sushi is delicious and the price is unreal, but the actual dining experience isn't super. If you can, definitely go for delivery. read more

I've ordered from gorilla sushi many times before but not from this location. Today, I ordered 8 rolls from Uber eats and what I got was just really sad. The fish to rice ratio was just pathetic. Rolls were tiny and deformed. My meal was so unsatisfying that I'm gonna need to order sushi from a different place to full fill my craving. Last night I picked up my order for the first time at Gorilla Sushi. It has to be one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever been too!! Super fresh super tasty and a great price! When picking up your order they allow three people at a time in the store I wish they would change that policy. They could call your mobile phone number to notify you it's ready while you're waiting outside of the store Then only one person would enter the store at a time. I know it's an extra step for them but it's all about keeping everybody safe and I would feel more comfortable ordering from there more frequently if that was the policy. read more

I usually love gorilla sushi but my carry out order was absolutely terrible. I have never had such terrible rice with my sushi. It's what quality I would expect to find at a gas station. The rice was starchy mush and tasted old, almost like a paste instead of individuals grains. I wish I lived closer bc I would have come in and returned it. What little we ate left us feeling nauseous. I tried calling twice but it was busy both times. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it should taste it. The other locations do a great job providing good sushi at a great price. I regret ordering at this one. The rice is just as important as the fish. I found my new convenient go-to sushi place! For 1, it is very conveniently located. That's a plus. The menu is totally simple and not at all overwhelming. Everything on the main page is $2.95 and that's for some specialty rolls and they come either 4 or 6 rolls to an order. I'm pretty blown away by that value. Is the sushi going to knock your socks off, no, but that's what I reserve the special fancy sushi places for. This is great for a quick fix. The service was a little slow, but I wasn't in a rush so I didn't mind. However, good to note for times when you are on a time crunch. Here's another huge bonus, it's BYOB! Cheap sushi and I don't have to pay for each of the 4 glasses of sparkling wine that I require to accompany this dining delight, YES PLEASE! Hooray for this find. The interior is decorated really lovely and it's comfortable, parking is easy. For two adults to have about six rolls, two orders of edamame, and a plate of pot stickers came out to $22 each with tip and we polished off a $10 bottle of prosecco to boot. I guess I should have read the yelp reviews before coming here because I almost walked out without giving it a chance. Let's just say don't come hungry or you will be hangry! Went for an early dinner around 6pm on a Thursday. There was already two tables occupied and with us, makes it three. Right after us were two more tables filled up. At this point, we knew they were going to be busy, so we got our order in right away before any of the others table had a chance. Menu offered some good stuff so we were pretty excited, but boy were we in for a treat! Started off with seaweed salad, which took like 20 minutes! Honestly this is pretty ridiculous. There is no cooking involved with a salad so it shouldn't have taken that long. The sushi and maki rolls eventually made their way to our table. By 8:30, we were FINALLY done with dinner. The $2.95 rolls is honestly not even worth wasting my time for again. The staff is nice and apologetic, but the food was mediocre and the pace of service is beyond unacceptable. I know they are just starting off, but at the rate this is going, it is not looking good. The turnover rate for tables is averaging 2 hours for such a small restaurant, how is that even profitable? Even for the service staff, they will just be faced with hangry customers on the daily. Maybe changing the business into a Lawrence Fish Market concept might be a better approach. read more

There's not much more sublime than getting sushi for $3 a roll...well except when that sushi is actually tasty. The appetizers are solid, although I find that the shumai is somewhat inconsistent, whereas the seaweed salad is always consistently tasty. The rolls: with the rolls being $3 they are slightly smaller rolls than you might get otherwise, but they're solidly tasty and there's a pretty solid selection. I'm a fan of the sweet potato roll. The inside of the restaurant is nicely decorated and very clean. If you're looking for sushi on a budget, this is a great spot. read more
