We came around 215 and were told the kitchen closed at 245 due to lunch service ending. The rotary was consistently stocked with lots of options. I had really high expectations coming to STR sushi taku rotary simply because I loved sushi taku (the non rotary location), and wanted to try this out. I thought it would be even more fun for my kids, and there was also an advantage of getting less full and trying more things since the rotary gave leas pieces at a time. Maybe because my expectations were too high, but I didn't feel like I enjoyed the food as much here as the non rotary location. I felt like I was waiting and waiting for the things I wanted on the rotary to come, and I also felt like a lot of things I really wanted were not on the rotary anyway. All hot foods were not on the rotary, though that makes sense because then it wouldn't come to you hot anymore. My kids did enjoy the rotary portion, and kept taking food off the conveyor belt, which in the end we had to eat before my kids eyes are bigger than their stomachs. We did get also the cheapest option for lunch, which did not come with dessert, which was a slight disappointment, but you do get what you pay for. I might be back here to give it one more shot. This was my first time visiting a rotary sushi restaurant. It has been a bucket-list item for me for a while and I finally made it out to STR Sushi Taku Rotary! I have been to the Sushi Taku restaurant on Division countless times. I went with friends and did all-you-can-eat. My favorite item we had was the salmon and yellowtail carpaccio which we ordered separately off of the menu. It was flavorful and tasted fresh. It can be a little hard to remember all of what I ate since our group was grabbing plates based on how it looked instead of just the name. The Philadelphia roll tasted great. There were 1-2 tempura rolls which were okay. The sauce used on the octopus balls was amazing! I wish I could put that sauce on everything! It was so savory with some umami flavor as well. The creme brulee was okay, I wouldn't try it again. I think it could have had more flavor and-/or sweetness. The mochi as always was great. The food here is genuinely delicious, and I'd happily recommend it on taste alone. The wait to be seated was about 30 minutes, which felt reasonable. That said, two things brought my experience down. First, the waitress was unfriendly. She acted like serving us was an inconvenience. Not ideal, but something I could have overlooked on its own. The bigger issue was my to-go order. I got the Tuna Poke and a Dragon Roll. The paper bag was stapled shut, so I had no way to check what was inside. I placed it in my shopping bag and headed home, only to notice halfway there that something was dripping out. I was confused, because I knew nothing I'd ordered was liquid. When I pulled the bag out, I realized the leak was coming from my takeout. They had included a miso soup, apparently as a complimentary gift, but no one mentioned it to me, and it wasn't listed on the receipt attached to the bag. Because it wasn't sealed or flagged, the soup spilled everywhere. It stained my favorite bag and soaked my sunglasses, AirPods, and other belongings. A free soup is a nice gesture, but it's not okay to hand a customer a stapled bag with liquid inside and give no warning. A simple heads-up would have prevented all of this. Fun culinary experience with the bullet train and the revolving sushi bar The food is quite good for the price!! They have hand rolls, regular rolls, sushi, and lots of appetizers. Some menu items can be grabbed off the conveyer belt, others need to be ordered on an iPad, and it's either delivered by a robot, or by a bullet train. So cute! Mochi was so good, though only one per person. Crab Rangoons were so crispy, and loved the salmon and white tuna carpaccios. Both are only 1 plate per person. All sushi was good!! The quality is honestly amazing, especially for AYCE! Staff come around often to clear plates and refill water. We came on Thursday around 7pm and had to wait around 15 minutes. The overwhelmingly positive reviews have given me high hopes that this place would be top-notch. Alas, the experience was thoroughly underwhelming and I do not feel any kind of pull to return. Let me attempt to break it down. Selection: the conveyor belt selection wasn't great. Other than a handful of items I grabbed, I found myself having to use the tablet to order everything else. To be fair, the tablet does offer a wider array, including ramen and hot items. However, I am not about to pay ~$40 for Crab Rangoons and Soup when I get better (at least, no worse) for less. When I pay this much, I am here for the sushi. Quality: I hate to say, this just wasn't there. Much of the fish was the pulverized-into-paté. There were some whole pieces at times, but the ground nonsense was the name of the game. If not, it was another cheap ingredient like tempura or pollock (imitation crab) sticks. I also tried their seared salmon nigiri... and while I've had some divine seared salmon, here, it did nothing but dry the top... the kind of thing where they should apologize to the fish and dinosaur (for gas to sear) that gave their lives for this travesty. The only memorable thing with some redeeming qualities was the carpaccios. The fish was whole pieces, high quality, and the sauce had good flavors also. Alas, they have three kinds, limited to one of each per person (3 total pp) There is also a matter of cleanliness: the water cup had a red stain that was either from sauce or lipstick. Worse still, it looked like it may be part of the glass design, even worse than that, a little dried food the dishwasher missed is one thing... lipstick is another. Yikes. Finally, the service, while the wait staff was fairly attentive, some food items ordered off the iPad took longer than expected to get to me. Even for something that's all you can eat, I want to and sure I get a fair value. As much as I wish I could turn on or off a microscopic black hole in my stomach, I can't. Items at STR are those that may leave me satiated, but unsatisfied. While their cooked items might be satisfying - at these prices I can get a better value elsewhere. Combine all this with cleanliness issues, and I do not see a return visit in my future. read more

The service is amazing as well, the attendants are friendly and instructive and from time to time there is a robot that comes around serve your food, it's entertaining to say the least. The food quality is really good and they have a variety of options regarding sashimi's with no limitations (e.g. some places give you sashimi contingent on number of rolls you order but not this place). Weirdest and worst rotary sushi experience I have ever had. My husband and I get sushi on the regular, so we are not new it to. We come in expect to take what we want off the rotary, only to find out that you need to do the all you can eat package to take anything. We decide to do that, but I double checked the fine print. You have to eat everything you take or be charged extra, even the rice. Hard stop for me. I am a diabetic. I can tolerate some rice, but not an insane amount. Other places I have been are happy to sub the rice out for cucumber. Not this place. Basically, because I physically could not eat that amount of rice, I would have to order a la cart. That is still problematic for me because I can't eat an entire roll's worth of rice. I got the "rules are rules" treatment. We ended up leaving because I did not want to have to do on the fly carb and financial calculation. If you are a diabetic, this place is not at all friendly. I gave 2 stars because the employees tried to at least be empathetic. However, I expect better being located in an affluent area like Lincoln Park. read more

Toddlers under 3 eat for free if the parents order AYCE. One complaint is that they don't have utensils for kids so my daughter has to eat with hands... They have an extensive menu ranging from sushi and, sashimi to ramen, poke, etc. My favorites are the cold fish appetizers (limit 2 for each kind per person). The quality of their nigiri is average. Not a fan of the seared items. For desserts, they have creme brulee, match cheese cake, mochi and ice cream. Our favorite was the ice cream - it has a refreshing mango and beach flavor. I liked the premium options that came delivered to the table. You can grab dishes from the rotary or place orders with the staff. The ordered food will come by either staff, robot, or a bullet train that traverses the room on top of the rotary track. It's nice, because you can place orders and grab food from the rotary while you're waiting. Sushi quality was good as always. Salmon is great. Tuna was only average. STR has the same good quality, but with more options as compared to their non rotary locations. i especially loved the carpaccio, seared nigiri, and the choice of four desserts! the best thing is that majority of the specialty rolls come out as 4 pieces which makes it easier to try different ones with just two people if you like maki. service was especially attentive and nice for a busy friday night which was great. some downsides would be that the restaurant can be get pretty loud with a full house and that this place is on the pricier end. A traditional rotary sushi restaurant, located in the heart of Lincoln Park on Webster. You sit in tables that border a constantly moving conveyor belt with small plates of sushi on it. To participate in that, you pay the all you can eat price, a bit steep but you can get your money's worth. It's a bit cheaper if you do a weekday lunch deal. Or, you can just buy some sushi rolls a la carte. I wasn't super hungry so that's just what I did, got the dragon roll and the sal-fornia roll, both good. Also, if you do the all you can eat deal, you can order separate apps/dishes not on the conveyor belt, and they're also included, so that's ultimately the best deal. Just be sure to come hungry and take full advantage. I'm no sushi expert, so I'm not sure how this ranks against other sushi, but I enjoyed it. read more
